Thank You Doctor Episode 20 Recap
> Thank You Doctor Recap
Jiang Zhongjing's words deeply resonated with Bai Shu, dispelling his self-doubt and worries. He affirmed his commitment to tirelessly heal the sick and save lives, a sentiment that greatly pleased Jiang Zhongjing. Meanwhile, Jiang Shan officially returned to work at the hospital. Her colleague Lu Ping'an was delighted, and Lin Zhi warmly welcomed her back. Jiang Shan explained that Old Pan was now effectively caring for Jiang Xianyun, who had become engrossed in creating online teaching videos.
In the hospital, Hao Wen's husband, Li Jiang Chao, who had been in a vegetative state for eight years, was admitted after an accident. While changing his bedsheets with a care worker, Hao Wen became distracted and fell, causing Li Jiang Chao's spleen to rupture and bleed profusely. Hao Wen also sustained a head injury. Bai Shu immediately instructed a nurse to tend to Hao Wen's forehead while he examined Li Jiang Chao.
Diagnosing a ruptured spleen with significant blood loss, Bai Shu ordered an emergency splenectomy. Soon after, a man named Jian Guang rushed in, showing excessive concern for Hao Wen's injury, asking if she was seriously hurt and worried about scars on her forehead. Hao Wen assured him she was fine, admitting she was preoccupied with thoughts of "them" when she fell.
Observing their interaction, Tang Hua and Lin Zhi found their relationship suspicious, speculating they might be more than just friends. Bai Shu, overhearing their gossip, told them they had too much free time. Later, during his rounds, Chen Zhi was startled to see Li Jiang Chao briefly open his eyes. He excitedly reported this to Xu Yiran, which frightened Hao Wen.
However, when Xu Yiran examined the patient, Li Jiang Chao's eyes were closed, and he showed no response to external stimuli, much to Hao Wen's relief. Xu Yiran dismissed it as a mistake, suggesting any eye movement might have been involuntary. Chen Zhi, however, was adamant about what he saw and refused to give up, spending his free time by Li Jiang Chao's bedside.
When Chen Zhi saw Li Jiang Chao's toes move, he called Tang Hua and Lin Zhi, who also witnessed the movement. Prompted by this, Lu Ping'an ordered an EEG, which revealed normal brain waves, indicating a high probability of Li Jiang Chao regaining consciousness. Lu Ping'an conveyed this promising news to Hao Wen, urging her and her family to make a prompt decision about treatment. Hao Wen, however, appeared distraught rather than relieved, which sparked suspicion in Tang Hua.
Jian Guang rushed back, pressing Lu Ping'an for a specific percentage regarding Li Jiang Chao's chances of recovery. Jian Guang was stunned by the high probability of recovery. Bai Shu interjected with a sarcastic remark, suggesting the outcome depended on whether they even wanted the patient to wake up. Jian Guang then voiced concerns about potential side effects of treatment, asking if medication could damage Li Jiang Chao's brain and prevent him from waking up entirely.
Bai Shu again offered to help them find drugs that would achieve that, but Lu Ping'an quickly reassured them that the safest treatment protocols would be used, dismissing the possibility of such severe side effects. He again urged them to discuss and decide soon. Jian Guang and Hao Wen agreed to deliberate further. Xiao Yan later approached Jian Guang in her office, inquiring about his relationship with Hao Wen.
Jian Guang confessed he had loved Hao Wen for many years and had planned to propose to her the previous night, assuming Hao Wen's divorce would soon be finalized. He explained his intention to place Li Jiang Chao in a good long-term care facility after their marriage. However, he lamented that Hao Wen's strong sense of responsibility made it hard for her to let go of Li Jiang Chao emotionally.
Tang Hua, overhearing, scornfully criticized their plan to abandon the patient. Jian Guang, visibly upset, countered by detailing Hao Wen's suffering over the past eight years. He described Li Jiang Chao's history of heavy drinking, domestic violence, and how he had alienated all his family and friends. After the car accident that left him in a vegetative state, no one offered Hao Wen any help. Jian Guang highlighted the constant care a vegetative patient requires, including managing incontinence.
He explained that Hao Wen had quit her job to open a small fruit shop near home, balancing work with caregiving. Jian Guang challenged their right to judge Hao Wen, asserting they couldn't possibly understand her hardships. Hao Wen later confided in Jian Guang, expressing worry about what would happen if Li Jiang Chao truly woke up. Jian Guang tried to reassure her, saying he would face whatever came with her.
Back at home, Jiang Shan was pleasantly surprised to find Jiang Xianyun had cooked a feast, refusing Old Pan's help. Jiang Shan hadn't tasted her husband's cooking in years and heartily enjoyed the meal. After dinner, Jiang Xianyun produced divorce papers, which Jiang Shan vehemently opposed. Jiang Xianyun calmly explained that reflecting on their years together, he realized he had burdened her immensely and never considered her perspective. He yearned for her happiness, asserting that her joy was his own.
He spoke of her growth from a new nurse to a head nurse, learning to control her emotions in the face of suffering. However, at home, she was an ordinary person burdened by immense pressure, both at work and at home, far exceeding his physical pain. He felt he hadn't fulfilled his duties as a husband and couldn't bear to see her suffer with him any longer. Jiang Shan, deeply moved and heartbroken, broke down in tears.
Against all odds, Li Jiang Chao finally regained consciousness. Bai Shu rushed to his side. Xu Yiran then informed Hao Wen, who insisted on facing Li Jiang Chao alone despite Jian Guang's offer to accompany her, fearing her husband might be agitated. Upon seeing Li Jiang Chao struggling to speak, Hao Wen anticipated his usual apologies and promises to stop drinking and domestic violence.
She declared she no longer believed him, having heard it countless times, and noted that domestic violence is never a one-time occurrence. Hao Wen, feeling she had done her utmost, bowed deeply and apologized to Li Jiang Chao for the situation. She then accused Li Jiang Chao of falsely accusing her and Jian Guang of adultery before his coma, even though she barely knew Jian Guang then.
She added that if Jian Guang hadn't intervened that day, she might have been the one in the hospital bed. Hao Wen asserted she had paid her dues for the past eight years and walked away without looking back. On Xu Yiran's phone, Li Jiang Chao painstakingly typed "110", indicating he wanted to call the police. Hao Wen, distraught, broke down to Jian Guang, fearing their arrest. Xiao Yan, having overheard their conversation, learned the truth.
Jian Guang revealed he was a former neighbor who often heard Li Jiang Chao abuse Hao Wen due to work frustrations. He had intervened once, only for Li Jiang Chao, who was drunk and irrational, to accuse them of an affair and assault Jian Guang. Hao Wen, fearing for Jian Guang's life, instinctively grabbed a flower pot and hit Li Jiang Chao, thinking he would only faint. Instead, he fell into an eight-year coma.
During these years, Jian Guang tirelessly helped Hao Wen care for Li Jiang Chao, and their shared ordeal led them to develop feelings for each other. Jian Guang, knowing Hao Wen had received her divorce judgment that day, knelt and proposed, offering to take full responsibility for their actions and a future together once they had served their time. As Bai Shu arrived with the police, Xiao Yan attempted to intervene.
Hao Wen accepted Jian Guang's proposal, embracing him in tears. Jian Guang comforted her, promising that once they were free from prison, they would be free from Li Jiang Chao and finally live their own lives. On Xiao Guang's discharge day, Xiao Yan, despite being off, came to see him. Xiao Guang was upset because Bai Shu had promised to take him to an amusement park but had to break his word to attend to a severe burn patient.
Xiao Yan gently tried to console him, but Xiao Guang persistently begged her to take him to the amusement park. Unable to refuse, Xiao Yan relented. Xiao Guang was overjoyed, enthusiastically pointing out features of the park, and they both had a wonderful time. Later, after finishing his work, Bai Shu learned about the outing.
Concerned about Xiao Guang's thalassemia major and the risk of injury and excessive bleeding, he immediately called Xiao Yan, angrily ordering her to bring Xiao Guang back. Xiao Yan complied. Upon their return, Bai Shu severely reprimanded Xiao Yan, accusing her of endangering his son's life by taking a sick child out without his permission, likening it to an illegal act in other countries.
Xiao Yan, in turn, criticized Bai Shu for being overly controlling and for withholding information about Xiao Guang's illness from him. She argued that Xiao Guang, at eight years old, had a right to know his condition and experience a happy childhood, emphasizing that a life devoid of joy lacked meaning. The two parted ways after a heated argument.
At dinner, Xiao Guang explained to Bai Shu that he had begged Xiao Yan for a long time, and she had only agreed after considering consulting with him, but ultimately decided against it because she knew he disliked being disturbed during patient consultations. Hearing this, Bai Shu realized his misunderstanding and called Xiao Yan late that night to apologize for his harsh words, though he still reiterated his concerns about Xiao Guang's fragile health.
