Silent Tides Episode 16 Recap
> Silent Tides Recaps
Qiao Renyu was subjected to brutal torture at the Japanese Gendarmerie Headquarters in Hong Kong, yet he remained silent, refusing to reveal how the banknote serial numbers were leaked or who had organized the Chinese merchants in Macau. Sawa Rongzuo reported to General Yazaki Kanju that He Xian was likely the primary contact in Macau, though Yazaki initially dismissed He Xian as a minor merchant.
Yazaki emphasized that the war was ultimately a competition of financial power and resources, ordering Sawa to find a way to seize control of Macau’s trade and financial lifelines. In Macau, He Xian’s reputation reached a new peak after the successful stabilization of the currency. During a board meeting at Banco Nacional Ultramarino, Rodrigues announced that He Xian had been appointed as the bank’s first Chinese Business Manager.
While He Xian’s career flourished, the British service station managed by Mary was struggling with a lack of funding. To keep the team focused, Yang Chang directed them to monitor a merchant from Zhongshan named Mr. Zhang, who dealt in hog bristles. Yang explained that these bristles were a critical strategic resource required for making brushes to apply anti-rust paint to warships and aircraft, which was why the Japanese were so desperate to secure them.
He Hongshen sought advice from He Xian regarding a promotion offer. Because of his performance during the currency crisis, Saito wanted to make him the shipping manager at Lyun Coeng. However, his fiancée was firmly against it, fearing for his safety during cargo escorts and his reputation for working so closely with the Japanese. He Hongshen confessed he could no longer ignore the nature of the business he was supporting, leaving him deeply conflicted.
Meanwhile, Qiao Yinwan remained in a state of deep depression, shutting herself away and refusing to see even Lok Pak, who blamed He Xian for her distress. Seeing her husband’s concern, Guo Qiwen visited Yinwan to offer comfort. While Yinwan admitted she understood that He Xian had acted for the greater good of the Resistance, the weight of her brother’s sacrifice was a barrier she could not yet overcome. The arrival of Huang Zixia brought significant updates to Mary’s station.
He reported that the traitorous merchant Zhang had been eliminated by Commander Ou Xin’s unit and delivered a specialized cipher book. Following Colonel Lyons’ report on his rescue, Allied Force Headquarters officially recognized Mary’s station as the designated intelligence post for the Macau front. Overwhelmed with emotion, Mary began teaching Yang Chang Morse code using a manual she had written, and the two found a rare moment of connection.
The economic situation in Macau soon deteriorated when the Japanese declared the Hong Kong dollar invalid in all controlled areas, threatening execution for anyone caught using it. This move was designed to force Macau to adopt Japanese military currency, effectively strangling its trade. When Ke Lin suggested that the local government issue its own currency, He Xian pointed out that they lacked the necessary printing paper. Yang Chang then recalled seeing trucks of suspicious paper at the Hong Kong docks.
Consulting Yinwan, they realized that her brother’s "second bomb" hidden at HSBC was likely a massive stock of special De La Rue paper used for Customs Gold Units. These materials were vital, as the Japanese could use them to destroy China’s international payment system. Ke Zhengping eventually sent word from Hong Kong that both Qiao Renyu and William had been located. Renyu was being held on death row at Stanley Prison, while William was in the adjacent prisoner-of-war camp.
Mary and Yang Chang traveled to Hong Kong to attempt a recovery mission. Disguised as a nurse, Mary infiltrated a medical facility where a guard had arranged for William to be brought. When they met, William revealed that he had panicked and fled during the Japanese bombing, abandoning both Renyu and the strategic paper.
Mary tried to convince him to help rescue Qiao Renyu by smuggling him medicine that would cause a temporary illness, forcing the Japanese to bring him to the clinic. However, William, now a fearful man serving as a foreman for the Japanese, reacted with cowardice and refused to risk his life, leaving Mary frustrated and desperate.
