Salt merchant Ren Weizhi was evicted from an inn for owing money and ended up sleeping on the street. Everyone said he was a fraud, but only You Fangyin stood up for him and paid his debts. You Yue searched You Fangyin’s room and found a few hundred taels, thinking she had stolen from the family. Learning she had gone to an inn, she maliciously planned to punish her.

Ren Weizhi thanked You Fangyin, revealing that he had developed a method for reusing abandoned wells, called the bamboo well. You Fangyin, entrusted by Jiang Xuening, wanted to work with him. However, Jiang Xuening demanded 70% of future profits. Ren Weizhi was shocked—this was harsh. You Fangyin had the same reaction but understood that in desperate times, Jiang Xuening had to use extraordinary means. Since she took the risk, Ren Weizhi should compromise.

You Fangyin convinced Ren Weizhi but ran into You Yue on the way out. You Yue hit both You Fangyin and Ren Weizhi and dragged You Fangyin back home, accusing her of trying to elope. Jiang Xuening, hearing this, was very worried. Knowing You Yue’s troublemaking nature, she feared what You Fangyin might suffer.

Jiang Xuening decided to find a permanent solution and asked Tang’er to find the two-tael gold hairpin her father had gifted her two years ago—it would be used to save You Fangyin. Jiang Xuening seized the moment to escalate the matter, claiming the concubine-born daughter You Fangyin had hit the legitimate daughter You Yue and called for officials. You Yue didn’t want things to go public, but the Xingwu Guards arrived—led by Zhou Yinzhi. Jiang Xuening signaled You Fangyin to trust her, and both You Yue and You Fangyin were taken to jail. You Fangyin was taken to a different cell, where Jiang Xuening and Zhou Yinzhi awaited.

Jiang Xuening asked if You Fangyin would be willing to shed her identity as a concubine’s daughter and live here instead. You Fangyin eagerly agreed. Jiang Xuening told her to rest assured—she would handle the rest. Jiang Xuening warned Zhou Yinzhi not to release anyone if the Qingyuan Count’s family came to rescue her.

As expected, You’s father came with 13,000 taels to bribe Zhou Yinzhi, who agreed to release You Yue, knowing You’s father didn’t care whether You Fangyin lived or died. Xie Wei waited all day for Jiang Xuening but didn’t see her, so he sent people to investigate what she had been doing. Zhou Yinzhi kept 3,000 taels and sent 10,000 to Jiang Xuening, who split half with him and asked him to give the rest to You Fangyin.

The one Shen Jie had picked up clearly belonged to Jiang Xuehui. Jiang Xuehui roughly knew who had her lost handkerchief. She had always given in to Jiang Xuening, making Jiang Xuening feel guilty.
