CAEA's annual meeting was grandly held in a magnificent venue. Tong Wei attended the annual meeting and successfully met Cai Tianlan with the introduction of Director Qu. Tong Wei seemed very nervous in front of President Cai. The president praised Tong Wei's achievements over the past year. Just as Tong Wei wanted to speak to arrange a meeting with the president, other guests got ahead of her.
After Tong Wei met other negotiation representatives, she looked around but Cai Tianlan was already gone. She rushed out of the banquet hall to search everywhere and finally found him at the hotel entrance. Tong Wei successfully met Cai Tianlan and brought up her parents to him. Cai Tianlan said he was a close friend of her parents. Tong Wei stated her purpose: she wanted to ask Cai Tianlan to verify the reason for her parents' suicide.
Cai Tianlan, however, repeatedly declined, not wanting to bring up old matters. Unable to resist Tong Wei's persistent pleas, Cai Tianlan finally agreed to speak. Back then, Cai Tianlan and Tong Wei's parents were classmates in business school. After graduation, Tong Wei's father insisted on returning to China to serve the country. Her mother followed without complaint and soon after became pregnant with Tong Wei. After returning to China, Tong Wei's father joined a foreign company.
Although the foreign company offered excellent conditions, Tong Wei's father successively offended many influential people due to his lack of social tact. Many years later, Cai Tianlan and Tong Wei's father reunited during a negotiation for a multinational corporation. At that dinner, Tong Wei's parents told Cai Tianlan that due to various career setbacks, they decided to emigrate to the United States after that negotiation case was concluded.
That night, the three reunited old friends drank a lot of wine and even made plans for how they would live together after returning to the United States. However, unexpectedly, the next day brought sudden changes. In the second round of negotiation meetings, Tong Wei's father was taken away by people from the procuratorate, suspected of accepting bribes during the negotiations. Afterward, Tong Wei's mother found Cai Tianlan.
She cried and confessed to Cai Tianlan that Tong Wei's father had indeed made a mistake and handed him Tong Wei's father's diary. The diary recorded all the setbacks Tong Wei's father encountered at the company. He was once a prodigy in his youth but achieved nothing in middle age, which ultimately led to a change in his mindset, forcing him onto the path of bribery.
The entire process recorded in Tong Wei's father's diary would become irrefutable evidence for sentencing. Therefore, the agitated Tong Wei's mother tore out those pages from the diary at that time. Tong Wei's father, returning from the procuratorate, suffered a mental breakdown. Cai Tianlan advised him to be rational, suggesting that a good lawyer could help reduce his sentence. Tong Wei's father refused to face all this and said he wanted to be alone in the room to calm down.
But just as Cai Tianlan was comforting Tong Wei's mother, he suddenly learned that Tong Wei's father had jumped from a building. Tong Wei's mother, unable to bear this blow, sent Cai Tianlan, who was accompanying her, away and followed her husband in jumping to her death. Tong Wei, suddenly learning the whole truth, realized that her father had indeed done something wrong.
The faith that had supported Tong Wei through one hardship after another for so many years collapsed overnight. She didn't know how to face this sudden blow, and tears flowed with every step she took. After Tong Wei left Cai Tianlan's room, she received a call from Xie Xiaofei. Tong Wei cried out "Xiaofei" and then said nothing more. Xie Xiaofei immediately realized that something had happened to Tong Wei.
After asking Tracy for Tong Wei's hotel address in Suzhou, he rushed to Suzhou overnight. Tong Wei had been completely out of contact for an entire night. Xie Xiaofei arrived at the hotel early the next morning and saw Tong Wei, who had just returned from outside. The extremely haggard Tong Wei fainted directly into Xie Xiaofei's arms.
Xie Xiaofei guarded Tong Wei's bedside until she woke up, only then learning that Cai Tianlan had told Tong Wei last night that her father had indeed taken bribes. Shanshan asked Xie Xiaofei to kick the door open. Xia Shanshan saw Tong Wei's depressed state and tried to comfort her, telling her to let go of the past and move forward. But Tong Wei was unwilling to speak much, just silently shedding tears, and she asked Shanshan to leave. This angered Xia Shanshan. She couldn't bear to see Tong Wei in such a weak state, yet couldn't help but worry about her.
Shanshan angrily shouted at the door, asking if Tong Wei no longer wanted her as a friend. However, pregnant Shanshan shouldn't get emotional, so the nanny persuaded her to leave first. Xie Xiaofei was truly at his wit's end. He sat by the door of Tong Wei's room, guarding her day and night.
