Among the top three scholars, one was Jian Mingshu’s brother, and one was Song Qingzhao, who admired her. Yin Shujun and Princess Wen’an teased that she must be feeling quite pleased today. However, a group of young ladies soon surrounded Jian Mingshu, eager to befriend her. Seeing the situation worsening, Yin Shujun and Princess Wen’an quickly pulled her away, but the girls chased after them.

Lu Chang dismounted and came running, while a group prepared to “catch a husband from the list. ” Lu Chang declared that he had already been betrothed in Jianglin and could not break the engagement. Back home, Jian Mingshu excitedly told Aunt Zeng about the day’s grand events and even asked about Lu Chang’s engagement in Jianglin. Aunt Zeng said he and that young lady had grown up together, but Lu Chang hadn’t been interested in romance at the time.

Now that time had passed, rekindling the relationship might not be possible. Aunt Zeng even asked about Jian Mingshu’s feelings, wondering if she’d reconsider if she were rejected. But Jian Mingshu was clear—she would never look back, better to miss it than regret it. Su Tangli came to talk to Lu Chang alone, making Jian Mingshu uneasy, guessing that Su Tangli might be the fiancée from Jianglin. Su Tangli told Lu Chang that she was now living in Prince Yu’s mansion.

Prince Yu would stop at nothing to achieve his goals, and Su Tangli wanted to use Lu Chang to reach hers. She even tried to recruit him to join Prince Yu. But Lu Chang refused and hoped Su Tangli wouldn’t take the wrong path. Su Tangli, however, rejected his well-meaning advice. If he refused to join her, then he should take care of himself.

Prince Yu, learning that Su Tangli had failed to sway Lu Chang, was furious and had her knocked unconscious and buried alive. If she escaped, he ordered her killed. Su Tangli woke and realized it was a test, and hurried back to Prince Yu’s mansion. Ying Xun came urgently to find Lu Chang, holding the official document showing his whole family’s entry into the capital. It clearly stated that Jian Mingshu was his sister.

But since she wasn’t yet registered in the Lu family’s household record, any inconsistency between the registry and official document would surely be investigated. Lu Chang, in a panic, decided to change the registry. Jian Mingshu inadvertently learned that Song Qingzhao had defied his father and gotten injured while she was unconscious. Her heart was full of complicated feelings.

Lu Chang was already on his way to change the registry—even though once this matter was settled, all his hopes would be dashed, nothing mattered more than Jian Mingshu’s safety. Jian Mingshu began wondering if she should respond to Song Qingzhao’s feelings. Yin Shujun thought they were well-matched but said the decision was hers alone. In truth, Yin Shujun’s marriage with Prince Rui wasn’t as perfect as it seemed.

Since the incident with Young Master Jiang, Prince Rui had grown distant. After their marriage, Yin Shujun realized Prince Rui was honorable, and she was genuinely happy. Jian Mingshu advised her to express her feelings to him. Princess Wen’an suggested going on an outing and inviting Prince Rui along. Lu Chang returned home to find Jian Mingshu asleep in the courtyard. He pulled her into his arms. Sensing something was wrong, Jian Mingshu asked what was bothering him.

Lu Chang said he was just remembering the past. Jian Mingshu had waited for him to ask whether she should try being with Song Qingzhao. Lu Chang’s heart shattered, but he forced himself to say yes, then locked himself away to cry in secret. Though he agreed, Jian Mingshu wasn’t truly happy. Their household records were transferred into the capital registry. Aunt Zeng looked back at Lu Chang after seeing Jian Mingshu’s name.

Lu Chang, dead inside, signed the registry with resignation. Jian Mingshu specially made ginseng chicken soup for Song Qingzhao. Seeing this, Lu Chang quietly left again, and went drinking with Ying Xun. If they hadn’t ended up together, he might have had a chance, but now that the choice was made, he had no future with her. He told himself to be a good brother and support all of Jian Mingshu’s decisions.

Drunk beyond reason, Lu Chang was carried back by Ying Xun. Jian Mingshu asked Aunt Zeng to rest while she stayed to take care of him. Lu Chang, in his drunkenness, patted her head and said no matter whom she wanted to marry, he would always support her. Prince Yu still didn’t fully trust Su Tangli, even though she continued to act sweet and obedient in front of him.

Seeing Lu Chang constantly downcast, Aunt Zeng urged him to learn to let go. Lu Chang forced a smile and said he was willing to stand by as her brother and silently give Jian Mingshu and Song Qingzhao his blessings.
