While Gu Yanxi was fiercely fighting, Hua Zhi rushed over on horseback and used a sleeve arrow to help him avoid a fatal strike. After charging into the valley, the assassins began attacking Hua Zhi, but fortunately, Gu Yanxi protected her. Although the situation was critical, Hua Zhi remained completely calm. She noticed a mechanism on the mountain, so she picked up a knife, climbed up the slope, and cut the rope that triggered the trap.

Instantly, a pile of massive rocks tumbled down the hillside. Gu Yanxi, in perfect sync, shielded Chen Qing and Li Hou and led them to hide under the cliff. The assassins were completely wiped out. After returning to the city, Gu Yanxi had to go to the palace, so Hua Zhi gave him the protective talisman. Hua Zhi delivered the letters from the lords to the ladies of the household.

After reading them, they were overjoyed to learn that the lords and the old master were doing well in the north. That evening, a banquet was set up at home, and everyone sat together. The first and second madams, along with Hua Ling, performed their talents to entertain everyone. At Hua Zhi’s encouragement, the fourth madam also sang a song. Changqing took Gu Yanxi to Gu Chengtao’s sleeping quarters.

Gu Chengtao had been unconscious in bed for a day and a night, so Gu Yanxi immediately summoned the Qixiu guards and the imperial army to lock down the inner palace and questioned all the palace maids and eunuchs. When Gu Yanxi interrogated Consort Chen, he learned that the emperor fainted after court. Chen Qing examined the food box and the nourishing soup sent by Prince Xian but found nothing unusual.

Gu Yanxi then sought out the imperial physician who had taken the emperor’s pulse but also gained no useful information. Upon learning that the assassination had failed, Prince Xian, Gu Yan Gong, didn’t say much—after all, a commissioner was never easy to assassinate. Although the assassination did not yield any information or portrait of the commissioner, Prince Xian believed that as long as the emperor remained unconscious, victory was already his.

Gu Yanxi instructed his men to keep a close watch on Prince Xian’s residence and to report even the slightest movement. Chen Qing investigated the entire palace and discovered that the Sixth Prince was missing. To speed up her earnings, Hua Zhi decided to open a restaurant. However, 500,000 coins weren’t enough to buy a place in a prime location, so she set her sights on Tangxi Restaurant in the slightly remote southern part of the city.

When she arrived, she saw Manager Bai negotiating a price. Just as he was about to pay the deposit, Hua Zhi pulled him aside. During their conversation, Hua Zhi learned that Manager Bai was no longer working for Yunlai Restaurant and wanted to start his own business. Hua Zhi proposed a clever idea: they would compete, and the winner would take over Tangxi Restaurant. Shen Huan took Shao Yao to the creek to look for snakes.

The two agreed to travel to more and bigger places together in the future. Chen Qing interrogated the servants around the Sixth Prince and learned that he had been missing for two days. Gu Yanxi kept vigil at Gu Chengtao’s bedside, recalling the moments when he taught him to write and the first time he drew a bow and shot an arrow. Just as he was lost in thought, Chen Qing came to report.

To find the Sixth Prince, Gu Yanxi ordered a thorough search of the palace and beyond, saying that they must find him alive or dead. He also ordered more men to closely monitor Prince Xian. The chef Hua Zhi had hired was dissatisfied with Fudong’s leadership. They mocked each other’s experience, ridiculing Fudong, who said nothing and silently went to chop vegetables. At that moment, a voice came from across the room.

Upon hearing it, Fudong was so stunned that she cut her own finger. The head chef slowly approached and recognized Fudong as Xigu. Just as he called out her name, Fudong ran off. Hua Zhi asked her what had happened. Fudong tearfully said she thought she saw the person who had once sold her—her father. Fudong had grown up being beaten, and once, when the meat for a birthday banquet was lost, she was sold.
