As Yu Zhouzhou sat on the Ferris wheel, she felt transported back in time to her childhood, to the very first time she met Lin Yang. They were playing in a park, and Lin Yang, declaring himself the emperor, immediately crowned Zhouzhou his fourth imperial concubine. They shared a joyful time, with Lin Yang playfully chasing her.
As her mother came to pick her up, Lin Yang asked if she would return the next day, and Zhouzhou agreed, promising not to break her word. Back home, Zhouzhou's mother was busy cooking while Zhouzhou and her grandmother watched "The Legend of the White Snake." Young Zhouzhou was captivated by the magic on screen and secretly practiced spells in her room.
One day, her friend Benben, bruised from a beating by his father, climbed over the balcony into her home. Zhouzhou fantasized about using her magic to turn Benben's father into a turtle. That evening, a man Zhouzhou called "Mr. Outsider," because he often stood outside their door, brought her a new game console. Unknown to Zhouzhou, this man was her biological father.
Her grandmother was upset by his presence, asking Zhouzhou's mother why he kept coming back when she had told her to stay away from him. Zhouzhou’s mother explained that he was there about Zhouzhou's schooling. Her grandmother insisted that Zhouzhou's mother should bear the responsibility for her own decisions. However, Zhouzhou expressed her desire to attend school, which her mother also wanted for her.
With her school matters resolved, Yu Zhouzhou became classmates with Lin Yang, as well as Ling Xiangqian and Jiang Chuan. During a ceremony where red scarves were distributed, Zhouzhou felt a pang of disappointment because she hadn't started school early enough to receive one that semester. Later, Lin Yang approached her, asking why she hadn't come to the park as promised. Zhouzhou shyly admitted she had forgotten.
Lin Yang, undeterred, shared his game cartridges with her, and they quickly became close friends, often playing games together. Zhouzhou, still troubled by being behind her peers, asked her mother why she started school later. Her mother apologized, taking the blame for forgetting the registration time. One day in class, Zhouzhou was caught playing her game console, which was confiscated by the teacher. She was made to stand and even lost one of her little red flowers.
The teacher gave her another chance to read some words from the blackboard, but due to her poor Pinyin, Zhouzhou misread "测量" (cè liáng, measure) as "色狼" (sè láng, pervert), causing further embarrassment and losing her last red flower. Seeing Zhouzhou's distress, Lin Yang assumed it was about the confiscated game console. He concocted a plan to retrieve it, distracting their teacher, Miss Yu, with a made-up story about Jiang Chuan bothering Ling Xiangqian.
Although Zhouzhou was too scared to go into the office herself, Lin Yang bravely snuck in and got the console back for her. He later realized Zhouzhou's unhappiness stemmed from her struggles with Pinyin, not just the game. He offered to teach her Pinyin, suggesting that she, in turn, could teach him characters since he admitted he was "stupid" too, like her. Upon returning home, Zhouzhou found a crowd gathered outside her mother's physical therapy shop.
Unaware of the confrontation her mother was facing, she and Benben were kept inside, playing innocently. Benben, overhearing a woman calling her mother "coquettish," asked Zhouzhou what it meant. Zhouzhou, trying to reassure him, said it meant beautiful. Benben then confided in Zhouzhou that he didn't have a mother, just like she didn't have a father, attempting to comfort her. Later, while playing with Lin Yang, Jiang Chuan, and Ling Xiangqian, Zhouzhou spotted "Mr. Outsider" nearby.
She called out to him, but he pretended not to hear and left with his colleagues. Lin Yang, who recognized the man as Director Zhou, Zhou Shenran's father, decided to take Zhouzhou to meet him at a dance where he was speaking. Zhouzhou's unexpected appearance caused an awkward silence at the event.
The next day at school, Zhou Shenran confronted Zhouzhou, claiming the game console Lin Yang had given her was his father’s, which led to a struggle and the console breaking. Lin Yang, defending Zhouzhou, got into a fight with Zhou Shenran. This incident quickly escalated, involving teachers and parents. Zhou Shenran’s mother, in a veiled attack on Zhouzhou's mother, insulted her and demanded that Zhouzhou transfer schools.
Lin Yang's mother, furious about her son fighting for Zhouzhou, forced him to promise never to play with Yu Zhouzhou again. Lin Yang, in tears, tearfully agreed, a promise that Zhouzhou, passing by, overheard, leaving her heartbroken. Distraught, Zhouzhou returned home. Her mother comforted her, assuring her that she had done nothing wrong and that the fault lay with the adults. To lift Zhouzhou's spirits, her mother took her to an amusement park where they rode the Ferris wheel.
As the Ferris wheel ascended, time seemed to fast-forward, bringing Zhouzhou to 2003. Outside the Ferris wheel, Yu Zhouzhou unexpectedly re-encountered Lin Yang. He recognized her instantly, remarking on how tall she had grown since primary school, and excitedly told her they both got into Zhen Hua High School, meaning they would be classmates again. Zhouzhou's mother, seeing Lin Yang, also commented on how much he had matured.
Later, Uncle Qi, Zhouzhou's mother's new partner, remarked on Lin Yang's evident interest in Zhouzhou. Zhouzhou's mother explained that Lin Yang and Zhouzhou were close friends in primary school, but their paths diverged due to "other things." Shortly after, Lin Yang called Zhouzhou's home, trying to invite her out. When she was hesitant, he cleverly used the old game console he had given her years ago as an excuse to visit.
They played the familiar games of their childhood, effortlessly rekindling their old friendship. Lin Yang, genuinely remorseful, apologized to Zhouzhou for the incident in primary school that led to her wanting to transfer schools and for promising his mother to stay away from her. Zhouzhou brushed it off, saying it was long ago and she had forgiven him, though she still felt constrained by her mother's wishes. Lin Yang then asked if he could continue to visit her.
Lin Yang later invited Zhouzhou, Jiang Chuan, and Ling Xiangqian to the beach. Uncle Qi drove Zhouzhou there, taking the opportunity to tell her he planned to propose to her mother. Zhouzhou was happy, but advised him to put significant effort into the proposal, as her mother, though easygoing, wouldn't say yes otherwise. At the beach, Lin Yang playfully introduced Zhouzhou to their friends as his "fourth imperial concubine."
After a fun day, Lin Yang expressed a desire to go out with Zhouzhou alone, suggesting a trip to the aquarium, despite knowing how difficult tickets were to obtain. Meanwhile, Zhouzhou’s mother and Uncle Qi were happily taking wedding photos. Lin Yang even showed up, admiring Uncle Qi's dashing appearance. They planned a trip to Thailand for their honeymoon, scheduled for the 17th.
When Zhouzhou mentioned Lin Yang’s invitation to the aquarium, also on the 17th, her mother initially suggested she cancel with Lin Yang. However, seeing Zhouzhou's reluctance, Uncle Qi intervened, assuring Lin Yang on the phone that they should go ahead with their plans. He generously offered to go to the travel agency the next day to postpone their Thailand trip, believing young people's feelings should be understood.
On the morning of the 17th, as Zhouzhou excitedly dressed for her date with Lin Yang, her uncle called with devastating news. Her mother and Uncle Qi had been in a car accident outside the travel agency. Rushing to the hospital, Zhouzhou witnessed her mother's body being covered with a white sheet, a sight that left her utterly shattered. The world collapsed around her, and she collapsed in despair.
Following the funeral for her mother and Uncle Qi, Zhouzhou moved in with her aunt and uncle. Back on the Ferris wheel, Zhouzhou's mind raced through the past 17 years. As the ride completed its circle, returning to the starting point, she saw Lin Yang waiting for her below.
