Following the elusive Dong Gang, Wang Xin and Ma Kui observed him walking in circles, displaying strong counter-surveillance skills, which led them to believe he was aware they were watching. Wang Xin followed him while Ma Kui waited. After Dong Gang entered a building and then left, Wang Xin searched a garbage bag he had discarded, finding only everyday waste. This made him suspect someone was inside Dong Gang's residence. Concerned for potential danger, they entered the building.

Inside, they found a man chained to a bed. The man was disoriented, repeated that he was not Ding Gui'an, and called Wang Xin his father. Returning to Dong Gang's store, they found it empty. Ma Kui suggested that Dong Gang had likely been testing them and only fled when he realized they were watching, possibly alerted when Wang Xin searched the garbage.

Wang Xin expressed regret, but Ma Kui reassured him it was due to his inexperience, advising him on the timing and method of investigation. At the local police station, they learned the chained man was Dong Gang's mentally ill younger brother. The brothers were orphans who grew up together, and the brother was sent to a mental hospital when Dong Gang went to prison. After his release two years prior, Dong Gang brought him home and chained him up.

The police were still investigating the reason. Wang Xin insisted on speaking with the brother despite warnings about his unpredictable behavior. He managed to engage the brother briefly before the man became agitated, repeatedly shouting, "I didn't kill anyone," especially upon seeing a police uniform.

This outburst led Wang Xin and Ma Kui to speculate that Dong Gang might have committed a murder that his brother witnessed, causing his mental breakdown, and Dong Gang had subsequently confined him to prevent him from revealing it. Later, a hog hock was discovered in a garbage can.

At the police station, officers compared it to a photo, noting a tattoo of the character "Yi" on the forearm section that matched a tattoo on a photo of Ding Gui'an's forearm, which also displayed a specific hand gesture. The severed limb was identified as belonging to Ding Gui'an. Shortly after, news arrived that Dong Gang had been apprehended. When questioned, Dong Gang asked about his brother, and was told he was safe and better off.

Dong Gang then confessed to killing a friend five years earlier during a fight. His brother had witnessed the event and was so traumatized he developed mental illness. Dong Gang was imprisoned for the stabbing. After his release, he brought his brother home, but his brother's repeated claims of "I didn't kill anyone" when he saw him made Dong Gang fear exposure, leading him to chain his brother up.

However, Dong Gang claimed to know nothing about Ding Gui'an's disappearance or the severed limb. Ma Kui observed his reaction and concluded Dong Gang was likely truthful about having no information regarding Ding Gui'an. Despite Dong Gang's confession to the earlier murder, the investigation into Ding Gui'an's disappearance would continue based on the confirmed identity of the remains. Meanwhile, Jia Jinlong visited the yard where Wang Xin and Ma Kui lived, asking for Wang Xin, who was out.

While waiting, he encountered Yao Yuling returning from work. Jia Jinlong returned a button he had previously found, complimenting her beauty and giving her his contact information. Niu Dali was attempting to build a boom box, researching old models and learning from repairmen, hoping to impress Yao Yuling. Yao Yuling dismissed his efforts and his inquiries about the circuit diagram, stating she was busy.

Ma Yan made dumplings for Wang Xin, hiding them from her father, Ma Kui, and having Peng Yongli and Ma Jian deliver them. Ma Kui discovered the dumplings, replaced them with plain dough, and expressed his strong disapproval of Ma Yan's relationship with Wang Xin, citing his perceived poverty. Ma Yan was defiant, stating her determination to be with Wang Xin regardless of her father's objections. Wang Yongge found the dough and, preparing dumpling filling, made dumplings.

He advised Wang Xin that Ma Kui's opposition was significant, urging him to reconsider the relationship, but Wang Xin remained committed to Ma Yan. A series of thefts occurred on trains where passengers' pants were skillfully slit open and money was stolen without injuring the person. So far, eleven such incidents had been reported. The thief was elusive and left no clues. Captain Jiang ordered the officers to catch this "master thief" quickly.

Wang Xin analyzed the sophisticated technique and estimated the thief was likely over fifty years old, determined to catch him. On a train from Ningyang to Hacheng, a salesman known as "Little Wenzhou" was selling sunglasses using persuasive techniques. Wang Xin warned him to be cautious about the thief operating on the trains.

On the same train, an old blind man recognized a scent he associated with his daughter, Duo, and followed a young woman off the train at Haihe Station. The young woman, perceiving him as a threat, quickly left with her companion. Ma Kui witnessed this and felt sympathy for the old man. Jia Jinlong made another visit to Wang Xin and Ma Kui, enjoying a meal Ma Kui prepared.

He noted how busy their work seemed, asking if they had caught a human trafficker mentioned previously, which Wang Xin confirmed they had not. After dinner, as Jia Jinlong was leaving, he looked around the yard and saw Yao Yuling's clothes on the second floor, realizing that was her home. Yao Yuling went shopping for new clothes.

Niu Dali suggested she be more frugal, leading to an argument in which she dismissed his advice as indicative of his inability to provide for her. She mentioned planning a trip to Hacheng to visit a classmate. Niu Dali offered to accompany her, but she firmly refused, stating she would be met there and advising him not to take time off his job. Ma Kui and Wang Xin spent several days searching trains for the thief without success.

Upon returning home, Ma Kui found Ma Yan was not there. He encountered Shen Xiuping and offered her money and grain coupons for her help in looking after Ma Jian, but she declined, asserting her role as Ma Jian's godmother. Ma Kui then went to Wang Xin's to ask about Ma Yan's whereabouts and learned from Wang Xin that she was attending a classmate's wedding, with Wang Xin referring to himself as her boyfriend, which clearly annoyed Ma Kui.
