Che Xingde had confessed to raping and murdering Guo Ling after encountering her crying alone one night. He coerced his sister, Che Yanqin, into helping him bury the body.
In court, Che Xingde confessed to his crimes and was sentenced to death with deprived of political rights for life. Che Yanqin received a three-year prison sentence for helping destroy and fabricate evidence. Wen Yifan was present at the trial, finally finding closure. They stopped at a candy stand, where Wen Yifan bought a bag of sweets, describing them as not very sweet but with a strong milky flavor. Sang Yan, wanting to try them, leaned in and kissed her. Sang Yan hinted at marriage, and Wen Yifan seemed surprised. Sang Yan assured her that he would support her in anything she wanted to do, except changing partners, and that she should not settle for a life she didn't want.
Wen Yifan said that she had grown and matured, and with Sang Yan's support, she felt free and confident to pursue her dreams without worrying about what others thought. Sang Yan suggested that Wen Yifan spend the upcoming Lunar New Year with his family. She shyly agreed. Wen Yifan was asked by Director Gan to perform a dance at the station's annual gala and she could bring a plus one, and Wen Yifan invited Sang Yan.
