Because Su Tangli failed to carry out her task properly, she was severely beaten upon returning to the residence. Still, she pretended to be willing to trade her life for Prince Yu’s trust. Prince Yu picked her up and carefully applied medicine to her wounds while comforting her, saying that mistakes must be punished—that was his rule—and only Su Tangli was worthy of the care he gave.

Su Tangli was eager to leave, but Prince Yu forbade her from going anywhere, insisting that she stay so he could personally take care of her. Jian Mingshu brought preserved plum ginger to Wei Zhuo on Aunt Zeng’s behalf and happened to run into Cao Hai, who had come to visit Lu Chang. Upon learning Lu Chang had not returned home yet, Cao Hai said he would come another day. Jian Mingshu told Lu Chang about Cao Hai’s visit.

Lu Chang found it strange since they had already met at the Court of Judicial Review. A few days later, Cao Hai came again. Jian Mingshu told him Lu Chang was still busy with official duties, and Cao Hai began inquiring about their past in Jianglin. Lord Lu was summoned by the Emperor, who asked him whether Prince Yu or Prince Rui was more suitable to inherit the throne.

Terrified, Lord Lu prostrated himself and cautiously responded with perfectly diplomatic words. Prince Yu suspected Su Tangli had already developed loyal subordinates and ordered all of them to be eliminated. At a banquet hosted by the Emperor, Prince Yu accidentally knocked over a candleholder on the table, which enraged the Emperor. As punishment, the Emperor assigned the upcoming grand sacrificial ceremony to Prince Rui.

Su Tangli secretly went to Prince Yu’s study to look for clues, but Prince Yu soon returned and noticed his desk had been disturbed. Growing suspicious, he went to Su Tangli’s room. Knowing she couldn’t get back in time, Su Tangli pretended she had gone to bathe. Prince Yu wasn’t convinced and even pulled aside her clothing to check if her wounds showed signs of soaking in water. Song Qingzhao was investigating the old madam’s sudden illness at the banquet.

Lu Chang had already discovered that the real Miss Lu Si had died, and Lu Wan’er was an impostor. Su Tangli came at that moment to inform them that Lu Wan’er was one of Prince Yu’s people. She had overheard this in the Prince’s residence. Prince Yu’s true aim was to eliminate the evidence in Lord Lu’s hands.

Lu Chang and Jian Mingshu suspected that Prince Yu would take the opportunity to seek revenge on Prince Rui during the grand sacrificial ceremony. Lu Chang informed Lord Lu of this. Now deeply entangled in Prince Yu’s scheme, if anything were to happen to Prince Rui at the ceremony, Lord Lu would not escape death either. Joining forces with them was his only remaining chance. Lord Lu quickly agreed, on the condition that his entire family would be spared afterward.

Lu Chang went to the sacrificial altar and ordered a thorough inspection. Cao Hai, one of Prince Yu’s men, had secretly tampered with the altar. Jian Mingshu knew Lu Chang must have a plan. Since he had made up his mind, she would not stop him—in fact, she would face it together with him. Rituals for the ceremony required bathing and incense. Jian Mingshu was busy ironing clothes for Lu Chang.

Knowing that the day would likely be a life-or-death ordeal, Lu Chang looked at her with deep reluctance. Prince Rui insisted that Yin Shujun not attend the ceremony. Though disappointed, Yin Shujun complied. Lu Chang assigned Jian Mingshu to watch over Lu Wan’er, who had been distributing porridge and had not left the area.
