Jian Mingshu felt wronged. Song Qingzhao specially brought food to comfort her. The more Jian Mingshu thought about it, the more aggrieved she felt. She was Lu Chang’s biological sister, yet he chose to keep things from her to protect someone else. Song Qingzhao said Lu Chang must have had his own reasons and that hiding the truth was for her sake.

Outside the door, Lu Chang nodded in relief upon hearing this, but when he saw Song Qingzhao wiping the food from Jian Mingshu’s lips, he couldn’t help but go in. Song Qingzhao then took his leave, having sensed Lu Chang’s wariness toward the closeness between him and Jian Mingshu. Jian Mingshu didn’t accept Lu Chang’s apology and kicked him out without a word.

Su Tangli hoped Xie Xu would cancel his engagement with the Lady of Wenan County, but Xie Xu, mindful of not yet having secured the title of heir, persuaded her to wait a bit longer for the sake of their future. Su Tangli didn’t press further, though both harbored their own agendas. Lu Chang begged and pleaded outside Jian Mingshu’s door, even writing on little notes, but Jian Mingshu remained angry.

Xie Xu, determined to gain the title of heir, needed the Lady of Wenan County’s support and had no intention of breaking the engagement. To curry favor with his future brother-in-law, Song Qingzhao gifted an exquisite pen, which Lu Chang rejected without hesitation. Yin Shujun and the Lady of Wenan County visited the academy that day. Because of Su Tangli, Jian Mingshu didn’t reveal what she had discovered.

Su Tangli grew worried at the Lady of Wenan County’s arrival, but Xie Xu was too occupied to meet her and was even sending her away. Su Tangli, unwilling to be manipulated, stormed off only to see Xie Xu gently draping a cloak over the Lady of Wenan County. Feeling upset, Su Tangli deliberately bumped her shoulder hard as she passed. Jian Mingshu came to Lu Chang and spoke about the Lady of Wenan County.

She hadn’t told her anything because she believed Lu Chang must have a reason for protecting Su Tangli. Since the Lady of Wenan County only sought the truth, she might be able to both protect Su Tangli and expose Xie Xu’s true nature. After a quarrel with Su Tangli, Xie Xu sweet-talked her and promised they would leave the capital early the next morning.

That night, Su Tangli woke from a nightmare, terrified of returning to a hell where she was used and manipulated by the powerful. Yin Shujun and Prince Rui entered the palace together to see his mother, pretending to be a loving couple. Prince Rui hadn’t expected Yin Shujun to maintain her composure so well in the palace. After leaving, Yin Shujun went to Hualang Pavilion, which had always helped women in need.

A grateful woman came to thank her and gifted her some flower seeds. Prince Rui, seeing Yin Shujun busy planting flowers, didn’t expect her to be so capable in managing household affairs as well. Prince Rui and Prince Yu were scheduled to visit the next day. Xie Xu had arranged for Su Tangli to leave the capital in advance but also secretly sent people to kill her en route.

Su Tangli narrowly escaped and, upon learning the truth, saw Lu Wencai passing by. She shouted and rushed into the house. Lu Wencai had always harbored intentions toward Su Tangli, and the two began to fight. The headmaster was furious and ordered them to reflect for three days, forbidding them from appearing when Prince Rui and Prince Yu arrived. Jian Mingshu, hearing of the incident, suspected that Lu Wencai had discovered Su Tangli’s true identity.

The next day, Prince Rui and Prince Yu arrived at the academy. Ten essays were selected, and while everyone praised Song Qingzhao’s piece, their expressions turned strange upon reading Lu Chang’s. Prince Yu, knowing Song Qingzhao was affiliated with Prince Rui, tried to suppress him and even mocked Lu Chang’s background. Minister Lu quickly intervened when the two princes nearly quarreled and called Lu Chang forward.

Upon seeing the birthmark on Lu Chang’s wrist, Minister Lu was shocked and began asking about his family background. Prince Yu, having stained his clothes, went to change and unexpectedly encountered an old acquaintance. Prince Yu, Prince Rui, and the others went to Huantao Hall only to find it locked. The mistress asked Jian Mingshu to open the doors. As she did, she found Lu Wencai’s corpse in the main hall and was horrified. A murder in the academy prompted the princes to order a thorough investigation.
