Although Ming Qingda was the nominal head of the Ming family, real power lay with his mother, the Old Madam. He followed her every command and would be punished with needle pricks at the slightest mistake. Enduring the intense pain, Ming Qingda vowed to root out the traitor colluding with Li Chengze. He was unwilling to hand over the workshops he had built over many years.

Instead, he wanted to provoke a fight between Fan Xian and Li Chengze, allowing the Ming family to benefit as the fisherman profiting from a fight between the snipe and clam. The Old Madam was very satisfied and allowed him to remove the needles from his fingers. Li Chengze saw Ming Qingda’s bloodstained fingers and guessed that Ming Qingda didn’t truly hold power.

Ming Qingda agreed to cooperate with Li Chengze to deal with Fan Xian but said he must find someone among his own brothers to take the blame—otherwise, Fan Xian wouldn’t believe the bounty had been issued by mistake. Li Chengze left this task to Ming Qingda, concerned that Qing Di would find out he had secretly come to Jiangnan. He left Xie Bian behind to help assassinate Fan Xian while he rushed back to the capital.

Before leaving, Li Chengze offered to kill the Old Madam for Ming Qingda so that he could become the real head of the family, but Ming Qingda couldn’t bring himself to do it. Dozens of elderly refugees took small boats to attack Fan Xian’s official ship. Fan Xian not only bore no grudge but invited them aboard for a hearty meal.

He learned that the Ming family had issued a bounty: if the refugees attacked the ship, their families would receive food. Desperate, the refugees risked their lives. Ming family agents monitored the elders from across the river, knowing full well they would not return. The elders had no choice but to proceed. Fan Xian once again experienced the Ming family’s cruelty and vowed to destroy them. He promised to return the refugees to their hometowns, earning their deep gratitude.

Fan Xian’s ship neared Suzhou. The Suzhou prefect, having heard that Fan Xian received many gifts along the way, came to the dock with his entire staff to welcome him—with lavish gifts in hand. Ming Qingda also came to greet him. Officials from all counties in Jiangnan, being fans of Fan Xian, flocked to catch a glimpse of the famed “Poetry Immortal. ”The official ship slowly docked.

Fan Xian disembarked with Li Chengping and others, having all gifts recorded as evidence. The Suzhou officials were so frightened that they hid the gifts behind their backs. Fan Xian showed them the 130,000 taels of silver he had brought from the capital. With these funds and the gifted treasures, he would send the northern refugees home. He didn’t trust the officials and assigned the task to local clerks. Xu, a clerk from Fuchuan County, volunteered.

Fan Xian dined with Li Chengping and Shi Chanli at a restaurant. Curious, Shi Chanli asked why Fan Xian entrusted disaster relief to clerks. Fan Xian said he wanted to give them a chance to prove themselves, trusting they would do their jobs well. Wang Qinian had arrived early and ordered the meal. The restaurant was in the city center and overlooked the water.

From the second floor, Fan Xian spotted a fisherman by the river and instantly recognized him as a ninth-rank master. The man looked back—Fan Xian identified him as Yun Zhilán, the top disciple of Si Gujian. If not for his lost inner force, Fan Xian would have liked to challenge him. Wang Qinian urged him to flee or face certain death. As Yun Zhilán was about to leave, Haitang Duoduo pinned his fishing rod down with a flower basket.

Yun Zhilán retaliated, flipping the basket over. Both possessed immense inner strength, sending huge waves over the water, almost capsizing nearby boats. Yun Zhilán wanted to kill Fan Xian, but Haitang Duoduo refused to let him. Just then, Shadow leapt from the water and engaged Yun Zhilán in fierce combat. The two quickly vanished from sight. Haitang Duoduo then went upstairs to dine with Fan Xian and the others.

Li Chengping and Shi Chanli noticed that Fan Xian and Haitang Duoduo seemed unusually close and assumed he had invited her. But Fan Xian knew nothing of it. Haitang Duoduo had received a letter from Fan Xian and came personally to deliver the “Heavenly Dao” cultivation manual. Fan Xian hoped to use the manual to restore his inner force. Unexpectedly, Ku He had entrusted him with a secret, forbidden technique. Fan Xian agreed to teach Haitang Duoduo the Domineering Qi in return.
