Joy of Life Season 2 Episode 5 Recap
> Joy of Life Season 2 Recap
Fan Xian knew Li Chengze would not let things go easily and was worried he might stir up more trouble at Baoyue Brothel, so he asked Fan Sizhe to close it down. Li Chengqian urged Fan Xian to return to the diplomatic mission as soon as possible and not delay the journey to the capital.
Fan Xian asked Li Chengqian to send people to protect Teng Zijing’s wife and children, planning to settle scores with Li Chengze after returning to the capital. Li Chengqian promised to do his best. Before leaving, Fan Xian repeatedly warned Fan Sizhe to stay home and not go out. Li Chengping groggily woke up and called Fan Sizhe, who had been dozing off at the table. He vaguely remembered being knocked out.
Fan Sizhe tried hard to make up excuses and finally managed to persuade Li Chengping to leave. Fan Xian accompanied Wang Qinian to his home to find his wife and daughter, only to learn that they had been protected by Chen Pingping. Chen Pingping had even asked Lady Wang to inform Fan Xian that Teng Zijing’s wife and children would be sent to Danzhou. The diplomatic mission hurried toward the capital. Gao Da held tightly onto Fan Xian’s ashes.
As they drew nearer to the capital, Fan Xian still had not rejoined them, leaving Gao Da extremely anxious. He murmured to the ashes, while Xie Bian followed the mission closely with his men. Seeing no sign of Fan Xian and Gao Da mourning with the ashes, Xie Bian became convinced Fan Xian was truly dead. He quickly rushed back to the capital to report to Li Chengze.
Following Fan Xian’s orders, Fan Sizhe hid at home, not stepping a foot outside. Liu Ruyu grew curious and asked about it, but Fan Sizhe dared not tell the truth and made up excuses. Wang Qinian and Fan Xian chased after the diplomatic mission by carriage and unexpectedly encountered Xie Bian head-on. Xie Bian was shocked to see Fan Xian alive and immediately attempted to assassinate him.
Fan Xian’s old wound reopened; not wanting to fight, he used a cliff to escape Xie Bian and sent him with a message to Li Chengze: he would settle things with him once back in the capital. Wang Qinian and Fan Xian soon caught up with the mission. Gao Da was relieved to see them safe.
Fan Xian suddenly noticed the Grand Princess of Northern Qi leading a team following behind and realized that the young emperor Zhan Doudou had made a sudden decision to arrange a political marriage between the Grand Princess and the Southern Qing crown prince. Meanwhile, the crown prince was completing a brief handover with the border troops and had also been ordered to return to the capital.
Fan Wujiu calculated the time and realized that the crown prince and Fan Xian would enter the capital on the same day. Li Chengze came up with a sinister plan: he sent people to block and repair the road so that Fan Xian and the crown prince would enter through the same city gate, hoping to stir up conflict between them. Upon returning to the mission, Fan Xian immediately went to see Yan Bingyun.
Yan warned him not to rejoice too early—wherever the mission went, people came to buy Fan Xian’s belongings to mourn him. Fan Xian needed to provide a convincing reason for still being alive to calm public sentiment; otherwise, it could provoke outrage. Only then did Fan Xian realize the gravity of the situation. The one who spread news of his death was truly malicious, yet he had no way to counter it. Suddenly, Fan Xian had a clever idea.
He decided to use the Grand Princess of Northern Qi to make his fake death seem reasonable. He easily coaxed the real intention out of her: Zhan Doudou had made her Fan Xian’s intelligence liaison. With his eloquence, Fan Xian successfully persuaded the Grand Princess to put on a show.
The Grand Princess of Northern Qi publicly announced that Fan Xian had engaged in a deadly battle with a Grand Master to protect the diplomatic mission and the books left by Zhuang Mohan. He had to fake his death to survive. She insisted she had witnessed it with her own eyes, and Gao Da backed her up. Fan Xian and Wang Qinian covered themselves in dust and dirt to complete the deception.
The officials in the mission fully believed Fan Xian. Yan Bingyun ordered them to send news of Fan Xian’s “resurrection” to the capital via carrier pigeon and let the mission rest briefly before continuing. Fan Xian and his group hastened on and soon reached outside the northern gate of the capital. Assistant Minister Xin Qiwu of the Court of Diplomatic Reception ran out to meet them.
Fan Xian was relieved to learn that Qing Di hadn’t punished him and had even sent people to welcome them. Xin Qiwu revealed that the crown prince was also arriving that day and would soon arrive with his cavalry, urging Fan Xian to give way. Fan Xian refused and used the Grand Princess of Northern Qi to make his case.
