Having rescued Ayu from the fire, Long Yan decided to openly protect her. Appearing before a drowsy Ayu, he introduced himself under the alias Long Yuchi, explaining he was Qing Qing's brother. Ayu, still dazed, acknowledged him and noticed his injuries before falling back asleep. Later, Xue Qianxun and Qing Qing visited Osmanthus House, a pastry shop. Qing Qing took on a challenge to eat ten different pastries in the time it takes to brew tea, for a free meal.

She declared that if she failed, she would write her name, "Long Qingqing," backwards. Hearing her use the surname "Long," Xue Qianxun became annoyed, questioning why she, as his personal maid, hadn't simply used his surname, "Xue." This distraction caused Qing Qing to fail the challenge, leaving her with a bill of 180 pennies. With no money, she sheepishly turned to Xue Qianxun, who paid with a silver ingot.

Delighted, Qing Qing immediately declared her new name would be Xue Qingqing and had the owner pack up all the pastries. That evening, Qing Qing accidentally spilled tea on Xue Qianxun's prized robe, woven from ten thousand snow silkworms. Panicked, she frantically apologized, fearing he would send her back to Luofeng Pavilion. Seeing her strong reluctance, Xue Qianxun relented and instead told her to go find Ayu.

Overjoyed, Qing Qing embraced his arm, calling him a "good person" and "living bodhisattva" before rushing off. Soon after, Long Yan appeared and teased Xue Qianxun about his apparent feelings for Qing Qing. Xue Qianxun vehemently denied it, but then noted Long Yan's lingering internal injuries. He insisted on transferring his energy to stabilize him, explaining that their spiritual qi was connected and Long Yan was too weak to protect Ayu.

Qing Qing, having returned for her pastries, stumbled upon the two men in a close position. Startled, she mumbled that she saw nothing and quickly departed. Qing Qing found Ayu, who had just awakened and shared a vivid dream about Qing Qing having a brother. Qing Qing confirmed the dream was real, and Ayu revealed that her brother, Long Yuchi, had already introduced himself.

Qing Qing then explained how Long Yuchi had saved Ayu from a fire in the Hunter Cave, where she and Zhiyong had gone to see a small wolf cub. Tragically, Zhiyong had died in the blaze. This news deeply saddened Ayu. Meanwhile, Liu Yuxiang, distraught over Zhiyong's death, publicly confronted Ayu at the market, accusing her of being a demon who killed Zhiyong and calling her a jinx responsible for her own mother's death.

Vowing revenge, she later instructed a loyal admirer to help her deal with Ayu. That night, Long Yan visited Ayu and lay beside her as she slept. When she stirred and wondered aloud if his presence was a dream, he gently reassured her it was real, pleased that she still recognized him. Back at Luofeng Pavilion, Xue Qianxun pondered Long Yan's implications about his feelings for Qing Qing. Confused by human affection, he sought the Immortal of Fate for guidance.

The Immortal of Fate explained that love involved pursuing the person, and if the pursuit brought happiness greater than being an immortal, it was genuine. Xue Qianxun concluded that "pursuing" meant giving gifts and decided to find a suitable present for Qing Qing. Xue Qianxun presented Qing Qing with a sachet, claiming he had simply bought it "by the way." However, Qing Qing had recently overheard a street vendor advertising sachets to "ward off evil spirits," specifically naming "bird demons."

As a bird demon herself, she mistakenly believed the gift was a deliberate mockery of her lower status. Resentfully, she accepted the "rare" gift and proposed a drinking contest. She challenged him to see who could get drunk first, secretly drinking osmanthus water while encouraging him to consume strong wine. Eventually, Xue Qianxun passed out on the table. Seizing her chance for revenge, Qing Qing drew a bird on Xue Qianxun's face.

When he woke up, he cheerfully suggested they go watch the dragon boat race. Panicked that he would be ridiculed and then blame her, Qing Qing tried to stall him by suggesting he wear a hat. Instead, Xue Qianxun conjured a mirror, revealing the Bird King symbol she had drawn. Seeing his own reflection, Qing Qing profusely apologized. Unperturbed, Xue Qianxun calmly cleaned his face and then declared it was his turn to "draw" on her. Resigning herself to a prank, Qing Qing reluctantly sat down, wondering what kind of outrageous drawing he would inflict upon her.
