Jiang Xuening plopped down beside Zhang Zhe, making him feel a bit uneasy; even the tips of his ears turned red. Their scene together was witnessed by Xue Shu and Yao Xi. Yao Xi scolded Jiang Xuening harshly and tearfully questioned Zhang Zhe about his broken engagement. Zhang Zhe defended Jiang Xuening, stating that he had never wanted to marry Yao Xi and was only engaged to her due to pressure from the Yao family.

He told Jiang Xuening to take the jade piece and leave with him. Jiang Xuening was surprised to hear that he had broken off the engagement with the Yao family. Zhang Zhe expressed his distaste for the petty affairs of the capital and said that whatever had happened with Yao Xi had nothing to do with Jiang Xuening—she shouldn’t concern herself with it. Jiang Xuening was lost in thought—this life, she was not the empress, just a good person.

Could she possibly be a match for him? Ren Weizhi had returned to Shu yesterday, claiming to dig wells in his hometown. Lü Xian was furious that he didn’t get the money back and could only send someone to Shu to keep an eye on him. Comparatively, Lü Xian was more eager to uncover the secret business dealings Jiang Xuening knew of, but You Fangyin refused to betray her no matter what.

Jiang Xuening, on her day off, returned to the palace and brought a shadow puppet gift for Shen Zhiyi, hoping Shen Zhiyi would let her leave the palace. Shen Zhiyi firmly disagreed and also refused to excuse Jiang Xuening from her music lessons, so Jiang Xuening suggested summoning Jiang Xuehui to the palace. Jiang Xuening gave the gifts bestowed by Shen Zhiyi to Zhou Baoying and others, much to the displeasure of Xue Shu and Yao Xi.

The Empress Dowager went to great lengths to matchmake Shen Jie and Xue Shu. Knowing he disliked the Empress Dowager’s meddling, Xue Shu responded with words of shared sentiment. From afar, Shen Jie’s eyes lit up upon seeing Jiang Xuehui enter the palace, while Xue Shu clenched her fists even tighter.

Jiang Xuening explained that she arranged for Jiang Xuehui to enter the palace because Xue Shu mistook Shen Jie’s beloved for her and used tactics meant for Jiang Xuehui on her instead. So, she brought Jiang Xuehui in to take her place. Jiang Xuehui didn’t get angry—she knew Jiang Xuening only had a sharp tongue. Yan Lin still had to send out invitations for his coming-of-age ceremony.

Though few would dare attend given the current climate, he insisted on sending them. His Majesty still ordered the Ministry of Rites to conduct the ceremony for Yan Lin and assigned the rebel case to Zhang Zhe. Xue Shu tried to target Jiang Xuehui during class, but didn’t expect Jiang Xuehui’s musical talent to be so outstanding—it stunned everyone present. Xie Wei specifically called on Jiang Xuening to learn more from her.

After class, Xie Wei took Jiang Xuening for a private lesson. Yao Xi then went to provoke Jiang Xuehui, who finally lost her temper and scolded her back. Jiang Xuening played the zither absentmindedly. Xie Wei offered her some pastries and tea. In the box were peach slice cakes, which he said were from the imperial kitchen.

Jiang Xuening didn’t actually like pastries but remembered the peach slice cakes Xie Wei gave her on the road to the capital in the past. Xie Wei talked about court affairs and hoped there would be no trouble at Yan Lin’s ceremony. Jiang Xuehui later found Xie Wei to complain about slapping back at Xue Shu. Xie Wei didn’t look pleased and subtly asked whether she’d eaten.

The box in his hand contained the peach slice cakes Jiang Xuening liked—not too sweet. Jiang Xuening also noticed that only Xie Wei called her “Second Miss Ning,” because “Ning” belonged solely to her. Yao Xi accidentally found Jiang Xuening’s sachet and overheard Xue Shu conspiring with the Empress Dowager to plant the sachet by the roadside.

When Xue Shu picked it up and sought to make trouble for Jiang Xuening, Zhou Baoying told her it was Yao Xi who found it. So, Xue Shu took the sachet to Jiang Xuening, claiming she hadn’t targeted her intentionally and even offered to help deal with Yao Xi. Jiang Xuening refused—she disliked using others and didn’t want to associate with Xue Shu.
