Lu Chang left Liangzhou Prefecture and returned home. Madam Zeng wept uncontrollably. Lu Chang and Jian Mingshu tied red threads on each other’s wrists, symbolizing a wish for good fortune. That evening, Madam Zeng bustled about preparing a large table of food—tomorrow was the provincial exam, and everything had to be auspicious. Jian Mingshu asked about Lu Chang’s background and talked about her dream. In it, a man treated her with utmost care like a kind father.

She also dreamed of Lu Chang, who was gruff and ignored the food she brought him. The next day was the provincial exam at the examination hall. Madam Zeng and Jian Mingshu gave Lu Chang countless reminders. Song Qingzhao watched from afar. Though his parents were angry, he knew they would come that day, which made being close to Jian Mingshu dangerous for her.

Song's mother hurriedly got off the carriage to deliver something to Song Qingzhao, while Song's father remained prideful and refused to get out, watching from afar instead. Both Lu Chang and Song Qingzhao wore wishing charms that Jian Mingshu had specially sought for them. Jian Mingshu and Madam Zeng knelt in the courtyard daily to pray for Lu Chang’s success. Song Qingzhao’s parents did the same.

Song Qingzhao had figured it out—only by becoming an official and strengthening himself could he stay with Jian Mingshu long-term. Three days later, Jian Mingshu arrived at the examination hall to pick up Lu Chang but did not see Song Qingzhao. Song's mother dragged Song's father to pick him up, even threatening to run away from home if he didn’t.

Jian Mingshu looked at the gift Song Qingzhao had given her and thought she should return it at an appropriate time. Madam Zeng said if she truly liked Song Qingzhao, she would support her. But if she felt nothing, she shouldn’t lead him on and cause unnecessary sorrow. After all they’d been through, Lu Chang realized one thing—he must never lose Jian Mingshu.

Ying Xun reminded him that the two of them were currently siblings, and out of respect for Jian Mingshu’s feelings, Lu Chang could not tell her the truth yet. Yin Shujun and the Princess of Wen’an both knew that Song Qingzhao had deep feelings for Jian Mingshu. But Jian Mingshu confessed that she didn’t seem to have romantic feelings for Song Qingzhao. The two ladies assured her they would support her no matter what—they were, after all, close friends.

Madam Zeng had been looking after Aunt Li all along and even made pear soup for her that day. Wei Zhuo was deeply grateful. Song Qingzhao came to Hualang Pavilion. After much thought, Jian Mingshu returned the hibiscus hairpin to him. Though they got along well, she didn’t know what to do. Song Qingzhao understood her feelings but hoped they could continue interacting as they had before.

Since a gift had been given, there was no reason to take it back. If someday Jian Mingshu found her true love, it wouldn’t be too late to return it then. Lu Chang specially came to take Jian Mingshu shopping and held her hand the whole way. They entered a store, and since there was no musician that day, Lu Chang played Phoenix Seeks the Phoenix, leading Jian Mingshu to think Lu Chang had someone he admired.

Lu Chang kept guiding Jian Mingshu to remember the past—like how she used to call him "A’Chang gege" instead of "A’xiong. " Jian Mingshu was stunned for a long time upon hearing this. Back home, Wei Zhuo escorted Madam Zeng back. Lu Chang and Jian Mingshu’s interaction was full of gossip-worthy details. Lu Chang ranked first in the provincial exam, becoming the top scorer. Song Qingzhao also passed with high marks, but was heartbroken and drunk over Jian Mingshu’s rejection.

Jian Mingshu had been his motivation to enter politics—without her, there was no joy in success. But soon, Song Qingzhao came around. As long as he became an official, Jian Mingshu might one day reconsider him. Jian Mingshu was in her room taking Lu Chang’s measurements for clothes when Madam Zeng walked in with Song Qingzhao and witnessed their intimate moment. The air instantly grew tense. That day, Hualang Pavilion hosted a charity sale.

Song Qingzhao came to help Jian Mingshu, but ended up catching the attention of many young ladies. Lu Chang stayed behind to report to Prince Rui that he and Jian Mingshu were not siblings.
