Xie Wei handed over the Yan family seal, and the Emperor was quite pleased. He asked how Yan Lin should be punished. Xie Wei replied that Yan Lin had indeed defied the imperial decree and couldn’t be let off. If the Yan family truly had rebellious intentions, they would be a grave threat. Therefore, Xie Wei advised exiling the father and son to Huangzhou, a remote place. The Emperor gladly agreed.

Zhang Zhe, however, believed Xie Wei had ulterior motives and wanted to report this to the Emperor, but Gu Chunfang stopped him, saying this matter couldn’t be rushed. The Emperor decreed that Yao Xi be banished from the palace. Xue Shu took the opportunity to mock Jiang Xuening. Even though Jiang Xuening knew Xue Shu was behind it, she was fearless. Jiang Xuening helped Yao Xi discipline the servants, but Yao Xi was ungrateful and even cursed Yan Lin.

Jiang Xuening couldn’t take it anymore and advised her to reflect on how she had ended up like this. Yao Xi, unwilling to accept it, ran to question Xue Shu for harming her. Xue Shu also looked down on her. Yao Xi knew many things but didn’t understand what should or shouldn’t be said. She ground her teeth in frustration. Jiang Xuening wanted to leave the palace for a few days. Shen Zhiyi immediately arranged a rest break.

Jiang Xuening and Jiang Xuehui returned home, where Lady Meng praised Jiang Xuehui endlessly and mentioned all the recent marriage proposals. Jiang Xuehui said she didn’t want to marry yet. Lady Meng completely ignored Jiang Xuening, who didn’t mind and just walked silently. Zhang Zhe suddenly came to see Jiang Xuening. At the marquis’ residence the other day, he noticed Jiang Xuening and Xie Wei were quite close and that they had traveled to the capital together four years ago.

Jiang Xuening explained that it was because her father was on good terms with Xie Wei. Zhang Zhe told her that the exile of the Yan father and son was Xie Wei’s idea and advised her to stay away from him — it’s dangerous to conspire with a tiger. Xie Wei planned to act today. He had been in poor health lately. Lü Xian, hearing that the bamboo well had been successfully developed, was even more impressed by Jiang Xuening.

Jiang Xuening repeatedly sought confirmation that the Yan family had indeed been exiled, feeling more anxious than ever. She began to suspect that their exile in the previous life had also been orchestrated by Xie Wei. Her suspicions toward him grew rapidly. Jiang Xuening was determined to change the outcome — how could Xie Wei lie to her? On a snowy night, she stormed out to confront him. Meanwhile, Xie Wei invited Gong Yicheng for tea.

Years ago, Prince Pingnan had spared Xie Wei’s life and had been using that to threaten him ever since. Xie Wei’s reason for coming to the capital was to destroy the entire Xue family — that had never changed. But if Tongzhou rebelled, how many would die? Gong Yicheng’s arrogant words triggered Xie Wei’s illness. He swiftly drew his sword and killed him.

On that snowy night, Xie Wei completely lost his sanity — whatever others could do, he could too. Gong Yicheng was dead, and Jiang Xuening witnessed Xie Wei commit the murder. Xie Wei turned to see her horrified face. Drawing his sword, he approached step by step. Jiang Xuening backed away in fear, but he suddenly grabbed her by the throat. She begged him to let go. In the end, reason overcame madness, and Xie Wei pushed her away.

His illness flared, and he took a dangerously toxic medicine called Jinshisan. Yan Lin was still exiled. Xie Wei was still that merciless killer. Jiang Xuening had no choice but to seek help from Zhang Zhe — why had everything returned to square one? Hearing this, Zhang Zhe seemed moved and promised to try to rescue the Yan family. Xie Wei went to the Jiang residence, but Jiang Xuening wasn’t there, so he went to the prison.

Jiang Xuening visited You Fangyin, feeling guilty that she hadn’t changed anything, but You Fangyin was grateful for all Jiang Xuening had done. Xie Wei met Jiang Xuening. She questioned him about the Yan family. Xie Wei asked her to return to his residence with him. Jiang Xuening wasn’t interested in what had happened the previous night and wouldn’t tell anyone. Xie Wei told her that only through destruction could the Yan family be saved.

Jiang Xuening also guessed at the connection between Xie Wei and the Yan family. Xie Wei was relieved — even though she knew he was lying, she still chose to believe him. Xie Wei hoped that the next time it snowed, Jiang Xuening would stay away from him — he didn’t want to do anything he would regret. Jiang Xuening asked her father to sell what Yan Lin had given her and use it to provide for their journey. Her father readily agreed. Though he had concerns, he would still do what he could.
