Lei Yuzheng was ordered to meet with Jiang Jin at the golf course. Lin Xiangyuan presented a project proposal that Lei Yuzheng found impressive, leading him to question why Jiang Jin wasn't undertaking it himself. After excusing Lin Xiangyuan to retrieve a scarf, Jiang Jin candidly explained to Lei Yuzheng that despite Lin Xiangyuan's capabilities, he views him as an outsider.
He revealed that he had already discussed the project with Lei Ting, and it was intended to be Lei Ting's final masterpiece. Lei Yuzheng observed that Jiang Jin was maneuvering Yutian to be the vanguard while remaining in the background. Meanwhile, Lin Xiangyuan went to the restroom where he was recognized by a cleaner, Lin Qiang, as a former coworker from a repair shop. Lin Qiang called out to him, reminding him of their shared village and past.
Lin Xiangyuan, however, feigned ignorance and denied knowing him. Lei Yuzheng entered the restroom and overheard this exchange. Separately, Jiang Jin expressed confidence that Lei Yuzheng would agree to the collaboration, noting that Lei Ting still had influence. Du Xiaosu's first day at Boyuan was uneventful, as her manager, Ning 总, hadn't assigned specific tasks. She spent the day helping colleagues and fetching drinks.
As she left work, she found Shao Zhenrong waiting downstairs, eager to take her to dinner and introduce her to his closest friend. Shao Zhenrong then showed Du Xiaosu a photo of Lei Yuzheng, causing her to freeze in surprise. When Lei Yuzheng arrived, he met Du Xiaosu's gaze but pretended not to recognize her, warmly greeting Shao Zhenrong. Du Xiaosu was further astonished to learn that Lei Yuzheng was her new boss.
She attempted to apologize for her previous report about him, but Lei Yuzheng quickly diverted the conversation, claiming he didn't personally know her, only that she had written an article about him. He congratulated Shao Zhenrong on finding love and urged Du Xiaosu to treat him well, ensuring he would never be hurt. Du Xiaosu affirmed that being with Shao Zhenrong made her happier than anything else.
As Lei Yuzheng left, he quietly warned Shao Zhenrong to be cautious in his new relationship and not to misjudge Du Xiaosu, prompting Shao Zhenrong to question if he thought he would be "robbed of money or sex." Later, Du Xiaosu expressed her desire to resign, worried that her relationship with Shao Zhenrong might lead to misunderstandings at work. Shao Zhenrong gently dissuaded her, reminding her that her dream was to be an architect and Boyuan offered the best platform.
He asked her to promise not to give up, and she reluctantly agreed. She then wondered if Lei Yuzheng had a bad impression of her, but Shao Zhenrong assured her that his brother had praised her as very nice and talented. Lei Yuzheng learned that Jiang Fanlv had been causing disturbances at the company. He instructed He Qunfei to arrange an easy position for her at Boyuan to keep her away from him.
He then asked He Qunfei to summon Du Xiaosu to his office after work, a request He Qunfei found inappropriate but carried out. Du Xiaosu nervously arrived at Lei Yuzheng's office. He directly confronted her, implying that she was hired solely because of Shao Zhenrong's influence, despite the numerous applicants Boyuan received daily. Du Xiaosu insisted she was unaware of Shao Zhenrong's intervention and would not have accepted the job if she had known.
Lei Yuzheng questioned her frequent job changes, suggesting that her career moves were opportunistic. He implied she might abandon Shao Zhenrong if someone "better" came along, accusing her of using Shao Zhenrong's affections for personal gain. Infuriated, Du Xiaosu declared that their love was genuine and forbade him from insulting their relationship, then stormed out.
Lei Yuzheng, however, made a veiled reference to "knowing who you really are" and reminded her to cherish what she had, warning that he would never allow anyone to hurt his friend and brother for personal gain. Shao Kaisuan, Shao Zhenrong's mother, called Lei Yuzheng to inquire about her son's recent activities, asking if he had a girlfriend and urging Lei Yuzheng to keep an eye on him. Lei Yuzheng confirmed that Shao Zhenrong indeed had a girlfriend.
Shortly after, Shao Zhenrong returned home, and his mother confronted him about hiding his relationship, telling him to bring his girlfriend home for dinner the next day so she could meet her. Shao Zhenrong wanted to take Du Xiaosu home to meet his mother. Du Xiaosu was nervous, especially upon arriving at his luxurious villa, which left her stunned by his wealthy family background. Shao Zhenrong reassured her that his family wealth had nothing to do with their relationship.
Inside, Shao Kaisuan was warm and hospitable, immediately putting Du Xiaosu at ease. Shao Kaisuan explained that Shao Zhenrong was headstrong and preferred to make his own way, even keeping his family background private from hospital colleagues. She also revealed that she used to be an associate professor of history and took over the family business after her husband fell ill. The conversation flowed easily until Du Xiaosu mentioned she was from Pingtan, which caused Shao Kaisuan to pause thoughtfully.
Meanwhile, Lei Yuzheng took Lin Xiangyuan to a remote, undeveloped piece of land. Lei Yuzheng bluntly pointed out that their company lacked the necessary government approvals for the project, rendering their plans baseless. He accused Lin Xiangyuan of using a deceptive tactic to involve Yutian, stating it was like "a mantis to catch a cicada, the oriole is behind."
Lin Xiangyuan insisted that the project was a genuine collaboration between the seniors and, despite challenges, would become a monument to Lei Ting. Lei Yuzheng sarcastically acknowledged his "forethought." Shao Zhenrong bought a house and called Du Xiaosu to invite her for dinner at a restaurant after work. However, just as Du Xiaosu was preparing to leave, she received a phone call from Shao Kaisuan, who requested to meet her immediately at a nearby coffee house.
Du Xiaosu promptly left to meet her. At the coffee house, Shao Kaisuan made Du Xiaosu promise not to disclose their conversation to anyone. Du Xiaosu's phone rang repeatedly with calls from Shao Zhenrong, which she ignored. Shao Kaisuan then confirmed Du Xiaosu's father's name as Du Maokai. She recounted her past with Du Maokai, revealing they were once lovers who planned to move to Shanghai together.
However, Du Maokai failed to meet her as promised, leaving her to return to Shanghai alone before eventually marrying Shao Zhenrong's father. Distraught by this revelation, Du Xiaosu walked to the riverside. She called her father, who, unaware of her distress, asked about her well-being and her relationship with Shao Zhenrong. Du Xiaosu, choking back tears, lied that everything was fine and that she missed him and her mother. After hanging up, she broke down, sobbing uncontrollably. Upon returning home, her roommate noticed her distress but Du Xiaosu simply claimed she was tired and needed to sleep.
