Niu Dali returned to his hometown after a year of hard work in Shenzhen, believing Yao Yuling was still single. He presented her with a carefully chosen ring, hoping it would symbolize their future together. However, Yao Yuling declined the gift, not explaining that she was already in a relationship. Niu Dali suggested he hold onto the ring for her until the time was right, which she agreed to.

He treated the neighborhood to a meal before heading back to Shenzhen. Meanwhile, San Tou Qiang made a call from a public phone booth, cautiously checking his surroundings before returning to his nearby accommodation at Fuqiang Hostel. Wang Xin followed, observing San Tou Qiang enter the second floor. Wang Xin attempted to enter the hostel under the guise of booking a room but was told it was full.

He then asked to use the bathroom, but finding it was on the first floor, he had to leave, unable to gather information about the room. Ma Kui kept watch from a nearby street vendor stall, confirming San Tou Qiang was in the room where a light had just turned on on the second floor. Ma Kui sought out local officer Chen Zhijie, who was helping his wife sell socks at a street stall during his off-duty hours.

Ma Kui informed Chen Zhijie about San Tou Qiang's location and asked him to quickly investigate the hostel owner. Their plan was to apprehend San Tou Qiang when he went to pick up the goods. Chen Zhijie agreed to help. Ma Kui returned to the street stall where Wang Xin was waiting. Ma Kui mentioned Chen Zhijie helping his wife with her stall, which Wang Xin found normal, criticizing Ma Kui's perceived old-fashioned mindset.

Chen Zhijie soon reported back, having discovered that San Tou Qiang's real name was Luo Jiaqiang and that he had been a long-term resident of Room 212 at Fuqiang Hostel since November of the previous year. The hostel owner was cooperative and willing to assist the police; he confirmed Luo Jiaqiang was generous and involved in the leather handbag business but added that no one had ever visited Luo Jiaqiang at the hostel.

Chen Zhijie met with Wang Xin and Ma Kui to discuss their next steps. They agreed to continue monitoring the situation and wait for Luo Jiaqiang to make a move related to the goods. Niu Dali, wanting to do something beneficial for his neighbors, proposed tearing down the communal water basin in the courtyard and installing individual water pipes and taps in each household. He offered to pay for it himself.

The neighbors appreciated his gesture, though Changgui advised him to save the money for getting married. This comment deeply affected Niu Dali, bringing tears to his eyes. He announced he would be returning to Shenzhen that afternoon, saying tearful goodbyes to everyone, expressing how much he had missed them and how touched he was by their past kindness and support. He also shared his ambitious plans for the future.

Ma Kui and Wang Xin spent several days monitoring Luo Jiaqiang without seeing him meet anyone. He only smoked a cigarette in the corridor after making phone calls before returning to his room. However, a few days later, Chen Zhijie received information that Luo Jiaqiang was scheduled to move a batch of goods in two days. This confused Wang Xin and Ma Kui, as they hadn't seen him transmit any messages externally.

Reviewing their observations, Wang Xin recalled Luo Jiaqiang throwing away his cigarette after only a few drags and suspected he was using the cigarette butts to pass messages. Returning to their surveillance point outside the hostel, Wang Xin and Ma Kui saw Luo Jiaqiang smoke a cigarette and flick the butt onto the street. A woman immediately approached and picked it up.

Ma Kui and Wang Xin moved in quickly and apprehended the woman, who turned out to be Hou Sanjin disguised in women's clothing. Hou Sanjin admitted that Luo Jiaqiang wrote messages on the cigarette butts. He confessed to his involvement in drug trafficking, explaining that he turned to it after being cheated in business and abandoned by friends. Believing his capture was the end, Hou Sanjin's only wish was to see his son one last time.

Hou Sanjin revealed that he had a son with a woman in 1977, but she abandoned the child with him. Unable to care for the infant, who appeared sickly, he left him on a train. That child was later found and adopted by Ma Kui and his wife, becoming Ma Jian.

Hou Sanjin confessed to frequently watching Ma Jian from outside their courtyard but decided against trying to reclaim him after witnessing how well Ma Kui cared for him as his own son. He expressed gratitude to Ma Kui for raising his son. Ma Kui was enraged upon hearing this, realizing Hou Sanjin was the person he had occasionally seen lurking outside their home.

Despite his anger, Hou Sanjin pleaded with Ma Kui for just one last, distant look at Ma Jian. Following close cooperation and strategic deployment by the Shenzhen police based on the information gathered, Luo Jiaqiang was successfully apprehended. Ma Kui planned to escort Hou Sanjin back to Ningyang the following day. Wang Xin decided to meet up with classmates that evening.

While shopping for a toy for Ma Jian, Ma Kui unexpectedly saw Niu Dali working, collecting swill from a restaurant. Ma Kui called him aside to talk. Niu Dali claimed the job was profitable, earning him at least 1,000 yuan a month, and expressed his ambition to save money to start his own business later.

Ma Kui was concerned for him, but Niu Dali seemed content, only asking Ma Kui not to reveal his current job to Wang Xin or their neighbors, especially Yao Yuling, as he wanted to save face. Ma Kui and Wang Xin escorted Hou Sanjin to Ningyang. Ma Yan and Ma Jian were there to meet them. Seeing his son from a distance, tears welled up in Hou Sanjin's eyes.

Ma Jian happily greeted his father, Ma Kui, and received the toy. Several months later, based on the leads provided by Hou Sanjin, the police collaborated with authorities in Hacheng. They successfully identified and confirmed the principal members of the criminal group were located in Hacheng, marking a significant breakthrough in the case. As they discussed the next steps for further investigation and apprehension, they received a report that Bao Jiashun had escaped from the rehabilitation center.
