The sesame pancake shop suddenly caught fire. The big yellow dog that always lingered at the entrance barked loudly, waking the nearby neighbors, who all came to help put out the fire. Seeing that the fire was too fierce and no one had come out, Lin Fan soaked himself with water and dashed into the blaze to rescue anyone inside. But just as he entered, the entire building collapsed. His wife fainted on the spot when she saw this.
The next day, Li Qingyue blamed Bai Jiusi for being cold and heartless for not rushing in to help. Bai Jiusi told Li Qingyue that even if the pancake shop owner hadn't died in the fire, he would have passed away that very night anyway. It was the will of the heavens and could not be changed.
While Bai Jiusi and Li Qingyue were arguing, Lin Fan's wife came out and sorrowfully told Li Qingyue that her husband was someone who always helped others, even when he knew it was impossible. Lin Fan's wife was about to give birth, but due to a difficult labor, her life was at risk. Bai Jiusi recalled how he and Li Qingyue had once undergone a tribulation together and had wished for a child.
His mindset had been changed by Lin Fan, so he secretly used his powers to help Lin Fan’s wife Shi Hua safely deliver the baby. Li Qingyue sensed the surge of spiritual energy and knew that Bai Jiusi had broken the taboo to help Shi Hua. She was worried about Bai Jiusi’s safety but also respected him deeply, so she didn’t barge into his room, instead quietly staying nearby to help him if needed.
Jiang Bian, unable to adjust to the sudden change in his identity, wanted his parents to bring him home. While writing a letter in his room, he was summoned to guard the mountain gate. Though very reluctant, he had no choice but to obey orders. Zhang Suan and Fan Ling Er got lost while walking through the forest. Suddenly, two simple-minded bandits appeared, claiming they only robbed money, not people. Fan Ling Er was annoyed and felt insulted.
She and Zhang Suan gave the two bandits a light punishment, then asked for directions down the mountain. Reminded by the bandits, Zhang Suan recalled Li Qingyue had mentioned Songhe County before and suspected she might be there now. Without hesitation, he set off for Songhe County. After seven days of recovery in his room, Bai Jiusi finally came out. Li Qingyue didn’t expose his secret use of power, and the two shared a mutual understanding.
However, her opinion of him had changed—she even made nourishing soup for Bai Jiusi. Life returned to its usual calm, and time passed day by day. In the blink of an eye, five years had gone by, and Lin Tao had grown up. One day, Lin Tao ran to play at Bai Jiusi’s doorstep. She was very affectionate toward him, but Bai Jiusi misunderstood, thinking she had caused trouble again and had come to him for help.
Lin Tao brought Bai Jiusi before a group of her friends and declared he was her father. The other children didn’t believe it, saying they didn’t look alike. Understanding that Lin Tao didn’t want others to know she had no father and might be bullied because of it, Bai Jiusi acknowledged the role of being her father. That night, Bai Jiusi carried Lin Tao home. Li Qingyue stood at the door with a lantern, waiting the whole time.
One rainy night, Bai Jiusi went out to buy osmanthus cake for Li Qingyue. While taking shelter from the rain at a pavilion, he encountered a wandering cultivator carrying an urn of ashes. The cultivator was friendly and told Bai Jiusi the story behind the ashes, explaining that the world outside had become chaotic and the people were suffering. Hearing about the people’s hardships stirred something in Bai Jiusi’s heart—he was no longer as cold and indifferent as before.
After the rain stopped, the cultivator was about to leave when he suddenly sensed a demon approaching. Seeing that Bai Jiusi remained unflustered, he realized Bai Jiusi was no ordinary person. The next morning, Bai Jiusi went to the market with Li Qingyue to buy osmanthus cake and discovered that a murder had taken place. He went to investigate, and seeing that Bai Jiusi had started to care about worldly suffering, Li Qingyue felt comforted.
Shi Hua brought food to Bai Jiusi to express her gratitude, but nearby neighbors gossiped. Suddenly, a demon targeted Lin Tao. To save her, Bai Jiusi once again broke the taboo and used his powers. Li Qingyue sensed it and rushed over to check on Bai Jiusi.
