Serendipity Episode 25 Recap
> Serendipity Recap
Jian Mingshu brought Song's mother to Nanny Li, accusing her of being the one pretending to be a ghost. On the day of the haunting, Jian Mingshu had clearly seen her shadow. Without hesitation, Song's mother ordered a search, and sure enough, the clothes were found in Nanny Lü’s room. However, Jian Mingshu said that even if she had been pretending to be a ghost, the full story should be reported to the madam.
Song's mother invited Madam Wei over, but upon learning the truth, she was not surprised. Though she tried to speak several times, she couldn’t say a word. Jian Mingshu spoke for her, revealing that the ghost disguise was ordered by Madam Wei. The entire Wei family was under Wei Dushi’s control, so this may have been Madam Wei’s way of sending a signal for help.
Madam Wei could no longer suppress the truth and finally admitted that pretending to be a ghost was her last hope of survival. She had always regretted not listening to her parents' advice and marrying that bastard. For twenty years, every day had been hell. Wei Dushi did not allow her to have any contact with the outside world. She stayed quietly in the residence, but whenever Wei Dushi was even slightly displeased, he would beat and kick her.
Madam Wei had thought about divorce, but her family had lost power, and Wei Dushi threatened her using her family's safety. Nanny Li was originally sent to spy on her, but sympathized with her and agreed to help deliver messages. It was the first time Song's mother had learned about her friend’s suffering over the past twenty years and resolved to help her escape. Afterward, Jian Mingshu privately asked Madam Wei about the origin of the bracelet.
Madam Wei could tell she had come to the Wei residence with another motive, but Jian Mingshu explained that even if it wasn’t about the bracelet, she would still help her. Madam Wei indeed didn’t know where the bracelet came from, but every valuable item in the residence had been recorded by Wei Dushi. All these were hidden by him in Madam Wei’s dowry treasure chest. So, to get the medicine and a divorce, she needed to retrieve that chest.
Jian Mingshu thought of Lu Chang, suspecting that there might be clues in that chest that he needed as well. Both for personal and public reasons, she was determined to help Madam Wei achieve a successful divorce. Late at night, an assassin sneaked into Jian Mingshu’s room to kill her. Fortunately, she escaped with her cleverness, and at the crucial moment, Lu Chang saved her. Wei Dushi brought people over but was bent on killing Jian Mingshu.
She said that if Wei Dushi ordered the torches extinguished, they would be able to find the assassin. Due to Lu Chang’s presence, Wei Dushi had no choice but to comply. Jian Mingshu immediately identified the assassin—she had just sprinkled phosphorus powder on his head, which would glow in the dark once the torches were out. Unexpectedly, Wei Dushi killed the assassin without hesitation. Lu Chang was concerned for Jian Mingshu’s safety in the residence.
She asked him why he treated her so well. Lu Chang touched her face and said that since she called him “Brother,” of course he would do his utmost to protect her. Jian Mingshu tossed and turned, unable to sleep. Lu Chang treated her so well—what if they weren’t truly siblings? But if she didn’t get to the bottom of it, she would be unsettled.
The next day, Song's mother and Jian Mingshu made an excuse to leave the Wei residence. Wei Dushi once again threatened Madam Wei. Nanny Lü’s ghost disguise was discovered by Wei Dushi. She refused to betray Madam Wei, and Madam Wei couldn’t bear to see her suffer, so she confessed. Immediately, Wei Dushi violently beat her. Outside the residence, Song's mother, Jian Mingshu, Lu Chang, and Song Qingzhao had been waiting and rushed back when they heard the news.
This was all part of their plan—to expose Wei Dushi’s abuse of his wife. They even specifically brought an imperial physician. Madam Wei no longer believed Wei Dushi’s sweet talk and resolutely demanded a divorce. For the sake of his official reputation, Wei Dushi had no choice but to agree. Madam Wei produced the divorce papers she had long prepared and made him sign them in front of everyone present as witnesses.
Wei Dushi signed them but then took the papers back, saying he had guests to entertain tonight and would send her away tomorrow, returning both the divorce papers and her dowry. After Lu Chang and Song Qingzhao left, Lu Chang reminded Song Qingzhao of his feelings for Jian Mingshu—what would happen if Song’s mother found out the one he liked was Xuanqing?
That night, Wei Dushi hosted a banquet for Wei Zhuo, hoping to gain his protection and rise in rank. He had even prepared a beauty, Yan Shao, as a gift for him, hearing that he had neither wife nor concubines. Wei Dushi didn’t truly agree to the divorce—it was only a stalling tactic. At that time, Madam Wei, Jian Mingshu, and Song’s mother were chatting together, thinking they had already escaped the claws of the devil.
Jian Mingshu secretly entered Wei Dushi’s study to search for clues. She successfully found the divorce papers and account books, only to then hear the news of Wei Dushi’s death. Magistrate Jia arrived and ordered everyone to stay for investigation. At a glance, he saw Jian Mingshu disguised as an immortal.
