After 12 years, Bai Haoyu returns to China, hoping to reunite with his childhood friend, Li Huizhen. While Bai Haoyu has transformed into a handsome man, Li Huizhen feels her current ordinary appearance makes her unworthy of him. At their planned meeting, Bai Haoyu mistakenly identifies Li Huizhen's beautiful friend, Xia Qiao, as the Li Huizhen he remembers.
Feeling disheartened, Li Huizhen persuades Xia Qiao to impersonate her, initially intending for Xia Qiao to give Bai Haoyu a final, positive memory before he returns to the US. However, Bai Haoyu is determined to care for "Li Huizhen," drawing Xia Qiao into the deception. Xia Qiao, using stories from Li Huizhen's past, spends time with Bai Haoyu, enjoying his company and gradually developing feelings for him, despite her growing guilt.
The situation becomes more complicated when Li Huizhen discovers that Bai Haoyu is her new, demanding deputy editor-in-chief at work, constantly criticizing her. During a KTV outing, Bai Haoyu becomes drunk, and Li Huizhen instinctively rushes to him, calling him "Pang Yu," his childhood nickname, which sparks a sense of familiarity in Bai Haoyu. He increasingly feels a connection to the real Li Huizhen.
After a period of miscommunication and a temporary departure, Li Huizhen returns to work having undergone a complete transformation, becoming elegant and confident. Bai Haoyu, now deeply drawn to the transformed Li Huizhen, confesses his feelings to her. However, Li Huizhen is distraught to learn that he has also been dating Xia Qiao. Soon after, Bai Haoyu discovers Xia Qiao's deception at a hotel, realizing she is Li Huizhen's friend and not the person he believed her to be.
He confronts Xia Qiao, who admits her actions. Bai Haoyu then emotionally reunites with the true Li Huizhen. The revelation causes a significant rift between Li Huizhen and Xia Qiao, leading to a heated argument and Li Huizhen moving out, regretting her initial decision to have Xia Qiao impersonate her. Despite their reunion, Li Huizhen decides to delay publicly revealing her relationship with Bai Haoyu, taking Xia Qiao's feelings into consideration.
