Ma Kui returned home from his trip to Hacheng and found Shen Xiuping helping look after his young son, Ma Jian. He expressed his sincere gratitude to Shen Xiuping, acknowledging that he wouldn't be able to leave the house otherwise. Shen Xiuping brushed off his thanks, saying she enjoyed spending time with Ma Jian. Ma Kui assured her she could count on him if she ever needed help. Ma Jian then left with his father, saying goodbye to Auntie Shen.

Entering his home, Ma Kui immediately spotted a pair of sunglasses on the table. Recognizing them, he knew Wang Xin had been there and given them to his daughter, Ma Yan. He confronted Ma Yan, who initially claimed a colleague had lent them. Ma Kui saw through the lie and grew angry, telling Ma Yan to stop being hostile toward Wang Xin just because he gave her glasses.

In his frustration, Ma Kui revealed that Wang Xin had been in serious danger, implying he was lucky to have survived. Ma Yan, hearing this, pressed her father for details, but he became evasive and told her to go take a shower. Later, Ma Yan learned more about the dangerous incident. She understood that Wang Xin had called her immediately after the life-threatening encounter, needing to hear her voice for reassurance.

Ma Kui, realizing Wang Xin's deep reliance on Ma Yan, was furious and strictly forbade her from having any relationship with him. Ma Yan, however, refused to accept his command. Meanwhile, Yao Yuling ran into Wang Xin as he was heading home. She congratulated him on his return to Ningyang and commented on his new bicycle. Wang Xin, appearing tired, gave brief responses, mentioning that police work was interesting and he needed to shower, quickly excusing himself and leaving.

Later, Niu Dali found Yao Yuling, excited that he had bought tickets for a movie they had planned to see. Yao Yuling, however, told him she was too tired and wanted to cancel, leaving Niu Dali disappointed despite his efforts. A commendation meeting was held for the railroad police, where Ma Kui and Wang Xin were honored for their actions in the Hacheng case. The leader praised their bravery in confronting a dangerous criminal and rescuing a child hostage.

When asked to speak, Ma Kui deferred to Wang Xin. Wang Xin gave a somewhat disjointed account of the pursuit and rescue, describing traveling day and night, staking out the suspect, the chase, and the confrontation. Ma Kui interrupted to point out the flaws in Wang Xin's explanation and noted that killing the suspect had cut off investigative leads.

The leader acknowledged Wang Xin's contribution but, echoing Ma Kui's sentiment, cautioned him against arrogance and emphasized that he still had much to learn to become a fully qualified railroad detective. Despite the criticism, the leader announced that Wang Xin was being officially recognized as a role model for the police force. Wang Yongge prepared a celebratory dinner for Wang Xin, proud of his son's achievement.

He questioned Wang Xin about the incident, stressing the importance of using his judgment and strictly following his mentor Ma Kui's instructions in dangerous situations. Ma Yan joined them, having secretly brought a bottle of Ma Kui's valuable 20-year-old liquor to share with Wang Xin. Wang Yongge, uncomfortable with the stolen liquor, soon excused himself, feigning drunkenness.

Left alone, Ma Yan insisted Wang Xin drink the liquor with her and pressed him to explain why he had called her after the dangerous encounter. After some hesitation, Wang Xin admitted that he had been terrified after facing death and needed to hear her voice to calm his nerves. Ma Yan teased him about being emotional but was clearly touched, pouring him more wine as they continued talking late into the evening.

The next day, Yao Yuling arrived at Wang Xin's place with a bowl of longevity noodles she had made for him, congratulating him on being a role model. Ma Yan was openly jealous of the gesture. Yao Yuling stayed to chat and accepted a drink from the liquor. Ma Yan, wanting to finish the prized bottle, encouraged everyone to drink quickly. Yao Yuling drank too much and soon became noticeably drunk.

She stumbled as she left, and Niu Dali met her outside, expressing concern. Irritated by his attention, she reacted impatiently when Niu Dali asked if they could be together if he became a train driver, simply telling him to "fight for" his goal and leaving him crestfallen. Wang Xin was rewarded with a television by the police office. He brought it home and intended for it to be for Ma Yan.

Ma Kui vehemently objected to Ma Yan keeping it, demanding she return it immediately. Ma Yan refused, asserting her right to accept the gift from Wang Xin and declaring she would move it to her room. Ma Kui became enraged, threatening to smash the television, but Ma Yan stood her ground, promising to protect it and never forgive him if he did. Later, Wang Yongge spoke to Wang Xin, initially misunderstanding that the TV was a gift for Ma Kui.

Wang Xin clarified it was for Ma Yan. Recognizing the depth of feeling between them, Wang Yongge advised Wang Xin to give up on Ma Yan, stating that Ma Kui's opposition meant their marriage was impossible. However, Wang Xin was resolute, vowing he would marry only Ma Yan. In the courtyard, neighbors gathered to watch television together, enjoying a show called "Huo Yuanjia" on the new set Wang Xin and Ma Yan had placed there.

Niu Dali even helped position the antenna for better reception. Meanwhile, Yao Yuling stayed home. Later that night, Niu Dali arrived at her door with a brand new television for her. He explained he knew she preferred to watch alone rather than with the crowded group in the courtyard. He helped her set up the TV in her room. As it flickered to life, Yao Yuling smiled, and Niu Dali commented on how beautiful her smile was.

At Ma Kui's home, his old friend Peng Mingjie visited with his daughter, Lili, who was starting university in Ningyang. Ma Kui and Ma Yan warmly welcomed them and hosted a dinner. Over drinks, a nostalgic Ma Kui insisted on recounting a life-saving event from 1972, when he was seriously ill during labor reform.

He tearfully recalled how Peng Mingjie, the farm captain at the time, had selflessly carried him over ten miles through the mountains to the county hospital, saving his life. He emphasized the profound bond of friendship and gratitude he felt. Peng Mingjie humbly downplayed his actions, saying anyone would have done the same. Ma Kui instructed Ma Yan to honor Peng Mingjie and treat Lili, who was younger, as a cherished sister.

Ma Yan and Lili quickly became close, agreeing to treat each other like true sisters. Lili happily accepted Ma Kui's invitation to consider his home her own while she was in Ningyang. After dinner, Ma Yan and Lili retired to Ma Yan's room to chat privately, bonding further. Lili admired a knitted kettle cover Ma Yan had made and expressed her desire to learn knitting from her.
