The opponent instructed Yan Poyue to activate the sentry post lights, which could serve as a guide. Yan Poyue, sensing something was amiss, decided to test them, falsely claiming he needed permission from "Company Commander Zhang." The opponent immediately saw through the deception, realizing there was no such commander and that Yan Poyue was not from the regiment. The opponent then declared that their communication lines were severed, their escape routes blocked, and they wouldn't survive until dawn.

Yan Poyue and Xiao Yun Jie quickly identified the voice as that of the sniper, who then threatened to kill Squad Leader Gao, who lay injured in the courtyard, unless they allowed him to speak with the drug trafficker they held captive. Facing the threat of mortar attacks, Xiao Yun Jie reluctantly removed the gag from the trafficker's mouth. Yan Poyue immediately contacted Fan Jin via walkie-talkie, informing him that the sniper was talking directly to him.

Fan Jin instructed Yan Poyue to keep his walkie-talkie open so he could listen in on the conversation. He also told Yan Poyue to keep the sniper talking, hoping to provoke a shot and pinpoint his location. The sniper emphasized that the captive drug trafficker was far more valuable than any of their lives. He warned that a second, larger attack was imminent and that the soldiers would not be able to hold out.

He mockingly vowed that Squad Leader Gao would not leave the courtyard alive, offering Yan Poyue an ultimatum: release the trafficker for Gao's life. As the sniper began a countdown, Yan Poyue stalled for time, claiming he needed to request permission from his superiors. Fan Jin, seizing the moment, ordered Xiao Yun Jie to use smoke grenades as cover while Fan Jin himself fired to distract the sniper, creating an opportunity for Xiao Yun Jie to rescue Squad Leader Gao.

Yan Poyue continued to engage the sniper in conversation, maintaining the diversion. During the ensuing chaos, while Xiao Yun Jie successfully rescued the injured Squad Leader Gao, the captive drug trafficker managed to untie himself and attempted to escape the warehouse. Yan Poyue immediately engaged him in a fierce struggle. The sniper, witnessing the scene, seized the opportunity and shot the drug trafficker, killing him.

Yan Poyue, with a profound sense of helplessness, reported to Fan Jin that the captive was dead, realizing that the sniper's true objective had been to eliminate their own man. Following the incident, a meeting was held where Deputy Director Ding of the City Public Security Bureau revealed that the attackers were part of the Red Scorpion, a sophisticated drug trafficking organization that had re-emerged with advanced weaponry.

He requested the military's full support for a joint operation to apprehend the remaining traffickers. Meanwhile, Fan Jin was lauded as a combat hero by his comrades for his leadership during the attack. Yan Poyue, however, was deeply troubled by the captive's death. He asked Fan Jin what it felt like to kill, to which Fan Jin replied simply, "The recoil force."

Fan Jin expressed his hope that Yan Poyue would never have to use lethal skills, advising him to focus on mastering his current duties first. Separately, the sniper was identified as Xing Tian, the godson of Kun Sheng, the leader of the Red Scorpion. The captive killed by Xing Tian, Kun Meng, was Kun Sheng's biological son.

Xing Tian falsely claimed to Kun Sheng that Chinese soldiers had killed Kun Meng in front of him, and he was powerless to stop it. Kun Sheng, who had named Xing Tian after a protective deity, had deliberately given Xing Tian an unloaded gun, which Xing Tian was aware of, implicitly testing his intelligence and assessing his responsibility for Kun Meng's death.

Drawing from his own arduous past, Kun Sheng, who had found success after a desperate encounter he attributed to divine intervention, instructed Xing Tian to recruit and train more people to ensure their organization's survival at the border. Back at the military base, Yan Poyue was consumed by self-blame, constantly training to become "the strongest" soldier, convinced that his perceived weakness led to the captive's death. Fan Jin, observing his relentless but sometimes misguided efforts, confronted him.

He emphasized that true strength encompasses not just physical prowess but also intelligence and experience, and that the title of "the strongest" should be earned through others' recognition, not self-proclamation. The next day, at a commendation meeting, Squad Three received a collective Third-Class Merit. Fan Jin was awarded a Second-Class Merit, while Guo Kui, Yan Poyue, Xiao Yun Jie, and Lu Xiao Tian each received a Third-Class Merit.

The company then announced that an outstanding young soldier from the kitchen squad would be transferred to a combat platoon. To the surprise and disappointment of Yan Poyue, who many expected it to be, the transfer was awarded to Xiao Yun Jie. Fan Jin immediately challenged Li Xiang, the company commander, over the decision.

Li Xiang, however, maintained that Yan Poyue's carelessness had contributed to the captive's death and that he still had "thorns" that needed to be smoothed out through more training. Fan Jin argued that Yan Poyue’s exceptional combat performance should be recognized, but Li Xiang remained firm, hinting at Yan Poyue's desire to stand out and become "the strongest." Elsewhere, Xing Tian began implementing Kun Sheng's orders to recruit new members.

He used brutal methods to select those capable of fighting from a group of "old, weak, sick, and disabled" individuals. Only one "powder girl" survived; her companions were killed, and she attempted to kill Xing Tian but failed. Xing Tian then ordered her to be held in a "water prison," stating she could only come out once she had quit drugs. As Xiao Yun Jie began his new role, training with firearms daily, Yan Poyue watched, his own frustration growing.

Lu Xiao Tian proudly sent his Third-Class Merit badge home, but Yan Poyue refused to send his, feeling he hadn't achieved true honor. At the training ground, Yan Poyue proactively offered green bean soup to a hesitant Xiao Yun Jie, bridging the unspoken distance between them. Yan Poyue continued his intense solo training sessions nightly. After much contemplation, Fan Jin decided to teach him.

During a rigorous sparring session, Fan Jin easily defeated Yan Poyue, a top-ranked fighter in the recruit company, disarming him multiple times. Fan Jin taught him that pure aggression leads to swift defeat, emphasizing that true victory comes from strategic patience, feigned weakness, and tactical maneuvering. He urged Yan Poyue to shed his stubbornness and learn to smile more, as a sign of strategic humility. When Yan Poyue expressed eagerness to learn shooting, Fan Jin presented him with a slingshot.

Initially scornful, Yan Poyue was quickly impressed by Fan Jin's flawless demonstration, hitting all targets with perfect accuracy. Eager to learn, Yan Poyue took the slingshot, with Fan Jin reminding him of the preciousness of each steel ball and instructing Lu Xiao Tian to ensure none were lost. Separately, Xiao Yun Jie sought out Staff Officer Ai Qianxue to apologize for their previous reckless actions.

When she questioned why he alone was apologizing, he admitted he was there on behalf of Yan Poyue, hinting at Yan Poyue's recent struggles and need for support. Ai Qianxue, though busy, granted him ten minutes to explain.
