This resonated with Han Shengzhi, who finally shed his personal resentments and offered to treat everyone to drinks at a tavern that night.
Later, Principal Feng summoned Feng Chengjun and Wen Bin to discuss the upcoming competition. He explained that participants would draw lots to form two-person teams, then search within a designated area for a map torn in half, which would reveal the precise location of a drum. The first team to find it would win.
Wen Bin initially hesitated, recognizing the physical challenge, but her resolve strengthened upon learning the rewards: 100 character points, a thousand mace, and direct entry into the imperial exam. With Feng Chengjun’s encouragement, she agreed to participate. The team drawing commenced, overseen by Mr. Li Hu. Han Shengzhi's attitude towards Wen Bin had noticeably improved; he was no longer hostile but eager to work together for victory. During their physical training for the competition, Han Shengzhi even thoughtfully prepared honey water for everyone, a gesture that pleased the students and showed his significant transformation. As the competition officially began, the three teams from the first area set off.
Mr. Li Hu instructed the other students to return to the academy and await results, then, subtly changing into a black, masked outfit, he pursued the competitors up the mountain. Meanwhile, Mr. Ding (Ding Ruo Yang) had grown suspicious of Mr. Li Hu. He traveled around, showing a drawing of Li Hu, asking if anyone recognized him. He unexpectedly encountered Qin Bei Chuan, an old acquaintance.
Overwhelmed with emotion, they tearfully recalled the tragic event surrounding Xue Ding Kun's death years ago. Qin Bei Chuan revealed that he had once submitted a memorial about the incident, which was guarded by Li Hu, Ke Shi Jun, and two other fellow students. However, at the last moment, the memorial was mysteriously swapped with a banned book. The mystery had remained unsolved. Mr. Ding, now deep in thought, showed Qin Bei Chuan the drawing of Mr. Li Hu.
Qin Bei Chuan was shocked, identifying the person in the drawing as Li Hu. Ding Ruo Yang realized the truth: Li Hu, believing Han Zheng Liang, Lei Qi Ying, and Feng Jichang were responsible for his revered teacher Xue Ding Kun's death, had assumed the alias Mr. Li Hu and infiltrated the academy. His true purpose was to seek revenge by killing their descendants: Han Shengzhi, Lei Zexin, and Feng Chengjun.
Knowing the grave danger, Ding Ruo Yang galloped up the mountain. He arrived just as Li Hu had knocked out the three students and was preparing to bury them alive. Ding Ruo Yang managed to stop the tragedy, urgently explaining to Li Hu that Feng Jichang was not involved in the murder.
He also revealed that Lei Qi Ying had not executed Xue Ding Kun’s family but had, in fact, saved his widow and orphan, and that Wen Bin was Xue Ding Kun’s own child. Wen Bin, hidden behind a tree, had overheard their entire conversation. Unable to bear it any longer, she stepped out and tearfully asked Ding Ruo Yang if his words were true. He reluctantly confirmed it, promising to tell her the full story later.
Wen Bin was overwhelmed, heartbroken that her mother had never shared the painful truth about their difficult past and her noble lineage. Because Mr. Li Hu had knocked them unconscious as part of a hidden test designed to evaluate their vigilance, none of the three teams won the competition. The actual winners were Liu Xiaotong and Zhu Yongjia. Wen Bin, however, was indifferent to the outcome; her sole desire was to learn everything from Ding Ruo Yang.
So, Ding Ruo Yang and Li Hu recounted the entire story of what had happened years ago. With tears streaming down her face, Wen Bin learned for the first time that her surname was Xue and that she had a truly great father. Li Hu, a man of deep loyalty, then revealed the memorial tablet of his beloved teacher, Xue Ding Kun, which he had secretly kept. Seeing her father’s tablet, Wen Bin knelt in reverence, weeping profusely.
After Lei Zexin regained consciousness, Li Hu truthfully revealed his identity as Li Hu, a close friend and former schoolmate of Lei Zexin's late elder brother, Lei Ze Xun. Lei Zexin realized Li Hu was one of the few who survived the incident years ago, and Li Hu admitted he was now a fugitive, secretly investigating the past. Ding Ruo Yang urged Lei Zexin to trust Li Hu and help him keep his true identity a secret.
Later, Han Shengzhi hosted a gathering at his home for his schoolmates, even inviting Mu Xiao Man to perform music. He was no longer the overbearing President they once knew but a genuinely friendly host eager to strengthen their friendships. During the party, Han Shengzhi urged Feng Chengjun to meet with his sister, Han Shumin. Feng Chengjun agreed, and this time, he finally clarified his position to Han Shumin.
He told her he could not go against his own heart or deceive her sincere feelings, and thus, he wished to call off their engagement. Han Shumin was heartbroken, her spirit crushed. After Feng Chengjun left, she frantically ate food, hoping to numb her profound pain. Meanwhile, an unnamed antagonist discussed with a subordinate the continued search for Ke Shi Jun, who had not been seen since sustaining an injury.
They also noted that a "short man in black" was frequently distributing account books and contents of the Book of Ten Thousand Words, implying an ongoing exposure of corruption. The antagonist considered framing the short man in black for more murders to lure him out, while also planning to eliminate other individuals on a hidden list. Wen Bin later spoke with Feng Chengjun, still seeking the deeper truth about her family's past. She expressed her confusion and sorrow, longing for complete answers about her identity and history. Feng Chengjun promised to face any future challenges with her.
