A young man about to undergo an amputation came to Chen Maidong to inquire about the cremation fees, trying to decide whether to cremate his entire body or just the leg. Chen Maidong saw the man's pessimism toward life and his preoccupation with money. He told him that everyone goes through moments of weariness with life—some for big reasons, some for small—but the weight of suffering is the same for all.

Because all beings are equal, no one can escape life and death. Only by living with all one’s strength can one prove their uniqueness. Zhuang Jie was soon returning to Shanghai, and this trip would mean separating from Chen Maidong. Cui Ge came to find Zhuang Jie personally—mainly because she was Wang Xixia’s close friend—and felt that she might better understand Wang Xixia’s preferences. He brought out a custom-made gold ring, hoping she could give him some advice.

Seeing the mahjong-shaped gold ring engraved with a big “Xi” character, Zhuang Jie didn’t know how to comment on Cui Ge’s taste, but she could tell that this man genuinely wanted to marry Wang Xixia and was full of sincerity. He suddenly understood that perhaps parting in life was even more terrifying. Chen Maidong showed his vulnerable side to Zhuang Jie. He didn’t want to keep pretending to be strong, nor did he want her to disappear from his life in any form. Zhuang Jie was deeply moved and responded with the same affection.
