Late at night in the palace, an urgent report arrived from the border—Dayue had been provoking repeatedly, but the treasury was empty, and they could not go to war. Duke Xue volunteered to lead troops, but Zhang Zhe opposed it, saying that if war was inevitable, Yan Mu was the best candidate. The Emperor didn’t make a decision immediately.

Xie Wei pondered—Duke Xue had his own motives in volunteering and also wished to use the opportunity to bring back the Yan family. Unexpectedly, Zhang Zhe had the same intention but acted quicker. Still, the Emperor agreed to neither—both the Xue and Yan families were like wild beasts in his eyes. Shen Zhiyi suddenly appeared at the Jiang residence, dressed as a man, frightening Madam Meng. But she was there to see Jiang Xuening.

Jiang Xuening also disguised herself and took the rare chance to show Shen Zhiyi a good time outside the palace. Afterward, Duke Xue scolded him harshly. Now, only Xue Shu could be sent for the political marriage. Xue Shu begged the Empress Dowager, but even she wouldn’t help—royalty had no familial bonds, and Xue Shu was just too stupid. Xue Shu knelt outside the palace gates until nightfall and finally chose to sacrifice herself for survival—she went to the Emperor, offering her allegiance, pledging loyalty, and submitting herself.
