Story of Kunning Palace Recap

Episode 1 Recap

When she was very young, Wan Niang told Jiang Xuening that the most noble woman in the world was the Empress, and the palace where the Empress lived was called Ning’an Palace. The young Jiang Xuening was very curious about what the splendid and dignified Ning’an Palace looked like.

Sitting under a leaky eave in the countryside, she thought, if only she could become a wild goose flying across the sky, flying to the bustling capital, entering the imperial palace to see Ning’an Palace for herself, how wonderful that would be. Later, Jiang Xuening did arrive in the capital, but everything that happened was completely different from what she had imagined—glory turned into strife, a lifetime of absurdity.

Her beloved family was massacred, her savior died tragically because of her, and the one she saved turned traitor and forced his way into the palace, staining the imperial city with blood. Everyone wanted Jiang Xuening dead. Xie Wei, the Crown Prince Grand Preceptor, was the main instigator of the coup that slaughtered the city. After that day, the Yan clan’s army controlled the imperial city.

Jiang Xuening understood that the great structure had collapsed, and it was time for her to pay the price. So she met with Xie Wei and expressed her willingness to take the blame for regicide, asking only that Xie Wei assist the court in selecting a new ruler, in exchange for fulfilling one request. Jiang Xuening spoke slowly.

In her life, she had used many people, but looking back, she had betrayed Yan Lin’s deep affection, and Yan Lin had taken revenge on her. She had promoted people like Xue Dingfei and Zhou Yinzhizhi, who in turn used her to rise in power. She had schemed against Shen Jie to gain the position of Empress, and now she would have to die with him.

Jiang Xuening believed she owed nothing to anyone—except one person, who had always been righteous. She had coerced and harmed him, leading him astray and destroying half his life’s reputation. Zhang Zhe was a good official. Jiang Xuening hoped Xie Wei would remember how she once fed him blood during their journey to the capital, and spare Zhang Zhe’s life. Exchanging Jiang Xuening’s life for a mere Zhang Zhe—though Xie Wei thought it absurd, he ultimately agreed.

When she finished speaking, Jiang Xuening took her own life beneath the sword. Her blood splattered onto Xie Wei’s face, and when Yan Lin rushed in, he believed Xie Wei had killed her. Jiang Ning hesitated to write such an ending—this was her heart and soul poured into Story of Kunning Palace—but it wasn’t the outcome she was satisfied with. Editors had always pressured her to add abusive and dramatic plotlines for the sake of market appeal.

She didn’t want to promote such values, so she insisted on writing it her way or ending the contract. She hoped to let Jiang Xuening live again with the memories of her past life, to understand what she had done wrong and what she ought to do, and not repeat her mistakes. And so, in Jiang Ning’s writing, Jiang Xuening was reborn, determined never to enter the palace again and to live a free life.

Jiang Xuening suddenly opened her eyes, beside her were Yan Lin and Shen Jie. At this moment, she was still the second daughter of the Jiang family, Shen Jie was still Prince Linzi, and Yan Lin was the heir of Marquis Yongyi. Shen Jie received a solid slap from Jiang Xuening, stunning both sides.

Jiang Xuening was confused—just a moment ago, she was in Ning’an Palace, so why had she returned to the time when she was dressed as a man? It seemed Shen Jie had not yet ascended the throne, and nothing had happened to the Yan family. Something was off. Confirming the date, Jiang Xuening hurriedly left. The bustling streets were the same as before, yet everything felt like a different world—could such absurdity truly exist?

Yan Lin and Shen Jie rushed off to attend Xie Wei’s class. Since they were late and hadn’t brought their instruments, they were mocked by Xue Ye of the Duke Dingguo’s residence. Enraged, Yan Lin fought with Xue Ye. Xie Wei was furious and punished both by making them stand in the corridor. Shen Jie volunteered to join them in reflection. Jiang Xuening returned to the Jiang residence, but thought of Wan Niang’s death.

Unfortunately, some things could no longer be changed. Four years ago, Jiang Xuening had been brought back to the Jiang residence. Lady Meng, the wife of the Jiang household, held her hand in tears, claiming to be her biological mother. Jiang Xuening also had a sister named Jiang Xuehui, but it was Wan Niang who had swapped them. Jiang Xuening had lived over ten years as an illegitimate daughter, while Jiang Xuehui had become the sole legitimate daughter.

Jiang Xuening demanded that Lady Meng declare publicly that she was the only legitimate daughter of the Jiang family, but Meng said family disgrace couldn’t be made public. She found an excuse, allowing Jiang Xuening to become the legitimate second daughter. Jiang Xuening had a fierce argument with Meng, straining the relationship between her and her birth mother in order to protect Wan Niang.

Four years later, Lady Meng brought Jiang Xuehui to Jiang Xuening’s room to assert dominance and beat her. But this time, Jiang Xuening had figured it out. Although she and Meng were biologically connected, Wan Niang always stood between them. Yan Lin admired Jiang Xuening and secretly told Shen Jie her identity, planning to propose to the Jiang family during her coming-of-age ceremony in two months. Though Jiang Xuening had a notorious reputation, Yan Lin didn’t care.

Jiang Xuehui brought some ointment to Jiang Xuening. Madam Wang, who had brought Jiang Xuening back years ago, accepted it without question but was slapped by Jiang Xuening. In the room, only the maids Lian’er and Tang’er were loyal, the rest no longer respected her. Jiang Xuening had once ignored it, but now it was time to take charge. Formerly arrogant and domineering, Jiang Xuening scared Lian’er and Tang’er into kneeling and begging for forgiveness.

She put on a show and ordered them to be quiet. Calling in the servants, she discovered many of her belongings had been stolen—justice had to be served. Father Jiang was playing chess with Xie Wei, but rushed over upon hearing the news. The servants thought Jiang Xuening had no evidence and denied everything. Jiang Xuening called for the account books and confronted them.

Holding a book in hand, she performed theatrically, and Father Jiang played along, ordering a search of the rooms. Seeing this, the servants burst into tears and confessed. Father Jiang was pleased with Jiang Xuening’s performance, and she also handled the servants well. Until the sudden appearance of Xie Wei reminded Jiang Xuening of the scene of her suicide in Ning’an Palace in her previous life. Four years ago, Xie Wei and Jiang Xuening had entered the palace together, but they didn’t know Jiang Xuening carried a terrifying memory they lacked.

Episode 2 Recap

In her past life, Jiang Xuening had once questioned Xie Wei as to why he had committed such treason, only to learn that when they had gone to the capital, Xie Wei had, in Jiang Xuening’s delirium, spoken some treasonous words. After testing her several times and realizing she didn’t remember, he spared her life. But now, Jiang Xuening’s behavior had caught his attention. If he became suspicious, she would be in danger.

Xie Wei realized Jiang Xuening was very different from the rumors—deeply calculating, far from ordinary. On the journey to the capital, he had talked in his fever, and worried that Jiang Xuening might know about his soul-leaving illness, he immediately ordered someone to watch the Jiang family. In her past life, Jiang Xuening had been consumed with gaining the position of Empress and had overlooked too much.

Now, thinking about Xie Wei’s identity and his connections with the Yan family, she felt full of doubt. What should she do in her current situation? Jiang Xuening had once asked about Xie Wei’s relationship with Yan Lin but received no answer. All she knew now was that she had to seize the initiative. Yan Lin went to see his father, who promised to propose to the Jiang family after the coming-of-age ceremony.

Lady Meng did indeed harbor resentment toward Jiang Xuening—every time she saw her, she thought of Wan Niang. Father Jiang joyfully came to her room to discuss the matter of sending a daughter to be a companion reader to a princess. Lady Meng had her mind set on Jiang Xuehui, but Father Jiang still cherished Jiang Xuening and made no decision.

Yan Lin climbed up the tree near the wall, saying he wanted to take Jiang Xuening to the Double Ninth Festival. This was when Jiang Xuening met Shen Zhiyi—Shen Zhiyi fell for Jiang Xuening in male disguise at first sight. Later, when she became a companion in the palace and learned the truth, she was humiliated and furious. Jiang Xuening thought she must avoid her this time. She refused Yan Lin’s invitation.

Father Jiang caught Yan Lin climbing the wall and angrily threw him out. After court, Xie Wei casually brought up political positions, advising Father Jiang to make a firm decision. Jiang Xuening and Yan Lin were close, but rumors were powerful. If one didn’t want to be swept up in the storm, why get involved at all? Because of Yan Lin’s wall-climbing visit, Lady Meng scolded Jiang Xuening harshly.

When Father Jiang returned, Meng discussed with him taking both daughters to a banquet at the Xue residence. Another invitation came from the Qingyuan Bo Residence, and Jiang Xuening immediately thought of You Fangyin, her personal maid in her past life, who had been an illegitimate daughter of that household. Father Jiang was reluctant to curry favor with the Xue family, but finally relented.

Jiang Xuening volunteered to attend the banquet at the You residence on behalf of the Jiang family to show goodwill. At the You residence, Jiang Xuening ignored You Yue and went straight to find You Fangyin, enraging You Yue, who cursed loudly. Hearing that Jiang Xuening had gone to the Qingyuan Bo Residence, Yan Lin immediately followed. Though a daughter of the family, You Fangyin was bullied and even locked up, left to be beaten by the servants.

She cried and begged to see her mother one last time, only to be brutally held under water. Jiang Xuening found her just in time and saved her. Yan Lin arrived shortly after, as did a flood of other guests. Afraid of further embarrassment, Yan Lin advised Jiang Xuening to change clothes. She took You Fangyin to her room. You Fangyin repeatedly thanked Jiang Xuening. Though she knew it was too late, she still wanted to see her mother.

Jiang Xuening held her hand, gave her some money, and urged her to take care of herself. You Fangyin asked why she was being so kind. Jiang Xuening said she too had once been an illegitimate daughter sent to the countryside, dressed poorly and hungry. And they had met long ago—You Fangyin was a good girl. She should live well from now on.

Yan Lin still hoped to take Jiang Xuening to the lantern festival, but before she could refuse, they heard that an honored guest had arrived among the female guests, and he hurried away. Unexpectedly, that guest was Princess Leyang, Shen Zhiyi. Jiang Xuening knew she couldn’t avoid it. Shen Zhiyi had a scar at the corner of her eye, drawing much gossip among the women. Also present was Xue Shu of the Xue residence.

Jiang Xuening tried to keep a low profile and planned to slip away, but Shen Zhiyi came directly to her, saying she was there for Jiang Xuening. On the men’s side, Yan Lin anxiously peered through the screen, worried that Jiang Xuening might be embarrassed. When the ladies were to paint, Jiang Xuening remained still. Shen Zhiyi, seeing this, was displeased and insisted she paint.

Episode 3 Recap

Shen Zhiyi asked Jiang Xuening to paint for her. Jiang Xuening didn’t know how to paint and didn’t want to offend the capricious Shen Zhiyi, so she praised her profusely. Unexpectedly, Shen Zhiyi was not satisfied. Jiang Xuening had no choice but to take a risk and painted a flower on Shen Zhiyi’s scar — a trick that had never failed her before.

Shen Zhiyi’s eyes lit up with amazement, especially after Jiang Xuening said the scar was a badge of honor. Shen Zhiyi then revealed a look Jiang Xuening was all too familiar with and complimented her eloquence, even saying she was starting to like her. Jiang Xuening hastily knelt and begged for mercy. Before leaving, Shen Zhiyi said she would come visit her again, leaving Jiang Xuening frustrated — her silver tongue had landed her in trouble again.

Xie Wei had been secretly protecting the Yan family. When a waiter at the inn delivered something, it turned out to be an assassination attempt on Xie Wei. Fortunately, it was a close call without harm. Jiang Xuening happened to come to the same tavern and was taken hostage by the assailant. Xie Wei tested the man through conversation and confirmed he was one of Prince Pingnan’s men.

Jiang Xuening internally bemoaned her bad luck at running into Xie Wei again and again. But to her surprise, Xie Wei chose to save her. Just then, she noticed a guard on the second floor aiming a crossbow and thought Xie Wei was trying to kill two birds with one stone. Bracing herself, she took a bold risk. When Xie Wei shielded her, the guard killed the assailant. Xie Wei ordered that what happened today must not be made public.

Jiang Xuening still looked frightened, so Xie Wei handed her a handkerchief. She instinctively tried to cover herself, revealing a scar on her wrist — a mark from four years ago when they entered the capital together. Jiang Xuening quickly regained her composure and cleverly assured him she hadn’t seen anything. But Xie Wei warned her that if she didn’t like Yan Lin, she shouldn’t lie and hurt him. This provoked Jiang Xuening into revealing her true nature.

Xie Wei smiled and said if she had acted like this earlier, there would’ve been no need for their act. As for the assassin, he didn’t believe she was that foolish. Outside, Yan Lin kept trying to force his way in, so Xie Wei ordered Jiang Xuening to be sent to him. He had no intention of killing her — the silence was meant to scare her into obedience. Yan Lin finally relaxed when he saw Jiang Xuening.

She once again tested the relationship between Xie Wei and Yan Lin, but Yan Lin didn’t seem to know anything, leading her to temporarily conclude that Xie Wei was more of a friend than a foe to Yan Lin — which was a relief. Jiang Xuening then decided to go see the lanterns.

As the lights came on and the streets buzzed with activity, she and Yan Lin joined the crowd to guess riddles, release lanterns, and bought a lot of things. Later, Yan Lin took her to a spot he had carefully chosen, offering a panoramic view of the city. Yan Lin would soon come of age, and Jiang Xuening was stunned at the mention of his coming-of-age ceremony.

Memories of her past life came flooding back — of Yan Lin condemning her as a liar — words that still haunted her. She asked what he liked about her, saying she would grow up and might change for the worse. But Yan Lin believed she was the best as she was.

Unable to let go of her past, Jiang Xuening pushed him away as he leaned in for a kiss and rejected him, saying she only saw him as her best friend. Yan Lin, undeterred, asked again if she would marry him on the day of his coming-of-age. Back home, Tang’er rushed up to Jiang Xuening in fear and told her that her father wanted to see her.

Jiang Boyou had heard that Shen Zhiyi visited the You family and worried Jiang Xuening had learned about the companion reader selection, preparing excuses in advance. But Jiang Xuening simply stated she wasn’t interested in entering the palace. Xie Wei brought the imperial decree from Prince Pingnan to dismantle the capital’s power structure. After encountering Prince Pingnan’s assassin, Xie Wei asked someone to send a letter to Jinling to find out what was going on.

The Xue family was bent on bringing down the Yan family but lacked evidence, so they planned to fabricate some. Jiang Xuening wanted to help the Yan family but had no one to turn to. She thought of Zhou Yinzhi, whom she had used in her past life to secure her position. Surprisingly, he was still the only one she could count on.

Reflecting on her past life, Jiang Xuening suspected the Yan family massacre might be connected to Zhou Yinzhi. The next day, she visited Zhou Yinzhi. Four years ago, he had come to the capital with her and gone from a Jiang family groom to a member of the Xingwu Guard. She warned him to stay out of the Xue and Yan family conflict, or he would die without a grave.

Episode 4 Recap

Jiang Xuening remembered how Yan Lin had been the first to kill Zhou Yinzhi when storming the palace in her past life. She never imagined she had been the one to bring that viper to Yan Lin’s side. As she left, Jiang Xuening felt uneasy — had she made a mistake visiting Zhou Yinzhi? Remembering Zhang Zhe’s advice in her past life made her even more anxious.

Zhou Yinzhi was surprised by Jiang Xuening’s actions — she shouldn’t have known he had a favorite horse. To eliminate any loose ends, he killed the horse himself. Shen Zhiyi, inspired by Jiang Xuening’s words, came to terms with her scar and no longer tried to hide it. The emperor was gravely ill, beyond medical help. The Empress Dowager, saddened by the emperor’s childlessness, said the country couldn’t go a day without a ruler.

She told Xue Shu to inform her father to begin preparations to appoint Shen Jie as the crown prince. Once Shen Jie became emperor, to ensure the continued prosperity of their clan, the Empress Dowager would do everything in her power to make her niece, Xue Shu, the empress. That day, Xie Wei came to the emperor to request permission to tutor Shen Zhiyi. Soon, the list of companions for Shen Zhiyi in the palace was released.

Madam Meng was furious to see Jiang Xuening’s name and caused a scene, accusing her of scheming. But Jiang Boyou explained that the list was personally approved by the emperor and reassured Jiang Xuehui. Jiang Xuehui pretended to be understanding. She later brought gifts to see Jiang Xuening, expressing regret that she wouldn’t be entering the palace due to fate. But Jiang Xuening loathed her. Four years ago, she hadn’t been so emotionless like a fake saint.

Jiang Xuehui had stolen her status and enjoyed years of luxury, knowing the truth even back then, yet never once asked about her birth mother, Wan Niang. Before her death, Wan Niang had given Jiang Xuening the family heirloom bracelet to pass on to Jiang Xuehui, but Jiang Xuening never did — Jiang Xuehui didn’t deserve it. Jiang Xuehui finally snapped, saying Wan Niang was her birth mother, but she had dragged the Jiang family into disgrace.

She was just trying to protect herself and never thought of revenge. That surprised Jiang Xuening — maybe Jiang Xuehui really was the best candidate for empress. Jiang Xuening was frustrated that she had tried to avoid Shen Zhiyi, yet still ended up being selected to enter the palace. Zhou Yinzhi and Yan Lin had grown close recently.

Jiang Xuening overheard something about Zhou Yinzhi from Yan Lin and quickly warned him that Zhou Yinzhi was ruthless and to be cautious. But the naïve Yan Lin didn’t take it seriously and casually tossed her a bag of peeled pine nuts, knowing she liked eating them but not peeling them. Jiang Xuening found out that Yan Lin had asked Shen Zhiyi to add her name to the list. He even proudly boasted about it to her.

Since Xie Wei loved music, Yan Lin took Jiang Xuening to buy a zither and bought a 3,000-tael one with a grand gesture. While he was away, You Fangyin came to apologize to Jiang Xuening, who noticed fresh emotional wounds on her and advised her to change her fate and live for herself for once. Xie Wei had people monitoring Jiang Xuening. He had helped Yan Lin get her into the palace for his own reasons.

Jiang Xuehui had lit a nameless eternal lamp for four years, and when she left the temple, she brushed past Shen Jie in the crowd. Four years ago, they had met outside the temple. Shen Jie had caught a glimpse of Jiang Xuehui through the carriage window and kept her handkerchief ever since. Jiang Xuehui seemed to hear a familiar voice but didn’t think much of it.

The selected companion readers were You Yue, the daughter of the Director of the Bureau of Astronomy Fang Miao, the daughter of the Marquis of Dingyuan Zhou Baoying, and Jiang Xuening. You Yue flattered Zhou Baoying but looked down on Jiang Xuening, though to Jiang Xuening, they were all familiar faces. The remaining two were Xue Shu and Yao Xi, daughter of the Minister of Personnel. In her past life, Xue Shu had become Shen Jie’s imperial consort.

The girls had to pass an exam to become companions. Jiang Xuening ran into the strict and fearsome Palace Matron Su again and decided to deliberately mess up the test in front of her to get disqualified. Yan Lin, worried that Jiang Xuening wouldn’t pass, dragged Shen Jie to steal the answers but was caught by Xie Wei. Despite Jiang Xuening making obvious mistakes in front of Su, the palace matron didn’t make things difficult and treated her kindly.

Shen Zhiyi came by afterward and asked Jiang Xuening to make incense for her. Jiang Xuening deliberately spilled the incense burner again, but Shen Zhiyi saw her through rose-colored glasses — she genuinely liked Jiang Xuening and wanted her in the palace. Jiang Xuening could only smile bitterly, while You Yue looked at her with even more hatred. Xie Wei asked Yan Lin if he was really sure the one he loved felt the same. But Yan Lin didn’t think that mattered. With no way to manipulate Palace Matron Su, Jiang Xuening set her sights on Xie Wei instead.

Episode 5 Recap

Jiang Xuening was entering the palace for the first time, and Yan Lin was truly worried. He came to see her before the palace gates closed and even brought her some medicine. When Jiang Xuening refused again, Yan Lin repeatedly promised that he would no longer say inappropriate things. Yan Lin also mentioned that today Xie Wei had asked him a question about Jiang Xuening—about how she had disciplined the servants a couple of days ago.

Yan Lin took the blame upon himself, and Jiang Xuening was confident he would cover for her. When Yao Xi heard Zhou Baoying mention the Ministry of Justice, she began to cry uncontrollably. She had originally agreed to the marriage proposal to Zhang Zhe's family, but now that he had offended the Xingwu Guards, she wanted to call off the engagement—yet her father wouldn’t agree.

Yao Xi looked down on Zhang Zhe; her father was a high-ranking official, and Zhang Zhe was not a match for her. You Yue suggested she spread the rumor that Zhang Zhe was jinxed to his wife. Jiang Xuening, who overheard from outside, could no longer contain herself and pushed the door open, dragging You Yue away. Outside in the courtyard, Jiang Xuening dunked You Yue’s head into a water vat before letting her go, shocking everyone around.

Jiang Xuening recalled how well Zhang Zhe had treated her in their previous life. Back then, after she became empress, she had pleaded with Zhang Zhe for help, only for him to be framed and imprisoned. Zhou Yinzhi met with Xue Shu’s father. He had been getting close to Yan Lin lately but still couldn’t steal the official seals. Jiang Xuening asked You Fangyin to bring money to buy silk from Xu Wenying.

Nervous, You Fangyin did as she was told. The silk market was sluggish, and Xu Wenying couldn't sell his stock, but You Fangyin had great faith in Jiang Xuening. The approach with Su Shangyi was a dead end, so Jiang Xuening wisely avoided further trouble and performed exceptionally well that day. Wang Jiu, a Hanlin Academy scholar, didn’t care much about the questions for the study companions, thinking they were just a bunch of girls.

Xie Wei, however, unintentionally agreed with this view. Jiang Xuening’s classmates came to her for help with the exam questions, but knowing they were all unmotivated, she deliberately gave minor hints to make her own performance look worse. Yao Xi arranged a private meeting with Jiang Xuening to ask about her relationship with Zhang Zhe, having reacted strongly the previous night. Jiang Xuening stated that she simply admired Zhang Zhe’s uprightness and was not entangled with him.

Xue Shu, using her father’s connections, got the exam questions in advance—only to find they were exactly the same as Jiang Xuening had predicted. That afternoon, the written exam began. To prevent Jiang Xuening from cheating, Xie Wei had her window opened. After the exam, Xie Wei commented on the results on the spot and was stunned by Jiang Xuening’s answers, staring at her intensely.

After reviewing everyone’s papers, Jiang Xuening cheerfully prepared to leave the palace, only for Xie Wei to rank her as “Excellent. ” Dissatisfied, Jiang Xuening demanded that Xie Wei explain his assessments in detail, but no one wanted to be publicly criticized again. Instead, she was outmaneuvered. At this point, Xie Wei appeared entirely innocent of any treason, and Jiang Xuening realized everyone saw him as a good man. If she alone acted differently, it would only raise suspicion.

So she immediately returned to speak with Xie Wei. Four years ago, she had entered the palace and fed him her blood to save his life, witnessing his uncontrollable side and learning about his soul-separation illness. No matter what secrets he held, eliminating her would be too easy. Jiang Xuening had to take a risky gamble.

Jiang Xuening asked Xie Wei if he feared she might reveal the past and thus brought her into the palace to keep an eye on her. He naturally preferred to watch her closely. To Xie Wei, Jiang Xuening was not a threat, but his desire to trust her was. That was the true danger. He told her to behave for the next six months in the palace. Jiang Xuening realized that there was no more room to retreat.

When Xie Wei saw Yan Lin with Zhou Yinzhi, he grew very concerned. At home, Jiang Xuening was mocked by Lady Meng for snatching Jiang Xuehui’s chance and being doomed even if she became empress.

Episode 6 Recap

Jiang Xuening’s pupils shrank at Lady Meng’s words. Her father quickly scolded Meng and advised Jiang Xuening to speak cautiously in the future. Jiang Xuening said nothing further and left. Looking at herself in the mirror, she remembered how in the previous life she had learned of Jiang Xuehui and Shen Jie’s encounter, then impersonated her to become empress, only to end up in ruin. Perhaps Lady Meng was right—maybe it was her personality that led to such an ending.

This time, Jiang Xuening clearly wanted to change, so why was everyone still pushing her toward the same path? Would Yan Lin and Zhang Zhe still meet the same fates? The Xue family extended their influence into the marquis’ manor, enraging Xie Wei. Only then did he remember that Zhou Yinzhi was the coachman who had entered the capital with Jiang Xuening years ago. Yan Lin brought Zhou Yinzhi to meet with his father.

Jiang Xuening’s expression darkened, and Zhou Yinzhi was clearly uneasy. After Yan Lin left midway, Zhou Yinzhi asked Jiang Xuening for advice. To him, this was a dead end—how could he escape? He had stopped looking for the marquis’s seal and notes, but the Xue family was pressing hard. Zhou Yinzhi tried to brush them off but stumbled upon a major secret: he found evidence belonging to Prince Pingnan in the Yan residence.

Zhou Yinzhi didn’t report it, knowing that even if things succeeded, he would be discarded. Jiang Xuening warned him not to leak the letter and to tell Yan Lin everything—he was old enough to face the truth. Xie Wei made a sudden visit, suggesting a barbecue picnic with Yan Lin. Though surprised, Yan Lin couldn’t refuse. Thus, Xie Wei, Jiang Xuening, Yan Lin, and Zhou Yinzhi sat together—a scene that made Jiang Xuening extremely anxious.

She couldn’t understand Xie Wei’s intentions. Zhou Yinzhi excused himself and slipped away. Jiang Xuening joked with Yan Lin, and Xie Wei scolded them. Furious, Jiang Xuening drank quite a bit. Xie Wei claimed he had business with Jiang Xuening’s father and volunteered to escort her home. He saw through her act, and Jiang Xuening quickly explained that she had nothing to do with Zhou Yinzhi’s actions and had already persuaded him.

Xie Wei warned her not to interfere again, or she’d be unable to protect herself. Jiang Xuening dared to ask about his relationship with Yan Lin—perhaps Xie Wei’s secret was related to the Yan family. Suddenly, an arrow struck their carriage. Xie Wei jumped out after identifying the shooter and had Jiang Xuening sent home. Following Jiang Xuening’s advice, Zhou Yinzhi confessed everything to Yan Lin, who immediately confronted his father.

Yan’s father revealed that Yan Lin’s cousin Xue Dingfei was not dead—he was in Prince Pingnan’s hands. The letter from Prince Pingnan confirmed it. Yan Lin was shocked, realizing this could shake the emperor’s trust. But the letter had fallen into their hands, becoming leverage. Xue Dingfei was the son of Yan’s father’s sister. On her deathbed, she had tried to speak but couldn’t.

To the world, Xue Dingfei died protecting the emperor, but in truth, a seven-year-old child had been sacrificed. Was that fair? Yan’s father decided it was time for Yan Lin to know everything. Xie Wei’s true identity was Xue Dingfei. He met alone with Gong Yicheng, Prince Pingnan’s strategist. Gong Yicheng had sent the assassins before and wouldn’t let Xie Wei return easily, but the capital was Xie Wei’s domain—he had no fear.

Meanwhile, Jiang Xuening heard Yan Lin was unwell and rushed to the marquis’ residence. Yan Lin was drunk in his room. He had believed that nothing in life could shake him, but had forgotten how unpredictable life could be. Now everyone knew about Jiang Xuening’s close relationship with him—if the Yan family fell, what would happen to her? Jiang Xuening was touched. Yan Lin didn’t ask how she knew; instead, he worried about her well-being.

Yan Lin understood no one could stay carefree forever. Jiang Xuening held his hand—they would weather this together. Yan Lin was still the vibrant young marquis. The Xue family’s silk boat capsized. For years, they had used the canal system to form private cliques. This couldn’t be exposed—they had to suppress the matter. Xie Wei understood that Prince Pingnan wanted to use the Xue family to eliminate the Yan family, making them too occupied to deal with others.

You Fangyin was learning business with Xu Wenying, who treated her well. She was doing it for Jiang Xuening. Just as You Fangyin left, Lü Xian came to buy silk from Xu Wenying, only to be frustrated that a girl had bought it all just the day before. Zhou Baoying and Fang Miao brought pastries to Jiang Xuening, but she didn’t like sweet snacks and seemed a bit gloomy.

Episode 7 Recap

Yao Xi said Zhang Zhe had broken off the engagement. She saw the letter and deeply regretted her earlier attitude. She admitted Zhang Zhe was indeed as noble and pure as Jiang Xuening had said and brought the letter to question Jiang Xuening about her relationship with him. She believed Zhang Zhe would voluntarily end the engagement. Jiang Xuening advised her to think about what she truly wanted.

But Yao Xi didn’t know—only that Zhang Zhe ended it to spare her future suffering. As a woman, wasn’t marrying a good man the most important thing? Jiang Xuening secretly decided to play the villain. She and Yao Xi were not suited, but she still encouraged her to fight for what she wanted. Everyone had prepared gifts for Shen Zhiyi, except Jiang Xuening, who had brought nothing. Shen Zhiyi assumed she had been mistreated at home and held no grudge.

Xie Wei had saved someone being hunted by the Xue family, gaining leverage over them, and sent people to investigate You Fangyin. Her background was tragic and connections simple—no friends, only two meetings with Jiang Xuening. Xie Wei was puzzled; Jiang Xuening had no dealings with the silk trade. During class, Shen Zhiyi pulled Jiang Xuening to sit in the front row. Xue Shu pretended to be generous and gave up her seat but was clearly upset.

Today was the first lesson. Xie Wei didn’t lecture but introduced the curriculum for the next six months. Xue Shu protested that men and women were inherently different and that women didn’t need such studies. Xie Wei sternly shut her down, leaving her too intimidated to speak again. Jiang Xuening felt uneasy, not understanding why Xie Wei suddenly targeted Xue Shu. But when Xie Wei asked for her opinion, she had no choice but to say harsh things.

Later, Yao Xi said Jiang Xuening wasn’t a bad person, but Xue Shu claimed she was cunning and warned Yao Xi to be cautious. Shen Zhiyi also caught up to Xue Shu to explain, just as they ran into Shen Jie. Xue Shu noticed the handkerchief in his hand was identical to Jiang Xuening’s and silently took note. Yan Lin didn’t come to class today.

Xie Wei asked Jiang Xuening if it was because she stopped Zhou Yinzhi from acting against the Yan family. Was sending You Fangyin to buy silk also for their sake? Jiang Xuening was shocked. She had only wanted You Fangyin to make some money. As for how she knew about silk prices, she said it was just a gamble. Xie Wei had no reason to doubt her, but Lü Xian was furious about the silk issue.

The emperor suspended Xue Shu’s father from duty for half a month. He wanted to delay the crown prince issue and pacify the Ministry of Justice. The Empress summoned Shen Zhiyi and the study companions, but on their way, they saw Zheng Bao being punished. In the previous life, Shen Jie had saved Zheng Bao, who later became his most trusted aide and died for him. Jiang Xuening thought if she saved Zheng Bao, he might become loyal to her.

She immediately feigned fear and clung to Shen Zhiyi, who decided to save Zheng Bao. The Empress Dowager, meeting the companions, gave them a harsh welcome and only let Xue Shu stand and talk, leaving the others kneeling. Shen Zhiyi tried to speak up but was stopped by the Empress. The Xue family had just been punished, and the Empress Dowager, already angry, especially disliked Jiang Xuening.

When someone brought her a jade ruyi scepter, she smashed it in a fit of rage. When Xie Wei heard of this, he became very worried, then received an imperial summons. The emperor said someone had faked his decree to deliver the jade ruyi to the Empress Dowager. The case of the “Three Hundred Loyal Souls” was a taboo in the palace.

Xie Wei believed someone from Prince Pingnan’s side had infiltrated the court, but the matter couldn’t be investigated openly. After Xie Wei left, Xue Shu’s father emerged from behind a screen—he had set this up to test Xie Wei, but Xie Wei had already seen through the trap. A major incident had occurred in the palace. Except for Xue Shu, the rest, including Jiang Xuening, knelt in the courtyard awaiting questioning.

But the girls were physically weak, and Jiang Xuening asked if they could be allowed to rest in aside. Jiang Xuening gave the girl beside him a hand, and Shen Jie happened to come to help as well. Their hands touched, and Xue Shu, who had ill intentions, recorded it again.

Episode 8 Recap

After returning, several young ladies were still shaken and spoke of the case of the Loyal Souls from over twenty years ago. Prince Pingnan, the late emperor’s younger brother, had lost in the struggle for the throne but refused to give up and marched his troops northward.

The late emperor managed to escape the palace, but the then Crown Prince—now the current emperor—and the Empress Dowager remained inside, along with Madam Yan and the young heir Xue Dingfei, who happened to be present. Prince Pingnan broke into the palace but did not find the Empress Dowager or the emperor.

He then ordered the city gates heavily guarded and had all the children inside the city captured, forcing the palace attendants to identify the real ones, but none were. He then ordered that unless the real persons were handed over within three days, all the children would be executed. At this critical moment, the seven-year-old Xue Dingfei stepped forward to trade his name for the lives of the innocent civilians.

However, Prince Pingnan still slaughtered all the children, including Xue Dingfei. Later, when the imperial city was reclaimed, Prince Pingnan tried to cover up his heinous crime by setting a massive fire before fleeing. Madam Yan was so overwhelmed with grief that she couldn’t stop crying. People said the Empress Dowager mourned the 300 loyal souls, but Jiang Xuening noticed the Empress Dowager's expression just now didn’t seem to carry any guilt, which made her ponder.

Xue Dingfei’s heritage was unique—born of two great clans. After losing her son, Madam Yan divorced and returned to the Marquis Yongyi's residence, where she soon passed away from illness. The Yan and Xue families ceased contact after the incident. It was said that the title of Duke Xue wasn't originally meant for the current holder, but the situation changed when Duke Xue married Madam Yan.

Less than three months after Madam Yan’s death, Duke Xue married another woman, who gave birth to Xue Shu within seven months—something that raised many eyebrows. Xue Shu was furious when she heard the gossip. After everyone dispersed, Jiang Xuening had a nightmare that night. Still, she reminded herself that the tragedy of the 300 loyal souls belonged to the past—it had nothing to do with her, nor the Yan family.

Shen Jie had no interest in national affairs and quarreled with the Empress Dowager. Shen Zhiyi had to stay with the Empress Dowager and missed her classes. Jiang Xuening was sent outside to stand as punishment by the teacher but still smiled at Xue Shu. When class ended, Xie Wei happened to arrive, saw Jiang Xuening standing outside, and called her in. Xie Wei was teaching a guqin class, his instrument named Emei.

Jiang Xuening was reminded of her past life and wondered whether Xie Wei had become emperor or simply lived playing his guqin. He asked Jiang Xuening to play a piece, but she was not skilled. Her unruly behavior angered Xie Wei, who sent her outside again. The wind stung her eyes, and while she rubbed them, Xie Wei thought she was crying. He softened his tone, came out, and let her back in.

Jiang Xuening continued to act pitifully, hoping to escape the guqin lesson, but unexpectedly, Xie Wei insisted on giving her individual lessons. Shen Jie disliked power struggles, had no desire to be Crown Prince, let alone emperor, and only wanted to live as himself. Yan Lin was inspired by his words, and they decided to go hunting together.

Xie Wei, in his private lesson with Jiang Xuening, mentioned hearing about how she saved a young eunuch named Zheng Bao the previous day. He tested her again, and Jiang Xuening admitted her intentions weren't pure—she just wanted to survive in the palace. Xie Wei didn’t press further but sternly warned her not to get involved in things she shouldn't. Jiang Xuening truly couldn’t play the guqin; the dreadful sound made Xie Wei frown.

When he leaned over to guide her fingers, she was startled, and both she and the guqin tumbled away, though Xie Wei caught the instrument in time. A kitten entered the room, and Jiang Xuening was delighted, but Xie Wei recoiled in fear. When she brought the cat near him, he shoved her away and harshly scolded her. When Jiang Xuening returned feeling upset, Zheng Bao came to thank her.

She admitted her motives weren’t pure, as she feared isolation in the palace. However, Zheng Bao sincerely regarded her as his benefactor. You Fangyin asked Xu Wenyi to help sell off all her silk; she had recently made great progress in learning business and had chosen the right path. Yao Xi received a letter from home saying her father had arranged her marriage with the Zhang family and thanked Jiang Xuening for her help.

Xie Wei met with an informant in the palace, while Jiang Xuening, distracted, encountered the same kitten again. As she held the kitten, she overheard them talking about the jade ruyi. But just then, the cat meowed, and she was discovered by Xie Wei.

Episode 9 Recap

When Jiang Xuening heard that the jade ruyi matter was related to the Yan family, she questioned Xie Wei about it. Xie Wei said her actions might bring disaster to the Yan family. Jiang Xuening retorted, and Xie Wei, startled by the cat in her arms, struck her. The cat fled. The two quarreled, and Xie Wei left in anger while Jiang Xuening looked at the scratch on her hand, deep in thought.

Yan Lin discovered that Duke Xue had been privately stockpiling troops and urgently reported it to his father, who decided they must investigate thoroughly before informing the emperor. Xie Wei heard that Yan’s father had gone to Tongzhou and was puzzled. His class in the palace the day before had been a cover to pass a message, and he returned again today. Lü Xian teased him, saying he was doing it for Jiang Xuening.

Xie Wei admitted she had a kind heart and might eventually open up to them. Jiang Xuening, worried the jade ruyi case would implicate the Yan family, tried to find ways to stop it, but the palace was on high alert, making it difficult. The teacher didn’t use Xie Wei’s textbook but instead taught traditional female virtues. This reminded Jiang Xuening of her previous life, where such dogma was used to unjustly condemn her.

She slammed the desk, declared she was disgusted, and left, claiming stomach trouble. The teacher was furious. In the palace, she encountered Yan Lin and some young lords. Xue Ye made unpleasant remarks, but Yan Lin defended Jiang Xuening’s reputation by saying they were just childhood friends. Afterward, he left with Shen Jie. Yan Lin went to Xie Wei, who kept him back and inquired about his father.

Sensing Yan Lin was troubled, Xie Wei asked him about it, and Yan Lin said Jiang Xuening's personality easily offended others, and since she was alone in the palace, he hoped Xie Wei could look after her. Shen Zhiyi also disliked the lessons on female virtue.

When Xie Wei arrived for the guqin class, he saw the books on their desks and ordered them thrown away, saying women already had too many constraints and they weren’t there to study such things. After class, he asked Jiang Xuening to retrieve a guqin but not just for that reason. Her hand injuries needed treatment, and Xie Wei, setting aside his pride, apologized and promised to handle the jade ruyi matter.

He said Yan Lin had gone to great lengths to get her into the palace so she could learn real skills—she was a raw jade that needed refining. Jiang Xuening asked how he knew she was such. Xie Wei recounted how, four years ago, she had braved danger alone on her way to the capital, unafraid of robbers, even smashing a guqin and cutting her hand to save his life.

It was because he had seen her then that he now felt disappointment. Later, when visiting the Jiang residence again, he saw her beating a maid over a minor issue. Her reputation worsened, and Xie Wei could only lament how the capital’s decadence ruined people. Jiang Xuening was relieved after hearing Xie Wei’s explanation and playfully meowed like a cat as she left, indicating she had forgiven him.

Shen Jie, concerned about Yan Lin’s recent behavior, sought out Jiang Xuening, who told him to pass on a message. Xue Shu happened to see this. She deliberately told Wang Jiu about Xie Wei throwing the books, claiming it was Jiang Xuening’s instigation. The next day, Wang Jiu humiliated Jiang Xuening by making her recite “Chaste Rites. ” Shen Zhiyi defended her, but Wang Jiu used the late emperor’s name to suppress her. Jiang Xuening had to accept the punishment. Shen Zhiyi angrily treated Jiang Xuening’s injuries and stormed off to ask the Empress Dowager to remove Wang Jiu.

Episode 10 Recap

The Empress Dowager arranged for Shen Jie and Xue Shu to meet. Shen Jie, quiet and unwilling, tried to flee. At that moment, Shen Zhiyi burst in to demand Wang Jiu’s removal. Xue Shu subtly implied that Wang Jiu was from the Xue family. Jiang Xuening, with her hands wrapped like pig’s trotters, went to Xie Wei, thinking she was punished because of him. Xie Wei, confused at first, became angry after hearing the whole story.

Wang Jiu had asked Jiang Xuening to write a poem, and Xie Wei conveniently had one for her to use. Jiang Xuening handed Xie Wei’s poem to Wang Jiu, who said it was unrefined. Just then, Xie Wei arrived, stating it was an old playful piece of his. Jiang Xuening quickly apologized and went to stand outside, embarrassing Wang Jiu. Yan’s father discovered stolen supplies in the military camp, which upon closer inspection were traced to the Xingwu Guards.

He decided to report this to the emperor. Wang Jiu requested retirement the day before, and Teacher Zhao was demoted. You Yue once again implied that Jiang Xuening was behind it, while Xue Shu maintained her act of kindness. Xie Wei reported the matter to the emperor and suggested that Jiang’s father take over as Minister.

When the emperor heard that Jiang Xuening was his daughter and Xie Wei was close to her, Xie Wei clarified they were just teacher and student. The emperor agreed. Jiang’s father was surprised by the sudden promotion. Lady Meng wanted to write to Jiang Xuening to find out what was going on, but he stopped her, saying the palace was no ordinary place. Lady Meng was arranging a marriage for Jiang Xuehui and didn’t want Jiang Xuening to disrupt propriety.

In the end, Jiang’s father agreed to write a letter but insisted on keeping it proper. Jiang Xuening received the letter. In her past life, her family was not involved, but in this life, by helping Xie Wei against the Xue family, she inadvertently earned her father a promotion. Perhaps everything could still be redeemed. On his way back to the capital, Yan’s father was ambushed.

Yan Lin rushed to his aid, but the witness Lao Zhao was killed, and Yan’s father was wounded by an arrow. Eunuchs came to search their residences and found a letter in Jiang Xuening’s room accusing her of colluding with traitors—something that didn’t happen in her past life. The emperor ordered the city sealed to root out the traitors. Yan Lin, anxious to save his father, was distraught.

Jiang Xuening was to be taken to the Court of Judicial Review, but she refused to be framed and demanded the eunuch deliver a message to the Empress Dowager. Xie Wei, worried about the lockdown and Yan’s father’s injury, was shocked to hear that Jiang Xuening was in trouble too. Jiang Xuening refused to go down alone and intended to drag everyone with her. Xie Wei and Lü Xian found a doctor for Yan’s father.

Xie Wei realized this wasn’t the Xingwu Guards’ doing but Gong Yicheng’s. Jiang Xuening and others were taken to the Empress Dowager’s palace, where the Dowager implicated the Yan family and even ordered a public flogging. To protect herself, Jiang Xuening threatened them with a hairpin and reasoned the consequences: a minister’s daughter dying without cause in the palace wasn’t something easily explained.

Her eloquence worked, and the Dowager ordered someone from the Ministry of Justice to judge the case, which brought Jiang Xuening some relief—at least the Yan family would be spared. Kneeling for an hour and nearing exhaustion, Jiang Xuening finally saw the people from the Ministry arrive—including Zhang Zhe. She stared at him in shock, and the hairpin finally fell from her hand. Yao Xi’s eyes also lit up at the sight of Zhang Zhe.

He asked questions and noticed Jiang Xuening’s pallor. The Dowager allowed her to stand, and as she rose unsteadily, Zhang Zhe instinctively supported her. Xue Shu brought forward handwriting as evidence, but Zhang Zhe proposed a plan—to match the number of paper sheets, as palace paper was recorded. Jiang Xuening sensed something odd in his words, but Zhang Zhe had his reasoning. He specifically requested the palace maids assist in the room searches.

Upon hearing the news, the emperor also came. Xie Wei instructed the doctor not to tell Yan Lin about his father’s poisoning. Meanwhile, Jiang Xuening took unexpected actions. She hadn’t anticipated that Chen Ying would bring Zhang Zhe into the palace. The Internal Affairs Office confirmed one sheet was missing, and the Empress Dowager asked Jiang Xuening for an explanation.

Episode 11 Recap

Zhang Zhe’s goal just now was to search the palace staff. Now, he only needed to search the one who had just been checked with the paper to determine if Jiang Xuening was the main suspect. Zheng Bao discovered the suspicious young palace maid and immediately found the paper on her, but when the Empress Dowager saw her, she instantly realized it was a plot by Xue Shu to frame Jiang Xuening.

Jiang Xuening quickly realized the maid was illiterate and pleaded with the Emperor for justice. The Emperor nearly resorted to torture, but the Empress Dowager stopped him, clearly wanting to smooth things over. After a thrilling night, everyone was on the way back to the palace. You Yue once again mocked Jiang Xuening, who instead looked toward Xue Shu. The Emperor even sent a special message saying he would seek justice for her.

On the road, seeing Chen Ying and Zhang Zhe leaving the palace, Jiang Xuening hurried forward to express her thanks. As she turned to leave, Zhang Zhe specifically asked about the quarrel between Yao Xi and Jiang Xuening over him and said he would break off the engagement with Yao Xi. Hearing this, Jiang Xuening stood there smiling like a fool. Xie Wei, entering the palace and seeing this, was furious.

Xie Wei asked Jiang Xuening if she had any suspects. Jiang Xuening indeed suspected Xue Shu, but she lacked conclusive evidence. However, the Empress Dowager's reaction revealed a lot. Xie Wei told Jiang Xuening not to act rashly and asked what she was doing with Zhang Zhe earlier. Jiang Xuening replied that she was simply thanking Zhang Zhe for saving her.

Xie Wei realized that Jiang Xuening liked Zhang Zhe and was furious, wishing he could flay her on behalf of Yan Lin. He warned Jiang Xuening that if she ever liked someone, she must hide it deep in her heart—otherwise, someone could exploit her weakness to bring harm. Back at the residence, Xie Wei immediately ordered an investigation into Zhang Zhe. The Empress Dowager scolded Xue Shu mildly, but she didn’t actually disapprove of her actions.

With Jiang Xuening still in the palace, she would have her chance to deal with her. Shen Zhiyi, upon hearing what happened that night, immediately had several outfits made for Jiang Xuening to support her. Shen Zhiyi unintentionally saw that Shen Jie also had a handkerchief identical to Jiang Xuening’s, confirming for Jiang Xuening that Xue Shu had framed her. But all for the position of Empress—whoever wanted it could have it; she didn’t care.

Yan Mu specially thanked Xie Wei for saving his life. Last night he took such a great risk—was it really just because he was Yan Lin’s mentor? Xie Wei simply said that Yan Mu had spent his life in battles and shouldn't be framed by petty men. Looking at the tree planted by the Yan Madam, Yan Mu thought of the young Xue Dingfei, whom he had always protected.

But now, his real nephew stood before him, and Xie Wei could not reveal his true identity. Yan Mu suspected Xie Wei's background and probed repeatedly, eventually understanding that Xie Wei likely had his reasons. Yan Lin also felt Xie Wei was different toward the Yan family. Yan Mu told him to simply be grateful and not overthink it. The Duke of Xue soon sensed that Xie Wei was involved in everything.

Though Xie Wei was just a scholar without real power, he had the Emperor’s trust—and if the Emperor began to doubt him, it would be a different story. Xie Wei had not attended class for several days. Tomorrow, everyone would leave the palace for rest. Shen Zhiyi suggested going to the Imperial Garden to enjoy tea and snacks. There, they encountered Xie Wei playing chess with the Emperor.

Jiang Xuening thought Xie Wei was ill but was surprised to see him playing chess. The Emperor noticed how Xie Wei looked at Jiang Xuening and assumed he liked her. Zheng Bao told Jiang Xuening that the maid who framed her was dead and that the Emperor wished to see her. These past few days, the Duke of Xue had been saying divisive things about Xie Wei to the Emperor. The Ministry of Justice said the maid was likely a rebel planted by Prince Pingnan and suggested awarding Jiang Xuening as comfort—but the Emperor's gaze toward her was far from proper.

Episode 12 Recap

The Emperor asked about Xie Wei and Jiang Xuening. Jiang Xuening, worried Xie Wei might be suspected, quickly feigned innocence, saying Xie Wei treated her differently and even made her learn the zither alone—which was quite unfair. The Emperor laughed, told her not to overthink, and privately thought her childish nature amusing. Jiang Xuening thought her naïveté had helped Xie Wei get by, unaware the Emperor was actually worrying about Xie Wei’s marriage prospects.

Zhang Zhe broke off the engagement with the Yao family. Chen Ying was furious, afraid they’d be implicated. Chen Ying visited Xie Wei and mentioned Zhang Zhe’s background. Xie Wei found out that Zhang Zhe and Lord Gu were close, not ordinary friends, and told Chen Ying to keep him updated on any news about Zhang Zhe. That morning, the Emperor sent many gifts to the Jiang family, finally learning of Jiang Xuening’s grievances.

Her father was anxious, while Lady Meng scolded her for always stirring trouble and being reckless. Jiang Xuening quickly argued with her again. Afterward, Jiang Xuehui comforted Lady Meng, saying she knew the scolding came from love. Besides, no one really knew what happened in the palace, and it wasn’t necessarily Jiang Xuening’s fault. Lady Meng then worried about Jiang Xuehui’s marriage—she should have found a good match, but now might be affected by Jiang Xuening.

Jiang Xuehui simply said fate is in heaven’s hands and that suffering could be a blessing. Late at night, Jiang Xuening visited her father, saying the palace matter was indeed a setup by the Empress Dowager to implicate the Yan family but had been resolved. Jiang Xuening didn’t know Yan Mu had been injured, though everyone was worried about the Yan family.

Yan Lin and Jiang Xuening were childhood friends; Jiang Boyou liked Yan Lin and had thought they would eventually marry. But now it seemed unlikely, and he feared Jiang Xuening would be heartbroken. Jiang Xuening said she only saw Yan Lin as a friend and asked her father to help the Yan family if they were in trouble. The Duke of Xue received letters showing correspondence between Prince Pingnan and the Yan family and immediately presented them to the Emperor.

The Emperor summoned Xie Wei and ordered the Yan family confined for investigation and to quickly locate the missing part of the letter. When the Xue family came to search, Yan Lin blocked them by himself. Jiang Xuening heard about the letter from Zhou Yinzhi and asked if he had any ideas. She reminded him that since he had already pledged loyalty to her, he should not waver.

Zhou Yinzhi said even if not him, someone else would report it, so if anything further was found about the Yan family, he would report it to the Xue family as well. Jiang Xuening needed money and arranged to meet You Fangyin. Xie Wei decided to meet Zhang Zhe and, upon hearing Jiang Xuening had gone to see Zhou Yinzhi, specifically told his men not to stop her if she came to see him.

You Fangyin gave Jiang Xuening 2,500 taels and revealed that Lü Xian and Xie Wei were working together. Jiang Xuening said they would split it fifty-fifty. You Fangyin thought she was being dismissed and panicked, but Jiang Xuening reassured her that she just wanted her to live well. This time, the problem Jiang Xuening faced couldn’t be solved with a mere thousand or two; she asked You Fangyin to help with another business deal.

The Zhang family canceled the engagement, and Yao Xi was harshly scolded by her father and deeply saddened. Zhang Zhe disliked drinking with colleagues and used an excuse to go out, where he coincidentally saw Jiang Xuening waiting for a carriage downstairs. In the past life, on a similar rainy day, Jiang Xuening had stepped on his robe to keep him from leaving. Zhang Zhe had torn it off and told her to behave.

The two gazed at each other from afar, and Xie Wei, watching, was very displeased. Chen Ying brought Jiang Xuening to see Xie Wei, but before he could speak, Chen Ying rejected his request. Xie Wei wasn’t angry—in fact, he admired him more.

Episode 13 Recap

Salt merchant Ren Weizhi was evicted from an inn for owing money and ended up sleeping on the street. Everyone said he was a fraud, but only You Fangyin stood up for him and paid his debts. You Yue searched You Fangyin’s room and found a few hundred taels, thinking she had stolen from the family. Learning she had gone to an inn, she maliciously planned to punish her.

Ren Weizhi thanked You Fangyin, revealing that he had developed a method for reusing abandoned wells, called the bamboo well. You Fangyin, entrusted by Jiang Xuening, wanted to work with him. However, Jiang Xuening demanded 70% of future profits. Ren Weizhi was shocked—this was harsh. You Fangyin had the same reaction but understood that in desperate times, Jiang Xuening had to use extraordinary means. Since she took the risk, Ren Weizhi should compromise.

You Fangyin convinced Ren Weizhi but ran into You Yue on the way out. You Yue hit both You Fangyin and Ren Weizhi and dragged You Fangyin back home, accusing her of trying to elope. Jiang Xuening, hearing this, was very worried. Knowing You Yue’s troublemaking nature, she feared what You Fangyin might suffer.

Jiang Xuening decided to find a permanent solution and asked Tang’er to find the two-tael gold hairpin her father had gifted her two years ago—it would be used to save You Fangyin. The next day, Jiang Xuening brought the gift to You Yue, asking her not to spread rumors. You Yue accepted the gift but nosily investigated and learned that Jiang Xuening was running a business behind the family’s back. She then planned to blackmail Jiang Xuening for capital.

You Yue dragged You Fangyin to the inn, intending to ruin her reputation by locking her in Ren Weizhi’s room. But Jiang Xuening appeared just in time and slapped herself in front of You Fangyin. You Fangyin, thinking You Yue hit Jiang Xuening, went mad and attacked her with a chair. Jiang Xuening did not stop her. She wanted You Fangyin to think seriously about her life. You Yue was chased into the main hall by You Fangyin.

Jiang Xuening seized the moment to escalate the matter, claiming the concubine-born daughter You Fangyin had hit the legitimate daughter You Yue and called for officials. You Yue didn’t want things to go public, but the Xingwu Guards arrived—led by Zhou Yinzhi. Jiang Xuening signaled You Fangyin to trust her, and both You Yue and You Fangyin were taken to jail. You Fangyin was taken to a different cell, where Jiang Xuening and Zhou Yinzhi awaited.

Jiang Xuening asked if You Fangyin would be willing to shed her identity as a concubine’s daughter and live here instead. You Fangyin eagerly agreed. Jiang Xuening told her to rest assured—she would handle the rest. Jiang Xuening warned Zhou Yinzhi not to release anyone if the Qingyuan Count’s family came to rescue her.

As expected, You’s father came with 13,000 taels to bribe Zhou Yinzhi, who agreed to release You Yue, knowing You’s father didn’t care whether You Fangyin lived or died. Xie Wei waited all day for Jiang Xuening but didn’t see her, so he sent people to investigate what she had been doing. Zhou Yinzhi kept 3,000 taels and sent 10,000 to Jiang Xuening, who split half with him and asked him to give the rest to You Fangyin.

Upon returning home, You Yue was beaten by her father. The Qingyuan Count’s family was barely maintaining its reputation, and he forbade You Yue from stepping out of her room. Jiang Xuening was taken away by Xie Wei after leaving Zhou Yinzhi’s place. She scolded him for not keeping her informed, and Xie Wei had no rebuttal. Back at home, Jiang Xuening took out the handkerchief—an identical pattern used exclusively by the Jiang family.

The one Shen Jie had picked up clearly belonged to Jiang Xuehui. Jiang Xuehui roughly knew who had her lost handkerchief. She had always given in to Jiang Xuening, making Jiang Xuening feel guilty. Jiang Xuening decided to write Shen Jie a letter and ask to meet. Whether she came or not was up to her. After thinking it over, Jiang Xuehui still chose to go. Lü Xian went to teach You Fangyin how to run a business, but when he learned she had given all 1,000 taels to Ren Weizhi, he quickly said they needed to recover the money.

Episode 14 Recap

Jiang Xuening plopped down beside Zhang Zhe, making him feel a bit uneasy; even the tips of his ears turned red. Their scene together was witnessed by Xue Shu and Yao Xi. Yao Xi scolded Jiang Xuening harshly and tearfully questioned Zhang Zhe about his broken engagement. Zhang Zhe defended Jiang Xuening, stating that he had never wanted to marry Yao Xi and was only engaged to her due to pressure from the Yao family.

He told Jiang Xuening to take the jade piece and leave with him. Jiang Xuening was surprised to hear that he had broken off the engagement with the Yao family. Zhang Zhe expressed his distaste for the petty affairs of the capital and said that whatever had happened with Yao Xi had nothing to do with Jiang Xuening—she shouldn’t concern herself with it. Jiang Xuening was lost in thought—this life, she was not the empress, just a good person.

Could she possibly be a match for him? Ren Weizhi had returned to Shu yesterday, claiming to dig wells in his hometown. Lü Xian was furious that he didn’t get the money back and could only send someone to Shu to keep an eye on him. Comparatively, Lü Xian was more eager to uncover the secret business dealings Jiang Xuening knew of, but You Fangyin refused to betray her no matter what.

Jiang Xuening, on her day off, returned to the palace and brought a shadow puppet gift for Shen Zhiyi, hoping Shen Zhiyi would let her leave the palace. Shen Zhiyi firmly disagreed and also refused to excuse Jiang Xuening from her music lessons, so Jiang Xuening suggested summoning Jiang Xuehui to the palace. Jiang Xuening gave the gifts bestowed by Shen Zhiyi to Zhou Baoying and others, much to the displeasure of Xue Shu and Yao Xi.

The Empress Dowager went to great lengths to matchmake Shen Jie and Xue Shu. Knowing he disliked the Empress Dowager’s meddling, Xue Shu responded with words of shared sentiment. From afar, Shen Jie’s eyes lit up upon seeing Jiang Xuehui enter the palace, while Xue Shu clenched her fists even tighter.

Jiang Xuening explained that she arranged for Jiang Xuehui to enter the palace because Xue Shu mistook Shen Jie’s beloved for her and used tactics meant for Jiang Xuehui on her instead. So, she brought Jiang Xuehui in to take her place. Jiang Xuehui didn’t get angry—she knew Jiang Xuening only had a sharp tongue. Yan Lin still had to send out invitations for his coming-of-age ceremony.

Though few would dare attend given the current climate, he insisted on sending them. His Majesty still ordered the Ministry of Rites to conduct the ceremony for Yan Lin and assigned the rebel case to Zhang Zhe. Xue Shu tried to target Jiang Xuehui during class, but didn’t expect Jiang Xuehui’s musical talent to be so outstanding—it stunned everyone present. Xie Wei specifically called on Jiang Xuening to learn more from her.

After class, Xie Wei took Jiang Xuening for a private lesson. Yao Xi then went to provoke Jiang Xuehui, who finally lost her temper and scolded her back. Jiang Xuening played the zither absentmindedly. Xie Wei offered her some pastries and tea. In the box were peach slice cakes, which he said were from the imperial kitchen.

Jiang Xuening didn’t actually like pastries but remembered the peach slice cakes Xie Wei gave her on the road to the capital in the past. Xie Wei talked about court affairs and hoped there would be no trouble at Yan Lin’s ceremony. Jiang Xuehui later found Xie Wei to complain about slapping back at Xue Shu. Xie Wei didn’t look pleased and subtly asked whether she’d eaten.

The box in his hand contained the peach slice cakes Jiang Xuening liked—not too sweet. Jiang Xuening also noticed that only Xie Wei called her “Second Miss Ning,” because “Ning” belonged solely to her. Yao Xi accidentally found Jiang Xuening’s sachet and overheard Xue Shu conspiring with the Empress Dowager to plant the sachet by the roadside.

When Xue Shu picked it up and sought to make trouble for Jiang Xuening, Zhou Baoying told her it was Yao Xi who found it. So, Xue Shu took the sachet to Jiang Xuening, claiming she hadn’t targeted her intentionally and even offered to help deal with Yao Xi. Jiang Xuening refused—she disliked using others and didn’t want to associate with Xue Shu.

Episode 15 Recap

Zhang Zhe had made good progress investigating the rebel party. He believed the Yan family was not directly involved but also not entirely innocent, so he decided to go to Tongzhou to verify. But the emperor didn’t consider the matter urgent. As Jiang Xuening ate peach slice cakes, Zhou Baoying burst in and joined her, delighted by the taste and quickly ran off with the box, treating the cakes like treasure.

While secretly eating them, Zhou Baoying was caught by Xie Wei. Upon learning Jiang Xuening gave them to her, his expression darkened. Zhou Baoying politely offered him some, but he took the entire box. In class, Xie Wei was clearly in a bad mood and even declared he would no longer make peach slice cakes.

Gu Chunfang, Zhang Zhe’s teacher, believed the Yan family’s case had many suspicious points and insisted the person colluding with Prince Pingnan must be found—Zhang Zhe thought of Xie Wei. The next morning, the steward made many desserts, hoping to win favor from Jiang Xuening on Xie Wei’s behalf. Yan Mu brought Yan Lin to see Xie Wei—both wanted Xie Wei to be the patron of the coming-of-age ceremony.

The Yan family, long on the battlefield and lacking male members, saw Xie Wei as the best choice. Xie Wei was stunned by Yan Mu’s words. Yan Lin, thinking he was reluctant, quickly said it was fine, but Xie Wei promptly agreed. He told Yan Lin that Zhou Yinzhi had been arranged by Jiang Xuening and also probed Yan Lin’s attitude—he still liked Jiang Xuening and said whoever Jiang Xuening liked must be far better than him.

Yan Lin asked Xie Wei to deliver the invitation; even if she didn’t come, it didn’t matter. Zhou Baoying, angry that Xie Wei took the peach slice cakes, cursed him behind his back. Jiang Xuening then realized Xie Wei was mad because of the peach slice cakes. As Xie Wei delivered the invitation to Yan Lin’s ceremony, Jiang Xuening decided to attend regardless—she had to prepare early that day.

The Empress Dowager didn’t want Shen Zhiyi to attend the ceremony, but since Shen Zhiyi and Yan Lin were friends, she wanted to go. Jiang Xuening helped her devise a plan. Xue Shu asked the Empress Dowager to attend the ceremony too, so Shen Zhiyi was allowed to go. Two months earlier, Jiang Xuening had already prepared a gift for Yan Lin’s coming-of-age ceremony. Yan Lin once said he wanted a razor-sharp, sheathless sword for battle—and she made it happen.

On the day of the ceremony, Shen Jie naturally attended, and his eyes lit up at the sight of Jiang Xuehui. Yan Mu specially asked Xie Wei to offer incense to the ancestors in the ancestral hall. There was a mutual understanding between the two, revealing unspoken secrets. Yan Mu said Madam Yan once cried all day and night looking for her son—whatever happened, she just hoped he would live well.

Xie Wei knelt and kowtowed three times, unable to hold back his tears. The time was almost up, and not many guests had arrived. As Yan Lin was about to go inside, Jiang Xuening and Shen Zhiyi arrived with their gifts—he was overjoyed. Everyone inside joyfully celebrated Yan Lin’s birthday, except for Xue Ye, who occasionally made discordant remarks. Yan Lin loved the sword Jiang Xuening gave him.

During the toast, Xue Ye suddenly smashed his cup, claiming the emperor had forbidden the Xue family from privately owning weapons and summoned the Xingwu Guards to confiscate his sword. Yan Lin restrained himself several times, but when Jiang Xuening was slapped by Xue Ye, he couldn’t hold back and kicked him to the ground. Xue Ye, unwilling to concede, ordered the Xingwu Guards to kill them.

Yan Mu and Xie Wei rushed in upon hearing the commotion, and Jiang Xuening tried to prevent further escalation that might brand them as rebels. Xue Shu also held Xue Ye back, and Yan Lin mocked him by mentioning Xue Dingfei. Yan Mu and Xie Wei’s arrival finally brought the situation under control. Then Chen Ying and Zhang Zhe also arrived, and from that moment, Jiang Xuening’s eyes never left Zhang Zhe.

Episode 16 Recap

In her previous life, Jiang Xuening didn’t attend Yan Lin’s coming-of-age ceremony and didn’t know what happened. Now, with the matter regarding Xue Ye resolved, she hoped everything would be fine. Xie Wei officiated the ceremony like an older brother to Yan Lin—still noble, yet more emotional. But storm clouds loomed—Duke Xue was on his way to the Yan residence.

Before the ceremony could finish, he surrounded the place, accusing the Yan family of colluding with rebels and ordered to arrest them, killing any who resisted. Jiang Xuening looked to the sky—was the previous life’s tragedy about to repeat? Yan Lin could no longer sit still, but Xie Wei held him back, calmly continuing the ceremony. Jiang Xuening realized that with everything Xie Wei had done, surely something had changed. If they remained calm, a turnaround would come.

She pointed out that the decree for Yan Lin’s ceremony also came from His Majesty—there had to be an order of precedence. Shen Zhiyi and Shen Jie echoed the point. Duke Xue, unable to press further, agreed to let them finish the ceremony. Xie Wei gave Yan Lin the courtesy name “Hui. ” Calm even in the face of catastrophe, Chen Ying was deeply impressed.

Today, the Empress Dowager had forced the emperor to issue a decree, sending Duke Xue to arrest the Yan family. The emperor trusted that with Xie Wei officiating, the ceremony would not descend into chaos. In the struggle between rivals, he could reap the benefits—thus he gave the order. Once the ceremony ended, Duke Xue moved to arrest them. Xie Wei questioned why there had been no prior notice of rebellion.

Zhang Zhe also spoke up, saying Duke Xue had not followed protocol in reading the decree before arresting people. Jiang Xuening and Shen Zhiyi stepped forward too. Forced to read the decree, Duke Xue did so, and Zhang Zhe pointed out that the decree lacked the Hanlin Academy’s seal, asking him to open and verify. Enraged, Duke Xue threatened to kill him, but Zhang Zhe remained upright and righteous.

When Duke Xue drew his sword, Yan Mu pushed Zhang Zhe aside and stood before the blade—he would allow no harm to anyone present. To save his father, Yan Lin knocked down the decree. Xie Wei, Zhang Zhe, Shen Jie, and Shen Zhiyi all pressured Duke Xue to return to the palace for the proper seal, and he had no choice but to leave temporarily.

Xie Wei told Yan Mu and Yan Lin to go rest—the storm was yet to come. No one could leave the estate, so Yan Mu instructed everyone to rest. Duke Xue slapped Xue Ye in fury before returning to the palace to affix the seal. Xie Wei thanked Zhang Zhe for today, but Zhang Zhe asked why he defended the Yan family—perhaps he had another reason. Jiang Xuening passed by and left with Xie Wei.

She believed he would find a way to save the Xue family. Even if Xie Wei claimed not to be a good person, Jiang Xuening believed that whatever he wanted to do, he could make it happen. Trouble had indeed broken out in Tongzhou. The soldiers, hearing of the Yan family’s situation, clamored to enter the capital and see the emperor.

Lü Xian used the Yan family seal to pacify the army, telling them the Tongzhou camp must stay calm for the Yan family to remain safe. The one stirring the army was someone from Prince Pingnan’s faction—this was what Xie Wei had prepared for. Gong Yicheng’s plans were disrupted by Lü Xian, who dealt with them one by one using knife and zither. Duke Xue, still absent, prompted Yan Mu to resume the banquet.

But Duke Xue then returned with the imperial decree bearing the seal. Regardless of what was happening at the Tongzhou camp, the Yan family had taken action—it was undeniable. So, Yan Mu decided to take Yan Lin and go.

Episode 17 Recap

Yan Lin and his father had to visit Duke Xue to prove their innocence. Before leaving, the father and son especially thanked everyone who had attended the coming-of-age ceremony. Yan Lin looked at Jiang Xuening, knowing he wouldn’t be able to fulfill many of the promises he made to her. Yan’s father asked Xie Wei to play a tune as a parting gift. Amid the melancholy sound of the qin, Yan Lin handed Jiang Xuening a pouch and left.

When she opened it, it contained a bag of shelled pine nuts. As the Yan family was investigated, Xie Wei hid in the shadows. In fact, Yan’s father had already secretly handed the Yan family’s seal to Xie Wei, entrusting their family to him. Jiang Xuening asked Xie Wei what would happen next.

He told her to stay out of it and advised her to restrain her sharpness upon returning to the palace, so as not to draw the Empress Dowager’s disapproval. The Xue family had set this trap, but they didn’t realize they were already deeply entangled in it. Jiang’s father was surprised to hear how Yan Lin’s ceremony ended, while Lady Meng was relieved, believing it was right not to let him attend.

She reasoned that court affairs were unpredictable, and Jiang Xuening and Jiang Xuehui attending with Shen Zhiyi didn’t represent the Jiang family’s stance. But Jiang’s father felt distressed and guilty for letting down Yan’s father’s friendship. Lady Meng said some unpleasant truths — their Jiang family, unlike powerful clans, lacked support. While Jiang’s father had secretly helped the family in the past, if someone with an agenda dug it up later, it could be used against them.

Although Jiang’s father claimed he wasn’t afraid, if that were true, Lady Meng wouldn’t have been able to stop him today. She knew he understood that all too well. The investigation of the Yan family yielded no results, which angered the Emperor. Holding the impeachment memorials against Duke Xue from court officials, he threatened the duke to find evidence quickly but forbade the use of torture.

As soon as Duke Xue left, Xie Wei arrived and deliberately steered the conversation to the Yan family’s seal, stirring the Emperor’s suspicions. The Emperor immediately sent Xie Wei to the prison to uncover whether the Xue family had ulterior motives. Shen Lang knelt before the Empress Dowager to plead for the Yan family, while Xue Shu stepped in to persuade him. However, Shen Lang grew increasingly disgusted with her due to her actions the previous day.

The Empress Dowager was shocked to hear that Consort Qin was pregnant. The Emperor had been in poor health for years and had no offspring, so if she bore a child, it would surely become the Crown Prince. But the Empress Dowager and Consort Qin had never gotten along, which stirred murderous intent in her. Xue Shu proposed a scheme. At the prison, Zhou Yinzhi had already replaced the inmates with their own men.

Xie Wei asked Yan’s father whether he was willing to sacrifice everything and be reborn from ruin — to hand the Yan family army over to the Emperor. The Xue family, in their urgency, would surely make mistakes. Xie Wei promised to protect the Tongzhou army. Yan’s father agreed and personally wrote a statement. Jiang Xuening was distracted, worried about Yan Lin and the Yan family.

Yao Xi, in order to mock Zhang Zhe, sneered at Jiang Xuening, who retaliated verbally. Shen Zhiyi also defended Jiang Xuening. The Empress Dowager summoned everyone. On the way, Jiang Xuening and Jiang Xuehui sensed something was off and warned each other to stay alert. At the banquet, Consort Qin mentioned selecting a bride for Shen Lang, but the Empress Dowager said nothing. Instead, she had Jiang Xuening accompany Consort Qin to pick flowers.

Jiang Xuening knew something was wrong and pulled Xue Shu along. Xue Shu couldn’t refuse and insisted that the companions go too, but the Empress Dowager stopped Shen Zhiyi. Jiang Xuening understood the plan must involve Consort Qin, so she faked a stomach ache. Yao Xi seized the chance to gossip before Consort Qin.

Thinking the danger was over with Jiang Xuening gone, they didn’t expect a group of rats to suddenly dart out and scare Consort Qin and Yao Xi. Xue Shu, waiting for an opportunity, seized the moment to steal the scented pouch given to Consort Qin and accused Yao Xi of pushing her. Consort Qin clutched her belly, saying she felt unwell.

Jiang Xuehui stopped her from moving, saying she had some medical knowledge and that a diagnosis from an imperial physician was needed before she moved. Thus, word of Consort Qin’s pregnancy reached the Emperor, enraging the Empress Dowager, who grew even more hateful toward Jiang Xuening and Jiang Xuehui. Jiang Xuehui had been silent, but now made a stunning impression. Jiang Xuening realized she must have done it for Shen Lang and reminded her to be careful.

Jiang Xuening believed that if Consort Qin’s pregnancy could be preserved and the child was a boy, everything from now on would be turned upside down compared to the previous life — and there would still be hope for the Yan family. Xie Wei planned to hand over the seal if it meant the Yan family’s safety. The Emperor summoned Xie Wei to the palace to discuss a general amnesty. Xie Wei took the chance to hand over the seal, but Zhang Zhe didn’t believe he had obtained it through persuasion.

Episode 18 Recap

Xie Wei handed over the Yan family seal, and the Emperor was quite pleased. He asked how Yan Lin should be punished. Xie Wei replied that Yan Lin had indeed defied the imperial decree and couldn’t be let off. If the Yan family truly had rebellious intentions, they would be a grave threat. Therefore, Xie Wei advised exiling the father and son to Huangzhou, a remote place. The Emperor gladly agreed.

Zhang Zhe, however, believed Xie Wei had ulterior motives and wanted to report this to the Emperor, but Gu Chunfang stopped him, saying this matter couldn’t be rushed. The Emperor decreed that Yao Xi be banished from the palace. Xue Shu took the opportunity to mock Jiang Xuening. Even though Jiang Xuening knew Xue Shu was behind it, she was fearless. Jiang Xuening helped Yao Xi discipline the servants, but Yao Xi was ungrateful and even cursed Yan Lin.

Jiang Xuening couldn’t take it anymore and advised her to reflect on how she had ended up like this. Yao Xi, unwilling to accept it, ran to question Xue Shu for harming her. Xue Shu also looked down on her. Yao Xi knew many things but didn’t understand what should or shouldn’t be said. She ground her teeth in frustration. Jiang Xuening wanted to leave the palace for a few days. Shen Zhiyi immediately arranged a rest break.

Jiang Xuening and Jiang Xuehui returned home, where Lady Meng praised Jiang Xuehui endlessly and mentioned all the recent marriage proposals. Jiang Xuehui said she didn’t want to marry yet. Lady Meng completely ignored Jiang Xuening, who didn’t mind and just walked silently. Zhang Zhe suddenly came to see Jiang Xuening. At the marquis’ residence the other day, he noticed Jiang Xuening and Xie Wei were quite close and that they had traveled to the capital together four years ago.

Jiang Xuening explained that it was because her father was on good terms with Xie Wei. Zhang Zhe told her that the exile of the Yan father and son was Xie Wei’s idea and advised her to stay away from him — it’s dangerous to conspire with a tiger. Xie Wei planned to act today. He had been in poor health lately. Lü Xian, hearing that the bamboo well had been successfully developed, was even more impressed by Jiang Xuening.

Jiang Xuening repeatedly sought confirmation that the Yan family had indeed been exiled, feeling more anxious than ever. She began to suspect that their exile in the previous life had also been orchestrated by Xie Wei. Her suspicions toward him grew rapidly. Jiang Xuening was determined to change the outcome — how could Xie Wei lie to her? On a snowy night, she stormed out to confront him. Meanwhile, Xie Wei invited Gong Yicheng for tea.

Years ago, Prince Pingnan had spared Xie Wei’s life and had been using that to threaten him ever since. Xie Wei’s reason for coming to the capital was to destroy the entire Xue family — that had never changed. But if Tongzhou rebelled, how many would die? Gong Yicheng’s arrogant words triggered Xie Wei’s illness. He swiftly drew his sword and killed him.

On that snowy night, Xie Wei completely lost his sanity — whatever others could do, he could too. Gong Yicheng was dead, and Jiang Xuening witnessed Xie Wei commit the murder. Xie Wei turned to see her horrified face. Drawing his sword, he approached step by step. Jiang Xuening backed away in fear, but he suddenly grabbed her by the throat. She begged him to let go. In the end, reason overcame madness, and Xie Wei pushed her away.

His illness flared, and he took a dangerously toxic medicine called Jinshisan. Yan Lin was still exiled. Xie Wei was still that merciless killer. Jiang Xuening had no choice but to seek help from Zhang Zhe — why had everything returned to square one? Hearing this, Zhang Zhe seemed moved and promised to try to rescue the Yan family. Xie Wei went to the Jiang residence, but Jiang Xuening wasn’t there, so he went to the prison.

Jiang Xuening visited You Fangyin, feeling guilty that she hadn’t changed anything, but You Fangyin was grateful for all Jiang Xuening had done. Xie Wei met Jiang Xuening. She questioned him about the Yan family. Xie Wei asked her to return to his residence with him. Jiang Xuening wasn’t interested in what had happened the previous night and wouldn’t tell anyone. Xie Wei told her that only through destruction could the Yan family be saved.

Jiang Xuening also guessed at the connection between Xie Wei and the Yan family. Xie Wei was relieved — even though she knew he was lying, she still chose to believe him. Xie Wei hoped that the next time it snowed, Jiang Xuening would stay away from him — he didn’t want to do anything he would regret. Jiang Xuening asked her father to sell what Yan Lin had given her and use it to provide for their journey. Her father readily agreed. Though he had concerns, he would still do what he could.

Episode 19 Recap

Xie Wei had not yet fully recovered, but due to many pressing affairs, he had to press on. The Ministry of Justice discovered Gong Yicheng’s corpse, staged as a conflict over unevenly split loot, and left behind maps of several of their strongholds in the capital. Zhang Zhe, however, was deeply suspicious, feeling something was amiss. This was the burial site of the 300 wronged children from four years ago.

In the early years, people came to pay respects, but now it was overgrown with weeds, heightening Zhang Zhe’s doubts. Xie Wei arranged everything and entered the palace, advising His Majesty to commend Zhang Zhe and remarking that even in death, Gong Yicheng could still be of use—though this plan was risky. If they falsely claimed Gong Yicheng was alive and being tortured, Prince Pingnan's men would surely send someone.

Xie Wei even suggested planting someone in prison to impersonate one of Prince Pingnan’s strategists—Du Junshan—to leave the capital with the enemy and discover more strongholds. But infiltrating the enemy like this was extremely dangerous. Gu Chunfang thought Xie Wei should take on the role, but due to Xie Wei's high profile, he instead recommended Zhang Zhe. Zhang Zhe didn’t mind; after all, uncovering the truth was worthwhile. But why did Xie Wei propose this plan?

Xie Wei originally intended to use this opportunity to destroy the enemy strongholds and kill their members, but now could only proceed cautiously. Lü Xian, on the other hand, was quite anxious—it wasn’t like Xie Wei to leave such a variable unaddressed. Xie Wei discovered that Huang Qian, a guard of Prince Pingnan, had entered the capital—he was one of Xie Wei’s plants.

It appeared he had brought another person along, which solved the problem of how to leak the news about Gong Yicheng’s imprisonment—someone had walked right into their trap. The person in question was “Xue Dingfei. ” But Xue Dingfei was lecherous, addicted to gambling, and shallow, and after being caught by Xie Wei, he was terrified. In truth, he hadn’t wanted to come to the capital at all.

Prince Pingnan feared Xie Wei might defect, so he sent Xue Dingfei to expose him. However, Xue Dingfei was Xie Wei’s double—if Xie Wei died, he wouldn’t survive long either. After all, there could only be one Xue Dingfei. He feigned loyalty toward Xie Wei and mentioned that Prince Pingnan had given him a letter capable of destroying the Yan family, but he had lost it.

Zhou Yinzhi came to Jiang Xuening, saying he had found a suspicious man claiming to be from Gong Yicheng’s side, and that he had a letter that could destroy the Yan family. Jiang Xuening rushed to meet the man, who turned out to be just a low-level thug. Xue Dingfei also confessed to Xie Wei that the letter had been taken by one of Gong Yicheng’s subordinates, begging Xie Wei to spare his life.

Jiang Xuening had the man write a letter and ordered someone to send it to Baiguo Temple, warning them not to alert the enemy. Before leaving, she reminded Zhou Yinzhi that the letter must not be reported to the Xue family. Zhou Yinzhi took the letter to Baiguo Temple, but it turned out to be a trap. Unable to contact Gong Yicheng, the men there decided to extort money.

Jiang Xuening had no choice but to instruct her maid to sell all the valuables in her room. The zither ended up in Lü Xian’s hands. Upon hearing of this, Xie Wei sensed something serious had happened to Jiang Xuening and immediately sent Lü Xian to ask You Fangyin for information. You Fangyin refused to let Lü Xian see their account books, but upon learning something might have happened to Jiang Xuening, she became visibly flustered.

The Jiang family had also begun selling off valuables—gifts Yan Lin had given to Jiang Xuening over the years. Her father found it a pity; if so many things hadn’t happened, Jiang Xuening and Yan Lin might have married already. Jiang Xuening managed to raise 50,000 taels and gave it to Zhou Yinzhi to retrieve the letter, along with a reward for his efforts. Zhou Yinzhi traded the money for the letter but didn’t act against the group.

However, Xie Wei’s men soon took them away. Xie Wei realized that Jiang Xuening had raised the funds to buy the letter—the silver notes were marked with a turtle symbol, the same one she had drawn in his book. Xie Wei immediately understood—Jiang Xuening had already calculated their involvement, using them to eliminate the threat. Jiang Xuening got the letter.

Father Yan, trying to obtain Xue Dingfei’s whereabouts, had filled it with evasive rhetoric, explaining why the rebels thought they had the Yan family in their grip. But Jiang Xuening remembered the unruly, uncultured “Xue Dingfei” she had met last year and wondered if the Yan family might come to regret this. Knowing Xie Wei had questions, Jiang Xuening went to see him early the next morning. But he was deeply worried about her safety and erupted in anger.

Jiang Xuening quickly apologized, reminding him they had agreed to share information. She hoped Xie Wei would keep her informed as well. He agreed and gave her 50,000 taels in exchange for the letter. Jiang Xuening took the silver notes and left. Lü Xian thought Xie Wei’s feelings for Jiang Xuening were still unclear, but that one day they would be together. Jiang Xuening once again pondered Xie Wei’s connection to the Xue family. With the letter in hand, Xie Wei was shaken, reminded of the day that completely changed his life.

Episode 20 Recap

When Xie Wei entered the palace, His Majesty was choosing tiger-head shoes for his son, triggering Xie Wei’s memories. Back when he and His Majesty were trapped, it was Xie Wei who brought the shoes to encourage him. His Majesty no longer remembered and instead started worrying about Xie Wei’s marriage prospects. As for the matter in Tongzhou, Xie Wei had already set the trap but needed several imperial edicts to complete the ruse.

According to plan, Zhang Zhe was arrested. His mother tearfully watched him leave. Notices were posted on the streets about the reward for capturing Gong Yicheng and the discovery of court strongholds. Huang Qian panicked, but Xue Dingfei wanted to return to Jinling. Huang Qian insisted on staying to extract Gong Yicheng and support Feng Mingyu. Prince Pingnan had already sent him with explosives to seize Tongzhou’s pass. Xue Dingfei told Xie Wei this news.

Xie Wei was worried—Feng Mingyu was no ordinary man. Zhang Zhe would struggle to impersonate Du Junshan in front of him. Xie Wei had no choice but to risk revealing some details about Du Junshan to Zhang Zhe. This was like drinking poison to quench thirst—even if Zhang Zhe deceived Feng Mingyu, once back in the capital, Xie Wei would face interrogation.

If all else failed, he might have to use Feng Mingyu to kill Zhang Zhe and bury everyone in Tongzhou. Lü Xian was shocked. With so many explosives, no one would survive. Xie Wei even considered killing Duke Xue as well—but after all, he was Xie Wei’s father. Zhou Yinzhi sent word that Yan Lin would be exiled that night. Jiang Xuening hurriedly asked to meet him. Yan Lin was badly injured, and Jiang Xuening was heartbroken.

His wounds had not healed, and it was unclear how much suffering awaited him in Huangzhou. Yan Lin pretended it was nothing, claiming his injuries only looked frightening. During this time, he had come to understand many things, yet there were still many he couldn’t figure out. He treated Jiang Xuening well, and she treated him the same—but why didn’t she love him?

Jiang Xuening said she had dreamed of becoming empress and had a huge argument with Yan Lin in the dream. She did become empress, and when Yan Lin returned, he imprisoned her and treated her cruelly. Yan Lin smiled and asked who she wanted to marry—was it Lord Zhang Zhe from the Ministry of Justice? He had seen the way she looked at Zhang Zhe—it was the same way he had looked at her. Jiang Xuening began to cry.

Yan Lin smiled again and urged her to get married soon. Jiang Xuening prepared silver notes for Yan Lin and some bribes for the journey. She told him to stay alive because only then would there be hope. But Yan Lin refused to take her money. The Yan family once held solid standing in court—it wasn’t beyond redemption. As Yan Lin was led away, Zhou Yinzhi quickly took Jiang Xuening away. She looked back at Yan Lin reluctantly.

He had promised to return safely—he must keep that promise. With so many guards outside, Jiang Xuening had to hide temporarily. That night, the Yan father and son were escorted out of the capital. At the city gate, they heard Xie Wei playing the zither. The two exchanged a glance, deeply moved. Yan Lin said he would definitely return safely. Jiang Xuening had not left yet when she heard a sound.

Zhou Yinzhi said it was the signal of a prison break and urged her to hide in an empty cell and not come out no matter what happened. Some prisoners tried to escape in the chaos but were killed on Zhou Yinzhi’s orders. The Xingwu Guards clashed with the inmates. Jiang Xuening ran around in panic and bumped into Zhang Zhe. He grabbed her hand and led her to safety.

He told her that the rebels had come to break into the prison and that to protect her, she had to change clothes. Zhang Zhe even helped tie up her hair. Despite the danger, Jiang Xuening was happy. Duke Xue received word and rushed over, ordering the rebels to be executed on sight. Zhou Yinzhi had already lost control.

Zhang Zhe revealed himself and told the rebels they had fallen into a court trap and that he was one of Prince Pingnan’s men. Faced with the night’s situation, Zhou Yinzhi took a gamble and won Duke Xue’s approval. Zhang Zhe and Huang Qian discussed Du Junshan’s identity. Jiang Xuening, standing by, dared not speak a word, carefully analyzing Zhang Zhe’s words. Xie Wei and Zhang Zhe had already formed a judgment to gain Huang Qian’s trust.

Zhang Zhe was surprised at how much Xie Wei knew about the rebels, but Xie Wei warned him to stay quiet. After the prison quieted down, Zhou Yinzhi searched everywhere for Jiang Xuening and found her cloak in Zhang Zhe’s cell. Zhang Zhe took Huang Qian to the city gate. Huang Qian, not trusting him, seized Jiang Xuening as a hostage. Zhou Yinzhi told Xie Wei about Jiang Xuening being taken, and Xie Wei warned him not to reveal that she had been to the prison.

Episode 21 Recap

Xie Wei warned Zhou Yinzhi that no one must know about Jiang Xuening, or it would cost him his life. Zhou Yinzhi felt wronged because Duke Xue had already begun to suspect him. He wanted to use Jiang Xuening to threaten Xie Wei into cleaning up the aftermath of tonight's events. Xie Wei agreed, as long as he remained loyal to Jiang Xuening. Jiang Xuening was already in danger.

If he couldn’t stop them, Xie Wei intended to head to Tongzhou immediately. Zhang Zhe and Jiang Xuening followed Huang to San Niang Zi, where Prince Pingnan’s rebel faction was gathering. Zhang Zhe claimed to be from Dujun Mountain, but San Niang Zi saw through Jiang Xuening's disguise as a man. Zhang Zhe said she was his sister, but it didn’t fully dispel their doubts. When Jiang Xuening was abducted by the rebels, her father was deeply worried.

Xie Wei told him the truth and promised to take full responsibility for Jiang Xuening’s safety, requesting that the matter be kept secret. Her father would claim publicly that Jiang Xuening had gone to a temple to pray for her mother. Jiang Xuening and Zhang Zhe spent the night temporarily at the rebel base. Many of Zhang Zhe’s actions reminded Jiang Xuening of their past life.

Back then, when they were attacked, Zhang Zhe had refused to drink water she had touched, but now he drank it without hesitation. San Niang Zi arranged a separate room for them to rest. Still suspicious, the rebels eavesdropped outside. Zhang Zhe and Jiang Xuening had to communicate cautiously by writing on their hands. Zhang Zhe promised to find a way to get her out. For Jiang Xuening, she would always trust Zhang Zhe.

As soon as she said it, memories of their ambiguous past surged back. When Zhang Zhe tried to leave, Jiang Xuening grabbed his sleeve, saying it would arouse suspicion, and she was afraid to be alone. Xie Wei asked the emperor to give him the Yan family seal to go to Tongzhou and coordinate the situation. Duke Xue, displeased upon learning of the scheme, opposed the plan.

The emperor did not give full command to Xie Wei, only permitting him to go ahead while Duke Xue would bring reinforcements a few days later. The next morning, Jiang Xuening slept soundly leaning on Zhang Zhe. News came that Feng Mingyu wanted to see Zhang Zhe. No one had ever seen the real person from Dujun Mountain.

Seeing Feng Mingyu trying to make a move, Jiang Xuening grabbed Zhang Zhe’s hand and shouted at him, turning the suspicion on Feng Mingyu. But Feng Mingyu refused to confirm Zhang Zhe’s identity. At this crucial moment, Xue Dingfei appeared. Jiang Xuening was shocked — had Xue Dingfei in their past life also returned to the palace under Prince Pingnan’s orders?

Xue Dingfei still acted like a dissolute noble, but even he confirmed Zhang Zhe’s identity, and Feng Mingyu could no longer object. Duke Xue was ordered to take the Xingwu Guard to Tongzhou, but he remained wary of Xie Wei. Xie Wei rushed to where Zhang Zhe and Jiang Xuening had stayed the night before and found clues left by Xiaobao, deciding to hasten to Tongzhou. Xue Dingfei found a chance to relay messages with Xiaobao.

Zhang Zhe discovered saltpeter on the carriage. When Xue Dingfei burst into the carriage, Zhang Zhe turned the tables and threatened him. Xue Dingfei revealed his mission, which led Zhang Zhe to suspect he was working for Xie Wei, much to Xue Dingfei’s frustration. Zhang Zhe believed Xie Wei was too entangled with the rebels, but Jiang Xuening firmly trusted that Xie Wei was a good man.

Zhang Zhe responded that wrong was still wrong, which made Jiang Xuening even more upset. Xie Wei arrived at the Tongzhou military camp, but the Yan family troops did not trust him until he showed a letter from Yan Mu, which finally convinced them.

Episode 22 Recap

Outside Tongzhou city, Xue Dingfei insisted on entering, but Feng Mingyu wanted to split up Jiang Xuening and Zhang Zhe. Though unwilling, Jiang Xuening had no choice. She and Xiaobao entered the city with San Niang Zi and others. Along the way, they inquired about Zhang Zhe, and Jiang Xuening claimed they were in love but their families disapproved, so this mission was also an elopement.

Xue Dingfei and Zhang Zhe entered with Feng Mingyu, whose words hinted at ambitions to seize Tongzhou. Feng Mingyu tested Zhang Zhe continuously. When Zhang Zhe asked Jiang Xuening what had happened, she said they eloped. Zhang Zhe was startled, covered her mouth, and said she was mistaken. Zhang Zhe wasn’t worried about his own reputation, but Jiang Xuening’s. Jiang Xuening suddenly had a stomachache. San Niang Zi said she was poisoned. Xiaobao suggested taking her to Doctor Xie.

Although worried, Zhang Zhe understood Xiaobao’s real intention. With a heavy heart, he watched them board the carriage. On the way, Xiaobao killed the driver and gave Jiang Xuening the antidote. This was the only plan he had to save her. He also told her that Zhang Zhe was part of Xie Wei’s plan and not to worry. Jiang Xuening was saved. News came from Xue Dingfei that Feng Mingyu had taken them to Shangqing Temple before dawn.

Daoqin reminded Xie Wei to use the opportunity to eliminate Zhang Zhe. Jiang Xuening also feared Xie Wei might harm Zhang Zhe due to suspected ties with the rebels, so she hurried to the pharmacy Xiaobao mentioned and confirmed Xie Wei never intended to let Zhang Zhe leave Tongzhou alive. Zhang Zhe followed Feng Mingyu to Shangqing Temple, which was the rebel explosives base. Feng Mingyu still doubted Zhang Zhe’s identity despite Duke Xue’s arrival.

With clever arguments, Zhang Zhe turned the suspicion on Feng Mingyu. Even San Niang Zi and Huang Qian attacked Feng Mingyu. Seeing this, Xue Dingfei dragged Zhang Zhe away. Jiang Xuening rushed to the Yan camp. When Xie Wei received the news, he became more anxious and took more medicine. Meanwhile, the Xingwu Guard was also approaching the mountain. Zhang Zhe insisted on returning to warn Duke Xue.

But Duke Xue, eager for credit, ignored him and fell into a trap. Zhang Zhe's identity was exposed. Despite Zhang Zhe’s pleas, Duke Xue fired a signal flare. Xue Dingfei was found by Yan troops and quickly pointed Jiang Xuening to Zhang Zhe’s location. Feng Mingyu blew up the road down the mountain. Realizing the trap, Duke Xue and Duke Xue's son had no choice but to fight their way out.

Xie Wei realized the chaos on the mountain but rushed up for Jiang Xuening’s sake. Feng Mingyu had gone mad, trying to blow everyone up. Huang Qian and San Niang Zi turned against him to save themselves. Zhang Zhe begged Duke Xue to assist the Yan troops, but Duke Xue fled with the Xingwu Guard. Just as Zhang Zhe and Jiang Xuening were left helpless, Xie Wei arrived with reinforcements. He raised his sword — Jiang Xuening thought he would kill Zhang Zhe and stood in front of him, but Xie Wei killed Feng Mingyu instead and ordered all rebels executed.

Episode 23 Recap

Jiang Xuening tried to apply medicine for Zhang Zhe, but he declined, saying it would be inappropriate. Xie Wei said he had already petitioned credit for Zhang Zhe’s deeds. As expected, Zhang Zhe questioned Xie Wei’s true identity. Xie Wei didn’t answer and instead asked Jiang Xuening to leave. Reluctantly, she left with Xiaobao, who took her to rest and gave her a change of clothes — all arranged by Xie Wei.

Zhang Zhe finally understood that Xie Wei’s scheme had been a deception from the start. Xie Wei never intended to let him return to the capital alive. But for Xie Wei, Zhang Zhe’s life didn’t matter. If Zhang Zhe thought reporting everything to the emperor would bring peace, he could go ahead. Still, Zhang Zhe realized Xie Wei was right — for Feng Mingyu to transport explosives unnoticed, countless court officials must have been involved.

They had simply chosen different paths. Xie Wei didn’t want to be his enemy, and what Zhang Zhe chose to do was up to him. As Xie Wei turned to leave, Zhang Zhe said Jiang Xuening had been dragged into the conflict because of him, provoking Xie Wei to question their relationship. Zhang Zhe insisted it was none of Xie Wei’s business. Xie Wei invoked the teacher-student bond, but Zhang Zhe said that bond came with proper boundaries.

Xie Wei’s disregard infuriated him. Xie Wei blamed Zhang Zhe for Jiang Xuening’s danger, saying if he had truly cared, he wouldn’t have involved her at all. Emotions should be wholehearted; if conflicted, one should stay away. Otherwise, Xie Wei would not hesitate to kill him again. Xue Ye was wounded and verbally abused the Yan troops treating him. The Xue father and son were arrogant, but Xie Wei intervened to stop the conflict between the Yan and Xue families.

Landslides had blocked the mountain path, and the Yan troops were working on repairs. Xie Wei wasn’t in a rush. Xue Dingfei was brought before Xie Wei. When Duke Xue overheard his name, the Xingwu Guard checked the scar behind his ear. Duke Xue was shocked to learn that Xue Dingfei was still alive. Xie Wei had ordered Xue Dingfei to kill Zhang Zhe, but he had failed. Now, because of Jiang Xuening, Xie Wei also couldn’t kill Zhang Zhe.

Prince Pingnan had used Xue Dingfei’s identity but dared not trust Xie Wei, so he found a substitute. But both knew that being a puppet meant death once the plan succeeded. If Xue Dingfei sided with Xie Wei, the identity would be his. If not, he was free to leave. That night, Jiang Xuening brought food to Zhang Zhe, whose injured arm made it hard to eat.

She pleaded on Xie Wei’s behalf, hoping Zhang Zhe wouldn’t report anything to the court. But Zhang Zhe asked what her relationship with Xie Wei was. Though she said it was only that of teacher and student, Zhang Zhe didn’t believe it. Back in the capital prison, he should have given up the mission and taken her away, but he involved her due to imperial orders.

Zhang Zhe apologized, admitting his efforts were not worthy of Jiang Xuening and that he felt deeply guilty. He trusted Jiang Xuening. As long as Xie Wei didn’t betray the court, he would keep silent. Late at night, Duke Xue sought a doctor for Xue Ye, reminding Xie Wei of the time he was held hostage by Prince Pingnan on the city wall — and Duke Xue had shown no mercy.

Jiang Xuening passed by and was seized by Xie Wei, who angrily asked if she truly cared about Zhang Zhe enough to die for him. Jiang Xuening believed Xie Wei was a good man who shouldn’t kill the innocent. But Xie Wei coldly threatened her, saying Zhang Zhe may be good, but he was not. Jiang Xuening was now entangled in his game. If there was a next time, he would kill her first. Terrified, Jiang Xuening fled.

Moments later, Xie Wei coughed up blood — his cold poison had worsened, and he needed immediate care. But he ordered his men to keep silent. He could not afford to collapse. Jiang Xuening began to reflect on her feelings for Zhang Zhe. Thinking back, much had not changed. If she insisted on being with him, what would the outcome be? Her father sent a message asking when she would return to the capital, as her birthday was approaching.

The next moment, Jiang Xuening sought out Xie Wei and softened her stance. The Yan army asked Zhang Zhe to uncover the truth about the stolen supplies from the Tongzhou camp and clear their name. Xie Wei summoned Xue Dingfei and Xiaobao, instructing them to prepare for Jiang Xuening’s birthday. Xue Dingfei also agreed to obey Xie Wei’s orders once they returned to the capital.

The You family threatened Zhou Yinzhi to release You Fangyin, forcing Zhou to go to the Xie residence, where he happened upon Lü Xian. Xie Wei was preparing Jiang Xuening’s birthday, but she didn’t like it — she never celebrated it. Xie Wei knew Zhang Zhe was an upright and honest official, but they were not the same kind of people. Xiaobao said Jiang Xuening didn’t want the gifts, and Xie Wei, angered, threw them all away.

The You family took You Fangyin home and made a lavish meal, claiming she had a perfect marriage prospect — an official in his fifties with over twenty concubines. They intended to marry her off to pay for her father’s business debts. Lü Xian, worried, brought supplies and pretended to need the bathroom so he could find her. Her room was locked, and only Lü Xian could help her now.

Madam Meng had never celebrated Jiang Xuening’s birthday, while Jiang Xuehui’s birthdays were joyful. The two were more like true mother and daughter — this was why Jiang Xuening didn’t celebrate hers. But Zhang Zhe said Yan Lin would surely want her to have a happy birthday. This one especially deserved to be celebrated.

Episode 24 Recap

Jiang Xuening still dressed herself up carefully and promised to have a proper birthday celebration. Xue Dingfei planned to follow Xie Wei to the capital, so he also wanted to go to the banquet with Jiang Xuening—after all, the more friends one has, the more options. As they reached Xie Wei’s residence, snow began to fall. Xue Dingfei asked if Xie Wei wanted to attend Jiang Xuening’s birthday, but he declined.

Jiang Xuening also said he wasn't in good health and should rest. Just then, Zhang Zhe came over with an umbrella, and Xie Wei's face darkened even more. Xue Dingfei prepared a stove for hotpot. He said he returned to the capital to reclaim what was rightfully his and took the opportunity to give Jiang Xuening a birthday gift. Zhang Zhe’s gift was a small portrait with a few words—Jiang Xuening liked it very much. They smiled at each other.

Zhang Zhe thought of his mother, wondering how she was doing in his absence. Tongzhou had a tradition of setting off fireworks. After dinner, the three watched the fireworks across the city. Jiang Xuening felt a little disheartened, thinking that even if some things were done over, they might still be unchangeable. Xue Dingfei said that as long as one did their best, there might still be a chance for change.

Meanwhile, Xie Wei sat restlessly in his room, deeply unsettled. Xue Dingfei got drunk, and Zhang Zhe, holding an umbrella, escorted Jiang Xuening home. She accidentally tripped, and Zhang Zhe caught her—the blush on both their faces was quite suggestive. Feeling hot, Xie Wei called for someone to open the door, only to see Jiang Xuening and Zhang Zhe walking side by side. Enraged, he slammed the door shut again. Jiang Xuening and Zhang Zhe reminisced about their first meeting.

She thought that while Xue Dingfei was unreliable, he was still a hundred times better than Xue Ye. Though she couldn't quite understand Xue Dingfei, she trusted that anyone Xie Wei took seriously wouldn't be wrong. She didn’t notice Zhang Zhe’s disappointment and ran off to pick a plum blossom branch.

She didn’t like wearing flowers, so she gifted it to Zhang Zhe, saying that he was the kind of scholar who would be adorned with flowers by the emperor himself. Jiang Xuening suddenly recalled the words on the portrait, “Together with peace for all lifetimes”—this had become Zhang Zhe’s new wish. In the previous life, Jiang Xuening had begged Zhang Zhe to spare Zhou Yinzhi, which led him to prison and self-condemnation.

Later, when Jiang Xuening found Zhang Zhe, he told her that his mother had died three days earlier, indirectly caused by her. That was also why Zhang Zhe in the past life hated himself and wished for death. Thinking of all this, the flower fell from Jiang Xuening’s hand. Overwhelmed with guilt, she ran off. Suddenly, You Fangyin said her stomach hurt. The doctor diagnosed it as pregnancy.

Lü Xian immediately stepped forward to ask the You family to allow their marriage, even offering three thousand taels as a betrothal gift. The doctor had been arranged by Lü Xian—he wanted to use this trick to help You Fangyin escape her predicament. It was the most direct way. You Fangyin was both angry and frustrated. Lü Xian said that even if Jiang Xuening hadn’t asked him to help, he still would.

He had watched You Fangyin move about freely during this time, and her life shouldn’t be confined to a deep mansion. In the future, she could go wherever she pleased, even do business if she wanted. For now, they could make do. If she ever wanted a divorce, he already had the divorce letter ready. You Fangyin was deeply moved by this. Xue Guogong was spying on Xue Dingfei and got discovered by Xie Wei.

Xie Wei said that Xue Dingfei bore some resemblance to Xue Guogong, though Xue Guogong didn’t seem pleased. As the mountain roads reopened, Xie Wei had Xiaobao stay in Tongzhou to monitor the situation. Xue Guogong dispatched a team to ambush Xie Wei and his companions, but Xie Wei had already arranged for the Yan family army to escort them.

Upon hearing about Xue Dingfei, Xue Ye nearly exploded, but Xie Wei made it clear that Xue Guogong must not touch Xue Dingfei, forcing him to cancel the plan. The Empress Dowager and the Emperor were thrown into turmoil upon receiving Xie Wei’s letter. The Emperor wanted to reward Xue Dingfei, but the Empress Dowager panicked—after all, Xue Dingfei hadn’t voluntarily sacrificed himself for the Emperor all those years ago.

Still, Xue Dingfei was the only survivor among the three hundred loyal souls. The Emperor needed to give an account to the people. Jiang Xuening found the reactions of Xue Dingfei and Xue Guogong odd, but Xie Wei told her to just enjoy the show. After returning to the capital, Xie Wei took Xue Dingfei to court. Though some questioned his identity, he recalled stories from the Emperor’s youth and displayed the crescent-shaped scar behind his ear—no one could refute him.

Episode 25 Recap

Upon seeing the crescent scar behind Xue Dingfei’s ear, Xue Guogong fell silent. Xie Wei recalled its origin: he and the Emperor had been competing in archery, and after losing, the Emperor was furious. Xue Guogong had slapped him, leaving that scar. With Xie Wei's words, Xue Guogong had no choice but to acknowledge Xue Dingfei. That scar had been there since the day Xue Dingfei stood in as Xie Wei's double.

The Emperor wanted to reward Xue Dingfei, but Gu Chunfang suddenly stood up and questioned how he had survived back then. Xue Guogong tried to stop him, but Xue Dingfei continued, claiming that he had been imprisoned by Prince Pingnan, who had wanted to send him back to take over military power in Tongzhou and the capital—that was how he had survived. Xue Dingfei earnestly requested to live in the Guogong Mansion.

Xue Guogong was shocked, but the Emperor agreed, much to Xie Wei’s satisfaction. After court, many began currying favor with Xue Dingfei. Chen Ying asked why he called his father “Lord Guogong. ” Xue Dingfei bluntly criticized Xue Guogong for abandoning his mother and marrying another. Enraged, Xue Guogong called him a bastard, but Xue Dingfei didn't acknowledge him as a father and provoked him to the point of almost being struck.

Zhang Zhe accused Xue Guogong of embezzling supplies and manipulating the Yan family case. The Emperor was furious, but Zhang Zhe insisted on reopening the case. Gu Chunfang quickly pulled Zhang Zhe away. The Empress Dowager summoned Xue Guogong to the palace. She reminded him that if not for him, Prince Pingnan wouldn't have gone to extremes. She feared that if the truth got out, the Xue family would be condemned for generations.

Meanwhile, the imperial physician told the Emperor that Consort Qin might be pregnant with a prince, jeopardizing their plans. But there was nothing the Empress Dowager could do—the Emperor now treasured Consort Qin dearly. When Xue Guogong expressed intentions against the Emperor, the Empress Dowager sternly warned him. The Emperor noticed Xue Guogong’s unusual reaction in court. Despite being close kin to Xue Dingfei, he didn’t look pleased but rather frightened.

Xie Wei requested the seal of the Yan family army to ensure the Emperor’s safety, and the Emperor agreed. Gu Chunfang asked Zhang Zhe if Xie Wei had done anything suspicious, but Zhang Zhe, recalling Jiang Xuening’s words, said nothing. Gu Chunfang said Zhang Zhe’s mother had visited and told him to return home. Jiang Xuening returned to the Jiang family.

Her father didn’t plan to pursue the matter, but Madam Meng was relentless, fearing Jiang Xuening would bring trouble to the family. Jiang’s father, however, knew that Madam Meng worried about Jiang Xuening daily, and now that she was back, she said such things. Zhang Zhe rushed home only to find his mother’s frozen body in the snow. Upon learning of her death, Jiang Xuening hurried to the Zhang residence.

After setting up the mourning hall and settling the old lady, Zhang Zhe locked himself in his room, consumed with hatred for himself. Xie Wei also heard the news and prepared a carriage to visit. No one could persuade Zhang Zhe. Jiang Xuening carefully entered his room. He said he was not a good official—words that chilled her to the bone. She blamed herself for everything, saying he should have been like the moon in the sky, not a commoner.

At Shangqing Temple, she had asked Zhang Zhe whether he believed in past lives. She had dreamt of his being misunderstood and his mother dying to clear his name. Jiang Xuening used every hurtful word, saying she had always used him. She didn’t want him to lose his will to live again—she would rather have him hate her if it meant he would keep living. Just as Xie Wei arrived, he saw Jiang Xuening’s devastated figure.

He hurried over to comfort her. Jiang Xuening wanted Zhang Zhe to hate her, but she couldn’t stop loving him. In deep pain, she asked Xie Wei for an answer. Instead, he pulled her into an embrace, saying if she couldn’t forget, then find someone better—someone more suitable. Jiang Xuening had someone watch over Zhang Zhe. She had lost her appetite and sleep. Just then, she received an invitation from You Fangyin to visit the Lü residence.

Episode 26 Recap

At the Lü residence, Jiang Xuening learned about You Fangyin and Lü Xian and angrily kicked Lü Xian out. Marriage was no trivial matter. She planned to discuss with Xie Wei to arrange for their divorce once the storm passed. But You Fangyin was firm—marrying was her best way to leave the You family, and Lü Xian treated her well, second only to Jiang Xuening. Seeing You Fangyin’s determination, Jiang Xuening went to speak with Lü Xian.

He truly loved You Fangyin and swore on his life that he would never mistreat her; otherwise, he wouldn’t earn a cent in his lifetime. Xue Dingfei brought many troubles to Xue Guogong but remained remarkably patient. Xie Wei wanted Xue Dingfei to buy time while he handled the rest. Since returning to the capital, no one had seen Lü Xian. Then news broke that he and You Fangyin had married. Jiang Xuening did not look pleased as she left.

The next day, Xie Wei went to the palace to meet Gu Chunfang, and together they proposed to the Emperor to exempt Zhang Zhe from the traditional three-year mourning period. With internal and external crises, the court needed capable people. Upon learning of this, the Empress Dowager summoned Xue Shu to the palace. The Emperor agreed to the exemption and rewarded those involved in the Tongzhou matter. Shen Jie was to select a consort.

The Empress Dowager summoned Xue Shu to discuss it. Shen Jie favored Jiang Xuehui. Not wanting conflict, the Empress Dowager agreed, and Xue Shu reluctantly complied. The Emperor rewarded Xue Dingfei generously. Xue Dingfei took the chance to scold Xue Guogong and even hit Xue Ye. Xue Guogong couldn't bear it anymore and kicked Xue Dingfei in front of everyone. Xue Dingfei ran around the courtyard and even gave Xue Ye a kick in return.

After a full day of work, Xie Wei summoned Lü Xian, who genuinely cared for You Fangyin. Xie Wei also sent a gift. Shen Jie had been keeping vigil at a temple and finally saw Jiang Xuehui. He hoped she would participate in the consort selection. Though hesitant, Jiang Xuehui knew everyone thought Shen Jie’s wife could only be her.

Shen Jie said that his wife must be someone he truly loved—if Jiang Xuehui would take one step, he’d take the remaining ninety-nine. Jiang Xuening and Jiang Xuehui entered the palace that day. Shen Zhiyi was delighted to see Jiang Xuening. Xue Shu came up to mock Jiang Xuehui, only to be rebuffed by Jiang Xuening.

Xue Dingfei tearfully told the Emperor that Xue Guogong had beaten him and claimed that Xue Guogong said the Emperor had long forgotten his support from the past. The Emperor’s expression changed immediately and summoned Xue Guogong. Xue Dingfei and Xie Wei performed a coordinated act, revealing that Xue Guogong’s military achievements were false. Everyone assumed Xue Shu would become Shen Jie’s princess consort. Jiang Xuehui worried she would disgrace the Jiang family if she lost.

What could she do if fate was so? Outside the palace, they encountered Xue Dingfei and Xie Wei. Seeing Xie Wei reminded Jiang Xuening of that day. He asked her to come play the zither with him. She tried to run but stopped when he mentioned news about Yan Lin. At home, Xue Shu found Xue Ye injured. Furious, he wanted to ask the Empress Dowager to strip Xue Dingfei of his post.

Their mother asked Xue Shu to find a way to preserve Xue Ye’s title. Meanwhile, Xue Shu overheard that Jiang Xuening had also gone to Tongzhou. Xie Wei had arranged everything for Yan Lin and Yan Mu. Jiang Xuening thought perhaps Yan Lin was always meant to be free. She asked why Xie Wei had summoned her, but he wouldn’t say. She turned to leave, and his gaze grew uneasy.

Episode 27 Recap

Xie Wei watched Jiang Xuening walk away, love in his heart but unable to express it. He said he never used Jiang Xuening. Back in Tongzhou, Jiang Xuening once asked him if he used everyone. Perhaps that was true for others, but not for her. When he first came to the capital, Jiang Xuening saved his life—no matter what, she was different from the rest.

But Jiang Xuening failed to grasp the deeper meaning in his words, replying that she would have saved anyone in that situation. Xie Wei then said Zhang Zhe was not right for her. For over twenty years, he had never bowed to fate, and he didn’t want Jiang Xuening to be trapped in sorrow.

Xie Wei had already spoken with her father; starting tomorrow, Jiang Xuening would come to his residence to continue learning the zither, and he could also inform her of the situation in Huangzhou in time. While listening to a storyteller in a teahouse, Xue Dingfei overheard gossip about a noble lady from the capital, claiming that Jiang Xuening had met her lover secretly in prison during the Tongzhou incident.

Jiang Xuening's parents also heard the rumor and confronted her at home. Jiang Xuening suspected it was the work of the Xue family. Madam Meng scolded her harshly without considering the circumstances, calling her reckless and bold. Jiang Xuening retorted sharply, saying that her fury was likely out of fear that this matter would ruin Jiang Xuehui’s marriage. Her father, however, could see more clearly and suspected that this misfortune might not have originated with Jiang Xuening.

Upon learning that Jiang Xuening was grounded, Jiang Xuehui grew worried and wanted to explain to Madam Meng, but was stopped by her maid—going to Madam Meng would mean exposing her secret affair with Shen Jie. Xue Dingfei rushed to Xie Wei and told him what he had heard. Jiang Xuehui received a letter from Xue Shu and went to meet her in private.

Though Xue Shu had been chosen by the Empress Dowager as Crown Princess to Prince Linzi, she knew Shen Jie, with his personality, would defy everything to marry Jiang Xuehui, disgracing both herself and the Xue family. Therefore, she wanted Jiang Xuehui to withdraw from the consort selection, preserving the Jiang family's reputation. Jiang Xuehui asked whether she was doing it for Shen Jie or the position—but for Xue Shu, that didn’t matter.

Jiang Xuening wrote a letter for someone to deliver to Shen Jie. She knew Jiang Xuehui, with her character, would definitely drop out of the consort selection, so only Shen Jie could resolve this. Zhang Zhe sat gloomily at home, remembering how his mother once asked him if he had someone else in his heart, and he couldn’t help but cry.

Gu Chunfang came by; Zhang Zhe thought he was there to persuade him to return to court, but today it was Xie Wei who wanted to see him. Xie Wei came for Jiang Xuening. With rumors swirling in the capital, Zhang Zhe was the best person to speak up. During the Tongzhou mission, Jiang Xuening had taken an arrow for Zhang Zhe—there was clearly sincerity in her heart.

That night, Shen Jie broke into the imperial study, begging the Emperor to allow him to marry as he wished. The Empress Dowager and the Xue family were forcing him to marry Xue Shu. The Emperor, enraged, drove him out. Shen Jie’s marriage wasn’t the real concern—the Empress Dowager's ambitions were. The Xue family had grown too greedy, and what the Empress Dowager cared about was unchanging power.

Jiang Xuening’s father told her he planned to retire and return to his hometown. Because of Jiang Xuehui, the Xue family had targeted Jiang Xuening. The political tide was dangerous, and he couldn’t protect her. Rather than see her suffer, he would rather resign. But Jiang Xuening pleaded with him not to. The feud between the Jiang and Xue families was already set, and the Xue family would not spare them.

But for her father, all that mattered was that his two daughters were safe—he didn’t need to remain a minister. Jiang Xuening knelt before him, realizing she had never truly understood others' difficulties. Her eyes welled with tears, and her father agreed to reconsider. The next day at court, Jiang Xuening’s father accused Duke Xue of embezzling disaster relief funds. Duke Xue denied the charges and counteraccused him of slander. At that moment, Zhang Zhe stepped forward with a memorial.

After reading it, the Emperor was furious. Jiang Xuening had been forced into the enemy camp with Zhang Zhe, while Xue Shu had abused her power to spread vile rumors throughout the city. Xie Wei also stepped in to escalate matters. The Emperor ordered Xie Wei and Zhang Zhe to investigate thoroughly. When the Empress Dowager found out, she slapped Xue Shu hard. Back at home, Duke Xue also struck her, furious that she had shamed the Xue family.

Xue Shu burned with hatred. Madam Meng blamed Jiang Xuening’s father for taking such action. At that moment, Jiang Xuehui came forward to confess. Upon learning of her affair with Shen Jie, Madam Meng slapped her too and ordered her to withdraw from the selection and avoid the mess. But Jiang Xuehui remembered what Jiang Xuening had said and, for the first time, defied Madam Meng—she would follow her heart this time.

Madam Meng, furious, tried to invoke house rules but was stopped by Jiang Xuening’s father. Upon learning of Jiang Xuehui’s resolve, Jiang Xuening praised her—perhaps this was the real Jiang Xuehui.

Episode 28 Recap

Late at night in the palace, an urgent report arrived from the border—Dayue had been provoking repeatedly, but the treasury was empty, and they could not go to war. Duke Xue volunteered to lead troops, but Zhang Zhe opposed it, saying that if war was inevitable, Yan Mu was the best candidate. The Emperor didn’t make a decision immediately.

Xie Wei pondered—Duke Xue had his own motives in volunteering and also wished to use the opportunity to bring back the Yan family. Unexpectedly, Zhang Zhe had the same intention but acted quicker. Still, the Emperor agreed to neither—both the Xue and Yan families were like wild beasts in his eyes. Shen Zhiyi suddenly appeared at the Jiang residence, dressed as a man, frightening Madam Meng. But she was there to see Jiang Xuening.

Jiang Xuening also disguised herself and took the rare chance to show Shen Zhiyi a good time outside the palace. That night, they sat and talked—others thought Shen Zhiyi was noble, but her hardships were many. If possible, she wished she hadn’t been born into royalty and could explore the wide world. Jiang Xuening sensed something wrong, thinking something had happened in the palace. But Shen Zhiyi said they were just chatting.

As night fell, palace attendants came to fetch her. She forced a smile and told Jiang Xuening that all was well in the palace. But Jiang Xuening sensed unease—soon came news that the Emperor was considering a political marriage. In her previous life, Shen Zhiyi had died on such a mission. Jiang Xuening panicked—it was happening again, and if Shen Zhiyi married into Dayue, she would die. It must not happen! Jiang Xuening ran to Xie Wei for help.

With a bit of guidance, she had an idea. She spread rumors that it should be a daughter of the Xue family to be married off. The people already resented the Xue family. So Jiang Xuening found Xue Dingfei, asking her to help gather those voices as resistance. That night, Zhou Yinzhi came to Xie Wei, saying he was being restricted in the Xingwu Guard and asked Xie Wei for guidance.

Xie Wei told him to find evidence of Duke Xue's private army. With Xue Dingfei stirring the waters, public outrage exploded. Xue Ye traced the source to Weng Ang, causing a scene. Afterward, Duke Xue scolded him harshly. Now, only Xue Shu could be sent for the political marriage. Xue Shu begged the Empress Dowager, but even she wouldn’t help—royalty had no familial bonds, and Xue Shu was just too stupid. Xue Shu knelt outside the palace gates until nightfall and finally chose to sacrifice herself for survival—she went to the Emperor, offering her allegiance, pledging loyalty, and submitting herself.

Episode 29 Recap

The next morning, Xue Shu was titled Consort Xian. Duke Xue was furious, and the Empress Dowager was even more enraged. Shen Zhiyi ran into Xue Shu, completely unable to understand her actions. Jiang Xuening also hadn’t expected Xue Shu to stoop so low. But now, the focus had shifted back to Shen Zhiyi. The Emperor, still hesitant, was finally persuaded by Xue Shu’s words to make a decision. Jiang Xuening begged Xie Wei to save Shen Zhiyi.

He said the political marriage was already settled. Jiang Xuening, with no other choice, used the only favor he owed her, kneeling and even declaring they were even and owed each other nothing. Xie Wei was furious, forced her to stop, lifted her chin, and warned her never to say that again. As for Shen Zhiyi, he promised to keep her behind. The imperial edict was issued.

Shen Jie begged the Empress Dowager for a way out, but she said she could not oppose the decree. Shen Zhiyi was heartbroken—the Empress Dowager would do anything for the Emperor and Shen Jie, but not for her. Shen Zhiyi left bitterly, telling Shen Jie to figure out how not to let Jiang Xuehui down. Neither wanted to be born royal.

Xie Wei couldn’t stop the marriage but could fake Shen Zhiyi’s death en route, which would also serve his plan. After arguing with Madam Meng, Jiang Xuehui knelt in the ancestral hall all night. Madam Meng was distressed but helpless. At dawn, it was the day of the consort selection. Jiang Xuehui had made up her mind. Before she entered the palace, Madam Meng came to see her from a distance but said nothing.

On the day of the selection, Jiang Xuehui was anxious. Xue Shu came just to watch the spectacle. Shen Jie was torn. He recalled the Empress Dowager’s words—she could only give Jiang Xuehui a secondary consort title. The Emperor also told him the title didn’t matter, but if he insisted on naming her principal consort, the reward would be poisoned wine. In the end, Shen Jie betrayed Jiang Xuehui and gave her a rose representing a secondary consort.

Jiang Xuehui stood frozen, then accepted the flower with thanks. Shen Jie, in disarray, casually chose Su Miao as principal consort. As she prepared to enter the prince’s mansion, Jiang Xuehui brought back Wan Niang’s lantern. Jiang Xuening told her she was nothing like Wan Niang. Back then, they lived in the countryside, bullied for being exiled, but Wan Niang would curse right back. To Jiang Xuening, she was the most extraordinary woman she’d seen.

But Wan Niang had always looked at her as if through her, seeing someone else. Later, Jiang Xuening discovered her true origins and finally understood Wan Niang’s erratic moods. Before she died, Wan Niang had gripped her hand tightly, asking her to give her bracelet to Jiang Xuehui. Jiang Xuening hadn’t planned to, but now she did. So what if she was just a secondary consort—was there a fate more difficult than their identity exchange?

Jiang Xuehui’s path would be different, and Jiang Xuening believed Shen Zhiyi would find a way too. The escort for Shen Zhiyi was suddenly changed from the Imperial Guards to the Xingwu Guard—it was Xue Shu’s request, forcing Xie Wei to alter the plan. Xue Shu came to mock Shen Zhiyi to her face. Shen Zhiyi, unable to bear it, slapped her—calling her utterly disgraceful.

Xue Shu, unfazed, ordered her men to keep a close watch and report if Jiang Xuening appeared. All the attendants came to bid farewell, except Jiang Xuening. Still, Shen Zhiyi believed she would come. Jiang Xuening did come. She wanted to persuade Shen Zhiyi to disguise herself and flee the palace. But Shen Zhiyi refused—she was a princess. If she left, war would follow. She couldn’t let the people suffer.

Jiang Xuening never imagined Shen Zhiyi would make such a decision. She knew Shen Zhiyi would die, but she couldn’t stop her. Shen Zhiyi said, “When Yan Lin crushes Dayue with Da Qian’s iron cavalry, bring a handful of this homeland’s soil to greet me. ” Jiang Xuening once again painted the Falling Sakura makeup on her. They parted reluctantly. From now on, Shen Zhiyi could no longer protect her.

When Xue Shu heard Jiang Xuening had arrived, she rushed to confront her, only to be surprised that she had done nothing. Xue Shu slapped her, declaring she would reclaim all the hate.

Episode 30 Recap

When Shen Zhiyi appeared before everyone, Xie Wei looked astonished. Xue Shu ordered people to hold Jiang Xuening down and even smashed the handful of soil that Shen Zhiyi had given her. Jiang Xuening stared fixedly at the soil scattered on the ground; the whip lashes on her body were the same pain Shen Zhiyi had felt when leaving her homeland. After the scene dispersed, Xie Wei learned that Jiang Xuening hadn’t come out.

Xue Shu had vented her anger and said she’d let Jiang Xuening go if she begged for mercy. At that moment, Xie Wei arrived and Xue Shu finally spared Jiang Xuening. Trembling, Jiang Xuening gathered the soil into a box, tears falling from her eyes. Seeing Jiang Xuening in such a state made Xie Wei furious, but he was also concerned about her health. He quickly picked her up and placed her in the carriage.

Jiang Xuening clutched the box tightly—it was the last thing Shen Zhiyi had left her. She couldn’t save anyone, couldn’t protect anyone, and in the end, she was just a pitiful clown. Xie Wei tried to comfort her, promising that he would help her reclaim the dignity she had lost today. As for Shen Zhiyi, she would definitely return. Hearing that Jiang Xuening had not returned, her father was about to lead people out to search.

Outside the mansion, Xie Wei’s carriage had already arrived. Jiang Xuening had fallen asleep, and as Xie Wei carried her down, he couldn't help but kiss her—just as her father arrived to scold his daughter and saw it. Zhou Yinzhi, searching through records, was discovered by the Xue family. Duke Xue pressured him to reveal the person behind the scenes, and Zhou Yinzhi immediately gave up Xie Wei.

The next day after court, Jiang Xuening’s father found Xie Wei and reminded him that as her teacher, he should mind his conduct. But Xie Wei pretended not to understand. He insisted that he wouldn’t let worldly norms restrain him, enraging Jiang Xuening’s father. Xie Wei planned to transfer Yan Lin’s father out of Huangzhou. With Duke Xue possibly plotting rebellion, he had no choice but to provoke things.

Lü Xian noticed something was off with Xie Wei’s mood—he didn’t expect that Xie Wei had kissed Jiang Xuening the night before. But sadly, Jiang Xuening had no feelings for him. Jiang Xuening’s spirits improved, and her father immediately brought up the topic of marriage. However, Jiang Xuening had no one in mind and no desire to marry. She just wished to leave the capital and return home after Jiang Xuehui got married.

Jiang Xuening said she had offended many in the palace due to her recklessness. If she stayed, she would only bring disaster to the family. She pleaded for her father’s approval. He refused to let anything from Xie Wei into the house, leaving Xie Wei helpless. Tomorrow would be Shen Jie’s wedding. Madam Meng called for Jiang Xuehui. Jiang Xuehui wore Wan Niang’s bracelet.

Over the years, Madam Meng had treated her like a daughter and had sewn her wedding gown by hand. Originally, she had hoped Jiang Xuehui would marry in that gown, but now she was to be the side consort of Prince Linzi, and the palace would provide her attire. The gown would be kept as a token of their mother-daughter bond. At Shen Jie’s wedding, both Xie Wei and Zhang Zhe were present.

The Empress Dowager had ordered that Jiang Xuehui and her attendants could only leave after the wedding ceremony. Starving, Jiang Xuehui suffered stomach pain, but Su Shangyi brought a meal box prepared by Jiang Xuening and a love knot from Shen Jie. He feared getting too close would bring trouble to Jiang Xuehui, but his feelings had never changed.

At the banquet, Jiang Xuening’s father saw Xie Wei and immediately brought up choosing a husband for Jiang Xuening, even asking about Zhang Zhe. Xie Wei couldn’t help but interrupt, making her father even more furious. He had also brought Jiang Xuening, but she withdrew from the banquet to drink alone. In the past life, she had married Shen Jie in Jiang Xuehui’s place. Now, she felt a sense of melancholy.

Shen Jie suddenly appeared—Jiang Xuening thought that at least their fate was now settled. Shen Jie and Fang Miao completed their wedding rites. Jiang Xuening’s father was full of sorrow. Jiang Xuening left alone, with Xie Wei hurrying after her. Jiang Xuening suddenly said she no longer wanted to fight with the Xue family and planned to leave the capital, startling Xie Wei.

Episode 31 Recap

Hearing that Jiang Xuening planned to leave the capital shocked Xie Wei. He couldn’t hold back and asked who she was trying to avoid and why she didn’t want to stay. No one dared to provoke her now, and he was outside to protect her. If she wanted fun, he could call Xue Dingfei to accompany her. If she couldn’t stand Xue Shu, he had a hundred ways to deal with her.

He also had news about Yan Lin and Shen Zhiyi—why couldn’t she stay? Jiang Xuening said she had always acted recklessly, which made Xie Wei even more agitated. What was wrong with continuing to act recklessly? Controlling his emotions, Xie Wei grasped her shoulders and reminded her of her identity: daughter of the Minister of Revenue, companion to the princess, sister-in-law to Prince Linzi, and his own student—what was she afraid of?

Jiang Xuening broke free, and Xie Wei, frustrated, brought up Zhang Zhe, provoking her. She retorted that he had always disdained her, so why stop her now? Xie Wei admitted that things were different now—he had changed. He begged Jiang Xuening not to leave. They were the same kind of people. There was no true freedom in the world. As long as the heart was attached, even fleeing to the ends of the earth would be futile.

Jiang Xuening bit Xie Wei and fled. He fell ill upon returning, and the illness had no cure. Lü Xian had to knock him out. Jiang Xuening dreamed again of how, in the past life, she had seduced Xie Wei to seek protection—how much she had resembled Xue Shu then. That path could never end well. Again and again, Jiang Xuening told herself Xie Wei had loathed her in the past and could never love her.

He was a traitor, a rebel, incapable of sincere feelings. He merely feared she would escape his control and leak his secrets. Jiang Xuening begged her father to let her go. Though furious and thinking it was because of Xie Wei, he finally agreed. As Xie Wei lay gravely ill, Lü Xian worried about him going to Huangzhou. At this time, Jiang Xuening returned the qin as a parting gift.

To save Xie Wei, Lü Xian took the qin to the Jiang household and insisted it had nothing to do with Xie Wei. He told Jiang Xuening a story—Xie Wei had once been a man of virtue. Lü Xian had passed the imperial exam but still served under Xie Wei, because Xie Wei was just a man struggling desperately against fate.

Lü Xian would soon go to Huangzhou, but Xie Wei was determined to have a final showdown with the Xue family. Lü Xian asked Jiang Xuening to keep an eye on him. As soon as Xie Wei woke up, the palace summoned him. He had to take the Jinshi powder to stay awake. The envoy escorting the bride was executed. Shen Zhiyi had also been taken.

Xie Wei volunteered to travel north under the pretense of peace talks, taking the Yan army to probe Dayue’s strength. The Emperor agreed. After persuading Jiang Xuening, Lü Xian returned to persuade Xie Wei: if he truly cared for her, don’t let her run. Jiang Xuening, troubled and uncertain, was surprised when Xie Wei suddenly visited. Her father refused to see him, but Jiang Xuening had something to ask.

Xie Wei apologized for what happened and brought news of Shen Zhiyi. When Jiang Xuening heard of Shen Zhiyi’s peril, she was furious. If war broke out, Shen Zhiyi would surely die. Upon hearing that Xie Wei had decided to rescue her, Jiang Xuening insisted on going too. Xie Wei agreed, but this time she had to obey him completely—and tell nothing to her father.

Episode 32 Recap

When Jiang Xuening left, Madam Meng finally appeared. Jiang Xuening wore the outfit Madam Meng had given her. She handed her a safety charm and, though her words were sharp, her heart was soft. They were mother and daughter, after all. Madam Meng ultimately wished Jiang Xuening peace and happiness. Both were in tears. Jiang Xuening had chosen this path and would walk it, but the family doors would always be open to her.

With tears in her eyes, Jiang Xuening departed under her parents’ gaze. She turned back to thank Madam Meng and called her “Mother” for the first time in her life. Madam Meng was deeply moved. At the post station, Xie Wei had already been waiting. Affairs in the capital had been settled. Jiang Xuening’s only goal now was to bring Shen Zhiyi home. On the road, they were ambushed by assassins. Jiang Xuening and Xie Wei fell from the carriage.

Xie Wei left the qin behind and fled on horseback with her in his arms. They ran until nightfall, evading their pursuers. Daoqin and Jianshu were enough to ensure safety, but to escape the pursuers, they released the horse and trekked through the mountains on foot. Hearing wolves howling, Jiang Xuening clung to Xie Wei’s arm in fear. But for Xie Wei, no beast was more terrifying than the human heart.

Xie Wei was bitten by a snake but kept it from Jiang Xuening. They found a cave to stay warm. As Jiang Xuening built a fire, Xie Wei fainted. When he came to, he saw Jiang Xuening sucking the venom from his wound. He hadn’t really fainted—he had just been resting and took the chance to mock her medical skills. Laughing, Jiang Xuening recalled how Xie Wei used to treasure his qin when they came to the capital.

Now, for her, he had lost it. She said she’d get him a better one, but that only made Xie Wei angrier. Xie Wei turned away to sleep. Snow began falling. In his dreams, he returned to the palace coup where the Empress Dowager had threatened his mother’s life to force him to impersonate the Crown Prince. Jiang Xuening heard him crying out for his mother and saying Dingfei was willing to go.

She worried he might have a dissociative episode upon waking. Before she could decide what to do, a cat entered the cave. For Xie Wei, this was another nightmare. Jiang Xuening knew he feared cats and tried to chase them away with a torch. Xie Wei was confused by the sight. Jiang Xuening managed to drive them out but was suddenly pinned against the wall by Xie Wei. He said she should’ve left long ago.

But now that she wanted to go, it was too late. Xie Wei gripped Jiang Xuening’s hands and kissed her wildly. Though she pushed him away repeatedly, he couldn’t stop. He resented her feelings for Zhang Zhe and claimed she never truly understood him. He even threatened to die with her in the cave. But Jiang Xuening told him, “I saved your life. Don’t be a coward. Don’t make me despise you. ” The snow stopped.

Xie Wei regained his senses. Jiang Xuening hadn’t expected he would remember everything. Daoqin and Jianshu finally found them, but noticed a strange tension between the two. Jiang Xuening stopped Xie Wei from taking the Yunshi powder. He agreed without hesitation and carefully tended to her wounds. Jiang Xuening began to suspect Xie Wei might truly be Xue Dingfei. But how much had he suffered to survive in a place like Jinling? He was the one who never knew peace.

Episode 33 Recap

Frontier. Yan Lin and his father had arrived at the border city under Lü Xian’s guidance. When asked about the next plan, Lü Xian calmly stated he would move into the General’s Manor and take over the Yan family army. Yan’s father felt it was inappropriate, as it would be disobeying the emperor’s order. However, Lü Xian presented an imperial decree authorizing them to take command. Though the decree was real, the contents were written by Xie Wei.

Yan’s father and Yan Lin were shocked, but Lü Xian assured them that as long as they could successfully rescue Shen Zhiyi, everything could be resolved. The Prince of Dayue murdered for amusement, a senseless tyrant. Shen Zhiyi was furious witnessing it all, helpless as he slaughtered Da Qian’s people. Yan Lin was thrilled to see Jiang Xuening again. Their reunion brought joy to both.

Yan Lin explained the current situation to Xie Wei, who believed that attacking recklessly would play into the enemy’s trap. Yan’s father was relieved to see Xie Wei and Jiang Xuening safe. Jiang Xuening noticed that Yan’s father and Xie Wei had something to discuss and took her leave. Yan Lin, now knowing Xie Wei’s true identity, acknowledged him as an elder brother. With both Yan Lin and his father present, Xie Wei had finally returned home.

He finally called Yan’s father “uncle,” and both were tearful. Xie Wei said the one who should atone was Duke Xue, was Prince Pingnan. Back then, Duke Xue had shot arrows at Xie Wei from the city wall without hesitation. Xie Wei abandoned his former name and adopted the name Xie Wei. With Yan family blood flowing in him, he lived not only for himself but also for the three hundred unjustly slain souls.

Xue Dingfei was in the capital when Prince Pingnan came knocking. Xiao Bao was seriously injured. Yan Lin took Jiang Xuening to eat, having already made friends with the locals. He asked if Jiang Xuening was with Zhang Zhe, and she remained silent. Yan Lin playfully presented her with flowers picked from the roadside, hoping to cheer her up. But even if it wasn’t Zhang Zhe, it wouldn’t be him either. After the wontons, Xie Wei had also prepared dinner.

Jiang Xuening, not wanting to upset him, forced herself to eat—but every dish on the table was sour. The Prince of Dayue invited Xie Wei for a meeting the next day—a clear trap, yet Xie Wei decided to go. Hearing Jiang Xuening hadn’t eaten out of worry, he made her peach blossom cakes. The taste was oddly familiar to Jiang Xuening, and she recalled having it long ago. Xie Wei was to meet the prince the next day.

Jiang Xuening grew angry at her own concern for him, but she trusted Xie Wei, believing he would safely bring Shen Zhiyi back. The next day, Xie Wei went to the meeting alone. He was well-versed in Dayue’s affairs and skillfully debated, grasping their psychology. Yet the Prince of Dayue, arrogant and fickle, had Xie Wei surrounded. He was colluding with Prince Pingnan, unaware that Xie Wei was prepared.

Yan’s father led troops in to rescue him, while Yan Lin’s appearance was deliberately exposed by Xie Wei. Meanwhile, Shen Zhiyi had secretly untied herself and escaped with Dao Qin’s help. The Prince of Dayue was quickly captured, and Yan Lin rounded up the Dayue soldiers. Xie Wei and the Yan father and son returned with Shen Zhiyi. She tearfully reunited with Jiang Xuening, who held in her hands the soil of her homeland and its former capital.

She welcomed Her Highness home. Duke Xue received a secret letter from Prince Pingnan revealing Xie Wei’s true identity. Though he was Xie Wei’s biological father, he refused to allow Xie Wei to return to the capital.

Episode 34 Recap

Duke Xue sought an audience with the emperor, accusing Xie Wei of falsifying the imperial decree and plotting rebellion with the Yan family. But the emperor, recognizing the gravity of the situation, told him to return for now. Jiang Xuening tended Shen Zhiyi’s wounds. Shen Zhiyi saw much at the frontier that the palace never showed. Xie Wei suspected Xue Dingfei had fallen under Prince Pingnan’s control.

Jiang Xuening shared what Xie Wei had done with Shen Zhiyi, who, while grateful, didn’t trust Xie Wei’s intentions. Surely, he had feelings for Jiang Xuening—what about her feelings for him, traveling so far to be here? If the emperor blamed Xie Wei, a man of his capabilities might indeed rebel—then what would Jiang Xuening do? Jiang Xuening, restless, paced in front of Xie Wei’s door. She first thanked him for saving Shen Zhiyi, then asked about his next move.

Whatever path he chose might no longer concern her—she had always intended to leave. But Xie Wei wouldn’t agree to that or allow her to go. Jiang Xuening pleaded with him to let her go. Xie Wei grew agitated and advanced on her step by step. He asked—she could care about Yan Lin, miss Zhang Zhe, and worry about Shen Zhiyi, but when it came to him, it was only “please let me go. ” What was he to her?

Jiang Xuening turned to leave but was seized by the wrist. She knew everything—his identity, his hatred, his feelings for her—but she had always avoided confronting it. If she truly felt nothing, why had she risked death for him repeatedly? Could she swear she truly felt nothing for him? Jiang Xuening lowered her eyes. Xie Wei pressed harder, dragged her outside. Xie Wei wanted Jiang Xuening to see herself clearly. They were nothing but molten iron in this forge.

A cracked vase cannot be mended. But if they were born to be iron, they weren’t so fragile. A coward like her didn’t deserve to be with Zhang Zhe. Jiang Xuening was enraged—life did not yield to force. But for Xie Wei, even bitter fruit was still fruit. He kept asking what she feared in him. Jiang Xuening lost control—“What if you had killed me? ” Xie Wei handed her a knife and told her to kill him.

As the blade pierced his body, he begged her not to fear him anymore. Jiang Xuening froze—Xie Wei truly was a madman. Heartbroken, Jiang Xuening left the manor, only to be knocked out by Prince Pingnan’s men. Xie Wei, though not gravely injured, was disturbed after reading a note left by Prince Pingnan. Jiang Xuening awoke, weakened—she had been drugged. Prince Pingnan brought in Xiao Bao and Xue Dingfei. Xiao Bao’s limbs had been severed.

Jiang Xuening was devastated by Prince Pingnan’s cruelty, who then killed Xiao Bao before her. He wanted Jiang Xuening to persuade Xie Wei to help him succeed. He wanted to see how far Xie Wei would go for Jiang Xuening. Xie Wei, Yan Lin, and Shen Zhiyi all worried for Jiang Xuening. Knowing the kind of person Prince Pingnan was, Xie Wei resolved to meet him personally. Xie Wei met Prince Pingnan alone, using honeyed words, but was flogged instead.

Jiang Xuening rushed in to stop it. Prince Pingnan demanded that Xie Wei persuade the Yan family to march south and seize the capital. Xie Wei refused. Prince Pingnan ordered more beatings, and Jiang Xuening knelt, begging him to stop. She would convince Xie Wei. Xie Wei agreed, playing along with the act. Back in their room, Jiang Xuening tended to his wounds. She believed in Xie Wei’s ability to resolve things.

To quell the unrest in the capital, Xie Wei said they must kill Prince Pingnan. Mentioning Xue Dingfei, Jiang Xuening grew sad. When she learned Xiao Bao had been killed, Xie Wei was enraged as well. He met with Xue Dingfei, promising revenge but needing his help. Xue Dingfei feared death—he wanted to live. But Xie Wei believed Xue Dingfei would prefer a life free of all ties.

Xie Wei wrote to the Yan family, urging them to march south—tantamount to rebellion. Lü Xian believed Jiang Xuening was only pretending to ally with Prince Pingnan and had a plan. Yan’s father made up his mind—they would follow Xie Wei’s strategy.

Episode 35 Recap

Jiang Xuening offered her bed to the wounded Xie Wei, but he declined. When he sensed that a guard outside was spying for Prince Pingnan, he jumped onto the bed and pinned Jiang Xuening under him—Prince Pingnan wouldn’t believe there was nothing between them. As long as he believed Xie Wei was obsessed with Jiang Xuening, they’d be safe. Xie Wei asked Jiang Xuening to act the part. She made intimate sounds, and Prince Pingnan, hearing this, was reassured.

Jiang Xuening and Xie Wei slept on the same bed. Jiang Xuening covered her face, embarrassed. When news came that the Yan family had raised arms, Prince Pingnan was delighted. Meanwhile, chaos broke out in the capital due to Xie Wei’s actions. Duke Xue requested to suppress the rebellion, but Gu Chunfang suggested sending someone to negotiate. The emperor sent Zhang Zhe to the front to question Xie Wei’s rebellion. Duke Xue went to the Empress Dowager for help.

However, the emperor had grown wary of her. The Dowager could do nothing. Duke Xue claimed that only if Prince Linzi ascended the throne would the Xue family remain unshaken. Xie Wei asked Prince Pingnan to host a festival, assigning Xue Dingfei to organize it. Prince Pingnan gladly agreed. Receiving Xie Wei’s letter, Lü Xian and the Yan family scrutinized it and discovered the hidden message: “On Dragon Boat Festival, capture Pingnan.

” Xie Wei told Jiang Xuening to hide and not emerge no matter what she heard. He gave her his knife for protection, promising to bring her home safely. That night, Jiang Xuening asked why he hadn’t questioned what she meant by “What if you killed me? ” Xie Wei didn’t want to know. Secrets didn’t matter to him.

She then asked—when she learned his secret on their journey to the capital years ago, had he ever thought of killing her? He hadn’t. Because she saved him. He never forgot that she never abandoned him. At the Dragon Boat Festival banquet, Prince Pingnan drank heartily, unaware the food and wine had been drugged by Xue Dingfei. Suddenly, he ordered Jiang Xuening brought forth, accusing her of causing the Tongzhou incident and declaring she must be sacrificed.

Xie Wei intervened, but Prince Pingnan insisted he sever Jiang Xuening’s hand and their ties. He already suspected Xie Wei, and this was a warning. Without hesitation, Xie Wei chose to cut off his own hand. When Jiang Xuening saw him stab his left hand, she was overwhelmed with sorrow. She could never repay him. But for Xie Wei, nothing in the world compared to Jiang Xuening. Yan Lin arrived with soldiers.

Prince Pingnan and his men, weakened by the drug, were powerless. Still, he tried to attack. Xie Wei shielded Jiang Xuening. He carried not only Xue family blood but also Yan family loyalty. With such a heritage, he could never be a traitor. In the end, as Prince Pingnan raised his blade, Jiang Xuening stabbed him again. Soon, Yan Lin arrived. Xie Wei was gravely wounded, and Jiang Xuening was beside herself with worry.

Yan Lin told her Xie Wei had anticipated this outcome and had ordered Xue Dingfei to ensure Jiang Xuening’s escape. Yan Lin, realizing the depth of Xie Wei’s love for Jiang Xuening, felt ashamed of himself. Hearing the news from the capital, Yan’s father resolved to submit a memorial requesting the execution of Prince Pingnan to avoid being falsely accused again. Jiang Xuening stayed by Xie Wei’s side. His hand was injured, likely never to play the qin again.

Jiang Xuening said she would play for him instead. The emperor praised Xie Wei, leaving Duke Xue increasingly uneasy. He hurried to see Xue Shu.

Episode 36 Recap

Jiang Xuening's zither playing was truly grating to the ears. No matter how hard Xie Wei tried to teach her, she had no talent at all. Pouting, Jiang Xuening was summoned to Xie Wei’s side. By now, Jiang Xuening thoroughly understood Xie Wei. When he asked whether she was still afraid of him, Jiang Xuening admitted she was more worried about the perilous state of the capital.

In truth, she had always wanted to ask Xie Wei if he planned to rebel, and Xie Wei was surprised that she cared so much about this question. Jiang Xuening and Xue Dingfei had agreed to visit Xiaobao, bringing mung bean cakes that Xie Wei said the child liked. Xue Dingfei had freed himself from Prince Pingnan’s control and now only wished to live carefree, but for Xie Wei, things were not so easy.

Lately, Xie Wei had suddenly developed a desire to live—he wanted to live longer so he could protect Jiang Xuening. The Emperor and Consort Qin were conversing when Xue Shu brought over some pastries, only to be scolded by Consort Qin. Xue Shu promptly agreed to collude with the Duke of Xue. To deal with Xie Wei, the Duke of Xue interrogated Zhou Yinzhi, who revealed You Fangyin—someone closely connected to Jiang Xuening and very important to her.

Soon, You Fangyin was taken away by the Xingwu Guards. Xie Wei was to depart the next day. Xue Dingfei came to say goodbye, confessing he had always known that this name was the embodiment of Xie Wei’s hatred. Bound together for twenty years, their entanglement could now be considered brotherhood. Xie Wei offered tea in place of wine to send him off, leaving the vast world ahead for Xue Dingfei to roam freely.

Xie Wei, Jiang Xuening, and others had just reunited with Yan Mu when Zhang Zhe arrived. The imperial edict called for a reward to the three armies and ordered the Yan family army to guard the border. Xie Wei was to escort Shen Zhiyi back to the capital. Zhang Zhe kept glancing at Jiang Xuening, which filled Xie Wei’s gaze with jealousy. Seeing Jiang Xuening return safely, Shen Zhiyi finally relaxed and eagerly pulled her away for a long talk.

Regarding Jiang Xuening and Xie Wei’s relationship, Shen Zhiyi was somewhat worried about Jiang Xuening. After all, Xie Wei was deeply calculating, and Jiang Xuening had already fallen for him. She felt for Xie Wei and did not want him to remain alone. Xie Wei ordered a new zither and wanted to properly teach Jiang Xuening how to play, but she was mentally distracted, lost in thought. Zhang Zhe appeared beside Jiang Xuening holding an umbrella.

It had been a long time since their last parting. He had come to understand her words back then—she was doing it for his own good, and now all he could offer was gratitude. When Xie Wei found out Jiang Xuening had met with Zhang Zhe, he was furious. Jiang Xuening and Zhang Zhe argued because of Xie Wei. Overwhelmed by emotion, Jiang Xuening snapped—if Zhang Zhe had gone through what Xie Wei had, he might not say such things!

Zhang Zhe asked her, if his mother had not died that day, would she still have chosen to let go? Jiang Xuening replied that love is hard to turn back from—she now favored Xie Wei. Summoned by Xie Wei, Jiang Xuening advised him to think carefully about the imperial edict. As for her, she didn’t want to implicate the Jiang family and intended to lie low for a while.

But Xie Wei, enraged by her meeting with Zhang Zhe, lost control, repeatedly insisting that Jiang Xuening belonged to him. The room filled with ambiguity. When Lü Xian came to see Xie Wei, he was turned away by Daoyin. After their tender moment, Xie Wei proposed marriage to Jiang Xuening, but she gave no answer. Before dawn the next day, Xie Wei went to a military meeting. Jiang Xuening, fuming with anger, waited all day without seeing him.

Xie Wei spent the day in the military camp, visibly uneasy. Yan Mu and Yan Lin noticed it too—everyone could see Xie Wei and Jiang Xuening’s feelings for each other. But Yan Lin held no resentment; whoever Jiang Xuening chose was her own decision. As for Xie Wei, he had suffered greatly over the years. When Xie Wei returned home and learned Jiang Xuening had waited for him all day, he hesitated whether to go see her. Lü Xian, however, saw it clearly—Xie Wei was afraid of losing her.

Episode 37 Recap

Jiang Xuening was fuming. She had wanted to think everything through before discussing the future with Xie Wei, but he had dashed off early in the morning. She couldn’t tell who was at more of a disadvantage between them. Love was one thing; marriage was another. Jiang Xuening needed more time to figure things out. Xie Wei grew even angrier. The Emperor had no intention of punishing Xie Wei—after all, capable men were needed in court.

Upon hearing this, Xue Shu quickly sent a message to the Duke of Xue: they could wait no longer—the time had come. You Fangyin was hidden and interrogated at the Xue residence. Zhou Yinzhi urged her to say something—anything would do, true or not, since she was Jiang Xuening’s close friend. But You Fangyin refused, prompting Zhou Yinzhi to use branding torture. Xie Wei and Lü Xian received news of You Fangyin’s capture and decided to return to the capital.

The war with the Xues had begun. Xie Wei saw Jiang Xuening with Zhang Zhe and shared the plan to return to the capital. Then he told her about You Fangyin. Jiang Xuening was furious—she had always known Zhou Yinzhi’s nature and should have eliminated him earlier. She planned to rescue You Fangyin from the Xue residence and gave her sword to Xie Wei, wishing him a safe return.

But Xie Wei was full of resentment—she couldn’t give him a promise, yet still stirred his emotions. Xie Wei’s true goal had always been Prince Pingnan and the Xue family. This return to the capital was for the sake of the realm. Yan Mu also hoped Xie Wei wouldn’t be blinded by hatred. They bid each other farewell. Before departing, Jiang Xuening looked toward Xie Wei, but he hesitated to speak.

When the Emperor learned that Xie Wei had set out for the capital, he had no intention of punishing him—so long as Xie Wei and Yan Lin remained loyal. Suddenly, the Emperor coughed up blood. The Empress Dowager questioned Xue Shu, who feigned ignorance, enraging the Dowager to the point of ordering her to be slapped. At that moment, the Duke of Xue arrived and told the Dowager the Emperor did not have long to live.

She instantly realized the Duke and Xue Shu were colluding. Furious, she tried to call for help, but the Duke threatened her into silence and revealed Xie Wei’s identity. The Dowager was devastated by how the Duke could harm his own flesh and blood, but ultimately gave silent consent to their plan. Xie Wei and Zhang Zhe escorted Shen Zhiyi back to the capital, where she was summoned by the Empress Dowager.

Zhang Zhe, Xie Wei, and Yan Lin headed to the imperial study. Though the Emperor was very ill, he insisted on seeing them. But before they arrived, he fainted. Zhang Zhe, Xie Wei, and Yan Lin were surrounded by Xue Ye. Weaponless, they had only Yan Lin and Jianshu to resist. Yan Lin told Jianshu to lead Xie Wei and Zhang Zhe away.

Meanwhile, the Duke of Xue presented an imperial edict transferring power to Prince Linzi, ordering the arrest of Xie Wei and his group. Gu Chunfang didn’t believe his one-sided claims but was still placed under house arrest. Lü Xian and Jiang Xuening led men to the Xue residence to rescue You Fangyin. Zhou Yinzhi took You Fangyin hostage to save himself, but she held him back during his escape and was stabbed in the chest by him.

She refused to let someone like Zhou Yinzhi escape. Jiang Xuening was devastated—she wished You Fangyin could stay with her forever, but it was too late. You Fangyin looked once more at Lü Xian. Sadly, she hadn’t signed the divorce papers, leaving Lü Xian labeled as a widower. She had always known his feelings and believed they would be together someday. Unable to hold on, You Fangyin collapsed in Jiang Xuening’s arms.

Episode 38 (Ending) Recap

Zhou Yinzhi was dragged back by Daoyin. Jiang Xuening glared at him with hatred. He pleaded for his life, saying the Xue family had already launched a coup. If he died, no one would do her bidding again. But to Jiang Xuening, Zhou Yinzhi’s life wasn’t worth one ten-thousandth of You Fangyin’s. Lü Xian raised his sword and killed Zhou Yinzhi in revenge.

Zhang Zhe handed Xie Wei a token granted by the Emperor, allowing him entry into the imperial city and command of the Yan family army. He said someone like Xie Wei shouldn’t die here. But the Duke of Xue arrived with reinforcements. To him, Xie Wei—his son Xue Dingfei—had lived twenty extra years by heaven’s grace, and he felt no affection for him. Daoyin led troops through a secret passage into the palace.

In her panic, Jiang Xuening twisted her ankle and could only limp along. Xue Shu took advantage of the Emperor’s drowsiness from his medicine to strangle him in his sleep. Zhang Zhe and Yan Lin supported each other against the enemy. Just in time, Yan Lin brought reinforcements from the Yan family army, capturing Xue Ye and the Duke of Xue. Xie Wei and the Emperor had laid out a plan before leaving the capital.

Xie Wei had revealed his true identity and the tiger-head shoes in the tunnel. He explained that years ago, Prince Pingnan had indeed killed part of the three hundred soldiers, using the rest to force the Emperor to appear. The Duke of Xue, seeking glory for breaking into the city, ignored the battle plan and enraged Prince Pingnan into a massacre. Over the years, the Duke of Xue had committed countless atrocities.

Xie Wei and the Emperor had staged this scheme to rise from the ashes. The Emperor had long known and approved of it—and was aware that Xue Shu was poisoning him. Xue Shu failed to kill the Emperor and was caught on the spot. Though defeated, the Duke of Xue still tried to disgust Xie Wei. No matter what, he was Xie Wei’s biological father. If Xie Wei killed him, how would he face the judgment of the world?

Jiang Xuening rushed to the palace, horrified by the carnage. The Duke of Xue tried to incite Xie Wei to join him, but Xie Wei took Yan Lin’s sword and slashed at his own hand again. The debt of blood was now repaid in full. Even if Xie Wei didn’t kill him, the Emperor would. The Duke should atone before his mother in the afterlife. Seeing Jiang Xuening arrive, Xie Wei froze.

At that moment, the Duke lunged again and shot an arrow at Xie Wei, only to be killed by Daoyin. Xie Wei was struck and collapsed into Jiang Xuening’s arms. She sobbed in fear, begging him to wake up—promising she would marry him if he did. Hearing this, Xie Wei opened his eyes. Her words were true. The chaos came to an end. The Empress Dowager was sent to guard the tombs, never to return.

Xue Shu was given poisoned wine. The rest were exiled to Huangzhou, forbidden from returning. Lü Xian grieved the loss of his beloved, while Xue Dingfei lived freely. After the Emperor’s death, the throne passed to Consort Qin’s young son, with Xie Wei as regent. Though honored with many titles, Xie Wei felt lost. He had plotted so much, yet he was just someone who should have died twenty years ago. As he came, so should he go.

Jiang Xuening dreamed of Xie Wei cutting his own throat and woke with a start, only to find him beside her, holding a cat. Outside, their children Xie Tian and Xie Yun were building a snowman, a scene of happiness and peace. They had found a secluded paradise, living like a fairy-tale couple. Shen Zhiyi, Yan Lin, and Zhang Zhe came to visit for the New Year, and Jiang Xuening invited them in. Xie Wei followed behind, carrying Xie Yun.

Xie Tian kept praising Zhang Zhe and got two kicks from Xie Wei for it. Time flew by, and Jiang Xuening and Xie Wei lived like an immortal couple. After typing “The End” on her computer, Jiang Ning received news that her book would be published in print. Soon after, she met her editor “Xie Juan. ” When their eyes met, it felt like they had seen each other before.
