Yao Yuling informed Wang Yongge and Wang Xin that she had resigned from her job as a train announcer and needed to vacate her dormitory room. She asked Wang Yongge if he could help her get permission to store her luggage in the dorm temporarily until she could return for it, as she had too many belongings to move at once. Wang Yongge was surprised by her decision and expressed regret for her leaving a good job.

Wang Xin speculated that she was leaving to be with Niu Dali. Yao Yuling did not elaborate, offering vague excuses instead. Wang Yongge cautioned Wang Xin that while Yao Yuling might lack practical skills, she wasn't malicious and he hoped she wouldn't be deceived, noting that if she was going to be with Niu Dali, who was capable and hardworking, it would be reassuring.

Later, Wang Xin pleaded with Wang Yongge to speak to Ma Kui to resolve their past misunderstanding, believing this was necessary for Ma Kui to approve his relationship with Ma Yan. Wang Yongge staunchly maintained he was not in the wrong and refused to approach Ma Kui, whom he felt treated him like an enemy. He questioned if Wang Xin doubted his word and insisted he was not on the train Ma Kui claimed to have seen him on.

Wang Yongge reiterated that if Ma Kui approved of Wang Xin and Ma Yan's relationship, he would not object, but the issue stemmed from Ma Kui. Yao Yuling departed on a train bound for Hacheng with Jia Jinlong, both anticipating a new life. At Ma Kui's home, Peng Yongli and Peng Mingjie visited. Ma Kui hosted them with a large meal.

Peng Yongli announced that she and Peng Mingjie had been dating for two years and planned to marry in a couple of months. She asked Ma Kui to be her wedding witness, and he enthusiastically agreed. Peng Yongli expressed her intention to stay and work in Ningyang after graduation, being used to living there.

Ma Kui was delighted and immediately offered to prepare a new room in his house for the couple, suggesting Ma Jian share a room downstairs to make space. Peng Yongli was hesitant, concerned about being a burden to Ma Kui and Ma Yan, but Ma Kui insisted it would be no trouble and make the house lively. Ma Yan arrived and mentioned she was heading out early to set up her stall, despite the cold.

Both Ma Kui and Wang Yongge worried about her working in the cold, but she insisted on being diligent. Peng Yongli asked Ma Kui if he had prepared his witness speech, and he joked that it was all in his head. Ningyang police received a report that Chen Limei, a 24-year-old married female worker from Linjiang No.1 Textile Factory, was murdered on her way home after working the night shift. Her body was found by people fishing near the riverbank.

The estimated time of death was around 1 a. m. , and the method of the crime was consistent with the train dismemberment case. Wang Xin was at the scene, and analysis of footprints suggested the suspect was a male between 1. 75 and 1. 8 meters tall and weighing around 80 kilograms.

The initial investigation focused on Chen Limei's colleagues, but all those matching the suspect's characteristics had alibis, leading investigators to believe the killer was not someone close to her. Wang Xin discussed the case and the lack of leads in ongoing investigations with his mentor, Ma Kui, who advised being proactive rather than passively waiting for the criminal to surface, suggesting mobilizing social forces to find new clues.

Liu Ming, a patient Shen Xiuping had treated, visited her clinic to express his gratitude for curing him, bringing her two cans as a gift. Shen Xiuping declined the gift, stating that treating patients was her duty as a doctor. Later, despite the cold weather, Ma Yan prepared to leave early to set up her street stall on a weekend, saying she needed to make more money. Wang Yongge was concerned but couldn't dissuade her.

They had a brief discussion about the difficulties faced by police families. Peng Yongli arrived at Ma Kui's home and again confirmed her wedding plans for the next two months and Ma Kui's role as witness. Ma Kui reiterated his plan to prepare a new, decorated marital room for her and Peng Mingjie, brushing aside her suggestion to rent a place.

The police received a report about a missing female college student from Wahe who was returning to Ningyang for school. Witnesses saw her get off the train and leave the station with a middle-aged woman. Wang Xin canvassed businesses and individuals outside the station. He learned from one vendor that the student and woman had gone in a specific direction.

A dumpling shop owner recalled them coming in, the woman finding the dumplings too expensive, and noted that the woman had a spot on her chin. Based on the description and circumstances, Wang Xin suspected the middle-aged woman was Liu Guiying, a human trafficker he had encountered previously. He reported his findings to Ma Kui.

Ma Kui decided to travel by train to Wahe to speak with the missing student's family, instructing Wang Xin to stay behind, report to the team, and look after Ma Yan and Ma Jian. Jia Jinlong visited Wang Xin on the train platform and gave him a new coat. Wang Xin took the opportunity to ask Jia Jinlong if he had heard anything about drug traffickers or addicts in Hacheng.

Jia Jinlong admitted they were known outlaws, unlike human traffickers, and that he was afraid of them, but agreed to help Wang Xin gather information. After finishing her shift at the hospital, Shen Xiuping was met by Liu Ming, who insisted on accompanying her home and taking her to dinner. Shen Xiuping tried to refuse his company, claiming she had things to do at home and later pretending she had forgotten something at the hospital to escape his persistence.

Liu Ming followed her, expressing his strong feelings for her and his determination to be with her, mentioning his work in the city, money, and house. Shen Xiuping clearly stated she wasn't interested in getting familiar with him and asked him to leave, but Liu Ming declared he wouldn't give up on her. Ma Kui took the train to Wahe. The blind old man he knew was also on the same train.

They engaged in a friendly competition, using their sense of smell to identify the professions or characteristics of passengers. Ma Kui acknowledged the old man's superior skill and asked him for tips on improving his olfactory abilities. Wang Xin and Ma Yan ate at a noodle restaurant. The owner gave them an unusually large portion of meat and initially refused payment, making Wang Xin suspicious.

He recognized the owner as Chen Xiaofei, whom he had arrested years before for stealing railway track fasteners. Chen Xiaofei was now running the restaurant with his wife and elderly mother, raising a child, and living an honest life. He expressed deep gratitude to Wang Xin for helping him turn his life around. Wang Xin was touched and felt a sense of accomplishment as a police officer, reflecting that helping criminals reform was a meaningful part of the job.

He insisted on paying for the meal, putting it on a tab for future visits. As they left, Ma Yan urged Wang Xin to propose to Ma Kui. Later, Ma Kui went to Shen Xiuping's home to pick up Ma Jian, but the boy had fallen asleep. Shen Xiuping told Ma Kui to let him sleep there and offered to bring him home the next morning, dismissing his apologies for the inconvenience.

As Ma Kui was leaving, Shen Xiuping noticed he had forgotten his scarf. She followed him outside and tied it around his neck for him. This interaction was witnessed by their neighbor, Cai's wife. Soon, gossip spread among the neighbors, with Cai's wife and Wu's wife speculating about Ma Kui and Shen Xiuping's relationship and potential cohabitation, discussing whether they were a good match or if Shen Xiuping was "wasted" on Ma Kui.
