Having led a patrol, Gui Bai reported to Ning Yuxuan that some individuals at the inn seemed suspicious, confirming that all preparations were in place. Ning Yuxuan then informed his companion that she would be sleeping in the woodshed with him. He explained that due to his many enemies, assassins would likely target the premium room. She accused him of using her as bait, but he insisted it was for her safety, assuring her that Muxu would be looked after.

Despite her reluctance, she moved to the woodshed, where she dozed off while sitting on the bed. Ning Yuxuan watched her, recalling the plum blossom-shaped birthmark he knew was on Nie Sangyu's shoulder and wondering if this woman, identical in appearance, also had it. Meanwhile, assassins broke into the empty premium room, only to be ambushed by Gui Bai. Awakened by the commotion, Ning Yuxuan calmed his companion, telling her to stay put and promising to protect her.

He joined Gui Bai to fight the assassins inside the inn. After neutralizing the threat, Ning Yuxuan left two men to guard her and took the rest outside with bows and arrows to surprise the remaining attackers. Worried, his companion disobeyed his orders and went outside, where an assassin feigning death seized her. Dragging her before Ning Yuxuan, the captor demanded his men retreat five miles.

She told Ning Yuxuan not to save her, declaring she would bear the consequences of her own actions. To her astonishment, Ning Yuxuan ordered his men to withdraw. The assassin then demanded Ning Yuxuan drop his sword, and after a moment of hesitation marked by a painful memory, he complied. During the ensuing struggle, Ning Yuxuan was stabbed in the abdomen. He grabbed his companion, and with attackers in close pursuit, they leaped into a river to escape.

The next day, Ning Yuxuan awoke to Gui Bai, who reported that his companion had dragged him from the water. While some assassins were killed, the captured ones had all committed suicide. Ning Yuxuan, certain that Lord Ling was behind the escalating attacks, ordered Gui Bai to discreetly investigate the real Nie Sangyu's whereabouts in the capital.

He explained that when they emerged from the river, he saw through a tear in her clothing that her shoulder was bare, with no birthmark. This confirmed his growing suspicion that the woman with him was an impostor. Elsewhere, Ling Jianxing was furious about the failed mission. He then received a secret letter from Lord Tan, advising him to let Ning Yuxuan reach Haifang, where they could collaborate to trap and eliminate him.

In another location, Yuan Lang learned his subordinates had failed to locate Ning Yuxuan and his "little sister." He concluded the assassins were Ning Yuxuan's political enemies and resolved to rescue her from the dangerous situation soon. As she tended to Ning Yuxuan's wound, his companion made him promise never to drop his sword for anyone again, including her, to which he agreed. She helped him rest against her, vowing to protect him.

Ning Yuxuan reflected that she was the first person ever willing to face death with him, strengthening his resolve to help her recover her memory and uncover the truth of her identity. They arrived at the dilapidated magistrate's residence in Haifang. On the journey, they had playfully nicknamed each other "Hongzhu" (Red Pig) and "Lanzhu" (Lazy Pig).

She noted the sign had incorrectly written characters, but Ning Yuxuan interpreted them as a virtuous message: the character for "guilt" was missing a stroke, and the one for "people" had an extra, signifying an official who wished to have less guilt and care more for the people. She wondered how such a man could have been accused of corruption before his suicide.

The trial hall frightened her, but Ning Yuxuan reminded her it was tradition for the magistrate's family to live there. In the backyard, she screamed upon finding a coffin and ran to Ning Yuxuan. He calmly investigated and found it empty. He explained the previous magistrate's family had perished with him, so the coffin and a mourning hall setup were clearly a warning meant for him, the new magistrate.

He gave her a bead to motivate her to clean the dusty room. Soon after, the local staff arrived, acting lazy and disrespectful. Ning Yuxuan recognized this as a tactic to drive him away, just as they had his predecessors, and began plotting how he would return their "gift."
