Episode 1 Recap
A group of girls gathered as Zhuo'an explained a scientific fact: if the sun were to stop shining, people on Earth wouldn't know for eight minutes, meaning the warmth they currently felt was merely an illusion. Yan Ze, a common-looking girl with an average academic record, often felt inferior and troubled by her ordinariness.
She fantasized about becoming pretty, smart, and truly awesome, and wished to share her story of youth, friendship, and love, particularly the "eight-minute warmth" of her own life. She often dreamt of Ji Xiao, who was mild, gentle, smart, and brilliant, radiating elegance with every move, truly the Prince Charming of the school. Yan Ze wondered how much effort it would take for someone as ordinary as her to catch up to him and make him notice her existence.
During the school's annual arts festival, Yan Ze, as class monitor, was left to manage various mishaps for her class's performance. As Ji Xiao passed by, he complimented her, saying she looked beautiful that day, and encouraged her, stating that Class 3 was counting on her. His words greatly boosted her spirits. Meanwhile, He Xinliang was backstage looking for Ji Xiao when he witnessed Yan Ze accidentally being struck by a red flag prop.
Despite her injury, she stoically prepared to go on stage. Yan Ze's hand swelled severely, causing distress to her teacher, Mr. Zheng, and her friend Gu Xiye. With the performance imminent, Yan Ze had no choice but to let Gu Xiye take over as the chorus conductor. As Gu Xiye performed, Yan Ze noticed subtle gestures between her and Ji Xiao on stage. Backstage, Yan Ze's parents arrived, initially upset about her performance not being as planned.
However, upon seeing her badly swollen hand, they became concerned and instructed her to return home for the weekend to recover. Later, backstage, Yan Ze encountered He Xinliang. To defend another student who had confessed to He Xinliang and been rudely rejected, Yan Ze intervened loudly. Her impassioned exchange with He Xinliang about his arrogance and the girl's feelings was overheard by many, leading them to mistakenly believe that Yan Ze herself had made a confession to He Xinliang.
He Xinliang later mocked her, asking her to repeat her "creative love confession." Outside the auditorium, Yan Ze's younger brother, Yan Hai, was captivated by Liu Xichuan, the school's "babe" who had just sung on stage. He waited for her and approached, complimenting her singing. Her brief smile left him smitten, and he excitedly told his friend he believed Liu Xichuan liked him. Later, while washing hands, Gu Xiye asked Yan Ze if she really liked He Xinliang.
Yan Ze vehemently denied it, calling it a "gigantic misunderstanding." Gu Xiye, offering to keep a secret, said Yan Ze could confide in her if she truly liked the boy. Angered by the persistent misunderstanding, Yan Ze left. Back in her dorm room, her roommates were performing a New Moon wish ritual, which they claimed was very effective.
Yan Ze reluctantly joined in, wishing for "the freak He Xinliang to burn in hell" and for "Ji Xiao to notice my existence." After their dorm supervisor, Mrs. Sun, left, the roommates excitedly gossiped. They revealed that He Xinliang and Ji Xiao were both "school hunks" at PHB Junior High, with He Xinliang being a top student, neck and neck with Ji Xiao in academics, and whose parents were doctors at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
He was also reportedly excellent at basketball. Yan Ze, still fuming from her encounter, interjected, asserting that He Xinliang was not a good person, dismissing their admiration. The next morning, Yan Ze found He Xinliang occupying her seat, determined to remain Ji Xiao's desk-mate. After a brief internal fantasy of Ji Xiao choosing her, Yan Ze loudly objected to He Xinliang's plan. He Xinliang, in turn, teased her, asking if she was nervous about being separated from Ji Xiao.
Yan Ze defiantly told him to get up, stating she would not move and challenged him to do something about it. In class, He Xinliang loudly questioned if Yan Ze had a crush on Ji Xiao, which mortified her. When Ji Xiao walked in, Yan Ze immediately denied any feelings for him, pulling He Xinliang aside to scold him for spreading rumors.
Later, while washing her hands with Gu Xiye, Yan Ze expressed her intense dislike for He Xinliang, vowing to "teach him a lesson." Gu Xiye eagerly offered to help her scheme against him. Yan Ze attempted two pranks: first, by confronting him about not handing in a test paper, and then by trying to get him to do cleaning duty, but both attempts failed, with Ji Xiao even stepping in to help He Xinliang with the cleaning.
When Yan Ze tried to clarify to Ji Xiao that He Xinliang was a "blabbering jerk" who spread nonsense, Ji Xiao simply asked if she would attend the semi-final debate competition on Sunday. Yan Ze, delighted by the invitation, enthusiastically confirmed she would be there to cheer them on as class monitor. He Xinliang continued to provoke Yan Ze, referring to her as someone who "trash-talked me behind my back."
In a moment of anger, Yan Ze tripped, stumbling into a clumsy bow before He Xinliang, creating an awkward scene. He Xinliang, unfazed, sarcastically asked if she was "kneeling" and if she could stand up. Ji Xiao intervened, inviting He Xinliang to sleep over at his house after dinner, to which He Xinliang playfully agreed, but only if Ji Xiao "asked" him properly.
Yan Ze then recalled Ji Xiao once calling her a "cute class monitor," which brought a mix of joy and anger as she remembered He Xinliang's recent behavior, vowing silently that he "wouldn't get away with it." Yan Hai's basketball team had an upcoming exhibition game. He suggested to his sports teacher, Han, that they change their opponents to Class 3, a class of "nerds." Han initially dismissed the idea, but the thought lingered.
Unbeknownst to them, Yan Ze had her own plan. Sneaking into the sports office, Yan Ze secretly changed the schedule to pit Class 3 against the professional school basketball team. She declared her intention was for He Xinliang to compete against professionals and lose, humiliating him in front of the entire school, so he would no longer dare to provoke her. Yan Ze mused that every day brings new people and new events, leading to unexpected surprises or even terrors.
Episode 2 Recap
Yan Ze had just finished making some modifications when Mr. Han arrived, also intending to adjust the competition schedule. Mr. Han, upon seeing the schedule, was delighted. He immediately announced to Class 3 that they would be facing Class 7 in an exhibition basketball game for the upcoming School Open Day. However, the students lacked confidence, wondering how their class, without a proper basketball team, could possibly compete against a more professional one.
He Xinliang, brimming with confidence, readily volunteered to play, and Ji Xiao stepped forward to support him, suggesting they play together. Despite their enthusiasm, few students signed up. Ji Xiao prompted Yan Ze to help recruit players for He Xinliang. When her general plea didn't work, Yan Ze started calling out specific classmates like Qin Can, Pan Zhiheng, and Zhang Xu.
The students, however, came up with various excuses, from unfinished math homework to simply disliking sports or even jokingly claiming a male equivalent of a "period." He Xinliang became so frustrated that he nearly argued with his classmates. Ji Xiao then pulled He Xinliang out of the classroom, encouraging him to calm down and assuring him they would find a solution together. Yan Ze came up with a clever idea: showing the anime "Slam Dunk" to ignite the students' passion.
Taking advantage of their newfound excitement, He Xinliang quickly called for sign-ups, and indeed, many students responded enthusiastically. Shortly after, Mr. Han walked in, visibly angry to see "Slam Dunk" playing. He chastised Yan Ze, who was about to admit her mistake, but Ji Xiao promptly stood up and took responsibility, deeply moving Yan Ze. Later, Yan Ze invited her brother, Yan Hai, home for dinner.
During their meal, Yan Hai expressed admiration for Liu Xichuan, who he knew as the head of the Sports Department. Seizing this opportunity, Yan Ze offered Liu Xichuan's contact information as a bribe, asking Yan Hai to relentlessly guard He Xinliang during the basketball game, ensuring he had no chance to score. Yan Hai readily agreed. He Xinliang began organizing basketball practices, with Gu Xiye diligently taking notes.
At the cafeteria, Mr. Han ran into Ms. Gu, who was confident that Class 7, with their specialized basketball students, would easily win the upcoming game. Mr. Han concurred, expressing his certainty. After Ms. Gu left, Mr. Han was seen meticulously planning, instructing players like Guo Chao and Chang Ping to "mark" He Xinliang, while also worrying that Yan Hai might disobey his instructions during the game. That evening, He Xinliang was still practicing late on the basketball court.
Ji Xiao advised him to conserve his energy for the official game the next day and go home to rest. Ji Xiao understood that basketball was He Xinliang's true passion, and he wanted to achieve something to show his parents.
He Xinliang confided his frustration, unable to understand why his parents disapproved of such a great sport, especially after he secretly tried to change his high school application to a sports school, only to end up as a top student in Yangming's key class. Ji Xiao encouraged He Xinliang, suggesting that if they played well together, things might take a positive turn.
The next day, before the game, Class 3 players were still engrossed in their studies, while Class 7's morale was high. However, Yan Hai was unexpectedly listed as a substitute by Mr. Han, completely derailing Yan Ze's plan to use him against He Xinliang. As the game began, it was intensely competitive. Class 3 managed to score several consecutive points, causing Mr. Han to become agitated.
Feeling his team was at a disadvantage, he quickly called a timeout, giving urgent instructions and conspicuously keeping Yan Hai on the bench. He also instructed the referee to make biased calls. This infuriated Yan Ze, who, using her phone to record, started listing specific instances of "bad calls" by the referee, complete with timestamps and foul descriptions. Mr. Zheng, the Director, caught her with the phone and, enraged, ordered her to his office later.
Meanwhile, the classmates cheered for Yan Ze, praising her eloquence. Seeing the unfairness on the court, Yan Hai defied Mr. Han's orders and joined the game, single-handedly turning the tide of the match. After the game, Mr. Zheng punished Yan Ze for bringing her phone to school by making her clean the entire court and all the toilets outside.
Yan Hai, noticing Liu Xichuan in the stands, ostentatiously showed off, claiming he won the game all by himself, leaving Yan Ze to clean alone. Gu Xiye kindly offered to help Yan Ze, and although He Xinliang initially pretended not to care, he secretly wanted to assist. He stepped in to defend Gu Xiye from other girls, subtly insulting them by calling them "long-lived girls" (implying they were not beautiful), which made Gu Xiye happy.
As He Xinliang retrieved his jacket near Yan Ze, she, mistaking his presence for gratitude, preemptively told him not to thank her. She admitted she had initially wanted to embarrass him, but declared that while she could accept a fair loss, she would never tolerate losing due to biased refereeing. She firmly stated that only she was allowed to "bully" her own classmates. Annoyed, He Xinliang took his jacket and left without a word.
Later, Mr. Han was scolded by the Director, Mr. Zheng. The two teachers shifted blame for the biased calls and the altered match schedule. They soon realized that Yan Ze and Gu Xiye might have been responsible for tampering with the document. When Mr. Zheng summoned Yan Ze and Gu Xiye to his office, Yan Ze insisted on going alone, telling Gu Xiye to stay behind.
In the office, Yan Ze fully took responsibility for changing the schedule, despite Mr. Zheng's angry comparison of her actions to a "Princess Pearl" drama. Just as Mr. Zheng was about to escalate her punishment, Ji Xiao opportunely entered, feigning a need to ask a question, thereby allowing Yan Ze to leave the office. Meanwhile, He Xinliang, recalling his father's admonition to abandon basketball and focus on scientific research, encountered Yan Ze happily eating cotton candy. Finding her endearing, he offered her a tissue.
Episode 3 Recap
Dejected after his family disapproved of his basketball aspirations, He Xinliang walked alone until he spotted Yan Ze eating cotton candy. He offered her a tissue, which prompted Yan Ze to jokingly accuse him of stalking her. However, seeing his low spirits, Yan Ze dropped the teasing and began to comfort him. She praised his impressive basketball skills, calling him "The James of Yangming," and inquired why he no longer played.
He Xinliang explained that his parents had forbidden it due to his excellent academic performance. Yan Ze then suggested a clever solution: he should secretly approach Mr. Han to become a practice partner for the basketball team, while simultaneously assuring Mr. Zheng that he would not officially join the team and would dedicate himself to his studies, aiming for China's top universities. This way, he could train during self-study periods.
He Xinliang was delighted by the idea, feeling he had gained a new understanding of Yan Ze. During math class, Yan Ze, lost in thought, drifted off to sleep. Upon waking, she found a note with two "thank you" messages on her desk. She believed one was from Gu Xiye and suspected the other was from Ji Xiao.
Determined to prove Ji Xiao's authorship, she attempted various schemes, like trying to get the last chicken leg in the cafeteria, or orchestrating a class switch from P. E. to English. However, each attempt was foiled by He Xinliang's unintentional interference. Later that evening in the dormitory, Yan Ze questioned Gu Xiye about her note. Gu Xiye explained she was thanking Yan Ze for helping He Xinliang establish the basketball team.
She then surprised Yan Ze by confessing her long-held affection for He Xinliang, stating she had liked him since middle school. Yan Ze expressed confusion, pointing out that she and He Xinliang attended different middle schools. Gu Xiye’s reminder then made Yan Ze recall that she might have known He Xinliang from much earlier. Mr. Zheng summoned Yan Ze to his office, tasking her with organizing classmates to attend the semi-final debate competition on Sunday.
Yan Ze confidently accepted the responsibility. Back in the dorm, she used all her persuasive powers, including sharing new gossip about XinXun, to rally her female classmates, who eventually agreed to attend. At the debate, Yan Ze spotted He Xinliang and tried to make him sit with their class. He Xinliang initially resisted, insisting he was only there to support Ji Xiao, but Yan Ze physically pulled him into the group.
This interaction was observed by Gu Xiye, who looked noticeably displeased. The debate, chaired by Gu Yu, centered on whether courage or wisdom triumphs in confrontation, with Class 3 arguing for wisdom. Ji Xiao and Gu Xiye’s perfectly coordinated arguments left their opponents speechless, drawing an excited reaction from Yan Ze, who grabbed He Xinliang’s hand to cheer. Gu Xiye, witnessing this, grew even more disheartened.
Following Class 3’s victory, many classmates commented on Ji Xiao and Gu Xiye’s excellent partnership, speculating that they were a couple. This left Yan Ze feeling down, a change in mood that He Xinliang did not miss. Yan Ze then went on stage to present ribbons to the winning team. While she freely hugged the other male debaters, her private feelings for Ji Xiao made her hesitate with him, until he initiated a hug, catching her off guard.
That night, back in her dorm, Yan Ze was still pondering the mystery of the second note and devised a new plan to uncover its writer. The next day, she proposed that every student write a sincere thank-you card to Mr. Zheng for his upcoming birthday, with a mandatory "thank you" written on each. As Yan Ze was explaining this to the class, Mr. Zheng and Ji Xiao walked in.
Yan Ze tried to hide behind the podium, but Mr. Zheng saw her. She feigned a cough to conceal a lollipop, which amused the class but angered Mr. Zheng. He confiscated her lollipop, scolded her for setting a bad example as class monitor, and sent her out to stand in the hallway. Soon after, He Xinliang deliberately ate instant noodles in class, resulting in him also being sent out.
Outside, He Xinliang mocked Yan Ze, and their playful bickering escalated, disrupting the class. Mr. Zheng had to stop the lesson, come out, and sternly reprimand them both. As punishment, he ordered them to clean the entire floor that evening. After school, Ji Xiao approached Yan Ze, asking if she realized her mistakes. Confused, Yan Ze asked what she had done wrong. Ji Xiao revealed that he knew she had secretly altered the schedule for the basketball exhibition game.
Yan Ze immediately swore she would never do it again. Ji Xiao also pointed out her misbehavior in class, such as eating candy and playing during her hallway punishment, to which Yan Ze readily agreed to mend her ways. Yan Ze remarked that Ji Xiao was starting to sound like a member of the Self-Management Committee.
Ji Xiao clarified that he simply disliked them, explaining that they had repeatedly tried to recruit her to boost their popularity, knowing that no one could bear to be stern with her. He added that he was glad she had always refused them. Left alone, Yan Ze reflected on what it means to like someone, imagining it as vividly intense as the summer sun, as profound as winter snow, and as fresh as the first ray of dawn.
Episode 4 Recap
After finishing their cleanup duties, He Xinliang offered to treat Yan Ze to a meal in gratitude for the tactic diagram she had made for him. Yan Ze, however, was confused, as she remembered Gu Xiye was the one who had secretly placed the diagram in He Xinliang's locker. She quickly clarified this to He Xinliang, who, after a moment of embarrassment, teased Yan Ze that her handwriting was not good enough for such a diagram anyway.
He Xinliang then changed the terms of his offer, asking Yan Ze to confess something to him instead. He directly asked if she had feelings for Ji Xiao. Yan Ze firmly denied it, but He Xinliang remained unconvinced, pointing out her melodramatic reactions and previous behaviors, including getting caught with a lollipop. Yan Ze retorted that every girl in school liked Ji Xiao and it was none of He Xinliang's business.
He Xinliang then offered to help Yan Ze find out if Ji Xiao's feelings were mutual, leveraging his close relationship with Ji Xiao. The only condition was that Yan Ze would owe him a significant favor, to be repaid no matter what. After a brief hesitation, Yan Ze agreed, requesting only that he be subtle. As Yan Ze left, He Xinliang was left with a pang of sadness.
Yan Ze and Gu Xiye returned home, where their parents were preparing to take them shopping. During the car ride, Yan Ze's mother playfully chided her for her lack of studying compared to Gu Xiye. At the clothing store, Yan Ze's mother tried to get her to try on a more feminine dress, but Yan Ze felt it didn't suit her. Gu Xiye looked lovely in a similar dress.
While the girls were trying on clothes, Gu Xiye asked Yan Ze if He Xinliang would like someone like her. Yan Ze was puzzled by Gu Xiye's affection for He Xinliang, warning her that he could be particularly cruel when rejecting people. She also reminded Gu Xiye that He Xinliang had a past connection with "that person." Gu Xiye responded that "that person is gone." Yan Ze's mother then returned with a short-sleeve shirt more to Yan Ze's liking.
Back at school, Yan Ze was collecting thank-you cards for Mr. Zheng's upcoming birthday. She noticed Ji Xiao hadn't submitted one and, apologizing for not notifying him earlier, asked him to write one immediately. As Ji Xiao wrote, Yan Ze secretly compared his handwriting to a previous note, confirming her suspicion that he had written it, which filled her with delight. She complimented his beautiful handwriting.
Ji Xiao then offered to get her some hot water, making Yan Ze even more excited. However, her hopes were dashed when a different classmate later brought her cup, explaining that Gu Xiye had called Ji Xiao away to discuss the debate competition. Later, in the dormitory, Yan Ze discovered her roommate, Zhai, had ingeniously crafted cheat sheets on a water bottle, carved into pencils, and even written on her leg.
Yan Ze confiscated and destroyed all the cheat sheets, warning Zhai about the risks and stressing that teachers were always one step ahead. She also pointed out that cheating wouldn't help in the long run. When Zhai expressed difficulty in memorizing, Yan Ze offered to study with her, suggesting they focus on English vocabulary and essay samples for the upcoming exam.
On the day of the English exam, He Xinliang approached Yan Ze, asking if she had seen his thank-you card. Yan Ze said she hadn't, leaving He Xinliang visibly disappointed. Moments after the exam began, an invigilator found a thank-you card on Yan Ze's desk and called Mr. Zheng over. Mr. Zheng suggested there might be a misunderstanding, as Yan Ze was usually a good student.
The invigilator insisted Mr. Zheng handle it himself, and he led Yan Ze out of the classroom. While they were outside, He Xinliang noticed the English essay topic was to write a thank-you letter to a teacher. Realizing the unfortunate coincidence, he rushed out to explain. He told Mr. Zheng that Yan Ze had organized the thank-you cards for his birthday, and he, as an English teacher, thought an English card would be most appropriate.
He apologized for the misunderstanding, taking full responsibility and assuring Mr. Zheng that Yan Ze's intentions were pure. A pleased Mr. Zheng then sent both of them back to finish the exam. After the exam, Yan Ze and He Xinliang were required to report to the Self-Management Committee for a record of the incident. Yan Ze was surprised to find Ji Xiao in charge of their case. She asked why he had suddenly joined the committee after refusing multiple invitations.
Ji Xiao cryptically replied, "Because sacrifice makes deals." Yan Ze was confused by his answer. Ji Xiao then clarified the forms, noting that He Xinliang was the rule-breaker for writing the note, and Yan Ze was merely a witness. He promised to ensure the records would only be for internal keeping and not affect their permanent academic files. After the paperwork, He Xinliang stopped Yan Ze, asking why she had tried to protect him during the exam.
Yan Ze deflected the question. He Xinliang explained that he was simply taking responsibility for his own actions, as the card was his. He then added that he now owed her a favor, before he left to report to the basketball team. As he walked away, Yan Ze quietly thanked him. Later, walking home with Gu Xiye, Yan Ze overheard other students discussing the final math problem, with one confidently stating the answer was "one."
Gu Xiye also confirmed the answer was "one," much to Yan Ze's delight, as she admitted she had simply guessed "one" to avoid leaving the page blank. Upon arriving home, they found Yan Hai visiting unexpectedly. He had devoured all the dinner, leaving none for them. Yan Ze's parents quickly came up with an excuse to go to the mall for dinner, taking Gu Xiye with them and leaving Yan Ze to entertain Yan Hai.
Annoyed, Yan Ze gave Yan Hai Liu Xichuan's contact information, urging him to leave. At the restaurant, Yan Ze's parents, while appearing to enjoy their meal, were observed by Gu Xiye to be rushing through their food and discussing taking leftovers home for Yan Ze, highlighting their concern despite their actions. Youthful years often find individuals hesitant to express deep feelings, leaving many unspoken emotions concealed within a simple "thank you," making it difficult to know where to begin.
Episode 5 Recap
Yan Hai enthusiastically announced that he had finally coupled up with someone in a game, proclaiming, "Let's make a team and be second to none in the server." Someone cautioned him about using a female name and the potential for the other player to request a video chat. Yan Hai decided to clarify this upfront with his new partner.
To his surprise, the other player also disliked video chats, which made Yan Hai wonder if there were any guys who didn't "chase a girl" in the game. He then proceeded to play. Meanwhile, at home, Yan Ze was having a lie-in during the holidays. Her mother urged her to get up, commenting that it was almost 11:00 AM and she shouldn't always have a lie-in.
Shortly after, He Xinliang called Yan Ze, playfully trying to get her to "call him daddy." Annoyed, Yan Ze threatened to hang up, but He Xinliang quickly caught her attention by mentioning Ji Xiao. He then revealed that Ji Xiao would be on the second floor of the city library at 2:00 PM the next day to study, instantly erasing all of Yan Ze's sleepiness.
The following day, Yan Ze and He Xinliang went to the city library, where Yan Ze "coincidentally" met Ji Xiao. The three of them studied until evening. He Xinliang eventually fell asleep, but a song began playing, drawing Yan Ze's attention. Ji Xiao, noticing her interest, told her the song was called "The Time" and offered her an earbud to listen with him.
The moment was interrupted when He Xinliang suddenly woke up, asking what time it was and where he was. Realizing it was 9:00 PM and the library was about to close, he suggested they all head home, breaking the quiet atmosphere. That evening, Gu Xiye called Yan Ze, clearly upset after seeing a photo He Xinliang posted of Yan Ze on his QQ Zone.
Gu Xiye directly asked if Yan Ze liked He Xinliang, mentioning a supposed confession on December 9th and their recent closeness. Yan Ze vehemently denied any romantic interest, explaining it was a misunderstanding and that He Xinliang "always bothers me" and "picks on me." She went on to describe herself as someone "who triumphs by inner beauty, not by exam records," adding that He Xinliang, with his "simple mind," could never "see my inner beauty."
Gu Xiye reassured her, saying, "In my eyes, you're good at everything," and jokingly suggested they "dump He Xinliang and be with me." Yan Ze then proposed that they go to the library together the next day, as "they are in the library a lot recently," to which Gu Xiye happily agreed. The following day, the four of them were studying at the library.
When Yan Ze fell asleep and started drooling, He Xinliang noticed Ji Xiao and Gu Xiye creating a makeshift shade to block the sun for her. Later, when He Xinliang stepped away, Yan Ze seized the chance to sit next to Ji Xiao and offered him an earbud, but He Xinliang suddenly reappeared and snatched it away, mocking her music taste as "awful."
When He Xinliang announced he was going to buy food, Yan Ze quickly suggested that Gu Xiye accompany him to buy something for her, discreetly telling Gu Xiye to "seize the opportunity." While they were out, He Xinliang asked Gu Xiye about her preferences, and she enthusiastically listed bubble tea, Raccoon instant noodles, and spicy strips. However, her spirits dampened when He Xinliang immediately followed up by asking if Yan Ze's taste was similar.
Upon their return, Gu Xiye brought a warm bubble tea to Ji Xiao. Back home, Yan Ze poured out her frustration to Gu Xiye, complaining, "He Xinliang is very annoying. He always takes advantage of me and picks on me." Gu Xiye, feeling uneasy, responded by telling Yan Ze, "Don't go there if you don't like it."
Yan Ze tried to soften her earlier remarks, stating that she "wasn't that mean" and it was "just a casual observation," even adding, "In fact, He Xinliang is a good boy." However, after that conversation, Yan Ze stopped going to the library. When He Xinliang noticed her absence, he also ceased his visits. Finally, the new semester began.
Mr. Zheng addressed the class, congratulating them that their average score was "still at the top of the grade" from the previous semester's final exams. He cautioned them not to "be too proud" and to "keep on studying hard." He then sternly warned the students "with the lowest grades" to "try their best," prompting a mortified Yan Ze to cover her face with a book.
Mr. Zheng also highlighted the upcoming Spring Games, emphasizing that "quality education" was important and that many leaders from the Bureau of Education would be visiting. He reminded Yan Ze that she "still belong[s] to Sports Department" and instructed her to "do your job under Mr. Han." He encouraged all students to "take part in the Games" to "improve your physical quality," concluding that "physical health is the most important asset."
After school, Yan Ze went to the storage room and met Liu Xichuan, the head of the Sports Department. Xichuan instructed Yan Ze and the others to gather all the registration information for the upcoming Games from their respective classes and report it back to her, so she could compile a final chart. Yan Ze inquired about the student-athletes, particularly in Class 7, asking if "they're not deemed to be the member of class, are they?"
Xichuan confirmed that student-athletes would "be dealt with separately" and she would "take care of their stuff." Yan Ze thanked her, and Xichuan, observing Yan Ze's "sweet" nature and strong "ability," even predicted she would become the "next head of SD." Xichuan then reminded Yan Ze to inform the others about the assignment before leaving. Later, Yan Hai and his friends were checking the Games schedule on the notice board.
To his dismay, Yan Hai discovered his name was listed for the Discus Team, prompting his friends to playfully mock him, suggesting it was because he "eat[s] too much." Furious, Yan Hai stormed over to the Sports Department, demanding to know "who arranged this?" and asserting that he was a "basketball player," not a discus thrower. Liu Xichuan appeared, apologized for what she called her "fault" in putting him in the wrong group, and offered to correct it.
However, upon seeing Xichuan, Yan Hai immediately lost his bravado and insisted, "No, no," that she shouldn't change it. He then comically tried to prove his suitability for discus, flexing his "strong muscles," showing his "firm legs," and striking an "up to the standard posture." He apologized for his previous outburst, claiming that "becoming an excellent discus thrower has been my lifelong pursuit" and "playing basketball is a mistake."
After he offered to lift her to prove his strength, which Xichuan declined, she allowed him to stay on the Discus Team, but urged him to leave quickly, warning him, "Hurry, or Mr. Han will kill you." Yan Ze realized she needed to collect oversized Sports Day jerseys for her class's "F4." She asked Gu Xiye to take her backpack to the classroom while she headed to the storage room, emphasizing that the jerseys would be taken quickly.
Gu Xiye commented on Yan Ze being "so thoughtful," adding, "No wonder everyone likes you." He Xinliang, having overheard, immediately questioned Yan Ze about "F4." When Yan Ze dodged the question, He Xinliang assumed it was a girls' ranking list for boys and confidently asserted that he, along with Ji Xiao, would "absolutely be on it." Yan Ze, knowing the true meaning, amusedly told him, "Yes, you're on it.
But Ji Xiao isn't," and when He Xinliang expressed surprise, she jokingly added, "because you're the number one. Ji Xiao is no match for you." Upon reaching the storage room, Yan Ze could only secure three oversized jerseys instead of the four she needed. On her way back to class, she encountered Yan Hai wearing an oversized jersey. Demanding it, she told him to "take it off and give it to. . .
to the Discus Team members in my class." When Yan Hai disdainfully referred to them as "the fat guys," Yan Ze chastised him. Yan Hai, worried about what he would wear, was told he had his Basketball Team jersey. He lamented being "laughed at by the Basketball Team" for his discus involvement, and revealed he was actually practicing shot put before discus, calling it a "secret."
Yan Ze insisted he remove the jersey, stating, "I can't let the fat guy feel neglected," and forced him to comply, prompting Yan Hai to playfully threaten to "tell my uncle." He Xinliang witnessed this entire interaction. Returning to her classroom, Yan Ze found Ms. Gu trying to persuade Gu Xiye to carry the placard at the Spring Games, citing Gu Xiye's beauty and the importance of the event for the "face of the school."
Gu Xiye expressed reluctance, saying she didn't "want to be in the limelight," and suggested Yan Ze, noting her role in the Sports Department and her familiarity with everyone. Yan Ze tried to intervene, suggesting Ms. Gu find other girls from the Entertainment Department. Just then, Ji Xiao walked by, and Ms. Gu immediately asked him to be the anchorman for the Games, praising his academic excellence, good looks, and pleasant voice, deeming him the ideal "student representative."
Ji Xiao, recalling Yan Ze's earlier playful remark about him being "no match" for He Xinliang, agreed to the role. Seeing Ji Xiao agree, Gu Xiye also conceded to Ms. Gu's request to carry the placard. Witnessing this unfold left Yan Ze feeling deeply sad and despondent. She reflected on a recent political lesson about materialism and idealism, contemplating that things like "exam results, height and family. . . exist objectively," while "character, and ability. . .
belong to subjective definition." She concluded that while she once thought "people's definition of beauty and ugliness is subjective," it was in fact "an objective thing. And it's very obvious." She realized that in her life with Gu Xiye, it was invariably the beautiful Gu Xiye who garnered attention—receiving gifts and help from others—while she, the "plain-looking girl," was overlooked.
Yan Ze concluded that a confidante "is the most important person who can teach you how to grow up," and that "learning beauty and excellence from beautiful and excellent people is your required course to the future."
Episode 6 Recap
Yan Ze watched her classmates training, feeling dejected. Mr. Han, noticing her lack of spirit, approached her. Yan Ze asked him directly if she was pretty, and then if she or Gu Xiye was more beautiful. Mr. Han avoided giving a direct answer, instead praising Gu Xiye's elegance and using her as an example for the other students. Hearing this, Yan Ze felt even more disheartened, concluding that she was just an ordinary girl.
However, He Xinliang, who had overheard their conversation, stepped in. He told Yan Ze that she was "not ordinary at all," but rather "very pretty and special," a compliment that made Yan Ze gaze at him, captivated by his smile. Meanwhile, Yan Hai continued his training with the Discus Team. Liu Xichuan brought him some clothes, which surprised and flattered him. She expressed concern that his participation in the Discus Team might interfere with his basketball training.
Yan Hai, however, dismissed her worries, explaining that there were few basketball events in the upcoming Games and confidently stating that his basketball skills were far superior to his teammates. He then confessed to Liu Xichuan that he was "willing to do anything" for her, repeating the sentiment aloud after she shyly walked away. Later, Yan Ze confronted He Xinliang, asking if his earlier compliment was sincere.
He Xinliang jokingly admitted it was "false," which made Yan Ze exclaim that she knew it. The two began playfully spraying each other with a water hose in the flowerbed. In the midst of their fun, Yan Ze accidentally splashed Ji Xiao, who was walking by. Seeing their playful interaction and being wet, Ji Xiao appeared visibly annoyed and abruptly called He Xinliang away.
Ji Xiao then asked He Xinliang for advice on how to get closer to a girl he liked. He Xinliang, teasing Ji Xiao about finally being interested in someone, suggested that one effective method was to first build a good relationship with her confidante. This suggestion immediately made Ji Xiao think of Gu Xiye, who was known to be very close to Yan Ze.
He Xinliang also casually mentioned that he got close to Yan Ze by simply "throwing some water to her." The next day, in class, Ji Xiao was seen secretly writing a note, which he quickly hid as Yan Ze approached, piquing her curiosity. Later, after class, Ji Xiao thoughtfully brought a cup of warm water to Gu Xiye. This gesture upset Yan Ze, who felt that Ji Xiao was now actively pursuing Gu Xiye.
That night, Yan Ze had a nightmare where Gu Xiye had become old and ugly. Waking up in a fright, she immediately scratched out the words "Gu Xiye will become old and ugly" from her personal notebook. Yan Ze privately acknowledged her deep envy for Gu Xiye, whom she saw as a "sun-like presence" in her high school life, casting a large shadow over her.
She admitted to often wishing Gu Xiye would become ordinary, and confessed that despite the "vicious idea," she really wanted to "be her." Arriving early in the classroom, Yan Ze found only Gu Xiye present. Yan Ze then asked Gu Xiye for help with organizing the athletes for the upcoming Games preliminaries. She presented it as an overwhelming task that she, as class monitor, couldn't handle alone due to its complexity and importance to class honor.
Gu Xiye readily agreed to assist. Shortly after, Ji Xiao entered the classroom and handed a letter to Gu Xiye, who promptly placed it in her locker. Yan Ze watched this exchange, feeling increasingly distracted and restless. She couldn't focus on her own work, her mind consumed by the letter and the recurring image of Ji Xiao and Gu Xiye together, causing her great "agony" as she stared at Gu Xiye's locker.
As Yan Ze walked past a bookstore, she recalled the place where she and Gu Xiye first met, bringing back memories of their initial friendship. She remembered Gu Xiye's kindness, like when Gu Xiye gave her the only remaining copy of a book they both wanted, and how Gu Xiye shared her snacks and toys. However, Yan Ze reflected that everything began to change after Gu Xiye's parents were arrested and Gu Xiye was adopted by Yan Ze's own family.
Yan Ze's parents, from then on, constantly held Gu Xiye up as a paragon, praising her excellence, obedience, and academic achievements while frequently reprimanding Yan Ze. This made Yan Ze feel like Gu Xiye's perpetual "foil." She also remembered her father's phone call asking her to share fruits with Gu Xiye, implying that Gu Xiye needed more.
Yan Ze realized that while many things could be shared between people, some things, like the attention and admiration she longed for, could not. As her jealousy intensified, Yan Ze hurried back to the classroom, stopping directly in front of Gu Xiye's locker. She mused on the "complicated emotion" of jealousy, describing it as a conflicting mix of admiration and resentment, a longing to be as good as someone else while simultaneously wishing they were not.
Episode 7 Recap
After basketball practice, Mr. Han approached He Xinliang, admiring his limited edition shoes and asking if he could borrow them. Mr. Han explained that Ms. Gu Yu had asked him to go jogging because she wanted to lose weight for the upcoming Games, where she would be raising a placard. He admitted he wanted to look handsome in front of her. He Xinliang, initially teasing Mr. Han about suddenly being called "buddy," eventually agreed to lend him the shoes.
However, He Xinliang was put off by the strong smell of Mr. Han's own shoes, which Mr. Han claimed was normal for a sportsman. Consequently, He Xinliang decided to return to the classroom to put on another pair of his own shoes instead of wearing Mr. Han's. Meanwhile, Yan Ze was in the classroom, attempting to pry open Gu Xiye's locker. In the process, she accidentally cut her leg with a screwdriver.
Despite the injury, she managed to open the locker. Inside, she quickly found an envelope containing an invitation for a debate competition. Reading it, Yan Ze was overcome with guilt as memories flooded back: Gu Xiye assuring Yan Ze that their friendship and family bond were unbreakable, and Yan Ze entrusting all her writings to Gu Xiye for safekeeping, with Gu Xiye promising to safeguard them.
Yan Ze then discovered her old composition book, realizing Gu Xiye had brought it to school to prevent Yan Ze's parents from seeing it, deepening her remorse. Yan Ze wanted to return the invitation, but it was now stained with her blood. Seeing this, she sat in front of the locker and burst into tears. He Xinliang, who had returned to the classroom, witnessed all of Yan Ze's actions.
With a deep, long cut on her leg, Yan Ze limped to the washroom to clean her wound. He Xinliang quickly joined her, providing alcohol and cotton swabs, and carefully tended to her injury. He advised her to go home so her parents could care for her instead of staying in the dorm, emphasizing the need for two days of good rest and avoidance of strenuous activities, without asking about the incident itself.
When Yan Ze struggled to walk, He Xinliang carried her on his back to the bus station, calling her "stupid" and "always playing tough" good-naturedly, a gesture that deeply touched her. Meanwhile, Mr. Han and Ms. Gu Yu rested after their run. Mr. Han complimented Ms. Gu Yu's running, to which she responded by calling herself ugly and fat.
He then mused if all girls felt unattractive, recalling how Yan Ze had recently asked him if she was pretty, even comparing herself to Gu Xiye. Ms. Gu Yu explained that while Yan Ze might not be a "stunning girl," she was "very special," possessing a lovely, easygoing, and energetic personality that made her attractive to boys. She also noted that being Gu Xiye's best friend naturally brought Yan Ze attention.
Mr. Han then wondered if being associated with handsome basketball players would make him more attractive to girls, but Ms. Gu Yu replied that attracting girls depended on one's determination. Spurred by this, Mr. Han declared his determination and went for another run, with Ms. Gu Yu joining him. While He Xinliang waited with Yan Ze at the bus stop, a sudden thunderstorm broke out.
He quickly found a taxi and took Yan Ze home, pretending it was on his way and denying that he was making a special trip just for her. He also dismissed her concern about him getting a cold, telling her to "get over herself" and listen to music. Upon arriving at Yan Ze's house, she offered to wash his wet jacket. Despite his initial refusal, she insisted.
As she got out of the car, he reminded her to be careful with her leg. He Xinliang then instructed the taxi driver to wait, opting to stay downstairs until he was sure Yan Ze had safely entered her home. Yan Ze's parents were surprised to see her return alone, especially on a weekday. Sensing her low spirits, they refrained from asking questions after she requested them not to, and her father offered to make ginger tea.
After seeing Yan Ze safely inside, He Xinliang went to Ji Xiao's house, entering through his window as was his habit. Ji Xiao informed him that He Xinliang's mother had called, asking him to convince He Xinliang to leave the basketball team and focus on his studies. He Xinliang responded that he couldn't control his parents' affairs, and they shouldn't control his either.
He denied being angry about his parents' impending divorce, stating that no matter how hard he tried, the family would still break apart. Therefore, he preferred to please himself rather than bending to others' expectations. Ji Xiao expressed his support but suggested He Xinliang discuss it with his family.
He Xinliang, however, dismissed the idea of discussion, declaring his desire to be authentic and follow his heart, even if it meant being perceived as a "bad guy" for prioritizing his own happiness over pleasing others. Ji Xiao acknowledged his feelings, reflecting that everyone has their own struggles and sometimes people just need to express themselves without intervention. At home, Yan Ze agonized over how to explain to Gu Xiye that her locker had been opened. She drafted several messages, considering various excuses, but each one felt like a confession or a transparent lie. As she pondered, Gu Xiye suddenly called her, startling Yan Ze.
Episode 8 Recap
Yan Ze was at home, deeply troubled by how to confess to Gu Xiye about her broken locker. She drafted several messages, trying to find a suitable explanation, but each attempt felt wrong. Her thoughts, like "This sounds just like a confession. No, no. I'm sorry, Xiye, I opened your locker by accident. This lie is too much. I was being irrational today. I thought Ji Xiao gave you a love letter, so I broke your locker.
I'm really sorry," filled her mind. Just then, Gu Xiye called, making Yan Ze jump. Gu Xiye mentioned the heavy rain outside and that she had brought Yan Ze's clothes into the dorm. Gu Xiye then asked if they could chat, but Yan Ze lied, claiming her parents had called her home. Feeling awful, Yan Ze spotted He Xinliang's clothes and immediately sent a text to Gu Xiye, asking her to return them to He Xinliang the next day.
Meanwhile, He Xinliang, having borrowed Ji Xiao’s debate invitation, left Ji Xiao’s house. He Xinliang had asked Ji Xiao for his invitation, noting that both his and Gu Xiye’s invitation letters for the same debate should be identical since they were computer-printed. Ji Xiao questioned his motives, but He Xinliang simply insisted, "Why do you care so much? Just give it to me." After receiving it, He Xinliang thanked him and departed, declining Ji Xiao's offer to stay overnight.
The following day, Gu Xiye arrived at school to find her locker broken. Yan Ze soon entered, holding the now-stained invitation letter, her anxiety palpable. Feigning ignorance, Yan Ze asked what had happened. Gu Xiye explained that her locker was forced open and her invitation letter was missing. Yan Ze felt a pang of guilt.
To deflect, she handed He Xinliang’s clothes to Gu Xiye, claiming, "This is He Xinliang's coat, and he asked you to give it back to him." Gu Xiye was visibly pleased. Suddenly, the school broadcast announced the start of the sports meeting rehearsal and preliminaries, urging students to gather on the playground. Yan Ze quickly told her classmates to hurry and assemble downstairs. During the rehearsal, He Xinliang noticed Yan Ze’s injured leg and warned her to watch her steps.
Gu Xiye overheard and inquired about Yan Ze’s leg. Yan Ze quickly deflected, saying it was He Xinliang's leg that was injured and he should walk slowly. Concerned, He Xinliang pulled Yan Ze aside to ensure she rested. Meanwhile, on the rostrum, teachers and students remarked on how slowly Gu Xiye was walking while holding the class sign. Liu Xichuan, observing, made a special note next to Gu Xiye’s name.
When Ji Xiao asked what she was writing, Liu Xichuan explained she was noting her "potential competitors." She pointed out how other "class babes," carefully selected by Ms. Gu Yu, had elaborately dressed up for the rehearsal, which was a preview of the main event. In contrast, Gu Xiye wore only a simple school uniform with no makeup and a casual hairstyle.
Liu Xichuan concluded this demonstrated extreme confidence, warning Ji Xiao, "Who dares to do this except the top beauties? If you don't care about your appearance, you are confident, which means you are the top beauty. Bingo!" Ji Xiao, absorbing this, glanced at Yan Ze from afar, thinking, "The girls… are quite complicated." Yan Hai, watching from below, felt a surge of jealousy as he saw Liu Xichuan and Ji Xiao chatting and laughing on the rostrum.
A student beside him even commented that Liu Xichuan and Ji Xiao seemed well-matched, to which Yan Hai retorted, "It's nonsense. He looks like a frail scholar with no masculinity at all." On the field, Mr. Zheng confronted Gu Xiye, scolding her for walking too slowly. Gu Xiye apologetically took full responsibility and offered to accept any punishment.
Classmates informed Yan Ze about Mr. Zheng’s reprimand, but they stopped her from going to Gu Xiye’s aid, arguing that Gu Xiye could handle it herself, as "no one could stand it" when she looked aggrieved. Mr. Zheng warned Gu Xiye to improve for the official opening ceremony, as education leaders would be present. Separately, Mr. Han, concerned about Yan Hai’s shot-put performance in the preliminary round, brought He Xinliang along to watch.
He Xinliang questioned his presence, but Mr. Han insisted it was part of "off-site rescue and security," threatening Yan Hai would be a "shame" if he failed. Despite Mr. Han's apparent criticism, He Xinliang deduced he was secretly cheering for Yan Hai.
Yan Hai performed surprisingly well, throwing the shot put a long distance, much to He Xinliang's admiration and Mr. Han's annoyance, who declared Yan Hai could become a "professional shot putter" but "don't come back to the basketball team again." Throughout the day, Ji Xiao frequently called Yan Ze to the rostrum for various small tasks, such as reminding classmates to submit more newsletter articles.
He Xinliang, worried about Yan Ze’s injured leg, texted Ji Xiao, asking him to stop calling her to the rostrum because her leg was hurt. However, Ji Xiao's phone was turned off and he did not see the message. The girls' 4x100 meter relay race for Class 3 was announced. One of the team members, Wu Meng, suddenly couldn't participate, leaving the team a person short.
Gu Xiye, remembering Yan Ze’s good physical test results from junior high, suggested she step in, emphasizing the class's collective honor. Despite her injury, Yan Ze reluctantly agreed, hiding her discomfort. As she walked to the starting line, she desperately tried to text Ji Xiao, pleading, "Ji Xiao, please ask for me again!" hoping he would call her away, but his phone remained off. Enduring the pain, Yan Ze prepared to run.
Just then, Gu Xiye approached He Xinliang to return his clothes. He Xinliang, surprised, asked why Yan Ze hadn't brought them herself. Gu Xiye explained Yan Ze had told her he asked her to, and He Xinliang muttered about Yan Ze being "a naughty girl" for "bossing her around." He then noticed Yan Ze on the track. Rushing forward, He Xinliang scooped Yan Ze into his arms and carried her to the infirmary.
Seeing this, Ji Xiao also left the rostrum to follow them. In the infirmary, an infirmary teacher recognized Yan Ze from a previous hand injury and expressed concern about her leg, advising her to avoid strenuous activities for a week or two to prevent the "flesh wound" from reopening. Yan Ze, after having her leg bandaged, tried to leave to check on her class, but He Xinliang adamantly stopped her, reminding her of the doctor's words. "
The Class 3 is not gonna collapse without you. It's just a preliminary. It's not worth it. Just stay here. Don't go anywhere," he insisted, even teasing that moving around with an injured leg would make her shorter. Yan Ze retorted that she wasn't short and called him out for his "filthy mouth." Meanwhile, seeing He Xinliang carry Yan Ze away had left Gu Xiye feeling dejected, and she stood staring blankly in the stands.
Ms. Gu Yu approached to collect the class signs and noticed Gu Xiye’s distraction. She asked why Gu Xiye had marched so unusually slowly during the parade, as she was usually so good. Gu Xiye explained that a classmate had an injured leg, so she purposely slowed her pace to match. Yan Ze reflected on the day, realizing the debt of gratitude she owed He Xinliang for his care.
Episode 9 Recap
Ji Xiao rushed to the infirmary to check on Yan Ze, showing great concern by asking a barrage of questions about her leg injury. He asked, "What's wrong with you? Did you get your leg injured? Has everything been taken care of? Does it still hurt? When did you get injured? Why didn't you tell me?" He also mentioned receiving a message from her, but his phone was off.
Yan Ze joked that he was like Tang Sanzang for talking so much, as she had never seen him speak so much before. Ji Xiao retorted by saying that if he hadn't seen her clearly at the podium, he wouldn't have known she was injured, reiterating, "Why didn't you tell me?" Yan Ze, however, didn't want to elaborate, asking him to stop questioning her and pointing out that He Xinliang could ask.
After he got her some hot water, they discovered a bag of food left outside the door. Both assumed it was from Gu Xiye, which made Yan Ze happy, believing Gu Xiye wouldn't abandon her. She wondered why Gu Xiye didn't come in. Meanwhile, He Xinliang went to the classroom and fixed Gu Xiye's locker. When Gu Xiye returned, she found him there.
He Xinliang explained, "Yan Ze asked me to fix the locker for you," and then added, "She really cares about you." He also handed her an invitation card, claiming, "Yan Ze asked me to give it to you." This angered Gu Xiye, who questioned why Yan Ze didn't give it to her directly if she knew she was looking for it that morning. She then sharply asked He Xinliang, "Are you guys so close now? Weren't you deadly foes before?"
He Xinliang lightly dismissed her question, joking, "I'm the bigger person and she already kowtowed to me, so I've forgiven her." He then informed Gu Xiye about Yan Ze's injury, telling her, "She was slightly injured, and she is staying at the infirmary now. Show her your care when you've got the time. She really cares about you." Gu Xiye remained unresponsive, prompting He Xinliang to ask, "Aren't you going to see her? Isn't she your bestie?"
Gu Xiye only asked what else Yan Ze had told him, to which he replied, "She didn't tell me anything." Gu Xiye thanked him for fixing the locker. Gu Xiye took Yan Ze's composition book from her locker, remembering a time when Yan Ze's mother had scolded Yan Ze for writing "little articles" instead of studying, and Gu Xiye had bravely covered for her.
Now, Gu Xiye returned the notebook to Yan Ze in the infirmary, coldly stating, "I can't keep the scripts for you in the future. Just keep it yourself." When Yan Ze asked why, Gu Xiye pressed her, "Do you know something?" Yan Ze became evasive, which prompted Gu Xiye to question their friendship: "Do you still regard me as your friend now? Now He Xinliang is your friend, right? He is the friend who knows everything about you."
Gu Xiye then confronted Yan Ze about the clothes incident and her leg injury, expressing her hurt: "Why did you lie to me that he wanted me to deliver it? And as for the injury to your leg, you didn't tell me about it, and I was so silly to ask you to be the substitute of the relay race which gave He Xinliang a chance to save you. How about me? I became the one who hurt you.
Ze, since when have you become so wary of me? What did I do to make you keep so many things from me?" Yan Ze wanted to reveal the truth about her crush on Ji Xiao and how it led to her actions, but she lacked the courage. Instead, she simply apologized, saying, "I'm sorry."
Gu Xiye then asked if Yan Ze had fallen in love with He Xinliang, citing his actions like her washing his clothes, him taking care of her, asking Gu Xiye to visit her, and delivering the invitation. Yan Ze was shocked but vehemently denied it, swearing, "I really don't like him. I swear." Gu Xiye then made a demand: "If it's true that you don't like him, then I want you to keep some distance from him." Yan Ze agreed.
After the sports meeting, Mr. Zheng praised the class for their performance. He specifically commended Yan Ze for her "admirable spirit" in participating while injured for the class's honor, despite not finishing the race. He also acknowledged He Xinliang for "enthusiastically helping classmates," though he advised him to "do it in a better way" next time. Once Mr. Zheng left, the class descended into chaos.
Yan Ze, as class monitor, noticed Gu Xiye's locker was fixed and called He Xinliang to the water room. There, she quietly confronted him, asking, "What do you know?" and insisting they "keep our distance." He Xinliang playfully dodged her questions, leading to a circular exchange where Yan Ze pressed him, "What the hell do you know? Just tell me! Did you fix Xiye's locker? Did you see everything that night?"
He Xinliang then pinned her against the wall, revealing he learned the move from Ji Xiao, who "often does this to me." He then sternly told her, "Listen, you could ask when you're supposed to ask. But if you are not, you should hold it back," giving "the locker and Ji Xiao" as examples. Yan Ze demanded he "Get out of my way! Let's keep a distance," but he only moved closer.
At that moment, Gu Xiye walked in, saw them, and immediately turned and left, prompting Yan Ze to chase after her. In physical education class, Gu Xiye continued to give Yan Ze the cold shoulder. Yan Ze drew a small girl on the ground, initially writing "Xiye" next to it, then crossing it out and replacing it with "Yan Ze." Noticing Yan Ze lost in thought, He Xinliang approached her for a serious conversation.
He offered to "evaluate your looks with my professional eyes," which piqued Yan Ze's interest. However, he mischievously declared her "an ugly but soulful girl." Infuriated, Yan Ze demanded, "You just immediately get out of here without stopping!" He Xinliang quickly clarified it was a joke and that she was actually "cute and adorable," making Yan Ze secretly pleased. When asked about his "serious talk," He Xinliang inquired about her choice for the Division of Arts and Sciences next semester.
Yan Ze, without hesitation, stated, "Of course I'll choose arts. I'm looking for trouble if I choose sciences," to which He Xinliang agreed. Yan Ze again told him to "keep your distance from me," but He Xinliang countered, "Why should I keep distance?" Mr. Zheng announced an upcoming foreign student exchange program for the summer vacation, explaining that as the head English teacher of the top class, the responsibility for hosting would "naturally fall on our class."
He urged everyone to "actively take part in it and show them the elegance of Yangming Middle School." While students were unenthusiastic, Ji Xiao readily signed up. Mr. Zheng then called upon Yan Ze, telling her, "As the class monitor, you should take the lead. I'm counting you in, okay?" Yan Ze nervously agreed. Next, Mr. Zheng suggested He Xinliang host a student to practice his English, given his strong academic performance.
However, He Xinliang declined, explaining, "Mr. Zheng, I can't do that. I'm going to America for the Mathematical Olympiad summer camp. I'll hardly have a chance to speak Chinese." Finally, Mr. Zheng turned to Gu Xiye, saying, "Xiye, your spoken English is perfect, how about receiving one? I trust you. I'll leave the last foreign student to you."
Yan Ze then asked if "one family can only host one foreign student," and upon confirmation, began to say, "Then Xiye and I. . ." but Gu Xiye quickly cut her off, asserting, "I've no problem, Mr. Zheng." Yan Hai planned a grand confession to Liu Xichuan, inspired by a classic scene from "The Story of a Noble Family" involving Jin Yanxi, intending it to be an "absolute sensation."
His banner read: "To the beautiful and sweet-voiced senior, Liu Xichuan: Yan Hai, who is proficient in everything from basketball to discus and can be cool or cute as you wish, likes you." However, the banner was two meters too long for the planned location. He Xinliang suggested hanging it from the rooftop, which Yan Hai thought was a brilliant idea. The only obstacle was obtaining the rooftop key, which was with Mr. Zheng.
He Xinliang confidently declared, "I'll figure it out." Later, while He Xinliang was secretly searching for the key in Mr. Zheng's office, Yan Ze and Gu Xiye entered. Yan Ze asked Gu Xiye, "What do you wanna tell Mr. Zheng?" Gu Xiye replied that she intended to "make confession," revealing, "I'm gonna tell him that my parents have been in prison and I've been adopted by your family. So I don't have a home to host the foreign student."
He Xinliang, overhearing this from his hiding spot, was stunned. Yan Ze quickly tried to dissuade Gu Xiye, assuring her, "I swear I'll keep the secret for you. I didn't mean it. I would never, never tell anyone." She persuaded Gu Xiye to postpone the confession, promising, "There must be a way to solve it. Let's go back first," and then led her out of the office. Once they were gone, He Xinliang resumed his search for the key.
Episode 10 Recap
He Xinliang was secretly searching for the rooftop key in Mr. Zheng's office when Mr. Zheng unexpectedly walked in. He Xinliang quickly hid the key he had found. Mr. Zheng was surprised to see him and asked what he was doing there. He Xinliang explained that he wanted to discuss the upcoming Division of Arts and Sciences.
Mr. Zheng assured him that with his excellent academic performance, choosing either arts or sciences would be fine, but as his head teacher, he suggested He Xinliang pursue sciences for a better future. He Xinliang tried to excuse himself, but Mr. Zheng kept elaborating. Finally, He Xinliang declared that Mr. Zheng's words had provided him with sudden enlightenment and promptly left. Mr. Zheng then pondered that even exceptional students can experience a unique kind of distress.
Back in the classroom, He Xinliang called Gu Xiye aside. He asked if she was hesitant about hosting a foreign exchange student, noting her look of dilemma when Mr. Zheng mentioned it earlier. He offered to host the student on her behalf, so she wouldn't feel awkward. Gu Xiye was pleased but worried it might conflict with his summer camp in America.
He Xinliang reassured her that the camp started later, so he could see off the foreign student before he left. Meanwhile, Yan Ze, having devised a solution for their two foreign students, rushed to tell Gu Xiye, only to be informed that the issue had already been resolved, though Gu Xiye did not elaborate on the solution. He Xinliang gave the collection of keys to Yan Hai. With so many keys, they couldn't identify the one for the rooftop.
Guo Chao began testing them one by one, which made Yan Hai, waiting below the teaching building, increasingly anxious. Unable to wait any longer for the banner to be unfurled, Yan Hai decided to proceed with his confession. Using a megaphone, he loudly declared his affection for Liu Xichuan, calling out her name. A large crowd of students gathered, including Yan Ze, He Xinliang, Ji Xiao, and Gu Xiye.
Yan Ze felt embarrassed by her brother's public display, while Ji Xiao admired Yan Hai's sincerity and courage. Eventually, Liu Xichuan emerged, took the megaphone, and announced that she did not like him, asking him to refrain from such actions in the future. Just then, Guo Chao successfully unlocked the rooftop door and unfurled the banner. Yan Hai, seeking an explanation, was told by Liu Xichuan that his public confession had embarrassed her.
Struck by her words, Yan Hai was heartbroken. Mr. Zheng then appeared, sternly criticizing Yan Hai's behavior and dispersing the onlookers. Mr. Zheng tried to console a tearful Yan Hai, who denied crying, before sending him to his office. Yan Ze convened her last class meeting as the monitor of Class 3, expressing her gratitude for everyone's support and cooperation. She reminded the students who planned to study arts to submit their application forms the following day.
To the surprise of everyone, including He Xinliang and Yan Ze, Ji Xiao stood up and stated he would choose arts. Seeing Ji Xiao's decision, He Xinliang seemed to grasp Ji Xiao's feelings for Yan Ze and discreetly threw his own form, also marked for arts, into the trash. Yan Ze later asked Ji Xiao why he chose arts.
He replied that he liked arts and also "the one who chooses arts," though Yan Ze didn't quite catch the last part. Regardless, Yan Ze was delighted by his choice. At the Graduation Party for the Class of 2007, Yan Hai continued to drown his sorrows in cola, still crestfallen from his rejected confession. Yan Ze tried to stop him, warning him about drinking too much. She then searched for Ji Xiao to confirm his decision about studying arts.
She found him, but he was engrossed in watching Liu Xichuan sing on stage and didn't respond to Yan Ze's excited calls, nor did he hear her question about whether he liked Liu Xichuan. After Liu Xichuan finished her song, Ji Xiao went on stage to present her with flowers. Witnessing their seemingly perfect pairing, Yan Ze cried and ran off. Later, Gu Xiye was surrounded by boys vying for a dance.
Yan Ze's roommate stopped Yan Ze from intervening, sharing "big news": Gu Xiye's status might be challenged by a new, smart and beautiful transfer student. The roommate struggled to recall the name, only remembering it sounded like "Xiao Zhuo". Eventually, she shouted, "Xiao Zhuo'an!" This name stunned both Gu Xiye and Yan Ze, as Xiao Zhuo'an was their former close friend who had disappeared without a trace.
As summer vacation commenced, Mr. Zheng gathered students, including Yan Ze, to inform them of their "glorious and arduous task" of hosting foreign exchange students. He handed the students' information to Yan Ze, instructing her to assign one student per family, adhering to same-gender pairings for convenience. The students were perplexed by the "blind pick" system, as only names were provided, with no photos or explicit gender indicators. They worried about being assigned an "ugly" student.
Yan Ze offered to take the last remaining student, promising to switch with anyone who was dissatisfied. Ji Xiao chose a student named Ari Singh Sabrah, saying he liked the name and found it "nice", inferring it was a male based on the name but not verifying the gender. After Ji Xiao made his choice, Yan Ze excused herself and left the room.
The episode concluded with a reflection on how, when faced with goodbyes, people often stubbornly pretend to be indifferent, only realizing the depth of their feelings for those who leave without a word when they meet again.
Episode 11 Recap
Gu Xiye called He Xinliang, informing him that she had picked up a male foreign student as advised by Mr. Zheng, who suggested matching genders. He Xinliang immediately suspected it was Yan Ze's idea, mockingly referring to her as a "smarty pants." Although Gu Xiye offered to wait for him, He Xinliang said he was looking for Ji Xiao. He also asked Gu Xiye to call him "He Xinliang" directly, as "Xinliang" sounded strange to him.
Gu Xiye agreed and thanked him. Later, Yan Ze was found cleaning the classroom. She explained that since she would be transferring classes next semester, she wanted to make one last contribution to Class 3. Ji Xiao then joined Yan Ze, offering to help with the cleaning. He revealed that Liu Xichuan was his cousin, a fact known by only a few people. Yan Ze was very surprised and excited by this revelation, asking why he was telling her now.
Ji Xiao simply replied that it was just "chat." Yan Ze then shyly asked Ji Xiao if he was free during the summer break to help her choose a birthday gift for her father next week. Ji Xiao initially mentioned he would be studying, but then agreed to meet her on Sunday afternoon, promising to be there "or be square." On her way home, still elated, a basketball almost hit Yan Ze.
He Xinliang rushed to protect her, but Yan Ze angrily accused him of throwing the ball, refusing to let him explain. The scare made Yan Ze forget the phone number Ji Xiao had asked her to relay to Gu Xiye. She ran back to find Ji Xiao, who wrote the number on her hand. Yan Ze questioned why the number was important if it was "nothing important," given the trouble she went through.
Ji Xiao explained that he wasn't carrying his phone and, after being hit by a basketball himself, had also momentarily forgotten his own number, adding it was good that she came back for it. As Yan Ze hummed cheerfully on her way, He Xinliang confronted her about her strange behavior. He was surprised when she didn't argue back. Yan Ze shared her good mood, revealing Ji Xiao's explanation about Liu Xichuan being his cousin.
He Xinliang stated he already knew, having been the one who told Ji Xiao that their relationship was causing misunderstandings. Yan Ze scolded He Xinliang for not telling her earlier, regretting the "dirty look" she had given Ji Xiao. He Xinliang threatened to stop interfering in her affairs, prompting Yan Ze to quickly soften her stance, calling him her "savior." She pressed him to explain how he told Ji Xiao about her unhappiness, but He Xinliang found her questions nosy.
Yan Ze then pulled him back to share her excitement, telling him about her Sunday afternoon shopping date with Ji Xiao. He Xinliang became visibly displeased and left in a taxi. At home, Yan Ze gave Ji Xiao's number to Gu Xiye, who revealed she already had it from their debate competitions, leaving Yan Ze confused about Ji Xiao's actions. Gu Xiye then asked Yan Ze if Xiao Zhuo'an was truly returning, referring to rumors.
Yan Ze dismissed it as baseless gossip from Zhai Jingliu. Gu Xiye expressed her inability to forgive Xiao Zhuo'an for leaving without a word. Yan Ze reassured Gu Xiye that she would support her no matter what, which made Gu Xiye happy. Yan Ze then informed Gu Xiye that she had plans that Sunday and asked her to help pick up the foreign students. Gu Xiye confirmed that her own assigned foreign student matter was resolved.
He Xinliang visited Ji Xiao, still agitated about Yan Ze's date. He joked that he was "having his period." He also commented on how anyone could like someone like Ji Xiao. Ji Xiao then asked He Xinliang to take his place picking up the foreign students on Sunday, as he had other plans. He Xinliang was even more annoyed but agreed, implying he was doing it for Ji Xiao and Yan Ze's sake.
He suggested a delicious new dessert shop on the business street, despite Ji Xiao stating he doesn't eat sweets. Meanwhile, Yan Ze meticulously prepared for her meeting with Ji Xiao, even putting on makeup. Ji Xiao was surprised when he saw her. He Xinliang and Gu Xiye went to the school to pick up the foreign students. Mr. Zheng briefly gave instructions before leaving, noting that Yan Ze and Ji Xiao were absent.
Two male foreign students, one named Jack, initially approached Gu Xiye, hoping she would be their guide. However, He Xinliang intervened, insisting he was responsible for them. The students protested, with one calling He Xinliang "a boy who sucks." He Xinliang was enraged and threatened to quit, but then he remembered Gu Xiye's difficult background, including her parents being in prison and her adoption.
He calmed himself, smoothed things over, and invited everyone to dinner, offering to prove he was a "cute boy." Gu Xiye agreed to join, acknowledging the trouble she had caused him. Ji Xiao and Yan Ze went to the dessert shop. Yan Ze happily enjoyed her dessert, but Ji Xiao ate nothing. When she asked why, he explained he doesn't eat sweets, making Yan Ze feel a bit awkward. Meanwhile, He Xinliang took the foreign students to eat Chongqing noodles.
Gu Xiye worried this might delay He Xinliang's summer camp, but he told her not to concern herself. Gu Xiye praised He Xinliang, saying that despite his seemingly tough exterior, he was "very gentle and kind," and a good person who loved helping others, even though he never admitted it. He Xinliang denied this, insisting he was "not a good guy" and advised "little girls" like her to "look at the essence through the surface."
One of the foreign students echoed, "You are not a good person," prompting He Xinliang to tell him to simply eat his noodles. Later, Gu Xiye brought the foreign students, including Amy, back to Yan Ze's home, where Yan Ze's parents had prepared many dishes. Gu Xiye, already full from eating with He Xinliang, whispered this to Yan Ze. Yan Ze then told Amy to just eat a little and compliment her parents.
Yan Ze's parents, seeing Gu Xiye's fluent communication with the students and Yan Ze's lack of understanding, began to criticize Yan Ze. They compared her unfavorably to Gu Xiye, commenting on her makeup and for wearing her mother's dress, threatening severe punishment if she continued her "useless nonsense." Yan Ze explained to Amy that her parents were "expressing their love." Amy enjoyed a non-sweet dish.
Later, He Xinliang called Yan Ze, angrily complaining that the "very perverted" Indian student she had picked for him was making him afraid to go home. He demanded that Yan Ze accompany him and take full responsibility for the student during the day. Yan Ze readily agreed, profusely thanking him. Yan Ze, He Xinliang, and Gu Xiye then took the foreign students to various sights. They ran into classmates, including Ji Xiao.
Yan Ze suggested a group photo, but as everyone posed, He Xinliang quietly walked out of the frame. Yan Ze reflected in a voiceover that in her high school days, there was a boy who listened to many of her thoughts, but she seemed to have missed the many unspoken words he had for her.
Episode 12 Recap
All students and American students gathered for a group photo. As the picture was being taken, He Xinliang quietly walked out of the frame. Yan Ze noticed his absence and asked for a retake, insisting that He Xinliang join the group. Though He Xinliang asked, "Why should I?" , he eventually stood in. After the photo, Ji Xiao invited Yan Ze to a famous new snack bar by the river at 7 PM.
Before they could finish their conversation, Ji Xiao was pulled away by the American students, leaving Yan Ze unable to tell him her phone was dead. Yan Ze then suggested that Gu Xiye and the American students go home first, claiming she needed to pick up something from school and telling them not to wait for her for dinner. She then headed alone to the snack bar by the river.
Back at home, Gu Xiye presented a gift of intricately folded paper cranes to Yan Ze's parents, thanking them for giving her a second home. They were touched by her thoughtfulness and remarked that she was their child just like Yan Ze. As time passed and Yan Ze still hadn't returned, her parents began to complain about her staying out late, comparing her conscientiousness to Gu Xiye's. However, their words carried deep concern and love.
Gu Xiye listened, feeling a little uneasy. Meanwhile, Yan Ze continued to wait by the river for Ji Xiao, but he was nowhere to be seen. Her parents, worried, waited for her at their door. Finally, Ji Xiao arrived. However, his first words were to ask Yan Ze if she knew where Gu Xiye was. Mistaking his intention, a hurt Yan Ze sadly walked away. It turned out the American student had repeatedly urged Ji Xiao to find Gu Xiye.
After Yan Ze's departure, Ji Xiao angrily confronted the student, telling him that he had upset "my girl." Yan Ze returned home distraught and tearful. Her father, initially ready to scold her, softened upon seeing her crying and didn't reprimand her. The task of hosting the American students concluded, and Mr. Zheng expressed his satisfaction with the students' performance. He asked Yan Ze for a group photo with the American students to include in his "Outstanding Teacher" evaluation materials.
Yan Ze provided two photos taken at a local landmark. She worried that Mr. Zheng would notice He Xinliang was missing from one of them. However, after carefully comparing the two pictures for a long time, Mr. Zheng only noticed an extra trash can in one photo, remarking that the pictures looked largely the same and chiding them for wasting class funds by developing two nearly identical photos.
He eventually chose the one without the trash can, finding the people in it clearer. Yan Ze and Mr. Zheng went to see the American students off at the airport. Coincidentally, He Xinliang was also flying to the United States that day. Yan Ze was still angry with Ji Xiao and ignored him.
Before their departure, Cooper, one of the American students, approached Gu Xiye with flowers and made a heartfelt confession, saying he had fallen in love with her at first sight. Mr. Zheng intervened good-naturedly, humorously stating he was the "buster of puppy love" and that students should love their teacher. Yan Ze watched the confession with envy. Ji Xiao, observing Yan Ze's reaction, asked if she liked flowers.
Yan Ze expressed admiration for Cooper's courage, believing that if one likes someone, they should bravely express it. Ji Xiao appeared thoughtful after hearing her words. Later, Yan Ze asked Gu Xiye how it felt to be confessed to by someone she didn't like. Gu Xiye replied that she felt "nothing, but a little bit awkward." Yan Ze openly expressed her envy for Gu Xiye, who always had so many suitors.
As Yan Ze and Gu Xiye hailed a taxi to go home, Ji Xiao suddenly rushed over, asking for a ride, claiming he couldn't get another taxi. Yan Ze initially protested, saying it was not on their way, but Ji Xiao insisted and got into the car. During the ride, Ji Xiao, recalling Yan Ze's earlier words about expressing feelings boldly, sent a text message to confess his feelings to Yan Ze.
However, he accidentally sent the message to Gu Xiye's phone. Unaware of his mistake, Ji Xiao felt disappointed that Yan Ze hadn't replied. Upon returning home, Gu Xiye asked Yan Ze how she would refuse someone she didn't like, finding it strange since Yan Ze knew Gu Xiye was accustomed to such situations. Gu Xiye then showed Yan Ze the text message, revealing that it was from Ji Xiao. Yan Ze was shocked to learn the truth.
Meanwhile, Ji Xiao was anxiously awaiting Yan Ze's reply at home, but no response came. Yan Ze offered to help Gu Xiye reject Ji Xiao, insisting on a firm and unambiguous refusal to leave no room for misunderstanding. She then replied to Ji Xiao's message with a blunt, "You wish. Maybe next life!" Ji Xiao was deeply disheartened by the reply, believing it was Yan Ze's unequivocal rejection. Yan Ze, too, felt unsettled and restless about the whole incident.
Episode 13 Recap
He Xinliang's father, a PhD in engineering, hoped his son would follow in his and his wife's footsteps and pursue scientific research. He believed America offered excellent laboratory equipment and resources for He Xinliang to further his studies. However, He Xinliang expressed his desire to play basketball, not to be a researcher. His father insisted that He Xinliang was wasting his talent and resources by focusing on basketball.
He Xinliang countered that he was not happy doing what his parents wanted, stating, "I'm not happy that way." He passionately declared his love for basketball and his belief that he could excel with that passion, recalling how a friend taught him that pursuing what one loves is paramount. He added that his parents rarely cared about his feelings.
He Xinliang mentioned that during his summer camp, he learned many basketball skills from players in the All-American High School Basketball League and identified his shortcomings. His father was disappointed in his son's newfound conviction. As the new semester began, Yan Ze and Ji Xiao arrived late to class and found themselves once again as desk-mates. Meanwhile, in Class 3, a new transfer student, Xiao Zhuo'an, arrived, much to the surprise of Gu Xiye.
Xiao Zhuo'an greeted Gu Xiye, and their teacher, Mr. Zheng, asked Gu Xiye to show her around. Yan Ze also spotted Xiao Zhuo'an at the opening ceremony, and a visible tension arose when Liu Xichuan, the school's esteemed beauty, met Xiao Zhuo'an. Later, Yan Ze took over Liu Xichuan's role as head of the Sports Department.
Liu Xichuan inquired about Xiao Zhuo'an, and Yan Ze informed her that Xiao Zhuo'an was already the talk of the school's boys, with even Yan Hai seemingly smitten. Liu Xichuan reacted with clear displeasure upon hearing this. With Yan Ze moving to an arts class, Class 3 needed a new class monitor. Xiao Zhuo'an boldly volunteered, declaring that she would certainly outperform Yan Ze in the role.
After school, Gu Xiye also added her name to the blackboard for the class monitor election. Xiao Zhuo'an entered, remarking to Gu Xiye that she hadn't changed, always "hiding behind someone else, letting others deal with the problems, but at the same time, you're secretly competing." Gu Xiye demanded to know Xiao Zhuo'an's intentions. Xiao Zhuo'an stated she simply wanted to reclaim her original position and what belonged to her.
Gu Xiye challenged her, asking if she truly believed she could return to her old place, to which Xiao Zhuo'an confidently replied that she would find new, better places regardless. Gu Xiye, frustrated, asked Xiao Zhuo'an what she thought of her classmates, questioning if she considered them friends. Xiao Zhuo'an replied that she considered Gu Xiye a friend. Gu Xiye questioned if Xiao Zhuo'an ever truly considered her a friend and pressed her about past involvement in "something like that."
Xiao Zhuo'an then warned Gu Xiye not to assume she could take others' things just because she thought she was better. She declared, "Now that I'm back, and I'm better than before, I'm going to take back what belongs to me." Gu Xiye interpreted this as a challenge, and Xiao Zhuo'an readily accepted. Just as Xiao Zhuo'an began to question Gu Xiye about her relationship with He Xinliang, Liu Xichuan arrived and interrupted, challenging Xiao Zhuo'an herself.
Their ensuing confrontation quickly drew a large crowd of male students. Gu Xiye later approached Yan Ze, asking about the preparations needed to run for class monitor. Yan Ze was astonished by Gu Xiye's sudden interest in elections. Gu Xiye explained that she wanted to compete with Xiao Zhuo'an. Hearing this, Yan Ze felt a pang of disappointment, realizing that Gu Xiye seemed closer to Xiao Zhuo'an and would change herself for her.
She mused that even in a group of three, there would always be two who were more intimately connected. During class, a teacher asked how many minutes it takes for sunlight to reach Earth. Yan Ze correctly answered "eight minutes," a fact Xiao Zhuo'an had once explained in detail, describing the philosophical implication that the warmth and brightness we experience are, in a sense, from the past.
As Yan Ze and her younger brother, Yan Hai, walked home, Yan Hai asked her what girls were always thinking about. Yan Ze herself was perplexed by Xiao Zhuo'an's sudden return and decision to run for class monitor, Gu Xiye's anger, her own feelings of loss, and Liu Xichuan's unexpected interest in Xiao Zhuo'an. Yan Hai was particularly surprised about Liu Xichuan's attention to Xiao Zhuo'an.
When Yan Ze began to hint about Ji Xiao, Yan Hai pressed her for details, teasing that she would be "left unloved" if she left a sentence unfinished. Yan Ze playfully chided him, then sighed, "No wonder no one likes me." He Xinliang returned from America, having hoped for a call or text from Yan Ze, but receiving none. Meanwhile, Ji Xiao approached Yan Ze, attempting to mend their strained relationship.
He noted her recent "terrible" attitude toward him and offered to overlook her previous "rude remarks." Yan Ze, still seething over his mistaken confession to Gu Xiye, was about to retort when He Xinliang called her. On the phone, He Xinliang complained about her lack of contact. Agitated, Yan Ze told him to stay where he was and she would come to him.
Ji Xiao asked who had called, and Yan Ze informed him it was He Xinliang, who was back. Ji Xiao seemed pleased by the news and briefly considered calling He Xinliang himself, but ultimately put his phone down. Yan Ze rushed to meet He Xinliang and, full of pent-up anger, immediately blurted out that Ji Xiao had confessed to Gu Xiye. She lashed out at He Xinliang, blaming him for providing "wrong" information and not truly understanding Ji Xiao.
Seeing Yan Ze so distraught, He Xinliang felt genuinely bad. To cheer her up, he suggested they release Kongming lanterns. Despite his efforts, Yan Ze remained unhappy. She asked He Xinliang if Ji Xiao had ever confessed to anyone else before. After jokingly asking if he himself counted, he confirmed that Ji Xiao hadn't. Yan Ze lamented that all boys seemed to favor "perfect" girls like Gu Xiye.
Then, she dropped a bombshell: He Xinliang's childhood sweetheart, Xiao Zhuo'an, had returned and was now in his class, leaving him visibly shocked. He Xinliang's inner thoughts revealed his feelings about old friends, wondering how Xiao Zhuo'an was doing but not daring to ask.
Episode 14 Recap
He Xinliang was stunned to learn about Xiao Zhuo'an's return. Yan Ze tearfully recounted her disappointment regarding Ji Xiao's supposed confession, openly criticizing a girl's perfection that all boys seemed to adore, implicitly referring to Gu Xiye. She pressed He Xinliang about his childhood sweetheart, Xiao Zhuo'an, being back and suggested he go see her.
He Xinliang, though visibly affected by the news, feigned indifference, claiming he hadn't even blinked when Xiao Zhuo'an left before, and questioned what her return could possibly change now. Yan Ze accused him of faking his composure as she could see his facial muscles twitching. As Yan Ze continued to express her heartbreak and confusion, questioning why Ji Xiao had given her unrealistic hope, He Xinliang, at a loss, let her cry on his shoulder until she eventually fell asleep.
They remained there until dawn, waking up to the sunrise. He Xinliang explained to Yan Ze that when one is in darkness, the sun has already risen; it simply takes eight minutes for its light to be felt. He then took her to Ji Xiao's house, urging her to clarify matters. When Ji Xiao appeared, He Xinliang intervened, insisting that Ji Xiao properly identify the object of his "confession."
He placed Yan Ze's hand in Ji Xiao's, prompting them to speak face-to-face. Ji Xiao told Yan Ze that he was truly happy to be her desk-mate and hoped she wouldn't change seats. Yan Ze then realized the message had been about their shared desk, not a romantic confession, and she was instantly overjoyed, assuring him she had no intention of changing seats. Confused, Yan Ze asked Ji Xiao why the message had been sent to Gu Xiye's phone.
Ji Xiao explained that he had sent the message to the number he found on her Youth League Card, which Yan Ze then admitted was Gu Xiye's number that she had carelessly put down and never changed. Seeing their misunderstanding resolved, He Xinliang left, his heart heavy. Yan Ze, however, was in a state of euphoria, constantly smiling and laughing. Gu Xiye found Yan Ze's continuous glee strange and asked her what was happening. Yan Ze happily explained everything.
Gu Xiye then asked if Yan Ze was angry with her regarding the past rumors about her and Ji Xiao. Yan Ze quickly reassured her, emphasizing that their long-standing friendship far outweighed any recent connection with Ji Xiao. Later, at dinner with Yan Ze's parents, Yan Ze's mother mentioned preparing mooncakes and gifts for Gu Xiye's parents and asked her to take them when she visited them.
This deeply saddened Gu Xiye, who abruptly left the house to clear her head. Yan Ze's parents discussed Gu Xiye's reluctance to visit her incarcerated parents, with Yan Ze's mother insisting she should, while her father and Yan Ze herself argued that Gu Xiye should go only when she feels ready. Out alone, Gu Xiye coincidentally met He Xinliang, who was on his way to Ji Xiao's house. She asked why he wasn't home for the Moon festival.
He Xinliang explained his parents were divorced, and he preferred Ji Xiao's home, also lamenting his mother's habit of cooking only alkaline noodles. He Xinliang advised Gu Xiye to call Yan Ze when going out late, as it was unsafe to be alone. Gu Xiye walked to a spot where she, Yan Ze, and Xiao Zhuo'an used to play.
Memories flooded back, recalling how Xiao Zhuo'an had once promised to always take them with her wherever she went, and their shared dream of attending Yangming Middle School together. Later, Yan Ze spoke with Ji Xiao on the phone. He asked about her plans for the student union elections in the new semester. Yan Ze expressed uncertainty about her chances, comparing herself to Liu Xichuan.
Ji Xiao praised Yan Ze's interpersonal skills, rating them superior to Liu Xichuan's, which delighted Yan Ze. However, he also frankly pointed out her weaker academic performance. Yan Ze, not deterred, asked him for more help. Upon hearing that He Xinliang had recently praised her, Ji Xiao promptly offered to take her to the library to study. Yan Ze was ecstatic, agreeing to meet early at 8 AM when the library opened.
The next day, Yan Ze arrived early at the library, surprised to see Ji Xiao already there, impeccably dressed. A few students nearby commented on Ji Xiao's handsome appearance and classy attire, while disparaging Yan Ze's "trashy clothes" and calling her his "lackey." Later, Yan Ze officially took over as the head of the Sports Department from Liu Xichuan. She immediately called He Xinliang to help move items.
Liu Xichuan, witnessing their interaction, commented that she had initially thought He Xinliang and Yan Ze were a couple. Both Yan Ze and He Xinliang swiftly denied it, with He Xinliang humorously stating that Yan Ze was his "good buddy" and not like a girl, and Yan Ze adding that they were "like sisters." Liu Xichuan then noticed the bulletin board announcing Xiao Zhuo'an as the new head of the Cultural and Recreational Department, which visibly angered her.
As if on cue, Yan Hai and Xiao Zhuo'an walked by. Yan Hai made a show of being close to Xiao Zhuo'an, offering to carry her books, further enraging Liu Xichuan, who then snapped at Yan Ze not to speak to her. Left alone, Yan Ze reflected on being left with tasks while others enjoyed themselves, and how the sun's light eventually triumphs over darkness, a comforting thought after the day's events.
Episode 15 Recap
Xiao Zhuo'an and Gu Xiye ran for class monitor in Senior 2 Class 3. He Xinliang, arriving late, explained to Mr. Zheng that he had been helping Yan Ze in the Sports Department, much to Mr. Zheng's disapproval, who urged him to focus on academics for Tsinghua. Xiao Zhuo'an presented herself as passionate and outgoing, aiming to organize efficient class activities to help students focus on studies for the university entrance exam.
Gu Xiye, an introvert, confessed it took great courage to run. She believed a class monitor's role was to mobilize everyone's initiative, participate in class activities, unleash talents, make friends, and create beautiful high school memories beyond just studying. After their speeches, the class proceeded with a secret ballot. Xiao Zhuo'an stopped He Xinliang, asking who he voted for, but he brushed her off.
During the vote counting, Mr. Zheng was astonished when the first two votes were for Yan Ze, calling it a prank and threatening to find the culprit. He Xinliang interjected, playfully suggesting that even if Yan Ze wasn't in their class, "she's always in our heart." Despite Mr. Zheng's attempts to void the votes, almost all subsequent ballots were cast for Yan Ze. Xiao Zhuo'an received one vote (her own), and Gu Xiye abstained.
He Xinliang couldn't resist teasing Xiao Zhuo'an, remarking that some people understood modesty better. Yan Ze, present for the count, thanked everyone for their affection but explained she couldn't be class monitor as she was no longer in their class, advising them to move on. Mr. Zheng then declared Yan Ze the "permanent honorary class monitor" for the class. He then tried to appoint Xiao Zhuo'an as the official class monitor based on the remaining votes.
However, Xiao Zhuo'an refused, stating there was "no point" if she wasn't truly elected and she was "not a second choice." Instead, she proposed Gu Xiye for the role, citing Gu Xiye's longer tenure and better understanding of the class. Xiao Zhuo'an then applied to be the commissary in charge of exercises, aiming to help classmates strengthen their bodies. Gu Xiye also declined the class monitor position, which further frustrated Mr. Zheng, who stormed out, exasperated.
Mr. Zheng summoned Yan Ze to his office. Yan Ze, fearing reprimand, swore she hadn't coerced anyone into voting for her and had only intended to support Gu Xiye, even writing her speech. Mr. Zheng, however, surprised her by asking if she could transfer back to their class. Just then, Xiao Zhuo'an arrived, asking Yan Ze to remain.
Xiao Zhuo'an stated that despite being new, she wanted to be friends and hoped teachers, classmates, and her "friends in the old times" would treat her equally, without "grudges" or "bias." She specifically told Yan Ze that she was "still me" and "haven't changed," hoping Yan Ze would treat her "the way you did before." Yan Ze countered, questioning if Xiao Zhuo'an truly believed she was her old self, asserting that "we're no longer what we were."
Xiao Zhuo'an, however, insisted that Yan Ze had changed, but Gu Xiye hadn't. During physical education class, Mr. Han announced upcoming physical strength tests. Several male students admitted they couldn't run the required 1000 meters. Xiao Zhuo'an, now acting as the class's commissary in charge of exercises, offered to organize intensive training and boldly suggested that He Xinliang, an outstanding athlete, assist her in helping classmates improve their physical fitness.
Despite He Xinliang's clear reluctance, Mr. Han agreed, warning He Xinliang not to bring shame to the basketball team and holding him accountable if the students failed. During warm-ups, Xiao Zhuo'an deliberately positioned herself near He Xinliang, who noticeably tried to avoid her. Witnessing this, Gu Xiye looked visibly upset.
Later, Gu Xiye approached Yan Ze, who was the head of the Sports Department, asking if it was possible to join, even though it wasn't the recruiting season for Senior 2 students. Yan Ze, despite initial hesitation, agreed to help her. He Xinliang's frustration mounted as he felt constantly harassed by both Xiao Zhuo'an, in her new role as commissary in charge of exercises, and Gu Xiye, now a cadre in the Sports Department.
He angrily sought out Yan Ze, who was with Ji Xiao, to complain. He Xinliang accused Yan Ze of "abusing her official power" by pulling strings for Gu Xiye and Xiao Zhuo'an, which made him miserable and disrupted his basketball playing. Yan Ze clarified that Xiao Zhuo'an's position as commissary was her own doing, not hers, but admitted to helping Gu Xiye join the Sports Department.
Ji Xiao, intervening, acknowledged that "pulling strings" wasn't ideal, but also suggested that He Xinliang, who had finally gotten a chance to play basketball, shouldn't be bothered. Yan Ze expressed her dilemma, torn between her friendship with He Xinliang and Gu Xiye. Later, Mr. Han confronted Yan Ze, accusing her of pulling strings to get Gu Xiye into the Sports Department.
Yan Ze defended her decision, stating that the Sports Department was a non-profit student organization and they should be grateful for anyone willing to contribute. Mr. Han, however, claimed the Cultural and Recreational Department opposed Gu Xiye's entry, implying their head, Ms. Gu, was siding with Xiao Zhuo'an. He demanded Yan Ze remove Gu Xiye, but Yan Ze staunchly refused.
Their argument escalated with threats to expose each other's secrets, including Yan Ze's alleged "back door" dealings to Mr. Zheng and Mr. Han's "courting Gu" photos on Tieba. Gu Xiye, who overheard the entire exchange, appeared visibly upset, though she told Yan Ze she was "used to it." Gu Xiye mused that while being good-looking might attract fleeting attention, it was "completely different from getting true affections."
The school announced a friendly match between the first and second grades and the third grade to prepare Senior 3 student-athletes for their upcoming physical specialty exam. During a training session, Xiao Zhuo'an conspicuously hung a large banner on the basketball court that read, "Cool and handsome, Xinliang is the best of Yangming," in support of He Xinliang. Mortified, He Xinliang ordered her to take it down, calling it "disgraceful." When she refused, he left in a huff.
He Xinliang later confided in Mr. Han and a friend that he was deeply annoyed by being "harassed by two pretty girls" (Xiao Zhuo'an and Gu Xiye) and wished to play basketball undisturbed. He complained that no one was helping him. Mr. Han, feeling helpless, explained he couldn't do much since Gu Xiye was in the Sports Department and Xiao Zhuo'an was favored by Ms. Gu.
He Xinliang then declared he would not play in the upcoming match, but Mr. Han vehemently forbade it. Early one morning, Yan Ze, in her pajamas, went downstairs to dispose of trash, only to find Ji Xiao waiting outside her building. Startled, she rushed back inside to quickly change, later joking that she "already looks good so I don't need makeup." Ji Xiao revealed he wanted to give her a surprise and took her to a museum.
They spent the morning touring the exhibits. Although Yan Ze wasn't particularly interested in the artifacts, she assured Ji Xiao that she "liked it a lot," not wanting him to think she was bored. Afterward, they went to a Western restaurant. During their meal, two foreign women blew a kiss at Ji Xiao. Yan Ze was immediately annoyed, questioning why he didn't refuse them and remarking that they might think he accepted it.
Ji Xiao, asking her to lower her voice, explained it was merely a "common salutation" and assured her he wouldn't contact them. He then calmly advised her on how to use a different knife for her meal. Still visibly unhappy, Yan Ze declared she was finished eating. To lift her spirits, Ji Xiao played a piano piece, dedicating it to his "lovely girl," accompanied by a message about pursuing one's desires and dreams with uncommon courage.
Episode 16 Recap
Ji Xiao walked Yan Ze home, and they made plans to meet at the school library the following day. Upon returning home, Yan Ze confided in Gu Xiye about her exhausting day. She felt that she and Ji Xiao were from entirely different worlds, as she had no interest in the things he enjoyed, such as the paintings, calligraphy, and ancient artifacts they saw at the museum. She had to pretend to be interested, which left her neck aching.
She also recounted their visit to a French restaurant where she couldn't understand anything, and how a blonde woman had ordered a drink for Ji Xiao and made a suggestive gesture. Gu Xiye dismissed it as a common salutation and advised Yan Ze to focus on improving her studies with Ji Xiao instead of dwelling on irrelevant matters. Yan Ze, however, wondered if expressing a little anger wouldn't hurt, to which Gu Xiye replied, "As long as you're pleased."
The next day, Yan Ze arrived at the school library to find Ji Xiao already there, which made her angry. Ji Xiao immediately apologized, explaining that his cousin had advised him to always apologize to a girl who is upset, regardless of whether he did anything wrong. When Yan Ze asked why he wasn't curious about the reason for her anger, Ji Xiao promptly asked, leaving her speechless. He Xinliang then joined them, teasing Yan Ze for making a scene.
He complained about Xiao Zhuo'an's cheerleaders being a constant bother. Just as he spoke, Liu Xichuan arrived and asked if Xiao Zhuo'an's cheerleaders were related to the upcoming basketball friendly match. He Xinliang, Ji Xiao, and Yan Ze remained silent. Under Liu Xichuan's implied threat, He Xinliang confirmed it was indeed about the match.
Liu Xichuan declared she would not let Xiao Zhuo'an have her way and left, prompting Ji Xiao to wonder why Liu Xichuan was also against Xiao Zhuo'an, a comment Yan Ze found rather clueless. On the day of the friendly match, Gu Xiye set up cutouts of Rukawa Kaede and He Xinliang, along with banners praising He Xinliang as "the best of Yangming."
Xiao Zhuo'an, however, scoffed at Gu Xiye, calling her "stupid" for not knowing He Xinliang detested Rukawa Kaede, and boasting that she knew all of He Xinliang's likes and dislikes from childhood. Gu Xiye was visibly hurt. Meanwhile, He Xinliang informed Mr. Han that he no longer wanted to play in the match, expressing his annoyance at the noisy cheerleaders ruining what could have been a good game.
Mr. Han, surprisingly, agreed with He Xinliang's view that basketball is a team game that shouldn't be overshadowed by individual interests. He eventually persuaded He Xinliang to return to the court. Once back, He Xinliang saw Gu Xiye's display and stated he disliked it, but disliked Xiao Zhuo'an's efforts even more. He told Gu Xiye that she and other girls didn't understand basketball; they were just there for the handsome guys, without grasping the meaning of sportsmanship.
He added that even his parents didn't understand. Gu Xiye, happy that He Xinliang was sharing something personal for the first time, removed her display. She told him she understood that sportsmanship was about fair competition, and He Xinliang then left the court. To counter Xiao Zhuo'an, Liu Xichuan arrived with her own banner, "MVP of all-Yan Hai," and a cheering squad to support Yan Hai.
Later, He Xinliang called Yan Ze out of her classroom, promising to help her get to know him thoroughly. They climbed over the school wall, sharing many amusing stories. He then took her to a barbershop that Xiao Zhuo'an had previously introduced him to. He Xinliang recalled the time Yan Ze had previously expressed her feelings for him (which Yan Ze insisted was an accident), noting it was the first time he had ever refused a girl.
He shared his belief that an ambiguous attitude causes the most pain, and therefore, he wanted to be his true self—liking what he liked and hating what he hated. Yan Ze then suggested that He Xinliang should "enlighten Ji Xiao" about his overly polite behavior, such as accepting cards and drinks from other girls. He Xinliang agreed that Ji Xiao's actions were indeed "lame." Just then, Mr. Han entered the barbershop for a haircut.
He Xinliang and Yan Ze quickly put on wigs, attempting to impersonate salon staff and escape, but Mr. Han easily saw through their disguise. He Xinliang took full responsibility, but Mr. Han insisted that both of them would be punished for skipping class and must be taken to Director Zheng. He Xinliang then used Mr. Han's own presence at the barbershop during school hours as leverage, pointing out his hypocrisy.
Faced with exposure, Mr. Han relented on taking them to Director Zheng but still marched them back to school. On their way back, they unluckily ran into Director Zheng, who questioned Yan Ze and He Xinliang about why they were not in class. Mr. Han quickly covered for them, claiming he was taking them to the canteen for voluntary labor, explaining that experiencing life's hardships would help them cherish school life. Director Zheng accepted the explanation.
At the canteen, a ma'am asked Mr. Han to write the daily menu on the blackboard. Mr. Han, in turn, tasked He Xinliang and Yan Ze with the job. He Xinliang wrote down the menu and signed off with "Thank you." Yan Ze noticed that He Xinliang's handwriting was exactly like Ji Xiao's. She then asked if he had been the one to write her a thank you note in the past.
He Xinliang confirmed it, much to Yan Ze's surprise, as she realized the note hadn't been from Ji Xiao. After they finished cleaning the canteen, Yan Ze mentioned she was hungry. He Xinliang offered to take her to the same French restaurant she had visited with Ji Xiao, telling her it was important to "pick yourself up from where you've fallen." He reminisced about his childhood mischief, admitting he never regretted those actions and often missed those who had been scolded alongside him.
Episode 17 Recap
He Xinliang took Yan Ze to the French restaurant they had visited with Ji Xiao previously. At the restaurant, He Xinliang asked the waiter for a Chinese menu and told Yan Ze to order whatever she liked. Yan Ze remarked that she and Ji Xiao had dined there before, but she could not read anything on the menu last time, so she did not know what to order.
He Xinliang reiterated that he was taking responsibility, so she could order freely. Later, a foreign woman offered He Xinliang a drink and a note. He Xinliang returned the drink, stating he was a minor and could not drink, and also refused to give her his phone number. He then advised Yan Ze that when one has no feelings for someone, it is best to refuse them directly and unambiguously, without any hesitation.
Yan Ze then asked He Xinliang if he liked her. He Xinliang, quite alarmed, loudly declared that he had absolutely no feelings for her and had always considered her a buddy, never a girl. He then turned the question back to Yan Ze, asking if she liked him. Yan Ze replied that her opinion was the same as his. Meanwhile, Ji Xiao, holding a cotton candy, anxiously waited in the classroom for Yan Ze, wondering why she had not returned.
The Geography teacher walked in and asked Ji Xiao why he had missed the tutorial for the geography competition. He apologized, explaining he had forgotten because he was out buying something. She noticed the cotton candy and asked if it was for Yan Ze. Ji Xiao admitted it was a thank you gift for Yan Ze's help with exam review.
The teacher expressed understanding, telling him that in life, one must know what they truly desire and what they can accomplish to better pursue the people and things they like. She compared life to a train journey, where getting off at every station to see the sights might delay one's arrival at the destination, and the people accompanying them might change. She then told Ji Xiao to go home and remember to turn off the lights.
Later that evening, Yan Ze called He Xinliang from her doorstep to let him know she had arrived home safely. While on the phone, she suddenly realized she had left her backpack in the classroom. She started to panic, worrying about how she would explain it to her parents over the weekend, imagining a scolding. As she was speaking to He Xinliang, she noticed Yan Hai sitting dejectedly outside her house. She quickly hung up to check on him.
Yan Hai told her that things with Liu Xichuan were completely over, and he would never like her again. Yan Ze pressed him for details, and Yan Hai revealed he had discovered that Liu Xichuan was only cheering him on to spite Xiao Zhuo'an. He felt used, like a mere tool for her to show off. He decided he would truly give up on Liu Xichuan and focus on playing basketball to achieve his dreams.
Meanwhile, Ji Xiao stood below Yan Ze's window, calling her phone repeatedly, but Yan Ze, engrossed in her conversation with Yan Hai, did not hear it. He softly called her name, but still received no response. He then decided to gently tap her window with a small stone to get her attention, but accidentally shattered the glass. The unexpected sound startled both Yan Ze and Yan Hai. Yan Hai looked down and identified Ji Xiao.
Yan Ze quickly went downstairs, where Ji Xiao, holding the now misshapen cotton candy, looked dejected as he asked why she had gone out without inviting him. Yan Ze explained that she had considered inviting him but assumed he would not skip class. Hearing this, Ji Xiao was pleased and declared he would not hold it against her. Yan Ze then asked Ji Xiao if he had ever written her a "thank you" note. Ji Xiao denied it.
This again led Yan Ze to believe that the note was not from Ji Xiao. Feeling a headache from the strong wind, Ji Xiao soon departed. Later, He Xinliang went to Yan Ze's classroom. Finding the door locked, he climbed in through the transom window. After retrieving her backpack, he attempted to jump back out but accidentally fell.
Back at Yan Ze's house, she and Yan Hai were attempting to patch up the broken window with tape when Yan Ze's father arrived home. Upon discovering the shattered glass, he became furious and demanded to know who was responsible. Yan Ze immediately pointed to Yan Hai, who, prompted by Yan Ze, reluctantly confessed. Yan Ze's father, boiling with anger, chased Yan Hai around the house, attempting to hit him, with Yan Ze trying to intervene.
Once her father was exhausted, they all settled on the sofa. He then asked to see Yan Ze's homework. Yan Ze, feigning to see Yan Hai off, secretly hoped he would retrieve her backpack from school. Yan Hai initially refused but found the backpack waiting at the doorstep when he stepped outside. Believing Ji Xiao had delivered her backpack, Yan Ze joyfully texted him her thanks.
She also shared how she had shifted the blame for the broken window onto Yan Hai. Ji Xiao, who was reading with Liu Xichuan at the time, showed her the message. Liu Xichuan read it and exclaimed that they had done a brilliant job.
She saw this as an opportunity, stating that as Ji Xiao's cousin and Yan Ze's former club president, she felt responsible for their mistakes and would use this to apologize to Yan Hai, ensuring he could not avoid her.
Episode 18 Recap
Yan Ze enthusiastically declared her intention to start studying diligently for the college entrance examination that very day, asking Ji Xiao if she could approach him with questions, to which he readily agreed. Meanwhile, in another classroom, Gu Xiye had placed breakfast on He Xinliang's desk. Xiao Zhuo'an discovered it and announced her plan to discard it.
Gu Xiye confronted her, but Xiao Zhuo'an, proclaiming her over-a-decade-long friendship with He Xinliang and stating that no one could pursue him without her approval, defiantly threw the breakfast away. Their teacher, Mr. Zheng, then announced the mid-term exam for the following Monday, eliciting groans from the students, including Yan Ze, who had just vowed to study.
The teacher stressed the exam's importance for assessing their chosen paths in liberal arts, while also encouraging them to find self-discovery, problem-solving, and joy in learning, rather than focusing solely on grades. She strictly warned against cheating or intentionally underperforming. Xiao Zhuo'an informed Mr. Zheng of He Xinliang's absence, and Mr. Zheng confirmed that He Xinliang had taken leave due to a sprained ankle, a piece of news that seemed to concern both Xiao Zhuo'an and Gu Xiye.
He Xinliang was at the hospital with Mr. Han and Yan Hai. Despite He Xinliang's attempts to downplay his injury as a mere sprain from walking, Mr. Han, concerned about a potential bone fracture, pressed him for the truth, even threatening to bar him from the basketball team. He Xinliang finally confessed that he had climbed through a classroom window to retrieve Yan Ze's bag after they had skipped class, and fell due to unfamiliarity with the layout.
Yan Hai remarked that He Xinliang had, in a way, saved Yan Ze from a potentially worse situation with her uncle. Mr. Han, still irritated, ordered He Xinliang to write a self-criticism. Later that day, Yan Ze struggled with her math homework, complaining to Ji Xiao that she couldn't even understand the problem statements. Ji Xiao patiently explained a question, but Yan Ze, still confused, pretended to understand to avoid appearing foolish.
Gu Xiye then arrived and invited Yan Ze to visit He Xinliang, and the three of them went to the hospital. He Xinliang and Yan Ze immediately began bickering. After Ji Xiao and Gu Xiye left the room, Yan Ze returned, asking He Xinliang to tutor her in math. She admitted she couldn't grasp Ji Xiao and Gu Xiye's explanations and felt too embarrassed to ask them for further clarification, as it would make her feel stupid.
He Xinliang, after some initial reluctance and teasing, agreed to help. Yan Ze discreetly returned to the hospital for tutoring after Ji Xiao and Gu Xiye had left. She found He Xinliang surrounded by elderly patients and their families, who had misunderstood his friends' visit as a farewell ceremony and believed he was gravely ill. Yan Ze, to He Xinliang's annoyance, played along with the misunderstanding before starting their math session.
He Xinliang quickly became frustrated by Yan Ze's lack of basic knowledge, even suggesting she give up. However, when Yan Ze dramatically feigned despair and began to pack her things, He Xinliang relented, agreeing to continue. He told her that he himself was a "hard-working" student, not a "talented" one, implying that through effort, she could improve. During one of their daily tutoring sessions, Ji Xiao unexpectedly returned to the hospital.
He paused outside the door, listening to their familiar and comfortable bickering, and, feeling disheartened, left without interrupting them. Meanwhile, Liu Xichuan sought out Yan Hai to apologize. However, Yan Hai, determined to end their connection, rejected her apology and declared that he no longer liked her, stating his affection was now for Xiao Zhuo'an. He intentionally showed Liu Xichuan a photo of Xiao Zhuo'an from his wallet.
Infuriated by this, Liu Xichuan told Yan Hai that they should never speak to each other again and stormed away. After witnessing Yan Ze and He Xinliang together, Ji Xiao became more proactive in tutoring Yan Ze. He explained a problem and then asked her to reiterate the solution to ensure she understood. When Yan Ze couldn't, Ji Xiao became visibly angry, questioning why she hadn't asked if she was confused. Yan Ze, flustered, tried to defend herself.
Ji Xiao then asked if she was afraid of him, which she denied before leaving the classroom. Ji Xiao, still upset, went directly to the hospital to confront He Xinliang. He asked if He Xinliang had been secretly tutoring Yan Ze. He Xinliang admitted it, explaining that Yan Ze was afraid Ji Xiao would consider her unintelligent, and therefore sought help from him. Ji Xiao, seeking to understand, asked about He Xinliang's teaching methods.
He Xinliang explained that Yan Ze's foundation was too weak for their typical "easy-to-understand" approaches. He then offered to turn Yan Ze away the next time she came for tutoring. As Ji Xiao left, He Xinliang reiterated his intention to drive Yan Ze away, despite Ji Xiao's objections.
After Ji Xiao departed, He Xinliang sighed, admitting to himself that he felt "a little bit upset," a comment which an elderly patient nearby misinterpreted as a physical ailment, immediately rushing to call a doctor.
Episode 19 Recap
Yan Ze called He Xinliang to tell him she would not be coming for tutoring that day, but He Xinliang surprised her by telling her not to come first. He Xinliang then informed her that Ji Xiao was the one who helped carry her school bag back, a revelation that delighted Yan Ze. On her way back to the classroom, Yan Ze encountered Xiao Zhuo'an, who asked about their "Four-person Study Group," noting that the name sounded "countrified."
When Yan Ze confirmed its existence, Xiao Zhuo'an insisted that if it involved He Xinliang, it involved her too, and demanded to know its location. Yan Ze refused, telling her she would "never know where it is" and to "give up." Xiao Zhuo'an vowed she would find it anyway. Later, Xiao Zhuo'an secretly followed Gu Xiye to the hospital, where He Xinliang was recovering. Upon seeing her, He Xinliang was unwelcoming.
Xiao Zhuo'an expressed concern for his injury and again tried to join their study sessions, citing her good grades. He Xinliang firmly told her, "I don't want to study with you," and bluntly dismissed her, advising her to study at home and not "hang around in front of me," as it made him "dizzy." During a chemistry experiment, He Xinliang, whose foot had healed, returned to class.
Distracted by his presence, Gu Xiye accidentally knocked over an alcohol bottle, spilling alcohol onto her clothes. Unaware, her clothes caught fire. Xiao Zhuo'an quickly righted the bottle. Gu Xiye, misunderstanding, thought Xiao Zhuo'an had caused the incident. Yan Ze rushed over to confront Xiao Zhuo'an. At that moment, He Xinliang noticed Yan Ze's clothes were also singed. He quickly used a towel to put out the flames and pulled Yan Ze into the ladies' room.
There, he instructed her to "take off your trousers" to remove the burned fabric. Yan Ze, misinterpreting his words, slapped him. Meanwhile, Gu Xiye confronted Xiao Zhuo'an, asking why she had done it. Xiao Zhuo'an retorted, blaming Gu Xiye for being distracted and defiantly admitted to the act, which caused an uproar among their classmates. Yan Ze soon realized her mistake regarding He Xinliang.
She profusely apologized to him, calling him a "Master" for saving her and asking him to "please find me another pair of trousers." He Xinliang initially refused, but reluctantly went to find a solution. Unable to find Gu Xiye and not knowing other girls' names, he called Xiao Zhuo'an, asking her to retrieve a pair of pants from the girls' dormitory for Yan Ze.
Xiao Zhuo'an expressed joy that He Xinliang thought of her in a time of need, believing it meant there was "still hope for me." However, He Xinliang told her he did not welcome her back, reminding her that from the moment she chose to leave, he would never forgive her. Xiao Zhuo'an brought the pants to Yan Ze, who was surprised to see her.
Xiao Zhuo'an accused Gu Xiye of taking He Xinliang from her, claiming she should have been with He Xinliang two years ago, but he had "pretended not to know anything." Yan Ze staunchly defended Gu Xiye, believing there was a misunderstanding and that Gu Xiye, being low-profile, would not "take away your boyfriend." Xiao Zhuo'an then described Gu Xiye as proud and conceited, suggesting she disdained easily obtained things and would only target a friend's boyfriend for the challenge.
Yan Ze firmly rejected this characterization, asserting that Gu Xiye was "not what you think" and that it was "not the reason why you can bully her." Yan Ze returned to class, lost in thought. Ji Xiao noticed her preoccupation and asked what was wrong. She vaguely attributed it to exam stress and posed a hypothetical question about a best friend liking the same person. Ji Xiao found her question convoluted, and Yan Ze dismissed it as exam pressure.
To motivate her, Ji Xiao promised to take her to an amusement park if she improved her exam ranking by ten spots. Yan Ze was immediately energized and dedicated herself to studying. After the exams, Yan Ze and Gu Xiye went to take photo stickers.
Yan Ze inadvertently brought up Xiao Zhuo'an, asking Gu Xiye if she "cared much about Xiao Zhuo'an," to which Gu Xiye simply replied, "No." Later, Yan Ze, holding the photo stickers, asked her roommate for advice on what to do if her best friend liked the same person she liked. Her roommate suggested two paths: "one is to take, the other is to give up."
Yan Ze then mused that Xiao Zhuo'an must have left previously to avoid conflict with Gu Xiye, only to return later, driven by her feelings, leading to their current rivalry. Yan Ze and Ji Xiao went to the amusement park. Yan Ze was still troubled by her dilemma, expressing uncertainty about whether her actions were "right or wrong" or truly "for the best of the friend."
Ji Xiao advised her that "many times, there is no right or wrong" and that "since you are friends, clear the air, then all is well," as "nothing is impossible to solve." Yan Ze found clarity in his words. Yan Ze then invited Gu Xiye and He Xinliang to join them, and the four friends enjoyed their time together. During a break, Ji Xiao went to buy drinks, and He Xinliang accompanied him.
Yan Ze expressed a desire for roasted sausages, but Ji Xiao deemed them "unsanitary" and suggested eating a proper meal later, to which Yan Ze agreed. He Xinliang had been feeling unwell since the pirate ship ride but had been pretending to be fine. He could no longer hide it from Ji Xiao, who helped him to a bench and told him to wait there while he bought drinks.
While waiting, He Xinliang spotted a roasted sausage vendor and bought one. When Ji Xiao returned, he playfully teased He Xinliang for not waiting. Both Ji Xiao and He Xinliang then presented a roasted sausage to Yan Ze. Gu Xiye mistakenly assumed He Xinliang's sausage was for her, and he did not correct her to avoid awkwardness. Ji Xiao, having initially discouraged Yan Ze from eating the sausages, admitted she "won" and allowed her this "just this once." The four friends continued to interact, sometimes with familiar ease, sometimes with subtle, unspoken feelings intertwined, highlighting the complex dynamics of their cherished friendships.
Episode 20 Recap
Yan Ze cleverly sent Gu Xiye upstairs, claiming she wanted a breath of fresh air and to avoid her parents, with whom she often argued. Downstairs, her parents confronted her for being "bored to see them" and called her "ungrateful." Yan Ze redirected the conversation back to Gu Xiye's birthday plans.
Her father then presented the money her mother and he had "worked so hard to save," instructing Yan Ze to plan the party according to Gu Xiye's previous birthday "spec," but cautioned against extravagance. Yan Ze murmured that Gu Xiye's previous birthday "spec" was already extravagant, then openly complained about their favoritism, noting they spent almost all their savings on Gu Xiye's birthday but wouldn't buy her a liked gift for her own.
Her parents explained that since Gu Xiye's own parents weren't present, they couldn't "disappoint her," which led Yan Ze to feel unloved. Later that night, Yan Ze asked Gu Xiye about her birthday plans. Gu Xiye expressed a desire for a simple celebration, just "a family meal, a cake, and candles." Yan Ze, however, disagreed. She brought out a beautiful dress Gu Xiye had received for her 15th birthday, recalling how stunning Gu Xiye looked that day.
Yan Ze reassured Gu Xiye that she could "continue to be a princess" and promised to handle all the arrangements. Yan Ze organized a birthday party for Gu Xiye. Outside the venue, He Xinliang encountered Xiao Zhuo'an, who declared her intention to give Gu Xiye a "big present" to reveal her true character to everyone.
He Xinliang warned Xiao Zhuo'an not to "make trouble" on Gu Xiye's birthday, emphasizing that he had "nothing to do with her" and found her actions "immoral." He also cautioned her not to make everyone hate her, but Xiao Zhuo'an insisted she would always achieve her goals. Meanwhile, Yan Ze had specially permed her hair for the party, but accidentally ruined it.
Gu Xiye noticed her appearance, and Yan Ze, feeling embarrassed and wishing no one would see her, then bumped into Ji Xiao. In her haste to leave, she accidentally knocked over and shattered a tower of cups, drawing everyone's attention and increasing her humiliation. She ran off, with Ji Xiao immediately chasing after her. He Xinliang, witnessing Yan Ze's distress, also ran after her. He found Yan Ze crying on the steps.
He Xinliang attempted to comfort her, assuring her that her hair looked "quite good" and even joked about getting a similar hairstyle. Yan Ze, however, continued to cry, stating he didn't understand and that "whatever hairstyle fits you" because he was good-looking. Finally, He Xinliang told her that she, too, was "quite good-looking," which finally calmed Yan Ze. He then jokingly added that she was a bit "dirty" with snot and tears.
After comforting Yan Ze, He Xinliang left to check on Gu Xiye, saying she must be too busy alone. Ji Xiao, having witnessed He Xinliang comforting Yan Ze, returned to the party feeling down. He confessed to Gu Xiye that he "should have complimented Yan Ze more," calling her "a very special girl."
When Gu Xiye asked how he would compliment her, Ji Xiao described Yan Ze as "very beautiful today" and noted that her new hairstyle, though different, was "special" and "not at all exaggerated." Yan Ze, returning at that moment, sadly overheard these compliments and mistakenly believed Ji Xiao was saying them to Gu Xiye. Shortly after, Xiao Zhuo'an arrived, dramatically asking if everyone "really knew Gu Xiye."
She then announced her "big present" for Gu Xiye's birthday: Gu Xiye's mid-term cheat sheet. Yan Ze immediately confronted Xiao Zhuo'an, telling her she was "not invited" and "not welcome," and ordered her to leave. Xiao Zhuo'an, undeterred, stated she didn't care and mockingly offered Gu Xiye to Yan Ze as a friend. After Xiao Zhuo'an's departure, Yan Ze thanked Gu Xiye for not exposing her secret.
Gu Xiye reiterated their strong friendship and promised to always protect Yan Ze, confirming she knew the cheat sheet belonged to Yan Ze. The next day at school, Gu Xiye faced widespread gossip, with students speculating that she might have cheated in every exam and secured university admission through dishonesty. He Xinliang quickly stepped in, telling them to stop chatting and focus on their studies. Later, Yan Ze, still troubled, called Ji Xiao outside.
Ji Xiao complimented her hair, calling it "adorable" and "bright." Yan Ze, however, apologized, admitting she had lied. She confessed that the cheat sheet found yesterday was actually hers, and she had cheated because she wanted to go to the amusement park with him and was afraid of failing the exam. She expressed deep remorse, stating she knew she was wrong and offered to immediately confess to their teacher.
Ji Xiao, recognizing her sincerity, asked if she truly realized her mistake and if she would "swear never to cheat again." Yan Ze readily agreed. Ji Xiao then decided to "let it go this time," explaining that "study shouldn't be staked," and he, as the one who proposed the bet, shared some responsibility. He commended Yan Ze for honestly facing her mistake, which he found "more precious than the promise itself."
Yan Ze, relieved, asked if they could still go to the amusement park, to which Ji Xiao agreed, reiterating "just this once." Yan Ze swore earnestly, even adding a comical oath about her feet and head if she ever cheated again. Ji Xiao then encouraged her to return to the classroom and "study hard." Gu Xiye, still upset that He Xinliang hadn't personally wished her a happy birthday, avoided him.
When they crossed paths, He Xinliang sarcastically asked if she was "blind," then explained from his "horizontal sight" she wasn't visible. Yan Ze, noticing Gu Xiye's anger, later asked her if He Xinliang had offended her. Yan Ze, surprised Gu Xiye would be "angry about such trifles," thinking she was "other-worldly," then revealed that He Xinliang had indeed gone to the party.
He had stayed outside to give Xiao Zhuo'an "a lesson" and warn her "not to make trouble," which was why he hadn't come in to greet Gu Xiye. Hearing this, Gu Xiye felt guilty for having "mistaken about him," admitting that he had acted "for my good." Yan Ze described He Xinliang as "casual" but "quite reliable in crunch time," leading Gu Xiye to teasingly ask if Yan Ze liked him.
Yan Ze quickly denied it, calling him "a bad man." Later, at the cafeteria, Yan Ze, Gu Xiye, Ji Xiao, and He Xinliang sat together. He Xinliang, feigning illness, had "no appetite," and Yan Ze encouraged him to "drink some hot water." Yan Ze then proposed they form a team for the practical subject, admitting she couldn't manage it alone. He Xinliang mocked her for having a "low IQ" and accused her of teaming up just to "drag others down."
Ji Xiao, however, agreed to help Yan Ze and, citing "strength in numbers," even convinced a reluctant He Xinliang and Gu Xiye to join. As they attempted to choose a subject (natural sciences, humanities, or arts & sports), the other three were "like zombies," lacking enthusiasm and telling Yan Ze to pick whatever she liked. He Xinliang continued to tease Yan Ze, while Ji Xiao consistently defended her.
Yan Ze then asked Ji Xiao to tell He Xinliang to buy her a snowball snack. He Xinliang flatly refused, arguing that no one ate them in "winter." Yan Ze corrected him, stating it was "spring," but He Xinliang retorted it was "December" and called her "stupid." Gu Xiye offered to go with He Xinliang, but he adamantly refused. Ultimately, Ji Xiao went with Gu Xiye to buy the snack.
After they left, Yan Ze was furious with He Xinliang and ignored him. He Xinliang then snatched Yan Ze's Sports Department work report. As they struggled, both tumbled to the ground just as Gu Xiye and Ji Xiao returned. Yan Ze attempted to explain the earlier incident to Ji Xiao, but he remained cold, ignoring her even when she called his name.
Exasperated, Yan Ze feigned a sprained right ankle, which finally broke Ji Xiao's composure; he rushed over to check on her, asking if she was hurt. Yan Ze accused him of running away and ignoring her, while he claimed he "didn't hear" her. When he asked if her ankle still hurt, she sarcastically retorted that it was "cured by her anger at him." She clarified that the scuffle with He Xinliang was a misunderstanding.
Ji Xiao acknowledged that he knew it was a misunderstanding and had only ignored her to make a "deep impression." Later, Ji Xiao went to the basketball court, where he found He Xinliang, who sarcastically greeted him, remarking that Ji Xiao usually disliked the basketball court "because of the smell." Ji Xiao, cutting off He Xinliang's attempt to explain the misunderstanding with Yan Ze, declared, "I want to compete with you!"
He Xinliang readily accepted, initially suggesting only basketball since he had "saved" Ji Xiao earlier, but Ji Xiao insisted the competition be "serious" and "not only in basketball, but in everything." He Xinliang, looking "extremely forward to that," agreed.
Episode 21 Recap
He Xinliang approaches Ji Xiao, asking if their competition extends to eating, claiming Ji Xiao is impossible to beat. He Xinliang explains his presence in the dining hall means basketball is no longer the priority, and he's attending a "Hongmen banquet." Mr. Zheng, recently promoted to chief director of the Academic Affairs Office at Yangming Middle School, hosts the gathering to express his gratitude.
He states that while the school has excelled in quality education, it must now seriously address the promotion rate of graduates. He emphasizes the school's responsibility as a key institution to send excellent students to top universities. To achieve this, recreational and sports activities will be reduced, and student-athletes' training time will be significantly cut to prioritize academic studies. He announces that the Cultural and Recreational Department and the Sports Department will be merged under unified management.
Everyone remains silent, showing their reluctance and helplessness. Yan Ze asks He Xinliang if he was aware of Mr. Zheng's plan beforehand. He Xinliang confirms that Mr. Zheng had told him, intending to make him an example by having him quit basketball and pursue a top university based on academic performance.
Yan Ze expresses her strong disapproval of Mr. Zheng's methods, stating that he "fawned over" student-athletes when they were useful for achievements, but now that he's promoted, he suppresses them, likening it to "Once the birds are gone, cast aside the bow. After the cunning hare is killed, the hound is boiled." She further worries about working with Xiao Zhuo'an if the departments merge, as Xiao Zhuo'an wouldn't fight for their rights, and she fears being made vice-head.
While gesturing emphatically, she accidentally bumps into Ji Xiao, who had been listening quietly behind them, making the atmosphere awkward. During a subsequent meeting between the Sports and Cultural Departments, Yan Ze and other student-athletes vociferously oppose the merger. When asked to speak, Mr. Han demurs, deferring to Miss Gu. Miss Gu cautiously suggests some benefits of the merger, like streamlining operations.
Xiao Zhuo'an, however, fully supports Mr. Zheng, arguing that his intention is good, as many student-athletes fail due to poor academic performance. Then, Liu Xichuan intervenes, offering a sharp rebuttal. She challenges Xiao Zhuo'an's understanding of Mr. Zheng's true motives, claiming he aims to "kill a chicken to frighten a monkey" by suppressing student-athletes to force all students to focus solely on academic results and promotion rates, disregarding individual student situations.
She asserts that for student-athletes, their professional skills are paramount for their future livelihoods, not just academic scores. Yan Hai, seemingly provoked by Liu Xichuan's blunt assessment of their academic potential, suddenly declares his support for the merger and his intention to focus on academic studies, adding a lighthearted comment about more "beautiful girls" being available from the merged departments. This unexpected turn frustrates Liu Xichuan and others.
He Xinliang, however, understands that Yan Hai's real intention is to avoid being looked down upon by others. While Ji Xiao is in a meeting, Yan Ze calls him out. Initially, he acts somewhat reserved, but eventually adjourns his meeting to meet her. Yan Ze seeks his help regarding the merger of the Cultural and Sports Departments, explaining that Mr. Zheng's plan essentially forces all student-athletes into academic remedial classes, suppressing their specialized activities.
Ji Xiao points out that the self-management committee, student union, and youth league are independent organizations, suggesting she approach the student union chairman or He Xinliang. Yan Ze dismisses He Xinliang as he is "unable to defend himself," but expresses confidence that Ji Xiao can find a solution. Seeing her innocent, pleading eyes, Ji Xiao is moved and agrees to help. Later, as Yan Ze attempts to approach He Xinliang, Xiao Zhuo'an intercepts her.
Xiao Zhuo'an asserts that the merger is a done deal and that Yan Ze's persistent resistance will only provoke Mr. Zheng further. Yan Ze vehemently states that while she doesn't care about the art students, she will never abandon the student-athletes. Xiao Zhuo'an then suggests that Yan Ze's efforts are simply because she doesn't want to work with her after the merger. Yan Ze, disheartened, admits it and leaves.
Afterwards, Ji Xiao takes Yan Ze to eat hotpot to cheer her up, and she happily orders spicy beef. On her way back, Yan Ze encounters Xiao Zhuo'an. Xiao Zhuo'an asks why Yan Ze despises her and why they can't be friends again, noting she hasn't done anything to Yan Ze. Yan Ze retorts that after Xiao Zhuo'an's unexplained departure, she no longer considered her a true friend.
She emphasizes that true friends don't leave without a word, causing pain, especially to Gu Xiye, who changed significantly after Xiao Zhuo'an left. Yan Ze concludes that the three of them can never return to their past friendship.
Xiao Zhuo'an tries to convince Yan Ze that she chose Xiye over her when she left because she thought they were closer, but Yan Ze insists that Xiao Zhuo'an's return has caused Gu Xiye to change again, and that Xiao Zhuo'an doesn't understand the meaning of friendship. After Yan Ze leaves, Xiao Zhuo'an receives a phone call discussing "economic crimes." She then ominously vows to make Yan Ze "re-comprehend the meaning of 'good friends'."
Yan Ze leads a group of student-athletes to protest against Mr. Zheng, demanding to know why he stopped their training right before an upcoming match. Mr. Zheng dismisses their concerns, accuses them of rebellion, and warns them against pushing their luck, claiming his actions are for their and the school's benefit. He then scolds them and threatens disciplinary action, pointing out He Xinliang's absence from the protest as an example of a "sensible" student who immediately returned to his studies.
Mr. Zheng announces that all student-athletes must attend remedial classes during afternoon and evening self-study hours, with all training canceled, and that He Xinliang, due to his excellent academic record and understanding, is exempt from these remedial classes. Undeterred, Yan Ze returns to Ji Xiao, expressing her frustration and disappointment over Mr. Zheng's dismissal and threats of demerits. Ji Xiao reassures her he will help and explains that direct confrontation is counterproductive.
He suggests a strategic approach: convince the school and Mr. Zheng that specialized training actually boosts promotion rates. Ji Xiao proposes seeking help from Miss Wang Zhenhua, a teacher known for truly understanding students, who could potentially influence Mr. Zheng. Yan Ze is skeptical, questioning Miss Wang's effectiveness. She considers a more drastic measure: pulling the power switch in the amphitheater. Later, Yan Ze confronts He Xinliang on the way home from school, asking why he didn't join the protest.
He Xinliang coldly replies that it's "none of his business," that he intends to keep playing basketball, and that Mr. Zheng can't interfere with his personal life. Yan Ze, angered by his perceived selfishness and lack of loyalty, accuses him of being self-serving and challenges him to do something for the collective good. Before the evening self-study, Ji Xiao genuinely approaches Miss Wang for help, and she agrees.
However, Yan Ze, still unconvinced by Miss Wang's influence, takes matters into her own hands and orders He Xinliang to pull the power switch in the amphitheater, bringing Gu Xiye along. Gu Xiye initially believes He Xinliang wants her company, which delights her, but he quickly clarifies that Yan Ze sent them, and he brought Gu Xiye only because he worried she'd slow him down otherwise, a way of showing care while pretending not to.
After they successfully pull the switch, they encounter Xiao Zhuo'an. Xiao Zhuo'an confronts them, warning them that they don't know who Gu Xiye truly is. He Xinliang dismisses her dramatic tone, but Xiao Zhuo'an then cruelly reveals Gu Xiye's secret, declaring that she is "the daughter of a criminal." Enraged by the exposure of her personal secret, Gu Xiye slaps Xiao Zhuo'an.
Later that evening, Yan Ze learns from a friend that Xiao Zhuo'an has spread the word, gathering a group from another school, planning to beat Gu Xiye to "teach her a lesson." Gu Xiye is distraught, feeling that the person who once protected her now intends to harm her. Yan Ze reassures her that she still has her.
Gu Xiye, composing herself, advises everyone to attend class and study as usual the next day, stating that while academic achievements are important, pursuing one's passion makes life meaningful, and being responsible for one's life begins with persisting in dreams.
Episode 22 Recap
The next day at school, Xiao Zhuo'an confronted Gu Xiye, ordering her to stay after school and asking if she was pretending to be deaf. He Xinliang intervened, pulling Xiao Zhuo'an away and reminding her that school was for learning. He challenged Xiao Zhuo'an to fight him instead of constantly resorting to violence as she used to. He Xinliang stated that Gu Xiye had done nothing wrong.
Xiao Zhuo'an retorted that she knew He Xinliang would side with Gu Xiye, which was fine as it would allow her to act without scruples. Annoyed by her stubbornness, He Xinliang called her boring and left. Yan Ze, worried about Gu Xiye, desperately asked her classmates for help, but none were willing to get involved in a crowd fight, stating that Yangming students were typically good students. Ji Xiao and He Xinliang offered their assistance.
He Xinliang jokingly suggested he would only help if Yan Ze kowtowed to him again, which Yan Ze flatly refused. She then insisted that Ji Xiao should not get involved to avoid any blemish on his otherwise impeccable record, highlighting that he was different from a "punk" like He Xinliang and shouldn't hit girls. Ji Xiao, however, maintained he could protect her.
He Xinliang, overhearing Yan Ze's comment, asked who she was calling a punk, claiming he possessed both ability and morality. Gu Xiye then appeared, thanking Yan Ze for her concern. Ji Xiao believed that Xiao Zhuo'an wouldn't actually harm Gu Xiye, given their past friendship. However, Yan Ze explained that Xiao Zhuo'an had a history of violence in middle school, often beating anyone she disliked, with Gu Xiye's parents frequently having to resolve the fallout.
Gu Xiye expressed sadness that it was now her turn to be targeted but insisted that she needed to face her challenges head-on to grow stronger and be able to protect Yan Ze in the future. He Xinliang, hearing this, muttered that Xiao Zhuo'an was "off her head" for her sudden departure and equally sudden return, but Yan Ze gently admonished him. Yan Ze then suggested they go straight home to avoid Xiao Zhuo'an and her group.
Thinking herself clever for choosing to go home instead of the dormitory, Yan Ze believed they had evaded any ambush. However, Xiao Zhuo'an was already waiting for them, challenging them on whether they thought she couldn't find them. Yan Ze tried to put on a brave front for Gu Xiye, telling her to step back and assuring her, "I got you," adding that an imposing manner was more important than words.
Gu Xiye, trembling, stepped forward and declared that she would no longer hide from Xiao Zhuo'an, ready to settle all "new and old grudges" and put an end to their conflict. She asked Xiao Zhuo'an to let Yan Ze go, as the matter concerned only them. Seizing an opportunity, Yan Ze ran back to school and found He Xinliang, tearfully explaining that Xiao Zhuo'an had surrounded Gu Xiye at the bus station.
He Xinliang immediately called out to Ji Xiao, and the two boys rushed to Gu Xiye's aid, instructing Yan Ze to stay put. Ji Xiao asked Yan Ze if she was being bullied, to which she replied no, it was Gu Xiye. At the bus station, He Xinliang and Ji Xiao formed a protective barrier around Gu Xiye. Xiao Zhuo'an challenged He Xinliang to hit her, but he refused, stating he didn't hit girls.
Ji Xiao attempted to mediate, saying violence wouldn't solve anything. Xiao Zhuo'an launched into a furious tirade, claiming she had always been the one to solve problems and that Gu Xiye never truly considered her a friend, only a servant.
She declared that she was no less capable than Gu Xiye and would reclaim everything taken from her, asserting that Gu Xiye was no longer a princess and deserved to suffer so that Xiao Zhuo'an could finally experience being "patronizing" and "high and mighty." He Xinliang, disgusted, accused Xiao Zhuo'an of being insane and making pretentious excuses for her jealousy.
Just then, Yan Ze's father, Andy Yan, arrived with a group of his taxi driver colleagues, causing Xiao Zhuo'an and her gang of young women to hastily flee, with Xiao Zhuo'an crying as she departed. Later, Xiao Zhuo'an reflected on a past incident where she had protected Yan Ze and Gu Xiye from a group of thugs, asserting that their trio, like the band "S. H. E. ," should "stick together through thick and thin."
Back then, Yan Ze had described one of the thugs as a "toad lusting for swan's flesh," leading Xiao Zhuo'an to bravely confront them. She realized that their old friendship was irrevocably broken and that it was time to move on. At home, Andy Yan praised the two boys for their bravery, noting that Yan Ze and Gu Xiye could have been in serious trouble without their intervention.
He suggested inviting Ji Xiao and He Xinliang for dinner to thank them in person. Yan Ze, however, insisted that they had helped her because they were her friends, not because of Gu Xiye, causing a playful argument with her father, who teased that they were probably trying to impress Gu Xiye. Meanwhile, Mr. Zheng summoned Miss Wang to his office, scolding her for prematurely dismissing classes and undermining student discipline.
Miss Wang calmly defended her teaching philosophy, advocating for a student-centered approach over rote learning and forced education. When Mr. Zheng declared he had nothing more to say to someone like her, Miss Wang retorted that she too had more to say, explaining that fostering talent and allowing students to flourish was essential for overall academic success, not just focusing on conventional scores. She concluded that "spoon-feeding education" was useless, leaving Mr. Zheng speechless.
During a school assembly, Mr. Zheng announced Xiao Zhuo'an's punishment: probation and a 10,000-word self-criticism for instigating the fight. Xiao Zhuo'an, instead of a contrite apology, used the platform to declare her regrets about leaving for Shanghai, trusting friends, and, most notably, falling in love with He Xinliang. Infuriated by her defiant and inappropriate public confession, Mr. Zheng immediately pulled her off the stage, threatening to bar her from classes if she didn't complete the extensive self-criticism.
Later, Yan Hai was caught by Mr. Zheng at an internet café, playing the online game "Audition" with a female avatar. Yan Hai had even convinced a girl at a nearby table to speak into his microphone, pretending to be him, after his in-game "husband" demanded a voice chat, causing the other player to realize he was a "damn lady-boy." Mr. Zheng dragged Yan Hai to his office to write a self-criticism.
To Yan Hai's surprise, Gu Xiye, He Xinliang, and Xiao Zhuo'an were already there. Yan Hai, being overly talkative, blurted out the details of their respective punishments: He Xinliang and Gu Xiye for the blackout, and Xiao Zhuo'an for beating Gu Xiye and publicly confessing to He Xinliang. Everyone turned on Yan Hai for his loose tongue.
He Xinliang questioned Yan Hai's choice of game, leading Yan Hai to proudly declare he played "Audition" as a female character, boasting about numerous in-game marriage proposals and a limited-edition Christmas costume. This comment unexpectedly sparked a new argument between Xiao Zhuo'an and He Xinliang.
Xiao Zhuo'an pointedly suggested that He Xinliang and Gu Xiye could spend Christmas together, implying that Gu Xiye harbored feelings for He Xinliang and even bringing up the "South Mountain Wish Tree" where people write their names with their crushes. He Xinliang, visibly uncomfortable, pulled Xiao Zhuo'an away, while Gu Xiye, watching his reaction, mistakenly believed he might actually reciprocate her feelings.
Episode 23 Recap
He Xinliang bluntly addressed Xiao Zhuo'an's feelings, leading to a tense confrontation. Xiao Zhuo'an, admitting she had seen the wish he wrote, recalled their shared past, where they always went to school and home together, studied, and played, making her believe they were mutually in love and just needed to verbalize it. However, she discovered that the name He Xinliang wrote on the wishing tree was not hers.
She recounted how she had once taken him to the wishing tree, explaining that writing one's own name alongside that of a beloved on a red ribbon would ensure everlasting love. He Xinliang had initially claimed to have no one he liked, but eventually wrote a name, refusing to let Xiao Zhuo'an see it before hanging it himself.
In the present, He Xinliang stated clearly that he did not like her, emphasizing that he would not offer platitudes like "you're a good girl" or "we're not suitable" to avoid further misunderstandings. He then challenged her to hit him if it would make her feel better. Returning to the classroom, He Xinliang found Yan Hai playfully calling Ji Xiao "brother-in-law," much to Ji Xiao's shy but evident pleasure.
He Xinliang commented on Ji Xiao's changed demeanor, which Yan Hai attributed to him spending too much time with his "sister." Shortly after, Liu Xichuan approached Yan Hai, asking if he had been caught playing Audition at an internet cafe. She clarified that she didn't look down on the game itself, but on "she-males" who played female characters. Yan Hai blamed He Xinliang for spreading the news.
Liu Xichuan then asked Yan Hai if he believed in fate, suggesting some people are destined to be entangled, but Yan Hai dismissed the idea, causing Liu Xichuan to walk away proudly. As Christmas approached, Ji Xiao's desk was overflowing with gifts from admirers, causing Yan Ze to feel a pang of jealousy. She offered her seat to Ji Xiao, intending to sit with Gu Xiye, only to find Gu Xiye and He Xinliang's desks similarly piled with Christmas gifts.
Annoyed, Yan Ze returned to her seat, sulking and eating an apple. Ji Xiao noticed her mood and asked what was wrong. Yan Ze complained about not receiving any apples. Ji Xiao immediately offered to get her the best apples, even better than those she saw. He promised her a big surprise in two days.
Yan Ze, delighted, later walked home with Gu Xiye, eagerly accepting some of Gu Xiye's apples to create a facade of popularity, even asking Gu Xiye to photograph her surrounded by the "Christmas Apples." She expressed the need to keep her hands free for the "many Christmas Apples" she expected to receive. Ji Xiao arrived at school two days later, as promised, in a car.
Yan Ze, brimming with anticipation, watched as he opened the trunk, only to reveal two large boxes of plain Fuji apples, which he explained his father had flown in for her. Ji Xiao, misinterpreting her earlier desire, believed she simply wanted delicious apples. Yan Ze, disappointed by the lack of decorative wrapping, made an excuse about the apples being too heavy.
She quickly dismissed Ji Xiao's suggestion of giving Gu Xiye a ride home, fearing Gu Xiye might "steal" her apples. Later, He Xinliang teased Ji Xiao for his practical but misguided gift, pointing out that Yan Ze desired a beautifully wrapped "Christmas Apple," not just plain fruit. Ji Xiao, still confused, defended his choice, saying his apples were big, sweet, and practical. He Xinliang then ironically called Ji Xiao "a good person," implying his overly practical approach was unromantic.
The next day, He Xinliang himself was seen at a boutique, but instead of buying a ready-made Christmas Apple, he shyly bought several sheets of wrapping paper, showing his own reluctance to express affection openly. On Christmas Day, a large, beautifully wrapped Christmas Apple appeared on Yan Ze's desk. Ji Xiao, feeling a pang of jealousy, inquired about its sender. Yan Ze, feigning indifference, dismissed it as impractical and merely a "showy display," which Ji Xiao, somewhat disheartened, agreed with.
Meanwhile, Xiao Zhuo'an confronted Gu Xiye, revealing that He Xinliang had written "Gu Xize" on the wishing tree, which was Gu Xiye's name before junior high. Xiao Zhuo'an believed this showed He Xinliang's deep affection and thorough knowledge of Gu Xiye. Gu Xiye, however, explained that she had never gotten close to He Xinliang in junior high because she knew of Xiao Zhuo'an's feelings, and therefore felt she had done nothing to wrong her.
She pointed out that it was Xiao Zhuo'an who had suddenly left without a word. As Yan Ze approached, she overheard Xiao Zhuo'an formally severing ties with Gu Xiye, declaring they were no longer friends. Xiao Zhuo'an then asked Gu Xiye to "give Ze to her" because she didn't want to be alone, leaving Yan Ze feeling like a "ball" being tossed around. On the way to school, Yan Ze encountered He Xinliang and Ji Xiao.
He Xinliang teased her about showing off the Christmas Apples on her QQ Moments. Ji Xiao then asked Yan Ze directly if she truly liked those elaborately packaged apples. Yan Ze, flustered, vehemently denied it. Ji Xiao, however, gently pressed her, saying he had seen her photos on QQ Moments and wished she wouldn't be nervous around him.
He reminded her of their two years as desk-mates and encouraged her to share her true feelings, admitting he often struggled to understand girls' thoughts. Yan Ze, overwhelmed, quickly made an excuse to leave. Later, after a meeting, Ji Xiao waited for Yan Ze and offered her a cola.
He acknowledged his own past misunderstanding, realizing that while she liked "apples" (what she said she wanted), he gave her a box of "pears" (what he thought she wanted, missing the sentiment). This signaled Ji Xiao's growing understanding of Yan Ze's emotional needs, and from then on, the two subtly conveyed their feelings to each other.
Episode 24 Recap
Yan Ze asked Ji Xiao if he had noticed their frequent encounters lately, listing places like the library, the canteen, and the equipment room. Ji Xiao confirmed that these were not coincidental, but rather arrangements made by him because he wanted to understand everything about her comprehensively. Later, Yan Ze confided in Gu Xiye about Ji Xiao's behavior, describing it as "research" rather than mere tracking, as he seemed to observe her everywhere.
Gu Xiye sensed Yan Ze's discomfort and offered to confront Ji Xiao, but Yan Ze quickly stopped her, indicating there was no need. Upon returning to her dorm, Yan Ze's roommates informed her about negative comments circulating on the school forum. They advised her not to take the words to heart, but when Yan Ze insisted, they showed her the posts. The comments were harsh, labeling her as a "toad" aiming for Ji Xiao and questioning his judgment.
Despite her roommates' attempts to console her, suggesting the comments were born of jealousy, Yan Ze was deeply saddened and retreated to her bed, wondering if she truly was incompatible with Ji Xiao. One roommate remarked on Ji Xiao's overwhelming popularity, noting how even someone with good social standing like Yan Ze could face such intense criticism because of him. Yan Ze then called Gu Xiye, seeking her company.
Meeting Gu Xiye late at night, Yan Ze recounted the forum posts, explaining they were likely due to her recent closeness with Ji Xiao. She expressed surprise at Gu Xiye's calm demeanor, admitting she had cried earlier. Gu Xiye, drawing on years of her own experience with public criticism, advised Yan Ze that resisting or refuting such comments was futile. She had learned that the most effective approach was to acknowledge one's flaws and simply live, stating, "I'm not flawless.
I have shortcomings. But I'm living like this anyway." Yan Ze found Gu Xiye's perspective profoundly insightful, though she confessed she hadn't reached that level of emotional resilience and still felt deeply wronged. She thanked Gu Xiye, playfully remarking that she seemed "more perfect now" and "not a normal human." Gu Xiye, however, insisted she still had "human troubles" and joked that she might "trouble" Yan Ze someday. Later, Yan Ze approached Ji Xiao, telling him to stop following her.
She announced her intention to "break the school rules" and "do some bad things to relax," explaining that as the president of the self-management committee, he wouldn't understand her need for such a release. Ji Xiao was perplexed, asking if her plans were dangerous and questioning why she would choose such methods of relaxation. Yan Ze dismissed his questions, stating she couldn't explain it to a student union member like him, and then left.
Ji Xiao was left wondering what was inherently wrong with being a member of the student union. During an evening self-study session, Mr. Zheng insisted on overseeing Mr. Wang's class. Mr. Wang expressed his difficulty teaching under constant scrutiny, but Mr. Zheng suggested he simply "take me as the air." Mr. Wang then used the lesson on "Cyclone" as a coded signal, prompting the students to discreetly leave the classroom.
Mr. Zheng, angered by their escape, chased after them, vowing to bring them back for missed lessons, but was unable to catch them all. Mr. Zheng then encountered Ji Xiao and immediately ordered him to help round up the fleeing student-athletes, handing him a flashlight. Ji Xiao hesitated, asking if being a student union leader made him particularly annoying, especially as part of the self-management committee.
Mr. Zheng strongly refuted this, extolling the committee's organization and principles, and assuring Ji Xiao that his leadership would be respected. Despite Ji Xiao's reluctance, he was compelled to join the chase. When he found some students, they were prepared to face the consequences together. However, Ji Xiao chose to let them go, stating, "We didn't meet today. You didn't meet me either," and directed them to a safe side exit.
As they vanished, Ji Xiao smiled, recalling Yan Ze's earlier words about wanting to do "bad things to relax" and how she believed he, as a student union member, wouldn't understand. Meanwhile, Mr. Zheng discovered Mr. Han and Miss Gu in the school woods. Enraged, he accused them of setting a poor example by "fooling around" instead of focusing on their duties, criticizing their secretive behavior like high school students.
Mr. Han tried to explain he was merely comforting Miss Gu and that it was natural for teachers to form relationships, but Miss Gu urged him to remain silent. Mr. Zheng scornfully dismissed their justifications, demanding to know why they hadn't gone public if their relationship was "reasonable." He chastised them for "flirting" in meetings and for their inappropriate rendezvous in the woods, sternly reminding them to "be a model of virtue." Upset by his reprimand, Miss Gu abruptly left.
Mr. Han, calling out her name, quickly followed. Outside, Miss Gu told Mr. Han they should break up, expressing her frustration with having to date in secret and being publicly scolded. She desired a public relationship and a dignified marriage. Mr. Han desperately pleaded with her, insisting he couldn't break up after working so hard to win her over.
He confessed his dream of buying her a house by the river so she could wake up to beautiful views, admitting he hadn't yet saved enough money for it. Realizing this was his main concern, Miss Gu then asked if he was willing to go public and marry her, to which he enthusiastically agreed. She then revealed a secret: while he might not have a house by the river yet, she did.
Mr. Han's face lit up with joy at the news. Mr. Han later treated his students to a hotpot meal, where he announced three things. First, he and Miss Gu were officially dating. Second, he planned a grand marriage proposal, acknowledging his current financial limitations. He explained that although Miss Gu owned a small apartment by the river, he found it inappropriate to simply move in, as she had saved for years for the down payment.
Therefore, he intended to quit his teaching job after the proposal to open a basketball training club, hoping to earn enough to pay off her mortgage, which he believed would be equivalent to buying her a house himself. Yan Ze initially exclaimed, "Is Miss Gu out of her mind?" She later expressed concern about Mr. Zheng focusing on student-athletes' academic performance and how their basketball team would manage without Mr. Han.
He Xinliang immediately offered to lend Mr. Han money, and both he and Yan Ze, along with other students, voiced how much they would miss him and urged him to stay. Mr. Han, touched by their sentiments, explained he was doing this for love, to put pressure on himself. He Xinliang, in a moment of playful exasperation, then told him to just leave and not contact them again, adding, "Leave as far as you can."
Yan Ze called Ji Xiao and stood outside his apartment building, asking for his help to prevent Mr. Han from quitting his job. Ji Xiao was surprised but pleased by her directness. He initially questioned the appropriateness and effectiveness of their intervention in Mr. Han and Miss Gu's personal affairs, suggesting they find a more sensible solution. Yan Ze, however, insisted on immediate action, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
Ji Xiao then casually mentioned that He Xinliang might arrive by climbing through the window, a peculiar habit he'd had since junior high. Together, they then sought out Miss Gu to learn about her ideal marriage proposal. Miss Gu playfully suggested a proposal in a "spacecraft" before revealing her true preference: a proposal in the school's basketball gym, with Mr. Han wearing a basketball jersey and the specific limited-edition basketball shoes he wore when they used to run together.
Yan Ze diligently noted all these details. Armed with this information, Yan Ze approached He Xinliang, asking if his basketball shoes were a limited edition and inquiring about his shoe size. She then requested to borrow them for Mr. Han's proposal that evening in the basketball gym. He Xinliang confirmed they were limited edition but, recalling Mr. Han asking the same question earlier, refused, calling Mr. Han a "deserter."
Soon after, Xiao Zhuo'an called He Xinliang to inform him she was returning to Shanghai. When He Xinliang had nothing to say, she expressed her feelings directly, telling him his previous words had hurt her. She asserted that while she liked him, she owed him nothing and refused his condescending attitude, hoping he would understand someday if his own feelings were treated in a similar manner.
She concluded by stating she no longer liked him but still sincerely wished him happiness with the person he loved, although she had initially wanted to stay to witness that moment. With a final "Goodbye," Xiao Zhuo'an ended the call.
Episode 25 Recap
Students were busy setting up a romantic proposal scene for Mr. Han on the basketball court. He Xinliang was also present, playing basketball, seemingly indifferent to the preparations. When Yan Ze questioned his presence, He Xinliang retorted that it was a public place and none of her business. He then complained that his current shoes were uncomfortable and hurting him, declaring he needed to change into a better pair, which he claimed was "for myself."
Mr. Han, understanding He Xinliang's subtle gesture, took the new shoes to wear. Everyone present saw through He Xinliang's aloofness and knew he was helping Mr. Han. Shortly after, He Xinliang received a message from Gu Xiye, asking him to meet and talk. Meanwhile, Yan Hai and Liu Xichuan were moving items together. Yan Hai abruptly told Liu Xichuan that they were not a match and that he liked someone else, claiming it was Xiao Zhuo'an.
When Liu Xichuan pressed him, he insisted on keeping his distance, stating, "You keep being the popular school babe. I'm just a humble basketball player. I don't understand why you keep bothering me. I beg you to leave me alone." Liu Xichuan, refusing to believe him, challenged him to show his wallet, convinced it still held her photo. Yan Hai then cruelly attacked her character, saying, "Who do you think you are? You think the world goes around you?
I liked you because of your beauty at first. But the inner you are unlovable. Bad character." Mr. Han expressed his deep gratitude to everyone for helping set up the romantic proposal. He Xinliang, however, still in an aloof mood, called Mr. Han a "hypocrite," a comment Yan Ze immediately challenged. Mr. Han intervened, assuring He Xinliang he understood his feelings.
Yan Hai, still upset from his argument with Liu Xichuan and irritated by the playful interactions between Ji Xiao and He Xinliang, declared he was "down" and announced he was going to an internet cafe to blow off steam. Yan Ze tried to stop him, reminding him of the important day, but Yan Hai insisted he couldn't stand "you flirting," pointing at Ji Xiao and He Xinliang.
Back home, Liu Xichuan logged into a game and found Yan Hai chatting with her. He asked her to turn on her voice chat, explaining he was feeling down and wanted to tell her his "heartbroken story," though he quickly clarified it wasn't a heartbreak since the girl never reciprocated his feelings. He elaborated that the girl was the school's beautiful, smart, and wealthy school babe, from a family so rich he felt unqualified to like her.
Liu Xichuan's character asked if he was only attracted to her beauty and wealth. Yan Hai clarified that the first time he saw her, at a singing competition, he felt a beam of light on her, and was struck by her beautiful, innocent, childlike aura that he wanted to protect. He admitted she had a stubborn streak he liked and often compared herself to others, but still she was the cutest.
He lamented that he treasured her, but she saw him as a mere comparison point and deemed him "good for nothing," a sentiment he agreed with, confessing he had nothing but his love for her. Moved, Liu Xichuan's character told him that his love was enough and he wasn't "nothing." The basketball court lights went dark, then flared up as Ms. Gu Yu stepped into a spotlight.
Mr. Han, holding a ring, walked towards her, knelt, and proposed, asking, "Gu Yu, will you marry me? I love you." Ms. Gu Yu, deeply touched, extended her hand, and Mr. Han placed the ring on her finger, successfully proposing. He Xinliang, observing the scene from the side, found Mr. Han's declaration of love "cheesy." As planned, Gu Xiye then approached He Xinliang and confessed her feelings, saying, "I like you." He Xinliang hesitated, only managing, "But I. . ."
, implicitly rejecting her. Realizing his unspoken refusal, Gu Xiye pressed for a clear answer. Meanwhile, Yan Ze and Ji Xiao were celebrating Mr. Han's successful proposal. Xiao Zhuo'an also arrived at the basketball court. She noticed "Ze" written on He Xinliang's jacket, which reminded her of "Liang Ze" she had seen on a wishing tree previously. Realizing He Xinliang's feelings for Yan Ze, she directly asked him, "Do you like Yan Ze?"
He Xinliang, annoyed, told her to mind her own business and asked why she wasn't leaving for Shanghai as she had planned. Xiao Zhuo'an declared she was "not leaving" until she figured out "who I lost to." When she confronted him again, stating, "The one you like is not Gu Xiye. It's Ze of Yan Ze, right?" , He Xinliang angrily retorted, "None of your business."
Xiao Zhuo'an insisted that she knew him well, as they had grown up together, and that she would uncover the truth about who he truly liked. He Xinliang, agitated, denied liking Yan Ze. Gu Xiye confided in Yan Ze about He Xinliang's rejection, saying he didn't respond to her confession at all. Yan Ze was surprised, while Gu Xiye worried that she was "not good enough."
Yan Ze quickly reassured her, suggesting that He Xinliang might just want to focus on studies until college, or perhaps he was shy and shocked by her confession. She emphasized that He Xinliang would directly reject someone he disliked, so his silence must be due to academic pressure. Gu Xiye agreed with Yan Ze's reasoning, feeling much better. Meanwhile, He Xinliang sat alone, contemplating if he truly liked Yan Ze, questioning if his feelings were obvious to others.
He then received a call from Yan Ze, who immediately scolded him for not giving Gu Xiye a clear answer. He Xinliang retorted that he simply "didn't want to" respond. Yan Ze insisted he should either accept or refuse. He Xinliang then snapped, "Yan Ze, I don't like you." Yan Ze, taken aback, angrily replied that it was none of her business and pressed him about Gu Xiye.
He Xinliang reiterated, "No matter what you see or hear, remember one thing. I, He Xinliang, won't like you. Don't ever think about it no matter what happens." Yan Ze, equally enraged, declared, "I, Yan Ze, won't like you either." Yan Ze complained to her roommate about He Xinliang's "insane" behavior.
Her roommate suggested that He Xinliang might be trying to cover up his feelings for her, theorizing they were like "quarrelsome lovers" who grew closer through arguments and secretly thought of each other despite their verbal sparring. Yan Ze vehemently denied this, insisting she didn't get along with him and hadn't been thinking about him. Over the following days, Yan Ze and He Xinliang frequently crossed paths, with Yan Ze visibly trying to avoid him.
Later, at home, Yan Ze and Gu Xiye were covering books. Yan Ze's mother chided her for not being as compliant as Gu Xiye and for keeping a rotten Christmas apple, reminding her to find someone to give it to. Yan Ze lamented that she still hadn't found the right person. Gu Xiye then mentioned that Yan Ze and He Xinliang had been acting "weird" throughout the holiday.
Yan Ze dismissed the idea, but Gu Xiye pointed out that Yan Ze either changed the subject or gave a "weird smile" whenever He Xinliang was mentioned. That night, Yan Ze found herself sleepless, her mind replaying many past events involving He Xinliang. As a new semester began, Miss Wang announced another open class, which students generally disliked.
She tried to reassure them, telling them to act naturally and not worry about impressing the leaders, as the goal was genuine learning. When Yan Ze asked what would happen if they performed poorly, Miss Wang jokingly threatened to "spank" them, then added it would just mean a bonus deduction for her, encouraging them to relax. Students discussed Mr. Han's potential resignation, wondering if he would truly leave despite the successful proposal and Ms. Gu Yu's understanding nature.
He Xinliang, still seemingly resentful, declared that Mr. Han was "not our brother anymore" if he even considered quitting. To everyone's surprise, Mr. Han appeared, carrying equipment. He Xinliang, still sulking, told him, "Why don't you leave? Marry Miss Gu. Leave us." Mr. Han joked that He Xinliang sounded jealous. He Xinliang responded that no comfort was needed. Mr. Han then promised, "I'll stay till you graduate."
When He Xinliang pressed him to swear, Mr. Han playfully dismissed him, telling him to go to training. The episode concluded with a narration reflecting on the youthful tendency to speak sincerely yet duplicitously, making such words the greatest regrets of youth.
Episode 26 Recap
Yan Ze decided to help Miss Wang enrich the content of the upcoming open class, having realized Miss Wang's good nature and wanting to make amends for previous misunderstandings. She proposed organizing a little game before class and preparing teaching aids like globes and maps. Despite no longer being the class monitor, Yan Ze confidently asserted her social skills. She then addressed the class, asking them to contribute to a class fund for interactive activities to enhance the open class.
While Yan Ze was enthusiastically preparing, some classmates were heard complaining and questioning her motives, wondering where the collected money would go and criticizing her for overexerting herself, especially since Miss Wang had already told them to relax. During a meal, Ji Xiao, who had been the first to support her, expressed concern that she was wearing herself out. Yan Ze, however, reminded him that this was a quality he admired about her.
She also voiced her anxieties about whether her efforts would yield a good outcome for the open class. Yan Ze, after overhearing her classmates' negative comments, confronted Ji Xiao. Hurt and emotional, she asked if he also thought she was making a fool of herself or was being nosy. Ji Xiao reassured her that he only wanted to help and would do anything to support her.
Feeling overwhelmed, Yan Ze said she was tired and left, but not before agreeing to meet Ji Xiao at the stationer the next morning to buy teaching aids. After she left, Ji Xiao pondered what He Xinliang would do in such a situation. The next day, Yan Ze and Ji Xiao had purchased a large amount of teaching aids. When they tried to get a taxi, the driver was rude about the quantity of items.
Ji Xiao, wanting to avoid trouble and save time, quietly offered to pay the driver extra. However, Yan Ze discovered this upon arriving at the school when the driver demanded an exorbitant fare. Enraged, Yan Ze confronted the driver, arguing about the principle of fair pricing, especially since the money was from the class fund. She fiercely stated that her father, also a taxi driver, would never overcharge.
Ji Xiao attempted to calm her and offered to pay the additional amount himself, but Yan Ze remained resolute that it was a matter of principle, not money. She then tearfully expressed her frustration to Ji Xiao, questioning why indifferent people were tolerated while enthusiastic ones like her were blamed and misunderstood. She felt that her efforts were unappreciated, unlike others like Gu Xiye who effortlessly gained affection.
Yan Ze accused Ji Xiao of not supporting her in the argument, making her look unreasonable. Overwhelmed and upset, Yan Ze ran off, unreachable. Panicked, Ji Xiao called He Xinliang, asking for help to find her and wondering how He Xinliang would comfort her, admitting he hadn't found the right way to do so himself. He Xinliang immediately began searching for Yan Ze but couldn't find her anywhere in the school.
He Xinliang eventually found Yan Ze sleeping on a park bench. He woke her up, playfully teasing her and expressing his concern, noting that Ji Xiao was "scared half to death" and had sent him to find her. He tried to call Ji Xiao, but Yan Ze vehemently stopped him, threatening to jump if he revealed her location.
She confided in He Xinliang that she had a lot to say but didn't want anyone else to know, yet couldn't keep it inside. He Xinliang then took her to a cable car, buying her a ticket to ride alone so she could have privacy and assuring her that no one would hear her confessions up there. On the cable car, Yan Ze shouted out her frustrations and insecurities.
She addressed Ji Xiao, feeling he was out of her league, expressed jealousy towards Gu Xiye, whom she wished she could be, and felt like the "extra one" compared to Xiao Zhuo'an and Xiye. She also called out to her parents, lamenting their affection for Xiye and her unwillingness to share their love. Finally, she called out He Xinliang's name. After her cathartic shouting, Yan Ze felt much lighter.
On their way back, she jokingly asked He Xinliang if he liked her, given how kind he had been, to which he playfully denied. Later, Ji Xiao found He Xinliang playing basketball and confronted him, curious where he had taken Yan Ze that made her so happy upon her return. He Xinliang revealed he took her to the cable car and let her ride it alone to vent.
Ji Xiao expressed his frustration, unable to understand why He Xinliang could so easily make Yan Ze smile, a skill he himself couldn't master. He Xinliang reassured him, telling Ji Xiao to be himself, as he was unique, but Ji Xiao insisted that all he wanted was for Yan Ze to be happy. Standing in the rain, their pent-up emotions led to a physical fight, which they continued until exhaustion, eventually lying down together on the wet ground.
After their fight, as the weather cleared, Ji Xiao expressed his intention to give up on Yan Ze and directly asked He Xinliang if he liked her. He Xinliang, while seemingly deflecting the question by looking for his phone, then revealed his change of heart. He admitted that he once believed Ji Xiao was the only one who could make Yan Ze happy and carefree, but he had since realized that one shouldn't place their hopes on others.
With this realization, He Xinliang declared Ji Xiao was "out" of the running. Ji Xiao then confessed he blamed himself more than He Xinliang. Moments later, He Xinliang realized he had lost his phone on the basketball court. Xiao Zhuo'an, passing by, picked up He Xinliang's phone. Scrolling through it, she discovered he had kept his entire message history with Yan Ze, as well as many photos of Yan Ze, while her own messages to He Xinliang were conspicuously absent.
This revelation made Xiao Zhuo'an fully understand that He Xinliang's true affections lay with Yan Ze. Yan Ze apologized to Ji Xiao for her outburst, and he accepted her apology, saying he was sorry too and that it was all over. As Yan Ze prepared to leave in a car, Ji Xiao did not join her.
Instead, he made the difficult decision to let her go, silently wishing her happiness, freedom, success in college, a bright future, and a good life. He concluded their relationship with a quiet "That's it for us." Yan Ze then went to apologize to Miss Wang for skipping classes, especially the open class. However, Miss Wang explained she called Yan Ze to thank her for her significant contributions to the open class.
She praised Yan Ze's innovative games and the positive student feedback, announcing that their class would be awarded "excellent class" status, attributing much of it to Yan Ze's efforts. Yan Ze acknowledged that it wasn't her credit alone and that Ji Xiao deserved thanks too. Miss Wang agreed, revealing that Ji Xiao had worked tirelessly, moving teaching aids, organizing rehearsals, and setting up the classroom.
Realizing the full extent of Ji Xiao's silent support, Yan Ze later asked him why he had helped her so much. Ji Xiao simply replied, "Because you are my desk-mate." Yan Ze was left to ponder his words, wondering if their relationship was truly just that of desk-mates. The episode concluded with a reflection on brotherhood, suggesting that true friends can overcome any obstacle with a fight, resolving issues and strengthening their bond.
Episode 27 Recap
Yan Ze asked Ji Xiao why he always helped her. Ji Xiao simply replied that it was because they were desk-mates. He encouraged her to ask him any questions she had and to always seek his help when needed. Yan Ze then remembered a story Ji Xiao had once told her about six children with varying personalities. Their relationships shifted like plate movements, sometimes embracing tightly, other times colliding and drifting apart.
Yet, one smart child chose to drift alone, ensuring everyone else could remain true to themselves. Understanding the implied meaning of the story, Yan Ze seemed to grasp Ji Xiao's selfless nature and shed tears. Mr. Zheng announced to the class that Xiao Zhuo'an would be transferring back to Shanghai that afternoon due to her parents' work, advising students to see her off if they wished. Gu Xiye had seemingly prepared a letter for Xiao Zhuo'an.
After finishing her transfer procedures in Mr. Zheng's office, Xiao Zhuo'an emerged to find He Xinliang waiting for her. They immediately fell back into their old playful habits, teasing and sparring. Xiao Zhuo'an returned He Xinliang's phone, telling him she now knew all his secrets. Gu Xiye, who had intended to give Xiao Zhuo'an her letter, saw their cheerful reunion and hesitated, keeping the letter.
As He Xinliang walked Xiao Zhuo'an away, she confessed her reluctance to leave and her worries for him and Gu Xiye. He Xinliang assured her they could take care of themselves, advising her to control her temper in Shanghai. He then sincerely apologized for his previous actions, acknowledging her as a very good girl and wishing her happiness. The old animosity between them dissipated, and they both smiled genuinely.
Upon hearing that Xiao Zhuo'an had left, Yan Ze frantically ran out, encountering He Xinliang who confirmed it was too late, as Zhuo'an was likely already at the airport. He Xinliang questioned why Yan Ze, supposedly Zhuo'an's "deadly foe," was so eager to see her off. Yan Ze clarified that their past disagreements stemmed from her jealousy; she felt Xiao Zhuo'an and Gu Xiye were closer and a better match in every way, and that she felt ignored.
He Xinliang playfully called her "careless." He then asked about her current relationship with Ji Xiao. Yan Ze firmly stated they were merely desk-mates, a relationship that had always been the same, and that she had "figured things out" regarding him. She likened her past admiration for Ji Xiao to Cinderella receiving a crystal shoe, realizing it didn't fit her and needed to be returned.
Yan Ze then shifted the conversation, asking He Xinliang why he hadn't given Gu Xiye a clear answer to her feelings, mentioning something Xiao Zhuo'an had said about their junior high days. He Xinliang grew agitated, dismissing Zhuo'an's comments as "delusions" and stating he wanted to confront her about it. He then swore to Yan Ze, "I've never liked Gu Xiye." Unbeknownst to them, Gu Xiye, on her way to deliver her letter to Xiao Zhuo'an, overheard He Xinliang's declaration.
Heartbroken, she lamented that she was so unloved and didn't even have a true friend, then ran off. Yan Ze and He Xinliang immediately gave chase. Distraught and distracted, Gu Xiye failed to notice an oncoming car and was struck. Overwhelmed with self-blame, Yan Ze rushed Gu Xiye to the hospital.
A doctor soon emerged from the operating room, explaining that Gu Xiye desperately needed a blood transfusion and had a rare RH-negative blood type, which neither Yan Ze nor her parents possessed. As Yan Ze wept in despair, He Xinliang tried to comfort her. Suddenly, Yan Ze remembered that Xiao Zhuo'an also had RH-negative blood.
He Xinliang quickly called Xiao Zhuo'an, who, upon hearing the news, dropped her luggage at the airport and immediately took a taxi to the hospital, urging the driver to speed up. At the hospital, Xiao Zhuo'an confirmed her blood type matched Gu Xiye's and offered to donate. Yan Ze tearfully thanked Zhuo'an and apologized for their past behavior. Xiao Zhuo'an smiled, saying, "We are friends." She jokingly mentioned the trouble of leaving her luggage behind due to the urgent call.
Yan Ze asked if Xiao Zhuo'an was truly leaving. Zhuo'an explained that her parents' business move to Shanghai was the reason, and she had no choice. She clarified that she wasn't running away because of a fight and hoped to build a better life there. Yan Ze then handed Xiao Zhuo'an Gu Xiye's letter, emphasizing its importance. All past misunderstandings and animosity vanished as the friends embraced tightly. They affirmed their bond as "S. H. E."
(their friend group name), pledged to "live and die together," and promised to never forget each other. Xiao Zhuo'an reassured Yan Ze, telling her not to be afraid because she would always be there for her. Gu Xiye remained unconscious despite being out of critical danger. Watching her parents by Gu Xiye's bedside, calling her name as she murmured in her sleep, made Yan Ze feel deeply conflicted. He Xinliang gently led her out of the hospital room.
In the taxi, Xiao Zhuo'an opened Gu Xiye's letter. In it, Gu Xiye confessed that she had wanted to reconcile with Zhuo'an since her return but couldn't overcome her pride. She expressed her admiration, need, and reluctance to see Zhuo'an go, admitting she already missed her. She then asked if Zhuo'an would agree to make up if she put aside her ego, concluding with a simple, "Let's make up."
Reading the letter, Xiao Zhuo'an was moved to tears, then chuckled, accepting the childish plea and agreeing, "Fine. Let's make up." He Xinliang walked Yan Ze home, reassuring her not to worry as the doctors had confirmed Gu Xiye was out of danger. Yan Ze then reflected on her past.
She recounted how she had invited Gu Xiye to live with her after her family's misfortune, sharing her room, pocket money, snacks, and toys, as Gu Xiye had once done for her. However, she never expected to share her parents. She confessed her regret for feeling jealous that Gu Xiye had "taken" some of her parents' love.
Seeing Gu Xiye lying in the hospital bed, calling for "Mom and Dad," with only her adoptive parents by her side, made Yan Ze realize how much pain Gu Xiye must have felt. She acknowledged her own privilege of having a loving family and felt ashamed of her previous narrow-mindedness. He Xinliang acknowledged that Gu Xiye's biological parents surely loved her too, but praised Yan Ze's family for providing Xiye with genuine warmth.
Yan Ze declared her decision to "give" her parents to Gu Xiye, so Xiye could experience the warmth of a complete family, and promised to reflect on her own shortcomings. When He Xinliang asked if she was scared to be alone, Yan Ze confidently stated she feared nothing. He Xinliang jokingly reminded her that she was "not a girl" and told her to call him if she needed anything. He Xinliang then spent the entire night sitting downstairs outside Yan Ze's apartment building.
Episode 28 Recap
Early in the morning, Yan Ze stepped downstairs and found He Xinliang waiting outside. He Xinliang claimed he was merely passing by, but their neighbor quickly intervened, telling Yan Ze that He Xinliang had been squatting downstairs all night, making her think he was a thief. Yan Ze confronted He Xinliang, asking if he had truly stayed there all night. He Xinliang quickly made an excuse about the dazzling sunlight and tried to leave, but Yan Ze followed him.
They had breakfast together, and Yan Ze questioned why He Xinliang was not at school. He Xinliang playfully retorted that his grades were so good it didn't matter if he skipped, but for Yan Ze, whose grades were poor, it was a different story. Yan Ze explained that she had taken leave due to a family emergency and had to visit Gu Xiye at the hospital that afternoon.
After their meal, He Xinliang offered to drive Yan Ze home and then to the hospital, but she declined, telling him to go on his way. At the hospital, Yan Ze’s parents felt a sudden tremor and realized it was an earthquake. Remembering Yan Ze was at home, they rushed out of the hospital, frantically calling her. Meanwhile, He Xinliang raced to Yan Ze’s house and carried her to safety.
Yan Ze answered her parents’ call, reassuring them that she was safe and with He Xinliang, which finally eased their worried hearts. Yan Ze’s mother then looked at the lunchbox in her hand and remembered Gu Xiye, still inside the hospital. She attempted to rush back to save her, but a doctor stopped her, assuring her that hospital staff would manage the situation. Yan Ze brought all their household items to the hospital.
Later, she overheard her mother tearfully apologizing to Gu Xiye for instinctively leaving her behind to find Yan Ze during the earthquake. Yan Ze's mother confessed that despite Gu Xiye being an excellent child, even more outstanding than Yan Ze in many ways, and her desire to have a daughter like her, the primal instinct to protect her own child took over.
Yan Ze, deeply moved, was happy to hear this, while Gu Xiye, lying in her hospital bed, also shed tears. Yan Ze's parents eventually left, entrusting Gu Xiye's care to Yan Ze for the night. Yan Ze, after saying goodbye to her parents, told them she loved them. Soon after, He Xinliang called Yan Ze, checking if she was okay and if she had arrived at the hospital, calling her "heartless" for not updating him.
Yan Ze reassured him that both she and Gu Xiye were fine. Gu Xiye overheard their conversation and remarked that He Xinliang was very kind to Yan Ze. Gu Xiye eventually woke up. Yan Ze started to call a doctor, but Gu Xiye stopped her, expressing a strong desire to speak with Yan Ze privately, saying she almost didn't get to see her again. Gu Xiye confessed that she deeply envied Yan Ze, even feeling jealous of her.
Yan Ze found this hard to believe, seeing Gu Xiye as such a perfect person. Gu Xiye clarified that she envied Yan Ze's popularity and easygoing nature; even though they often did the same things, everyone seemed to like Yan Ze and dislike her. She also confessed her longing for a real family, as Yan Ze's parents' courtesy could never replace real parental love. Gu Xiye admitted she even envied Yan Ze when she was scolded by her parents.
She apologized for her feelings, admitting she wanted to "replace" and "become" Yan Ze, but couldn't say it because she was Gu Xiye. Yan Ze, in tears, told her not to apologize, saying she should be the one to apologize. Yan Ze then thanked Gu Xiye, acknowledging the profound impact her words had on her. With the Gaokao exams over, Mr. Zheng waited nervously outside.
Liu Xichuan was the first to emerge, casually telling Mr. Zheng that the exam was "too simple" and that her next task was the truly difficult one. Back home, Liu Xichuan logged onto a game and began a voice chat with Yan Hai, whose shocked reaction revealed a surprising connection. Gu Xiye was finally discharged from the hospital and returned home, accompanied by Yan Ze and her parents. Suddenly, Yan Hai rushed in, frantically seeking Yan Ze's help.
To save time, he quickly hoisted Gu Xiye onto his back and carried her upstairs. Inside, he explained his predicament to Yan Ze and Gu Xiye, asking for their advice. Unfortunately, Yan Ze's parents overheard his story. Yan Ze's father, furious, grabbed a slipper and began chasing Yan Hai, reprimanding him for his reckless behavior like playing games and "hooking up with a senior." Yan Ze's mother tried to intervene, urging her husband to stop.
Yan Ze also told Yan Hai to focus on his studies instead of "fooling around." Yan Hai's mention of Liu Xichuan reminded Yan Ze and Gu Xiye that it was the day the Gaokao ended. Gu Xiye asked Yan Ze if she had considered which university or city she wished to attend. Yan Ze admitted she hadn't given it much thought, noting that before today, she hadn't even realized how close they were to their own graduation.
She expressed her lack of confidence due to her poor grades, fearing she'd be stuck at home. Gu Xiye, however, encouraged her, stating that many students significantly improved their scores in Senior 3, and being as smart as Yan Ze, she could certainly achieve it. Still unsure, Yan Ze was prompted by Gu Xiye to start studying diligently right away. Meanwhile, Yan Hai was still consumed by his discovery about Liu Xichuan.
His friends, Mr. Han, He Xinliang, and Guo Chao, pressed him to reveal what was troubling him. Yan Hai eventually blurted out that Liu Xichuan liked him. His friends were highly skeptical, with He Xinliang even joking that he'd "eat a basketball" if it were true. Just then, Liu Xichuan arrived at the basketball court. Echoing Yan Hai's past grand gesture, she unfurled a large confession banner proclaiming her feelings for Yan Hai, confirming his claims.
As the crowd reacted, Mr. Han stepped forward, disagreeing with the burgeoning relationship. He argued that Yan Hai was about to enter Senior 3, with impending student-athlete selection exams, national recruitment, and the Gaokao, and could not afford any distractions. Despite Mr. Han's objections, Liu Xichuan got onto Yan Hai's bicycle. Yan Hai, offering her an experience she'd never had in a luxury car, drove her around.
As they talked, Yan Hai admitted he wanted to say something important to her but couldn't yet. He explained that he needed to get good grades in the Gaokao and train diligently to become a better person, worthy of standing before her and making a serious confession. He asked Liu Xichuan to wait for him for "one year." Liu Xichuan agreed, but made him promise to uphold this "one-year agreement." Yan Hai confidently assured her that he would. He later reflected that the back of that bicycle and the person riding it would become the most unforgettable and reliable support in his life.
Episode 29 Recap
Yan Hai was in high spirits, humming a tune as he studied alongside Yan Ze and Gu Xiye. Annoyed by his excessive cheerfulness, Yan Ze asked what had happened. Yan Hai excitedly recounted how he had taken Xichuan for a bike ride to the bridge across the river, where they had called out each other’s names and made a one-year agreement.
Yan Ze, finding the idea of cycling in their hilly area ridiculous, jokingly asked if Xichuan had told him to "study hard," to which Yan Hai retorted that she had told him to "go to hell" and accused Yan Ze of being jealous of his motivation. Meanwhile, Director Zheng summoned Mr. Han, angrily demanding to know why He Xinliang's name appeared on the list for the student-athlete selection exam.
Director Zheng insisted that He Xinliang's parents strictly forbade him from playing basketball, expecting him to pursue scientific research, and ordered Mr. Han to remove his name. Mr. Han refused, arguing that he wasn't He Xinliang's parent and that students should be encouraged to follow their passions. Enraged, Director Zheng tore up the list. Yan Ze, who was nearby, overheard their entire heated exchange.
Later, Mr. Han met He Xinliang to inform him that Director Zheng had blocked his participation in the first round of the student-athlete selection exam. He Xinliang, furious, intended to confront Director Zheng, but Mr. Han restrained him, advising a more careful approach. Mr. Han, drawing on his own experience, warned He Xinliang about the difficulties of an athletic career, emphasizing frequent injuries and short professional lifespans.
He suggested He Xinliang, being academically strong, should instead aim for a good university, postgraduate studies, and a scientific career for a smooth life. He Xinliang defiantly called Mr. Han a "traitor," stating he desired a life of fulfillment rather than one that was merely "smooth but dull."
He acknowledged that he might regret his choices in the future but stressed that he would rather live in the present without abandoning his current persistence and pursuit, as giving up now would lead to immediate regret. He concluded by saying he wanted to fight for himself. He Xinliang later hesitated outside Director Zheng's office, about to knock, when Yan Ze pulled him away. She secretly handed him a new student-athlete selection exam form with his name on it.
Yan Ze explained that she had overheard the argument between Director Zheng and Mr. Han. Seizing the opportunity before a change in student leadership, she had used her authority to secretly alter the electronic record and replace the physical list Director Zheng had torn up. He Xinliang worried about the trouble this could bring her, initially hesitant to accept.
However, Yan Ze reassured him, stating that she wanted to help him realize his dream because she found purpose in helping others. During the selection exam, Mr. Han was surprised to see He Xinliang's name on the re-submitted list. Director Zheng spotted He Xinliang and tried to stop him from participating. Seeing this, Yan Ze quickly intervened, pretending to trip and fall, thus tangling with Director Zheng and preventing him from reaching He Xinliang.
After He Xinliang completed his run, Yan Ze miraculously recovered and darted away, leaving a fuming Director Zheng who vowed to thoroughly investigate the incident. Soon after, Director Zheng pulled Yan Ze out of class, insisting she come to the Academic Affairs Office because her actions were "of grave circumstance and severe nature." He Xinliang, hearing the news, rushed to Ji Xiao for advice.
Moments later, Yan Hai and Guo Chao appeared, delivering worse news: they had heard rumors that Yan Ze was facing expulsion for "sneaking into the campus Internet and maliciously altering the exam list." Overwhelmed, He Xinliang declared he would sacrifice his student-athlete qualification if it meant saving Yan Ze. However, Ji Xiao quickly stepped in, proposing a better solution. He suggested uniting all students and teachers to sign a petition, arguing that the school would be forced to reconsider.
Gu Xiye immediately agreed to join the effort. Together, they rallied the entire school, successfully collecting signatures from over a hundred students and teachers. Gu Xiye, Ji Xiao, and He Xinliang then met Yan Ze, informing her that their efforts had resolved half the problem. Director Zheng had agreed to reconsider her punishment after receiving the petition.
The condition was that if Yan Ze could rank in the top fifty of her grade in the upcoming monthly exam, her punishment would be significantly reduced. Initially overjoyed, Yan Ze's happiness quickly turned to despair at the daunting academic target. Her friends, however, encouraged her, promising their full support to help her achieve the goal and urging her not to give up. Later, Yan Ze found He Xinliang practicing basketball alone.
She questioned his relentless effort, wondering if it would all be in vain if his parents pressured Director Zheng to revoke his qualification. He Xinliang smiled, reminding her that she had taught him to "never know if you don’t try." He explained that he was trying and working hard so he wouldn't regret it later and didn't want his future self to look down on him.
He further reflected that moments passed quickly and that his seventeen-year-old self would only exist once, so he would not give up. He challenged Yan Ze to ask herself if she had truly tried her best. Inspired by He Xinliang's words, Yan Ze began to study with fierce determination, often found reciting classical texts early in the morning.
Ji Xiao, Gu Xiye, and He Xinliang helped her with her studies and cheered her on, much to the delight of Yan Ze's parents. However, Ji Xiao's spot checks revealed that Yan Ze's progress wasn't ideal, causing her to feel disappointed and disheartened. The monthly exam was scheduled for the next day, and Yan Ze, overwhelmed with anxiety and self-doubt, was still reviewing her books on the street. He Xinliang approached her, trying to lift her spirits.
He assured her she could succeed, emphasizing that her effort was more important than the outcome. He even jokingly promised to leave school with her if she were expelled, telling her not to put too much pressure on herself because life was long and offered many different paths.
Episode 30 Recap
Yan Ze returned home dejected after her exam, having only advanced five rankings, which was still far from her goal of the top 50. Distraught, she went out to clear her head. Meanwhile, her father went to Mr. Zheng, pleading for another chance for Yan Ze. Mr. Zheng was surprised to hear about the rumor of expulsion. Yan Ze’s father reminded him of the condition that she wouldn’t be expelled if she made it into the top 50.
Mr. Zheng confirmed it was a rumor but suggested they could use it as leverage to motivate Yan Ze to achieve that goal. Having overheard her father begging Mr. Zheng, Yan Ze went back to her classroom, packed her belongings, and declared she was quitting school. She felt useless and believed she was only causing her parents distress. Ji Xiao tried to calm her, but Yan Ze ran off with her things.
He Xinliang saw her leave and chased after her, urging her not to give up. Yan Ze, however, felt she was too unintelligent and had no hope. Suddenly, Director Zheng's voice boomed over a loudspeaker, announcing a second chance for Yan Ze: she now had to rank among the top thirty in the grade. This news plunged Yan Ze further into despair. The setback severely affected Yan Ze, causing her to lose her appetite.
Her father encouraged her to study, but Yan Ze felt it was pointless, arguing that the teachers only offered help because her father had "begged them." Her father, angered by her words, retorted that if she were more like Gu Xiye, he wouldn't have to "beg them" at his age. Their argument escalated, and dinner ended on a sour note.
Later, He Xinliang stood outside Yan Ze's home, provocatively calling her a coward and unworthy of dreams, hoping to ignite her fighting spirit. Though angered, Yan Ze still felt incapable. Then, Gu Xiye arrived to comfort her. She revealed that she never visited her parents, not because she was ashamed of them, but because she didn't know how to face them.
They were powerful figures who had provided her with a rich and hopeful life, and she feared her current state would only bring them guilt and sadness. Instead, Gu Xiye confided that she secretly sent them her report cards, full of good grades, to show them she hadn't fallen apart, was still excellent, and would one day be their pillar of support. Yan Ze lamented that she had nothing remarkable to offer, unlike Gu Xiye.
Gu Xiye reassured her that this applied to everyone: when you possess nothing else, your mind becomes your greatest asset. She acknowledged that studying might feel dull and arduous, but if Yan Ze persevered, it would empower her and make her exceptional. Inspired by Gu Xiye's words, Yan Ze resolved to rally herself, and with renewed determination, she immersed herself in her studies day after day.
Later, she shouted downstairs, responding to He Xinliang's earlier taunts, declaring that "his" life was hopeless, and she would have a brilliant future. On the eve of the college entrance exam, Yan Ze set her sights on getting into Peking University. Her father took her out for a drive to help her relax. During the drive, both father and daughter apologized for their past arguments.
Her father acknowledged her aspiration to enter Peking University and expressed his gratitude for her dedication, regardless of the exam's outcome. The college entrance exam finally concluded. Yan Ze's parents gathered Gu Xiye and Yan Ze for a family photo. Gu Xiye remarked that it was the most natural and heartfelt family photo she had ever taken. Ji Xiao arrived near Yan Ze's apartment building with cotton candy and other sweets.
As he ate, he reminisced about his moments with Yan Ze, his eyes welling up with emotion. Inside, Yan Ze mentioned how much she wished for a cake. Moments later, her father presented her with a cake, claiming he didn't know who had left it at their door. Inside the cake, Yan Ze and Gu Xiye discovered a note from Ji Xiao.
After reading it, Yan Ze rushed downstairs to see if Ji Xiao was still there, but he had already departed. Separately, Yan Hai formally confessed his feelings to Liu Xichuan. Ji Xiao later advised He Xinliang to act on his feelings quickly. However, He Xinliang revealed that his father was sending him to study at a university in the United States. He felt that confessing his feelings to Yan Ze now, only to leave for four years of long-distance, would be a selfish act.
Episode 31 (Ending) Recap
While organizing her books, Yan Ze was reminded of a past argument with Gu Xiye in junior high school, during which Gu Xiye had torn one of Yan Ze's books. As Yan Ze sat crying, He Xinliang happened to pass by and offered comfort, reminding her that "when in chorus, nobody cares about the conductor because they are back to the audience." Years later, Yan Ze realized it was He Xinliang who had comforted her that day.
Gu Xiye, recalling the incident, admitted she never understood why Yan Ze had gotten so angry. Yan Ze confessed her true feelings, explaining that her outburst was due to jealousy because Gu Xiye had replaced her as the conductor. Yan Ze had served as class monitor for three years, hoping for that moment, but didn't know how to conduct, leading the teachers to replace her.
She added that she had been even angrier during a Senior 1 singing contest, having practiced extensively, but still took her frustration out on He Xinliang. Gu Xiye then pointed out He Xinliang's consistent, silent support for Yan Ze, asking, "Don’t you think that He Xinliang has done a lot for you behind the scenes? . . . Do you like him?" Yan Ze remained silent.
Meanwhile, He Xinliang was playing basketball and recalled Liu Xichuan's advice: "If you do like her, don’t care about the reality. Youth never comes back. It is such a happy thing to be with the one you like. So, don’t leave any regrets." He thought to himself, "I don’t want to play this basketball alone. I want to fight with my opponents." Yan Ze, in an internal monologue, encouraged herself, "Cheer up.
You are Yan Ze who fear nothing and never disguise yourself. Tell him your most sincere feelings." As memories of shared laughter and tears, including releasing Kongming lanterns, flashed through their minds, both Yan Ze and He Xinliang simultaneously realized their true feelings. They ran towards each other, meeting across a road, sharing sweet smiles, their hearts finally connected. In a past interaction, Yan Ze had once asked He Xinliang, "Why are you so nice to me?"
to which he replied, "Do you have any understandings about being nice? Am I nice to you? I knew it." She had then confessed, "I thought… you like me." Nine years later, Yan Ze had graduated from university and found a good job in her hometown, but He Xinliang had moved to the United States to pursue his basketball dreams. Despite their separation, Yan Ze often dreamed of him and felt his absence.
At work, Yan Ze was reprimanded by her director due to a malfunction with the audio equipment during a live recording. The guest host invited for the show was Gu Xiye, now a renowned host, who was there to interview the singer Hu Xia. Gu Xiye intervened, defending Yan Ze, which immediately softened the director's harsh tone.
The director's concern quickly shifted from anger at Yan Ze to ensuring Gu Xiye's comfort, even calling for the audio team to fix the issues and insisting, "Yan Ze needs to get rest today. She must rest." Watching Gu Xiye on camera, Yan Ze felt no jealousy, remembering He Xinliang's words that she herself was "not ordinary," "pretty," and "special."
Later, Yan Ze and Gu Xiye returned to Yangming Middle School for its anniversary celebration, accompanied by Mr. Han and Mrs. Gu. They met Mr. Zheng, who was now the Vice Headmaster. As they walked around, they accidentally entered Miss. Wang's classroom. Miss.
Wang, delighted, introduced Yan Ze to her students as a "miracle student" from the 2006 grade, explaining that Yan Ze had gone from ranking in the bottom 100 to the top 30 in her grade during Senior 3. Miss. Wang asked Yan Ze to share her study experience, but a flustered Yan Ze could only offer simple encouragement: "I don’t have experience. At that time, I feel that I can't always be a loser.
And you are definitely smarter than me. So, learn hard and believe in yourself." Mr. Zheng then added that Yan Ze's story showed that "It is never late to study from anytime." Alone in the classroom hallway, Yan Ze vividly envisioned her old classmates, including Ji Xiao, smiling and greeting her, before the vision faded away. She later heard a broadcast announcement for the "Monitor of Senior 1 Class 3" to come to the rostrum.
Following the call, she went to the sports field and found Ji Xiao on the stage. They greeted each other with "Long time no see." Soon after, Gu Xiye, Mr. Han, and Mrs. Gu also arrived, and it was revealed that Ji Xiao had donated 100,000 books to the school library, generously doing so "in the name of everyone" because the library held many "happy times" for them.
Further on the school grounds, Yan Hai and Liu Xichuan were married, and Yan Hai was now a PE teacher at Yangming Middle School. He was still his straightforward self, engaging in playful banter with Mr. Han about coaching methods, with Yan Hai claiming his own teaching was "more professionally" done than Mr. Han's. Everyone laughed, savoring the nostalgic atmosphere. In a moment of reflection, Yan Ze imagined seeing He Xinliang playing basketball in the distance.
During the reunion dinner, Mr. Zheng delivered an emotional speech, expressing his immense excitement and happiness at seeing his former Class 3 students become "brilliant talents useful to the society." He acknowledged his strictness during their school days, admitting he was "too harsh" and "too strict indeed," but reaffirmed that "we are really for your own good." Yan Ze spoke on behalf of the students, thanking Mr. Zheng and specifically crediting his encouragement for her "tiny miracle" in Senior 3.
Everyone then raised their glasses to toast Mr. Zheng. During the gathering, Xiao Zhuo'an made a video call, lamenting that she couldn't join them due to work and expressing how much she missed everyone. She then asked about He Xinliang, which brought a visible wave of sadness over Yan Ze, who quickly ended the call, suggesting they "don't mention him" and would "talk later."
Later, a former classmate asked Yan Ze about He Xinliang, speculating, "I thought you were together back in high school." When Yan Ze confirmed, "We broke up long ago," the person asked "Why?" , making Yan Ze even more despondent. She then made an excuse to leave the table. Deep in thought, Yan Ze sat alone, then rode a cable car, reflecting on old memories.
She recalled a voice from her past encouraging her, "Go up there yourself, and say what you want to say. . . . No one will hear you here. Get off when you're finished. Don’t be afraid. I am here waiting for you." As the cable car ascended, Yan Ze finally cried out the words she had held back for so long: "He Xinliang, You brought me to this place before. I cried out every word in my heart.
But there is one word I didn't say. . . . He Xinliang, I like you. . . . He Xinliang, I miss you. He Xinliang, I like you!" At that very moment, He Xinliang appeared and embraced her tightly. This moment brought their true and warm youth story to a beautiful conclusion.
