Two days later, Zhuang Jie followed the advice in the letter. Grandma Chen couldn’t bear to see her grandson being bullied, so she stormed over to Ci Wei’s house with a sickle, taking on his whole family single-handedly without losing the upper hand. Worried about both Grandma Chen and Chen Maidong, Zhuang Jie brought a fruit basket to the Chen household. When the chicken soup was ready, she personally went upstairs to call Chen Maidong for dinner.

Compared to Grandma Chen’s commanding presence, Chen Maidong seemed slightly lacking. With a faint bruise still visible on his left cheek, he looked like a pitiful little puppy, sulking on the couch. Glancing at Zhuang Jie, he suddenly asked whether she had ever had feelings for him. Though Zhuang Jie admitted she had, she stubbornly claimed she’d never thought about a future together. Chen Maidong, irritated, accused her of being a tease. There was a cold edge to Chen Maidong’s words.

He was like a sleeping cat suddenly baring its claws, leaving Zhuang Jie both embarrassed and angry. Just as she was about to leave, Chen Maidong grabbed her wrist and pinned her down. On his way to the funeral home that morning, Chen Maidong had his apprentice buy braised chicken, just as an excuse to see Zhuang Jie again. Meanwhile, Zhuang Jie personally went to the station to say goodbye to Ji Tong. Chen Maidong witnessed the scene, especially when the two nearly hugged, and was instantly overwhelmed with jealousy. He walked straight up, grabbed Zhuang Jie’s hand, and pulled her off the train, forcefully declaring his claim.

Still burning with jealousy, Chen Maidong kissed Zhuang Jie again. This time, she didn’t resist, returning the kiss with deep affection as they embraced tightly. This moment became a turning point for both of them. Now daring to face their feelings, their relationship quickly deepened, and Zhuang Jie became a shy and gentle woman in front of Chen Maidong.

Meanwhile, Wang Xixia, buying more medicinal patches at the traditional medicine shop for Zhuang Jie, was surprised to discover that the physician was Cui Ge. She awkwardly left her phone number and ordered twenty patches to help with residual limb nerve pain. Zhuang Jie playfully responded to Wang Xixia, saying that if she was interested in dating him, she could give it a try — and if it didn’t work out, there was no need to force anything.

Love couldn’t be compelled. After leaving the pharmaceutical factory, Zhuang Jie saw Chen Maidong waiting for her outside, and her heart warmed. He took her home and personally cooked for her, taking care of her in every way. When discussing the nature of their relationship, Zhuang Jie’s tone became serious. Having experienced so much, she had learned since childhood how to read adults’ moods, how to survive, and had developed maturity, intelligence, and worldly savvy far beyond her peers.

Thus, Zhuang Jie believed that clarity comes from calculation, and calculation comes from not loving enough. It was almost impossible to expect adults to throw themselves into love recklessly, and she didn’t hold any naive fantasies. She told Chen Maidong that while she did like him, she liked Shanghai even more. Between him and Shanghai, she would make the most rational choice. Chen Maidong listened and, though pretending to be unfazed, felt a deep sense of disappointment inside.

Soon after, Zhuang Jie successfully secured the pharmaceutical factory project and learned from Director Shao that Chen Maidong had played a big role. He had not only spoken to the factory director about the Liao family’s situation but also personally vouched for the product.

Since the factory director’s father had once been helped by Chen Maidong, he had been looking for a chance to return the favor — and this time, with Chen Maidong taking the initiative, he was sure to take it seriously. Zhuang Jie was overjoyed and went to find Chen Maidong, affectionately wrapping her arms around his neck, applying lip balm for him while whispering sweet words — only to have his mother suddenly emerge from the room.
