Ten years ago, on a stormy night, an injured man and a young boy fled through the woods, pursued by assassins. The man entrusted the boy with a keepsake to deliver to his daughter, Gu Haitang, before facing the pursuers alone. During his escape, the boy fell into a river. Ten years later, Gu Haitang arrived at Kunyang Railway Station to meet her long-separated mother and younger brother, who were traveling to find her missing father.
As they left the station, a passing car splashed mud on them. The arrogant young man in the car, Lang Yuexuan, simply offered a flippant apology before speeding away. A thief then stole Haitang's wooden box. Haitang asked her brother to escort their mother home while she pursued the thief through Kunyang. The chase led them into the "Lang Li Chun" shop, where the thief knocked over a display of rouge and powder.
Haitang threw a box of "Fairy Maiden Powder" at the thief, but it missed and hit Lang Yuexuan, the young master of the shop, who had just entered. The thief escaped. Yuexuan demanded compensation for the damaged goods. Haitang recognized him as the driver from the railway station and challenged the inflated prices, exposing flaws in the cosmetics. She refused to pay and left the shop. Later, Haitang arrived at a job interview to discover that Yuexuan was the interviewer.
To retaliate, Yuexuan announced that all candidates except Haitang were hired. Haitang started to leave but Yuexuan stopped her, using the debt as leverage to continue the interview. He asked personal questions about her marital status. Helpless, Haitang agreed to fulfill three requests in exchange for the cancellation of her debt and the return of her box.
Meanwhile, Long Mohua, the daughter of the military governor, was displeased with her gown for the upcoming Kunyang debutante ball, hoping to outshine everyone and attract Lang Yuexuan. However, Yuexuan's interest had already been piqued by Haitang. The military governor, Long Sinian, punished the tailor by making him wear the dress in public. Long Mohua wanted to attend the ball because of Lang Yuexuan.
The next day, Haitang assisted with makeup in the backstage area of the debutante ball, also retrieving her box from Lang Yuexuan. In the chaotic backstage, a debutante's necklace broke, and Long Mohua's hair became entangled with another girl. Haitang skillfully resolved both situations before the ball began, fixing Long Mohua's hair.
During the ball, attended by Kunyang's elite, the atmosphere was tense due to the rivalry between Lang Sinian, the owner of "Lang Li Chun," and Shi Jizhou, the owner of "Shi Hang Lu." Suddenly, assassins appeared and attacked Lang Sinian and Shi Jizhou. Haitang pulled down a rug, tripping an assassin and saving Lang Sinian. She also protected Long Mohua from gunfire before the military governor's soldiers took control.
The military governor, who had secretly planned to eliminate Lang Sinian and Shi Jizhou, was angered by the thwarted attempt. He convened a meeting of the city's merchants to investigate the incident. Shi Jizhou, who had also planned the assassination of Lang Sinian, was equally frustrated.
