Fan Xian sent Wang Qinian to gather information about Teng Zijing’s wife and child but came up empty-handed. All they knew was that the news of Fan Xian’s death was spreading wildly, even within the bureaucracy. Wang Qinian returned via the secret tunnel and warned Fan Xian to flee, or he would be executed for deceiving the emperor. Ignoring Wang Qinian’s advice, Fan Xian insisted on going to explain everything to Qing Di himself.

Disguised as an assassin, Fan Xian broke into the palace but was quickly surrounded. Eunuch Hou rushed to the scene, and Fan Xian begged him to inform Qing Di. Knowing this was a deadly matter, Eunuch Hou urged Fan Xian to flee, but Fan Xian refused and demanded to see the emperor. Chen Pingping arrived just in time to stop him.

Fan Xian resented Chen Pingping deeply—he had risked his life multiple times in Northern Qi, yet the Black Knights Chen had promised never showed up. Sensing Fan Xian’s murderous intent, Chen Pingping chose not to explain and instead agreed to persuade the emperor. He also warned Fan Xian to prepare for both good and bad outcomes and not to implicate the Fan family. Fan Xian handed over the map of the Temple he had drawn.

Trembling, Chen Pingping went to see Qing Di and revealed that Fan Xian was still alive. He tried to speak in Fan Xian’s favor, but Qing Di was unmoved and forcefully drove him out. Only after much hesitation did the emperor agree to meet Fan Xian. For the first time, Fan Xian knelt before Qing Di and truthfully recounted his experiences in Northern Qi.

He repeatedly explained his reasons for faking his death and reported in detail the crimes of Li Chengze and Li Yunrui colluding with the Northern Qi Jinyiwei to smuggle and make profits. Qing Di ignored him and turned his back. Desperate, Fan Xian revealed the location of the Temple. Only then did Qing Di slowly rise, but he soon lay back down. Fan Xian pledged his loyalty with all his might, but to no avail.

Qing Di suddenly shouted, “Get out! ” Fan Xian realized the emperor wouldn’t kill him for now and left relieved. Fan Xian went to Yan Hua Hall to see Crown Prince Li Chengqian. Li Chengqian pretended to know nothing and played dumb. Fan Xian revealed the smuggling conspiracy between Li Yunrui and Li Chengze. Li Chengqian was dumbfounded—he had always seen Li Yunrui as his ally. But Fan Xian spoke convincingly, detailing every wrongdoing.

Finally realizing the truth, Li Chengqian agreed to help Fan Xian take down Li Yunrui and Li Chengze. Fearing his guards might leak the secret, he ordered them all executed. Wang Qinian learned that Fan Xian was working with Li Chengqian and scolded him for being reckless. Fan Xian’s plan was to expose Li Yunrui and Li Chengze before Yan Bingyun returned with the envoy to increase his chances of a pardon from the emperor.

With his hands full, he had no choice but to ask for Li Chengqian’s help, which would also give him time to continue searching for Teng Zijing’s wife and child. Wang Qinian found out Fei Jie was away on assignment and Fan Sizhe was safe, although he was going out early and returning late each day. He also learned that Teng Zijing’s wife and child had been taken to a newly opened brothel in the capital—Moon Embrace House.

Fan Xian was shocked. With Fei Jie and Fan Sizhe safe for now, he was slightly relieved and decided to focus on rescuing Teng Zijing’s wife and child. Chen Pingping and Yan Ruohai were imprisoned, keeping a close eye on the changing situation and praying for Fan Xian’s safe return. Moon Embrace House was a newly opened, high-class brothel in the capital with strict security and membership-only access.

Fan Xian was troubled about how to get in when he noticed a memorial event being held nearby with a stage set up. The organizers were awarding entry cards to Moon Embrace House to the person who best impersonated Fan Xian. Participants eagerly reenacted scenes such as Fan Xian drunkenly reciting poetry or performing a sword dance with Haitang Duoduo at the Empress Dowager’s birthday banquet. Watching from the sidelines, Fan Xian was both amused and exasperated.

Fan Xian considered using this opportunity to enter Moon Embrace House but feared being recognized and gave up. Wang Qinian suggested sneaking in at night. From Madam Wang, Fan Xian learned that the manager of Moon Embrace House was Yuan Meng, once the famed courtesan of Liu Jing River. Madam Wang used to run a rouge shop, and many of the brothel girls were her regular customers.

She also mentioned that Wang Qinian was quite familiar with the singer Sang Wen, who was now performing at Moon Embrace House. Madam Wang had always suspected an affair between the two and held a grudge. Despite Wang Qinian’s repeated denials and his sworn oath that he and Sang Wen had no relationship, Madam Wang still slapped him hard. With his wife’s reluctant approval, Wang Qinian took Fan Xian to find Sang Wen. They quietly approached her while she was picking fabric at a silk shop.
