Yan Tuo replied that physical pain was tolerable, but the crushing hopelessness was what truly consumed him, a feeling of being trapped just as his mother had been years ago. He then recounted a painful memory: his mother taking him and his sister, Xinxin, to the train station to flee their home. His father had instructed them to take the earliest train, but his mother chose a later one, hoping their father would join them.
While waiting, he and Xinxin wandered off after seeing ducklings, and in the chaos, his sister disappeared. He only learned the full truth years later when Mr. Changxi gave him his mother’s diary. He read that its profound sound could summon fiends from the underworld, symbolizing "Humans and fiends sharing paths, merging into South Mountain." At the same time, Lv Xian sat contemplating Lin Ling, repeatedly typing and deleting messages to her on his phone, unable to bring himself to send them. Yan Tuo slowly opened a gift from Nie Jiuluo: a box containing a heartwarming family photo and his favorite fruits. Later, he began exercising secretly, determined to recover.
