Bright Eyes in the Dark Episode 10 Recap
> Bright Eyes in the Dark Recap
Firefighters brought the father and son injured in the fire they started to the hospital. Lin Luxiao arranged for Huang Huai and the program crew to follow up on their condition, hoping to provide some assistance. Back at the station, the firefighters somberly discussed the family's plight, noting that the father, a decorator, and the son, a transporter, were working constantly.
Financial pressures from renovating their house back home made them irritable, leading to the impulsive act of starting the fire. They later learned from the hospital that the son's condition was stable, but the father had suffered severe inhalation injuries requiring surgery. With no savings and living in a rented home, the family's future looked bleak. An emergency call reported a woman threatening to jump from the top of the Jiande Building.
At the scene, the woman's parents explained they had found a suicide note that morning and located their daughter, Sun Meng, using her phone. When Lin Luxiao asked if Sun Meng had depression, they denied it, describing her as cheerful. They admitted, however, that she had a boyfriend in college who they believed "led her astray," causing her to become secretive.
Lin Luxiao took the parents to the rooftop but instructed them to remain silent and let his team handle the situation. On the rooftop, Liu Ruyi tried to build rapport with Sun Meng, offering her water and promising to keep his distance. Lin Luxiao assessed that the height and wind made an air cushion impractical, and with no window access, a direct approach was the only option. This was risky as Sun Meng held a knife to her artery.
He instructed Liu Ruyi to continue talking to buy time. During their conversation, Sun Meng revealed her parents had forced her to break up with her boyfriend, Tao, after she simply asked about going on a date, believing the relationship was affecting her studies. Liu Ruyi sincerely promised to help her reunite with Tao if she came down, even joking that he would tie Tao up and bring him to her if necessary.
He assured her his help was genuine and told her she could call him or the 119 emergency line anytime. Just as Liu Ruyi seemed to be making progress, Sun Meng's parents ignored Lin Luxiao's instructions and approached, scolding their daughter for her actions. Agitated, Sun Meng demanded they leave. As Liu Ruyi tried to de-escalate, Nan Chu, having read in Sun Meng's suicide note that she liked Chi's BBQ, had someone buy skewers and send them up.
Lin Luxiao used the BBQ to connect with Sun Meng, reminiscing about eating BBQ in college and acknowledging the good memories she must have had there with her friends and boyfriend. Lin Luxiao urged Sun Meng to reconsider, reminding her that life is long and full of diverse experiences to be lived. He told her she didn't have to live by anyone else's plan but should explore the world for herself.
Liu Ruyi reiterated his promise to help with any future difficulties, guaranteeing he would be there for her. Persuaded by their empathy, Sun Meng handed over the knife and was safely brought down from the ledge. Once safe, however, Sun Meng's mother slapped her, and her father berated her for being worthless and causing trouble. Nan Chu intervened, telling the parents they needed to reflect on their own behavior and questioning their dismissal of their daughter's depression as just "kidding."
The parents angrily told Nan Chu to mind her own business before taking Sun Meng away. Lin Luxiao gently told Nan Chu she shouldn't have confronted them, but Nan Chu defended her actions, explaining she understood Sun Meng wasn't resisting guidance but was desperate for understanding, which she ultimately received from strangers instead of her own family. Later that night, Lin Luxiao saw a social media post from his friend, Sun Mingyang, a fellow firefighter, about a family tragedy.
In a call, Sun Mingyang explained that his team had responded to a call about a young woman threatening to jump, but she jumped immediately upon their arrival, and her parents blamed them. He confirmed the woman was a freshman named Sun Meng, noting her parents' callous dismissal of her depression. He mentioned hearing she had been saved by a fire station earlier that day, realizing it was Lin's team. Lin Luxiao, devastated, confirmed the news with the police.
The firefighters at the station, including Nan Chu and Zheng Ping, read Sun Meng's final social media posts, which spoke of giving up on love due to her parents, feeling paradoxically calm after a depression diagnosis, and feeling unable to meet expectations before deciding to "delete her account" and wishing to be a dandelion in the next life. Sun Meng's death deeply affected Nan Chu.
Lin Luxiao comforted her, acknowledging that while their pasts might be similar, their futures were not predetermined. The tragedy also triggered Lin Luxiao's nightmares about a boy he failed to save in an earthquake, a burden Yang Zhengang noted he still carried. Worried about the impact on the new recruits, Yijiu and Shiquan, Yang Zhengang and Lin Luxiao agreed to speak with them.
Meanwhile, Yijiu discovered negative online comments on a message he had left for Sun Meng, accusing the firefighters of seeking attention and being unprofessional. He and Shiquan decided to post a video response. In it, they identified themselves as the firefighters from the rescue, clarified they were ordinary professionals, not internet celebrities, and defended their actions.
They challenged critics who called Sun Meng "dramatic," explaining that depression is a real illness and encouraging those who suffer from it to find strength. Separately, the station responded to a fire alarm from a rural village. Upon arrival, Yijiu, Shiquan, and Deputy Director Yu found no fire. The elderly villagers admitted they had made the call, falsely claiming the fire was already out, in an attempt to get the firefighters to irrigate their fields.
When Yu explained this was not their duty, Yijiu called the villagers "rascals," sparking a physical altercation. Lin Luxiao rushed to the scene and informed the villagers they had committed a crime by making a false report and wasting public resources. The police arrived, commended the firefighters for their restraint despite the villagers' false claims of being attacked, and took charge of the situation.
On the way back, Lin Luxiao saw the rookies' video and told Yijiu to delete it to avoid further trouble. However, it was too late. Lin Luxiao was informed that Sun Meng's parents had seen the video and were now at the fire station causing a scene, with Yang Zhengang trying to calm them down. Lin Luxiao immediately ordered Yijiu and Shiquan to their dorm and to stay there until told otherwise.
