My Mr. Mermaid Episode 34 Recap
> My Mr. Mermaid Recap
Lin Zi informed Ouyang Heng that Lin Sang's condition was medically termed "memory dissociation," where patients subconsciously avoid unpleasant memories. He explained that Lin Sang had no recollection of events after the age of sixteen. Lin Zi emphasized that Lin Sang's awakening was a miracle, but a blood clot remained in her brain, like a ticking time bomb, which could cause a relapse at any time. Therefore, they must keep her calm and avoid deliberately trying to restore her memories.
Ouyang Heng was stunned by this news, unable to believe Lin Sang had forgotten him and their high school days. Suppressing his sorrow, he told Lin Zi that as long as Lin Sang was awake, it didn't matter if she had forgotten him. He suspected Tang Yibai was the reason for Lin Sang's memory loss, a suspicion Lin Zi agreed with. They resolved to keep Lin Sang and Tang Yibai apart and avoid mentioning Tang Yibai.
Lin Sang, now awake, only remembered her brother, Lin Zi, and had no recollection of Ouyang Heng, despite his attentive care. She told Ouyang that a blurred face frequently appeared in her mind, though she couldn’t discern who it was. Lin Zi and Ouyang Heng, knowing it was Tang Yibai, fell silent and quickly diverted the conversation to prevent her from overthinking. That night, as Lin Zi conversed with his sister, he was filled with unprecedented joy.
Lin Sang cheerfully mentioned hearing her brother’s voice while in a coma and remembered only one name: Yun Duo. Lin Zi, momentarily startled, quickly composed himself and claimed Yun Duo was someone he liked. Delighted, Lin Sang insisted that Lin Zi tell her their story, which he lovingly agreed to do. Ouyang Heng consistently visited Lin Sang, recounting their joyous past. Lin Sang initially enjoyed these stories, but a sudden, inexplicable sadness overwhelmed her, and she apologized for forgetting him.
Ouyang Heng smiled, assuring her that he didn't care if she remembered him, only that she was alive and well. He believed they could create new, beautiful memories together. Later, Lin Sang unexpectedly appeared at Yun Duo’s company, startling Yun Duo, who quickly brought her back to the hospital for safety. Lin Sang, unaware of her amnesia, innocently assumed Yun Duo was Lin Zi’s girlfriend. Yun Duo also accidentally mentioned Tang Yibai's name.
Lin Zi then took Yun Duo aside, explaining Lin Sang’s memory loss and the delicate nature of her condition. He requested Yun Duo not to mention Tang Yibai’s name around Lin Sang and, to maintain Lin Sang’s emotional stability, asked her to play along with Lin Sang’s misunderstanding that Yun Duo and Lin Zi were a couple. Yun Duo, though hesitant, eventually agreed. Meanwhile, a worried Yangyang visited the doctor concerning Qi Ruifeng’s worsening shoulder injury.
The doctor, unable to disclose specific details without the patient’s consent, hinted that without further intensive treatment, Qi Ruifeng’s current competition might be his last. Yangyang also secretly spoke with Coach Yuan about Qi Ruifeng's injury. Later, Yangyang confronted Qi Ruifeng, urging him to get surgery. Qi Ruifeng, however, refused, playfully boasting that as "the unrivaled in the universe, the strongest man in this world," a minor injury couldn't stop him.
He also explained that he and Tang Yibai had promised to stand together on the Dream Cup awards podium, an opportunity they missed four years ago due to Tang Yibai's suspension, and he didn't want to miss it again. Furthermore, as this was his last competition representing Nantida University before graduation, he was determined not to give up for the sake of his teammates and coaches.
Frustrated by his cavalier attitude, Yangyang accused him of self-sacrificing for the team, teammates, school honor, and Coach Yuan, neglecting his own well-being. She implored him to consider her worry. Qi Ruifeng apologized for upsetting her and thanked her for always being by his side, promising he would be fine and asking for this one last time to be willful. One evening, after training, Tang Yibai called Yun Duo to invite her to dinner.
Yun Duo declined, citing work, as she was at the hospital looking after Lin Sang, whom Lin Zi had asked her to watch while he was out. Tang Yibai, undeterred, playfully demanded a "kiss goodbye" over the phone, threatening to come to her company otherwise. Yun Duo playfully blew him a kiss through the phone, which satisfied him. While Yun Duo was with Lin Sang, Lin Sang eagerly shared her drawings that depicted blurry scenes from her past.
As she concentrated, a headache struck, and fragmented memories from four years ago flashed through her mind, causing her to lose consciousness. When Lin Sang awoke, she seemed disoriented. She drew images from her dreams and recalled being called "Little One," which brought on a wave of profound sadness and tears. The following day, she searched for Yun Duo online, finding numerous reports about Yun Duo covering Tang Yibai.
She clicked on an article featuring Tang Yibai, and suddenly, the blurred face in her memories became horrifyingly clear: it was Tang Yibai. As Lin Sang looked for Tang Yibai outside his hospital room, she eagerly announced that she knew he wouldn't come to her, so she came to him. Ouyang Heng then approached Tang Yibai, gently suggesting he stay to keep Lin Sang company, a request Tang Yibai agreed to.
Lin Zi then pulled Tang Yibai aside, revealing that Lin Sang had been in a coma since the car accident four years ago and had only recently woken up. Tang Yibai was shocked, asking why he had been kept in the dark for so many years.
Lin Zi angrily retorted that Tang Yibai had no right to ask, blaming him for Lin Sang's condition, stating that four years ago, during an investigation following Tang Yibai's incident, reporters had questioned Lin Sang's involvement, causing everyone to blame her because of Tang Yibai. A flashback showed this past confrontation where investigators probed Lin Sang's role.
Ouyang Heng furiously accused Tang Yibai of doubting Lin Sang and using her, while Lin Zi tried to mediate, telling Lin Sang to explain herself to the investigators. Ouyang Heng then declared that once Lin Sang remembered everything, Tang Yibai would no longer be able to falsely accuse her.
Returning to the present, Lin Zi warned Tang Yibai that if he couldn't reciprocate Lin Sang’s feelings, he must not soften his heart, or Lin Zi wouldn't forgive him if she got hurt again. He demanded Tang Yibai never appear before Lin Sang again. Yun Duo returned home late to find Tang Yibai waiting for her.
He had prepared a thoughtful late-night snack, but despite his care, Yun Duo felt an unfounded fear of losing him, her thoughts drifting to Lin Sang. She told Tang Yibai that she had seen "Little One's true face" through the camera footage, and tentatively asked if "Little One" liked him. Tang Yibai, flustered, quickly clarified that he had no romantic feelings for "Little One" and only saw her as a sister, easing some of Yun Duo’s anxiety.
He held her tightly, and she clung to his embrace. The next day, Yun Duo confided in Cheng Mei about her conflicted emotions. Cheng Mei shrewdly analyzed Yun Duo's feelings: she didn't dislike Lin Sang, even pitying her, but Lin Sang was undeniably a love rival, and Yun Duo was unsure of Tang Yibai and Lin Sang's past relationship.
Yun Duo admitted she felt "bad" for secretly hoping Lin Sang wouldn't remember Tang Yibai and that she had tried to test Tang Yibai's feelings. Cheng Mei admonished Yun Duo for being foolish, asserting that if Tang Yibai truly liked Lin Sang, he wouldn't have ignored her for four years. She urged Yun Duo to trust herself and Tang Yibai more. Emotionally, Yun Duo asked if they could still be good friends.
Cheng Mei, acknowledging her past anger, reassured Yun Duo of her unwavering loyalty and willingness to always be there to listen and advise her, restoring their friendship. She also affirmed that Yun Duo, as Tang Yibai's favorite person, was far superior to Lin Sang. Later, after much internal deliberation where she resolved to overcome her fears of expressing vulnerability, Yun Duo bravely told Tang Yibai how unhappy she had been, suppressing her feelings to avoid burdening him.
She admitted her resentment towards his shared past with Lin Sang and his hesitant silence whenever Lin Sang was mentioned, which made her feel excluded from a secret. She confessed to disliking her own jealousy and insecurity, fearing he might prefer Lin Sang. Tang Yibai apologized for causing her distress, appreciating her honesty and promising that there will be no more secrets between them. He also admitted that her jealousy secretly made him happy.
Later, Ouyang Heng recounted details of a past birthday celebration to Lin Sang, recalling how she playfully smeared cake icing on Tang Yibai, himself, and Qi Ruifeng. He reminded her of her birthday wish: for everyone to remain close friends forever. Ouyang Heng, saddened, apologized for not being able to fulfill that wish.
