Wang Yongge voluntarily turned himself in, admitting that he had caused the death of a thief who fell from the train years ago. He was taken into custody but felt an unprecedented sense of relief, as if a heavy burden had finally been lifted. He expressed a strong desire to see Ma Kui. Ma Kui visited Wang Yongge in the detention center.

During their meeting, Wang Yongge tearfully pleaded with Ma Kui to consent to the marriage between Wang Xin and Ma Yan, even offering to disown Wang Xin as his son if it would help. Despite Wang Yongge’s desperate pleas, including kneeling, Ma Kui remained resolute and left without giving his approval. Meanwhile, Wang Xin longed for Ma Yan but hesitated to approach her directly.

He was seen lingering near her home, and although Ma Yan saw him from her window as she braved the cold weather at her market stall, she gave him a cold shoulder. Wang Xin left ointment for frostbite hanging near her stall, but she refused to accept it. Mustering courage, Wang Xin sought out Ma Yan at the market. Ma Yan tearfully told him that she wanted to break up.

Wang Xin insisted she was the only one for him, but Ma Yan explained that seeing him constantly reminded her of the suffering her family, especially her father, had endured over the past decade because of his family's actions. She recounted painful childhood memories of being bullied and seeing her mother ill and alone, attributing her swallowed tears over the years to their family. She felt she couldn't overcome the pain or face him, believing she didn't deserve him.

Ma Kui happened to pass by and overheard Ma Yan's raw emotional confession, which clearly affected him deeply. Following an investigation that clarified the details of the incident and the deceased's prior criminal behavior, Wang Yongge's case was dropped due as the statute of limitations had expired. He was released from custody, having refused bail earlier.

Wang Xin picked up his father, who was physically present but suffering from significant memory lapses and confusion, though he remained lucid about the past crime. Wang Yongge repeatedly asked about Ma Yan, and Wang Xin struggled to respond truthfully, saddened by his father's deteriorating condition. Ma Kui was informed of Wang Yongge's release but offered no immediate comment. In a separate development, Jia Jinlong and Yao Yuling were shown to be happily married.

Jia Jinlong's business was thriving, allowing him to buy another apartment. During an anniversary celebration marked by generous gifts, he revealed his plan to use the new apartment to bring Yao Yuling's mother to live nearby. Overcome with emotion, Yao Yuling then shared the joyful news that she was pregnant, which delighted Jia Jinlong. Wang Yongge's post-stroke condition caused him to forget he had already turned himself in and been released.

He repeatedly wrote confession letters and attempted to surrender at the police station, becoming agitated when reminded the case was closed and he had been home for months. Wang Xin dutifully retrieved him each time, managing his father's confusion. Shen Xiuping, showing care, arranged for Wang Xin to take his father to see a specialist in the provincial hospital.

During one instance where Wang Xin went to retrieve his father from the station, he rode his bicycle home and saw Ma Yan working at her stall at the intersection. They shared a silent, poignant look. Wang Xin, understanding the depth of the hurt his family had caused and the impossibility of their relationship under the circumstances, rode away with his father, silently vowing to protect her from afar for the rest of her life, knowing she deserved better.

Exhausted from his ordeal, Wang Yongge dozed on the back of Wang Xin's bike. Just then, Ma Kui appeared, helping to steady the bike and support the older man. Ma Kui took Wang Yongge's latest confession letter and tore it into pieces, a symbolic act of letting go of the past.

He also commented to Wang Xin, using an analogy about needing to leave his father's household register, and handed him a household register, signifying his long-awaited approval for Wang Xin and Ma Yan to marry. Wang Xin was overcome with emotion. Wang Xin and Ma Yan dressed up and went to the marriage registration office. Wang Yongge watched from a window and smiled with contentment as he saw them go.

Elsewhere, Shen Xiuping was seen burying medicine dregs under a tree and leaving secretively. Cai Xiaonian observed her and retrieved the dregs. Cai's mother, also aware of the strong smell of medicine around Shen Xiuping's home and having seen a pair of men's shoes she believed were too large for Shen Xiuping, grew suspicious that Shen Xiuping was hiding an illness.

She went to check on Shen Xiuping, who refused to let her in, insisting she was just tired, but the strong smell of medicine lingered. The Cai family continued to speculate, with Cai Xiaonian's mother convinced the shoes belonged to a man, possibly Ma Kui, given their perceived closeness, though her husband cautioned against gossip. Soon after, Ma Jian and other children were playing soccer when their ball went into Shen Xiuping's house through an open door.

Shen Xiuping reacted with uncharacteristic anger, yelling and roughly forcing them out. Later, Ma Jian reported to Ma Kui that he had seen someone lying covered in bed in Shen Xiuping's house and described how frightening Shen Xiuping had been. Ma Kui reflected on the shame his own father had brought upon their family after his divorce when he was arrested for hooliganism, sensing Shen Xiuping might be hiding something similarly embarrassing.

The police arrived at Shen Xiuping's home, drawing a crowd of curious neighbors. The officers stated they were verifying the presence of a recently released individual living in the community. When they revealed the person was Shen Xiuping's father, who had been released after serving time for hooliganism, the neighbors became agitated and demanded that he be made to leave the community.
