Wang Xin spoke to Ma Kui about his confusion regarding their relationship. He questioned why Ma Kui, who had been kind to him and taught him skills, harbored such animosity towards his father and vehemently opposed his relationship with Ma Yan. He felt his mind was in a mess trying to understand the root cause. Ma Kui revealed that years ago, during an arrest on a train, he was attacked and knocked unconscious by a thief.

The thief was later found dead after jumping from the train while fleeing. Ma Kui was subsequently accused of murder. He explained that Wang Yongge was present and witnessed the entire incident but refused to testify on Ma Kui's behalf, which led to Ma Kui being wrongfully imprisoned for ten years.

Ma Kui stated he didn't necessarily hate Wang Yongge but couldn't comprehend why his former colleague wouldn't speak a single word of truth for him, even just to say he disliked him. While acknowledging Wang Xin was a good and promising police officer, Ma Kui firmly stated that his relationship with Ma Yan was impossible because he could not bear for his daughter to call Wang Yongge her father.

Wang Xin vowed that if he survived their current predicament, he would uncover the truth behind the past incident. Overhearing their conversation, Ruo confessed that he had lied about having HIV. He had fabricated the illness because he was afraid of going to jail and even more terrified of facing his dangerous boss outside. He believed the illness was the only way he could remain in the hospital safely.

Ma Kui assured Ruo that if they got out, they would round up his boss's entire group, but Ruo would need to cooperate and provide information. Soon after, they received a call from Beijing: the results of their blood samples were negative for HIV. Both Ma Kui and Wang Xin were overjoyed. Ruo provided information about his boss's location. Ma Kui and Wang Xin worked with local police to track down and apprehend the group.

Back at their station, Wang Xin confronted Wang Yongge about the incident ten years prior, mentioning Ma Kui claimed he saw him on the train. Wang Yongge insisted he was in carriage number two, heard about a death in the dining car, and only saw Ma Kui being taken away when he arrived. He adamantly denied being in the dining car and couldn't testify for Ma Kui, dismissing Ma Kui's belief based on seeing clothes as illogical.

Later, news arrived of a new murder case in Yuzhou. The victim was identified as Lu Xiaomei, a 32-year-old local woman who was strangled to death. A witness reported seeing a person digging in a small bamboo forest during a heavy rainstorm, describing them as a relatively short man in a raincoat.

When police reached the burial site, they found Lu Xiaomei's body with one hand exposed, formed into a fist with the little finger extended – a seemingly deliberate gesture. Lu Xiaomei's distraught parents expressed their anger and frustration to the police, highlighting that the killer had committed multiple similar crimes without being caught and blaming the authorities for their daughter's death.

Ma Kui publicly vowed to catch the murderer, stating he would remove his police uniform if he failed, accepting the criticism and acknowledging the police's responsibility. While Wang Xin initially thought this was a rash statement, Ma Kui insisted it was a commitment. Reporting back to Captain Jiang about the Yuzhou case, Ma Kui noted the scarcity of clues, the unknown motive, and the random nature of the killer's actions.

Captain Jiang instructed them to return to their train duty, emphasizing the increasing crime rate on the railway. During a train journey, a passenger named Bao Jiashun became highly agitated, claiming someone was trying to kill him and attempting to jump from a window. Other passengers and officers intervened to restrain him. Officer Hu brought Bao Jiashun to the dining car, where Ma Kui and Wang Xin questioned him.

Ma Kui quickly suspected Bao Jiashun was under the influence of drugs. A search revealed drug paraphernalia. Bao Jiashun confessed to being a drug addict who owed significant debt and feared his creditors. Wang Xin pressed him for the source of the drugs. Bao Jiashun named his dealer as Rat, who he contacted by phone to arrange meetings, but claimed not to know where Rat lived.

Initially hesitant to betray Rat, Bao Jiashun was ultimately persuaded by Ma Kui's stern yet empathetic approach, which focused on the devastating consequences of drug addiction and the possibility of turning his life around. He agreed to call Rat. Bao Jiashun placed a call to Rat to arrange a drug purchase. Ma Kui and Wang Xin staked out the area. Rat arrived, cautiously surveying the surroundings before meeting Bao Jiashun.

The transaction took place, and Ma Kui and Wang Xin moved in to apprehend Rat. Rat quickly confessed that his boss was named San Tou Qiang and was located in Shenzhen. He communicated with San Tou Qiang solely by phone. Recognizing the importance of this lead, Ma Kui decided they needed to go to Shenzhen immediately to pursue San Tou Qiang before word of Rat's arrest spread. They contacted the Shenzhen police.

Upon arriving at Shenzhen station, they were greeted by Officer Chen Zhijie, a local officer sent by his captain to assist them. Meanwhile, back at the railway compound, Niu Dali returned home, appearing affluent and dressed in fashionable clothing, speaking with a Guangdong accent, which drew the attention and curiosity of his neighbors. He chatted with Mrs. Cai and Mrs. Lu, showing off his attire and explaining he bought it from another region.

In Shenzhen, Ma Kui, Wang Xin, and Officer Jie began their investigation. They discovered that Rat and San Tou Qiang communicated via a specific public telephone booth on Guangping Street. They spoke with the booth owner, Mr. Wang, who confirmed San Tou Qiang's routine of visiting the booth around 6 p. m. daily to check for calls and make his own. Mr. Wang described him as a tall, large local man who claimed to be in the handbag business.

Ma Kui and Wang Xin arranged for the owner to signal them when San Tou Qiang arrived while they waited nearby. At the same time, Niu Dali took Yao Yuling to an upscale restaurant. He demonstrated his apparent wealth by insisting on a reserved table and ordering an elaborate meal, describing it as a display of being steady and rich.

He expressed his intention to return to marry Yao Yuling after earning enough money within a year or so, but Yao Yuling's response was noncommittal, urging him only to be careful in his business dealings.
