Xue Lingqiao retorted that she seemed to enjoy Yun Zhen’s grand gesture of balloons and flowers, which she admitted was something all girls appreciate.
He insisted she reject Yun Zhen, explaining that his breakup with her and his suggestion to terminate her pregnancy were all so she could live a normal, peaceful life. He felt that if she pursued a relationship with Yun Zhen, his actions would lose all meaning. Tian Jingzhi criticized his self-righteousness, pointing out that he made decisions without consulting her and that she had no obligation to validate his sacrifices.
Tian Jingzhi was preparing to leave for Canada the next day with Feng Dongdong, packing extensively. During the great famine of 1960, he met Sun Yu, who selflessly bought rice for his medical students. Their mutual admiration led to Yue Bai dedicating himself to Sun Yu's research. During an experiment, Yue Bai suffered immensely. A sudden avalanche struck, and Sun Yu, fearing that a superhuman like Yue Bai would be uncontrollable in the city without the extreme cold to inhibit his healing, made the difficult decision to abandon him in the collapsing snow mountain.
Sun Yu explained that ordinary humans would be defenseless against Yue Bai's immense power, speed, and regeneration if he returned to warmer conditions. He saw Yue Bai as a "ticking time bomb" whose existence could destabilize humanity, asking him to make one final sacrifice for mankind. Yue Bai, deeply hurt, reminded Sun Yu of his volunteer status, his sacrifices over 236 experiments, and their friendship, but Sun Yu remained resolute in his decision to leave him behind.
With her grandfather's birthday approaching, Tian Jingzhi asked him if he would disown her if she were pregnant before marriage, like her mother.
