Shao Zhenrong waited late into the night for Du Xiaosu, but she never appeared. His calls went unanswered, and his WeChat messages unread, leaving him in a state of deep anxiety. Du Xiaosu finally returned home very late, and her roommate, Zou Siqi, noticed her unusual behavior. Du Xiaosu, unwilling to explain, simply locked herself in her room. Shao Zhenrong arrived downstairs at Du Xiaosu's building and called Zou Siqi, who informed him that Du Xiaosu was already asleep.
Shao Zhenrong was greatly perplexed. From her window, Du Xiaosu watched Shao Zhenrong's lonely figure depart, tears streaming down her face in sorrow. The next morning, Shao Zhenrong waited for Du Xiaosu outside her company, pressing her for an explanation for standing him up. Du Xiaosu was reluctant to talk, but Shao Zhenrong forcefully pulled her into his car, insisting they talk there since it was not convenient where they were.
As Lei Yuzheng arrived for work, he witnessed the scene from his car, arousing his suspicion. Shao Zhenrong stopped the car midway and continued to push Du Xiaosu for answers. Without a word, Du Xiaosu kissed him passionately before pulling away. Just then, a traffic officer approached to address their illegally parked car. Du Xiaosu seized the moment to declare their breakup, then tearfully got out of the car and ran off. Ignoring the officer's warnings, Shao Zhenrong pursued her.
Du Xiaosu remained resolute about ending their relationship, which Shao Zhenrong struggled to accept. She falsely claimed her ex-boyfriend had returned and she never truly loved Shao Zhenrong, asserting he was merely a substitute for her loneliness. Shao Zhenrong refused to believe her, pointing out that if she didn't love him, she wouldn't be so upset. Du Xiaosu reiterated her decision to break up and walked away. The traffic officer then returned to instruct Shao Zhenrong to move his car.
Lei Yuzheng was unable to reach Shao Zhenrong by phone and, worried, decided to postpone his afternoon meeting to go look for him. Lei Yuzheng drove to a spot they frequented in childhood and found Shao Zhenrong there, drowning his sorrows with alcohol under a large banyan tree.
Shao Zhenrong confirmed they had broken up, and when Lei Yuzheng asked for the reason, Shao Zhenrong shared Du Xiaosu's claims: that he wasn't the one she loved, that she was in love with her ex-boyfriend, and that he was just a spare. However, Shao Zhenrong expressed his belief that Du Xiaosu was lying and hiding something from him, suggesting that she must be keeping something secret.
Lei Yuzheng responded, "She broke up with you and you're still making excuses for her!" He then advised Shao Zhenrong that Du Xiaosu was not as simple as he thought, and that letting her go was not a bad outcome. Shao Zhenrong, still deeply attached, informed Lei Yuzheng of his decision to join a medical team for a free clinic in Yunnan, explaining it was a long-planned trip he decided to start early due to a need for extra hands.
Shao Zhenrong returned home in a daze, where his mother, Shao Kaixuan, learned of his breakup with Du Xiaosu. She advised him that some things don't work out just because you insist on them, but Shao Zhenrong remained unwilling to give up. Lei Yuzheng arranged a meeting with Du Xiaosu at a golf course, where he confronted her about the breakup.
Unbeknownst to Lei Yuzheng, Du Xiaosu had previously been pressured by Shao Kaixuan, who revealed that Du Xiaosu's father, Du Maokai, was Shao Kaixuan's first love and had deeply betrayed her. Shao Kaixuan made it clear she could not accept Du Xiaosu as part of their family, as it would constantly remind her of her past pain, and insisted that leaving Shao Zhenrong was Du Xiaosu's only choice to avoid putting Shao Zhenrong in a difficult position.
Despite this heavy burden, Du Xiaosu insisted to Lei Yuzheng that she no longer loved Shao Zhenrong, stating it was none of his business. Lei Yuzheng, furious, scoffed at her, pointing out that she had previously said she loved Shao Zhenrong and wouldn't give up on him, and now her promise seemed worthless. He accused her of fabricating stories, particularly about an ex-boyfriend, and suggested she had merely found a richer man and wanted to discard Shao Zhenrong.
He stated that she didn't deserve Shao Zhenrong at all. Lei Yuzheng demanded she reconcile with Shao Zhenrong, warning her not to make herself suffer. Du Xiaosu adamantly refused, even threatening to resign. Lei Yuzheng retaliated by vowing to make it impossible for her to continue working in the industry. Later, Du Xiaosu, overcome with sadness, found herself at the hospital, watching Shao Zhenrong busy at work. Memories of their happy times together brought her to tears.
She decided to resign from her job. Zou Siqi urged her to reconsider, encouraging her to speak with Shao Kaixuan directly and explain the situation to Shao Zhenrong, but Du Xiaosu did not want to put Shao Zhenrong in a difficult position between her and his mother. Lei Ting, having recovered, was discharged from the hospital. Lei Yuzheng suggested he take over Yu Tian so Lei Yuzheng could pursue his own ventures, but Lei Ting refused.
Lei Yuzheng expressed his concerns about the entertainment center project involving Jiang Jin, fearing unclear land ownership could create problems. However, Lei Ting revealed that Jiang Jin had already visited him, promising to secure government approval soon. Lei Ting encouraged Lei Yuzheng to pursue the project, seeing it as an opportunity for him to make his own name. Later that night, grieving, Du Xiaosu went to a bar to drink alone and became heavily intoxicated.
She sat by the roadside, crying to herself. Lei Yuzheng happened upon her and again pressed her to reconcile with Shao Zhenrong, urging her not to let him suffer further. Du Xiaosu steadfastly refused, prompting Lei Yuzheng to berate her as heartless. Du Xiaosu begged Lei Yuzheng to leave her alone, claiming she was crying for joy at being rid of Shao Zhenrong, before hailing a taxi and departing.
Shao Zhenrong unexpectedly received a call from the taxi driver, who informed him that Du Xiaosu had left her bag in the car. Shao Zhenrong promptly retrieved the bag and brought it to Du Xiaosu, finding her sitting blankly outside her home.
