After realizing she had forgotten Mi Gu, Xia Chu sent a message apologizing profusely, explaining her mind was blank due to the night's troubles. Mi Gu reassured her, confirming she was home and suggesting they both rest. Mi Gu then recalled Zhuo Ran had given her a name card, asking her to call him for any updates on Xia Chu. Mi Gu angrily tore the card and threw it into the toilet but ultimately retrieved it, reconsidering.

Xia Chu, still troubled by Zhuo Ran, was distracted during Luo Xiaojun's preoperative meeting. Zhang Yichi, disappointed by her inattentiveness, decided to put Xiao Xiao in charge of Luo Xiaojun and have her enter the operating room, instructing Xia Chu to hand over all patient information. When Xia Chu attempted to discuss the matter, citing her involvement in discovering the condition and communicating with Luo Xiaojun's mother, Zhang Yichi sternly rebuked her.

He emphasized that saving lives allows for no distraction, only complete success or zero failure, and he would not permit an unprepared resident in his operating room. Xia Chu, realizing her error, apologized for her performance. Later that evening, still upset, Xia Chu received a call from her mother, who was concerned about her well-being. Xia Chu, wanting to reassure her mother, fabricated details about finding a perfect, affordable house near the hospital.

Upon hearing that Xia Chu still planned to move out, her mother immediately called Mu Min. Mu Min, in turn, contacted Liang Muze. Liang Muze initially attempted to mislead his mother about his good relations with Xia Chu, describing a harmonious living situation where they shared chores and understood each other's work.

However, when Mu Min revealed Xia Chu's mother had informed her of Xia Chu's intention to move out, a startled Liang Muze feigned poor signal and abruptly ended the call, despite Mu Min's warnings against letting Xia Chu leave. Upon Liang Muze's return from training, Brigade Commander Dong Zhigang summoned him. Liang Muze attempted to request leave for Luo Xiaojun's upcoming surgery, but Dong Zhigang firmly denied it.

He explained that a superior unit would be arriving the next day to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the Thunderbolt Commando. He stressed that every participant's score would be calculated, and the entire team would fail if even one member withdrew, leaving the decision of Tian Yong's participation to Liang Muze. Liang Muze then discussed the assessment with Tian Yong, who admitted to being nervous but unwilling to give up, yet worried about hindering the team.

Liang Muze reassured Tian Yong by reciting a classical poem, reminding him of their shared past from recruit camp to Isaia, emphasizing their bond as "brothers on the same boat" whose lives were entrusted to each other, rendering individual scores insignificant. Tian Yong then decided to participate in the assessment.

Meanwhile, in a separate investigation, Rao Feng received a forensic report on a deceased individual, aged 40 to 45, who died from hemorrhagic shock due to a chest gunshot wound, with signs of post-mortem animal bites. The most critical finding was that the deceased had severe kidney disease, requiring a transplant, and their blood type and MHC antigen highly matched a seriously wounded person nearly kidnapped at the Isaia Joint Medical outpost.

Rao Feng then received an urgent call about another murder in Jiaotong University's district and immediately departed for the scene. The next morning, the Thunderbolt Commando began its comprehensive assessment while Luo Xiaojun entered the operating room for his surgery. The commando initially progressed smoothly through various challenges. However, during the final mile of the 8000-meter run, Tian Yong suffered a severe leg cramp and collapsed.

Without hesitation, Liang Muze unburdened himself and carried Tian Yong on his back, running the remaining distance. They successfully completed the assessment, with Liang Muze’s decisive action setting a new record for the Thunderbolt Commando. Simultaneously, Luo Xiaojun’s surgery encountered complications; the initial surgical plan failed, and his heart rate and blood pressure became unstable, preventing an immediate switch to cardiac surgery. Xia Chu, distressed by the outcome, questioned why the surgery failed.

Zhang Yichi explained the limitations of medicine, stating that doctors are not gods and have boundaries they cannot cross, emphasizing he had done his best and that sometimes luck is simply not on their side. He proposed allowing Luo Xiaojun to recover before attempting a surgical repair of the atrial septal defect and pulmonary artery surgery, though he acknowledged the severe risk due to Luo Xiaojun's damaged cardiopulmonary function.

Upon learning of the surgery's failure, Liang Muze hesitated to call Xia Chu directly. He reflected on what his comrade Luo Liang would do, imagining Luo Liang urging him to contact the doctor, understand the failure, plan for the next steps, and comfort Luo Xiaojun and his family, assuring them of his protection. Overcoming his fear of a potentially grim outcome, Liang Muze called Xia Chu.

He acknowledged the clinical reality of unexpected complications even with thorough preparation and conveyed that doctors, above all, wish for their patients' safety. Liang Muze then drew a parallel to his own recent experience carrying Tian Yong during the assessment, explaining he did so because Tian Yong wished to be on the field. He urged Xia Chu not to abandon Luo Xiaojun, reminding her that the hospital was her battlefield and that doctors are irreplaceable.

Understanding his plea, Xia Chu affirmed her commitment and immediately resumed researching new surgical approaches for Luo Xiaojun. Chen Mengzhen visited Luo Xiaojun in the hospital, where she spoke with Zhang Yichi during his rounds. Zhang Yichi proposed performing cardiac surgery on Luo Xiaojun, explaining that it offered a greater chance of success given the complexity of the boy's heart condition, as interventional surgery would be too difficult.

Despite her emotional distress at the thought of her young son enduring such a major procedure, Chen Mengzhen expressed her complete trust in Zhang Yichi's medical judgment. After working through the night, Xia Chu went to Mi Gu's apartment to rest. She shared her frustration and sadness over the recent surgery failure, musing that sometimes, despite a doctor's best efforts, outcomes are not positive, and that medical capabilities often feel limited.

Mi Gu jokingly suggested the feng shui of Xia Chu's current residence was bad and advised her to move, even offering a similar apartment in her own building. During their conversation, Xia Chu noticed Zhuo Ran's name card, which Mi Gu had retrieved. Mi Gu admitted Zhuo Ran had given her the card on the day Xia Chu left, specifically to obtain information about her. Though Mi Gu had initially been torn about keeping it, Xia Chu's attention was drawn to the card's 3D printing, sparking a sudden idea.
