Miraculously, all three subsequently suffered misfortunes, making Sun Youde deeply grateful to Liu Wushuang and convinced of his method's efficacy. Sun Youde began meeting Liu Wushuang secretly, sometimes escaping through a wall or dog hole to enjoy time in the city. Their affection deepened significantly. However, Sun Xun arranged a marriage for Sun Youde with Li Moxie, the eldest son of the wealthy Li family.
When he discovered Sun Youde's secret outings, he confined her and insisted on the marriage, despite Sun Youde's steadfast refusal and Shen Shi's initial hesitation about the Li family's status. Meanwhile, Sun Yulou visited his sister Sun Youzhen, who comically dodged Princess Zhaohua, fearing the princess would endlessly discuss plays with her. Sun Youzhen gave Sun Yulou a collection of gifts for the family, including an admired enamel snuff bottle for him. The Emperor invited Sun Youzhen and Sun Yulou to a hunting trip. Sun Yulou's attempts to ingratiate himself by harshly scolding the maid Caijin and his later inappropriate advances towards Caijin during a wardrobe change revealed his true unpleasant and lecherous character, leaving Princess Zhaohua thoroughly disgusted and avoiding him.
