The story begins with the Emperor and Sun Youzhen discussing the impropriety of Sun Yulou's proposed marriage to Princess Zhaohua. The Princess herself cancels the engagement, branding Sun Yulou a scoundrel. With this cleared, Sun Yulou convinces Lin Shaochun, who had temporarily returned to the Lin manor, to come back home to have children, even carrying her back when she initially resists. Upon their return, they encounter Sun Yourong, Sun Yulou's third sister, who has come back from Changzhou.
Sun Yourong claims to have prospered by lending money, showcasing lavish but old-fashioned jewelry. However, Lin Shaochun quickly grows suspicious of her financial boasts. She observes Sun Yourong's maids hungrily eating leftovers and notices the maids do not even know Sun Yourong's preferred tea, confirming Lin Shaochun's suspicion that Sun Yourong is in fact in financial distress.
Lin Shaochun discreetly warns Xu Fengqiao and Wu Yuehong against investing in Sun Yourong's "business," leading them to decide against it after witnessing the maids' poor state. Aunt Mei is initially persuaded by Sun Yourong. Later, Sun Yourong desperately tries to convince her family to invest, but everyone finds excuses to refuse. That night, Sun Jingge is caught by Xu Fengqiao attempting to steal money from her. He claims it is for business, but Lin Shaochun is skeptical.
Lin Shaochun and Sun Yulou devise a plan to help him. Sun Yulou buys Sun Jingge's antique birdcage for a significant sum. Sun Jingge then secretly gives this money to Sun Yourong, who urgently accepts it, asking him to keep it a secret. Sun Yulou and Lin Shaochun confront Sun Jingge shortly after. Shen Qingyao notices bruises on Sun Yourong's arm and asks Lin Shaochun to investigate.
At breakfast, Lin Shaochun subtly pressures Sun Yourong about her impending departure, prompting Sun Yourong to leave abruptly, feeling pushed. Despite some initial family disapproval and gossip suggesting Lin Shaochun drove Sun Yourong away, Lin Shaochun assures Sun Yulou that her actions are for Sun Yourong's own good. After Sun Yourong leaves the manor, having returned her rented carriage, maids, and jewelry, Lin Shaochun follows her.
Sun Yourong tearfully confesses her predicament: her husband, Fang Jiading, became abusive after their family's decline and his inability to find employment. She had secretly come to her family for help out of desperation, but her pride and Fang Jiading's insistence prevented her from openly asking. Lin Shaochun, now understanding the full extent of her plight, promises to help her fully.
