Hua Zhi inquired about the location of the Hall of Caution and made a kite with the words “The south wind understands my heart, blowing dreams to Xizhou” written on it. She flew it outside the palace walls of the Hall of Caution. When Gu Yanxi saw that Hua Zhi was expressing her feelings through the kite, the cold palace finally gained a touch of warmth.

When the Immortal Envoy learned that all the men in Hua Zhi’s family were in Sanbaicheng in the northern territory, her attitude softened slightly and she asked if Hua Zhi hated Emperor Qing. Hua Zhi replied that even if she did, what would it change? There were so many mouths in her family—old, young, women, and children—all relying on her to survive.

Even though she earned so much money and couldn’t fulfill her wishes, that money ultimately helped the common people, so it wasn’t in vain. Upon hearing this, the Immortal Envoy remarked that she was a bit envious of Hua Zhi. Chen Qing discovered that most of the items the Immortal Envoy purchased were ritual implements and medicinal herbs, but one item—a red powder—was unrecognized by Physician Zhang.

It was non-toxic, so Gu Yanxi asked him to bring it to Shao Yao. Shao Yao didn’t recognize it either, but when told that if she identified the red powder, Sister Hua and Brother could return, she became excited and rushed back to the Prince’s residence to investigate. Hua Zhi was copying the star observation records and corrected a mistake in the Immortal Envoy’s notes, which slightly surprised her.

Shao Yao and Shen Huan studied medical books together late into the night. Though drowsy, she refused to rest. The Immortal Envoy saw Hua Zhi at the observatory. Hua Zhi was deeply familiar with the star charts, which made the Immortal Envoy look at her with new respect. They chatted about the Immortal Envoy’s homeland and its icy sea. Upon hearing “icy sea,” Hua Zhi guessed she came from the northern lands.

The Immortal Envoy warned Hua Zhi to watch her words and stay out of things that didn’t concern her. Because moonlight appeared in the night sky, it rained the next day, just as expected. Gu Chengtao was pleased. The Immortal Envoy told him that at the Emperor’s Longevity Festival five days later, she would pray for rain again with a fireworks display in celebration of His Majesty’s long life. The Immortal Envoy personally took part in making the fireworks.

Hua Zhi detected the scent of sulfur and passed the information to Gu Yanxi. On the morning of the Longevity Festival, Shao Yao finally discovered what the red powder was and rushed to the pharmacy to buy all the realgar in stock. The Immortal Envoy’s maid followed Shao Yao and saw her enter the Prince of Ling’s residence. Fearing their plan might be exposed, she plotted to eliminate Shao Yao through an “accident.

”The Prince of Ling’s residence was set on fire again. Shao Yao was trapped inside. Just when she was most desperate and helpless, Shen Huan rushed in and shielded her as they tried to escape. Unexpectedly, a beam fell due to the intense fire. Shen Huan pushed Shao Yao out of the way but was struck on the leg himself. Shao Yao recalled the great fire from her childhood, when her mother had protected her in the same way.

She soaked a cloth, draped it over herself, and supported Shen Huan as they escaped the burning room. Chen Qing arrived just as they burst out of the sea of flames. Shao Yao told Shen Huan that her affection for him now outweighed her fear—she liked him very, very much. Chen Qing brought Shao Yao and Shen Huan to the Hua residence. Shao Yao explained the red powder’s purpose.

The matter was urgent, but Chen Qing and the others held too low a rank to gain an audience with Emperor Qing or the Empress Dowager, and Gu Yanxi was still imprisoned. So the Sixth Prince offered to go see the Empress Dowager himself. At the Longevity Banquet, music and dancing filled the hall. Prince Hui, Gu Yanrui, offered a toast to Emperor Qing, who drank it all in one go.

The Sixth Prince and Shao Yao successfully met with the Empress Dowager and revealed the Immortal Envoy’s plot to her. At the appointed auspicious time, under the gaze of the crowd, the Immortal Envoy lit the firework tube. In an instant, fireworks exploded and lit up the sky. The Immortal Envoy looked toward Emperor Qing, while Gu Chengtao wore an expression of full control.

The Empress Dowager issued a decree to Chen Qing and immediately ordered a return to the palace. Gu Chengtao publicly exposed the Immortal Envoy’s scheme, stating that even if the Seven Constellations Bureau hadn’t replaced her fire thistle, he would never have allowed her to light it in public.
