Jiang Xuening was entering the palace for the first time, and Yan Lin was truly worried. He came to see her before the palace gates closed and even brought her some medicine. When Jiang Xuening refused again, Yan Lin repeatedly promised that he would no longer say inappropriate things. Yan Lin also mentioned that today Xie Wei had asked him a question about Jiang Xuening—about how she had disciplined the servants a couple of days ago.

Yan Lin took the blame upon himself, and Jiang Xuening was confident he would cover for her. When Yao Xi heard Zhou Baoying mention the Ministry of Justice, she began to cry uncontrollably. She had originally agreed to the marriage proposal to Zhang Zhe's family, but now that he had offended the Xingwu Guards, she wanted to call off the engagement—yet her father wouldn’t agree.

Yao Xi looked down on Zhang Zhe; her father was a high-ranking official, and Zhang Zhe was not a match for her. You Yue suggested she spread the rumor that Zhang Zhe was jinxed to his wife. Jiang Xuening, who overheard from outside, could no longer contain herself and pushed the door open, dragging You Yue away. Outside in the courtyard, Jiang Xuening dunked You Yue’s head into a water vat before letting her go, shocking everyone around.

Jiang Xuening recalled how well Zhang Zhe had treated her in their previous life. Back then, after she became empress, she had pleaded with Zhang Zhe for help, only for him to be framed and imprisoned. Zhou Yinzhi met with Xue Shu’s father. He had been getting close to Yan Lin lately but still couldn’t steal the official seals. Jiang Xuening asked You Fangyin to bring money to buy silk from Xu Wenying.

Nervous, You Fangyin did as she was told. The silk market was sluggish, and Xu Wenying couldn't sell his stock, but You Fangyin had great faith in Jiang Xuening. The approach with Su Shangyi was a dead end, so Jiang Xuening wisely avoided further trouble and performed exceptionally well that day. Xie Wei, however, unintentionally agreed with this view. Jiang Xuening’s classmates came to her for help with the exam questions, but knowing they were all unmotivated, she deliberately gave minor hints to make her own performance look worse. Yao Xi arranged a private meeting with Jiang Xuening to ask about her relationship with Zhang Zhe, having reacted strongly the previous night. Jiang Xuening stated that she simply admired Zhang Zhe’s uprightness and was not entangled with him.

Xue Shu, using her father’s connections, got the exam questions in advance—only to find they were exactly the same as Jiang Xuening had predicted. That afternoon, the written exam began. To prevent Jiang Xuening from cheating, Xie Wei had her window opened. After the exam, Xie Wei commented on the results on the spot and was stunned by Jiang Xuening’s answers, staring at her intensely.

After reviewing everyone’s papers, Jiang Xuening cheerfully prepared to leave the palace, only for Xie Wei to rank her as “Excellent. ” Dissatisfied, Jiang Xuening demanded that Xie Wei explain his assessments in detail, but no one wanted to be publicly criticized again. Instead, she was outmaneuvered. At this point, Xie Wei appeared entirely innocent of any treason, and Jiang Xuening realized everyone saw him as a good man. If she alone acted differently, it would only raise suspicion.

So she immediately returned to speak with Xie Wei. Four years ago, she had entered the palace and fed him her blood to save his life, witnessing his uncontrollable side and learning about his soul-separation illness. No matter what secrets he held, eliminating her would be too easy. Jiang Xuening had to take a risky gamble.

Jiang Xuening asked Xie Wei if he feared she might reveal the past and thus brought her into the palace to keep an eye on her. He naturally preferred to watch her closely. To Xie Wei, Jiang Xuening was not a threat, but his desire to trust her was. That was the true danger. He told her to behave for the next six months in the palace. Jiang Xuening realized that there was no more room to retreat.

When Xie Wei saw Yan Lin with Zhou Yinzhi, he grew very concerned. At home, Jiang Xuening was mocked by Lady Meng for snatching Jiang Xuehui’s chance and being doomed even if she became empress.
