Silent Tides Episode 22 Recap
> Silent Tides Recaps
On Christmas Eve, Liang Yanming personally wrote a letter and instructed his messenger to deliver it immediately to Dr. Ke Lin’s clinic, emphasizing that it must be handed over personally. After the messenger departed, Liang tore off the government seals from his office, put on his "Wartime Government Bond Fundraising Committee" armband, and left Kiang Wu Elementary School with a sense of resolute sacrifice. At the same time, Colonel Sawa received word of Liang's movements.
Although the Japanese Consul intended to attend the midnight Mass at St. Dominic's Church to strengthen Japanese-Portuguese relations, Sawa remained focused on Liang. Qiao Yinwan, overhearing Sawa’s conversation with the collaborator Huang Gongjie, realized the grave danger Liang was in. She desperately tried to call He Xian’s home, but his father informed her that both He Xian and his wife, Guo Qiwen, were out.
At a small tavern, He Xian, Ma Wanqi, and Yang Chang were drinking heavily to drown their sorrows over the current crisis. Their stupor was interrupted when Guo Qiwen arrived. She addressed the three men with sharp, sobering honesty. She first spoke to Ma Wanqi, revealing that Luo Baixin had known about his tuberculosis for some time.
Baixin had secretly copied the names of his medications and consulted a hospital; she wasn't leaving for study because he pushed her away, but was determined to stay by his side and care for him until he recovered. Guo Qiwen told him that Baixin was far stronger than he imagined and would fight for their love to the end. Turning to Yang Chang, Guo Qiwen reminded him that Mary Jones’s courage surpassed his own a hundredfold.
Mary had built the service station from nothing and stood up to the Japanese even when she had nothing left. She told him that Mary would be ashamed to see him now; she wanted a man who could lead the service station and seek justice, not a coward hiding in a bottle. Finally, she spoke to her husband, He Xian.
She told him to stop feeling guilty about Qiao Yinwan, who had proven her bravery by staying calm even after witnessing her brother’s death. She reminded He Xian that although his family worried every time he risked his life, they never complained because they understood the weight of the responsibility he carried. Her words finally moved the three men to wake from their despair.
Just then, a messenger arrived with news that Liang Yanming was in trouble, and the three of them rushed out. Liang Yanming arrived at the church hall as the midnight Mass was beginning. He rang the copper bell hanging under the eaves, its tolling drawing a crowd in the silence of Christmas Eve. Sawa watched from his car as Liang took the stage. Liang introduced himself and unleashed the frustrations he had held back.
He condemned the Portuguese Macau government for sacrificing Chinese interests to save themselves, using "neutrality" as a fig leaf for their cowardly cooperation with the enemy. He questioned the morality of their petty self-interest and their tendency to bully only the weak.
He reminded the crowd that weakness never bought safety and that if they ignored the suffering of the Chinese people, who made up nearly the entire population of Macau, they would eventually become lambs on the chopping block when the enemy turned on them. Sawa, his face darkening with rage, ordered Yamaguchi to take a sniper rifle to a nearby rooftop. Despite attempts by Fukue to dissuade him, Sawa was determined to act.
Yamaguchi took his position, and the crosshairs of his scope settled on the figure on the stage. He Xian and his friends arrived just as Liang was finishing his call for a "Great Wall of Iron" of resistance. A single gunshot shattered the night air. Liang staggered and collapsed into a pool of blood. At the funeral, the children of Kiang Wu Elementary School recited "A Song of Righteousness" in a somber tribute.
Ke Lin wept as he looked at Liang’s peaceful face and read the final letter Liang had left him. In it, Liang expressed his regret for past partisan divisions and entrusted the future of the Macau resistance to Ke Lin. In the days that followed, Liang’s sacrifice served to unite the community further. Local banks began underwriting wartime bonds again, and Huang Sanhe returned to Macau, pledging the full support of the Dahao Brotherhood.
Baixin moved into the guest room at Ma Wanqi's home to supervise his treatment personally. Seeing her resolve, Ma Wanqi no longer pushed her away and instead asked her to stay with him for the rest of his life. Meanwhile, Yang Chang finally regained his spirit and decoded the secret letter Mary had left him.
In it, Mary Jones praised his abilities and recommended him to take over as Station Master, expressing her full confidence that he would contribute greatly to the Allied intelligence work. He Xian later facilitated a meeting between Huang Sanhe and Rodrigues. To make amends for the previous hijacking of the merchant ships, Huang Sanhe had used motor launches to sell off a backlog of Rodrigues’s goods at a fair price in the rear areas.
Touched by the gesture and the effectiveness of the underground supply line, Rodrigues apologized for his own past actions and the two reconciled. Rodrigues subsequently refused to cooperate with Wang Qizheng and the pro-Japanese forces. Pan Hannian traveled to Macau for a secret meeting with Ke Lin at the clinic, bringing instructions from the central leadership.
He commended Ke Lin for his work during the bond incident and reported that the supplies purchased by Macau merchants had successfully reached the North China base. He instructed Ke Lin to continue bringing patriotic businessmen like Ma Wanqi and He Xian closer to the Party and to ensure the underground supply line remained operational. Pan Hannian also introduced a special operative, Ke Zhengping—Ke Lin’s own brother—who would be stationed in Macau to assist.
While they would work on separate lines, Ke Zhengping was ordered to accept the leadership of "Buddha's Hand" in urgent situations. Pan Hannian revealed that Ke Lin was "Buddha's Hand" and provided a secret code for special orders: "The Great Way prevails; all under heaven belong to the people."
