Lang Yueming became deeply smitten with Gu Haitang after their initial meeting and expressed his desire to marry her to his mother, Feng Chunyan. Feng Chunyan then consulted with Lang Sinian regarding the marriage. Lang Yueming had long been a source of concern for Lang Sinian due to a childhood fire that disfigured his face, causing him to become reclusive. Lang Sinian had publicly claimed Lang Yueming was gravely ill and unfit to be seen.
However, seeing Lang Yueming develop true feelings for Gu Haitang, Lang Sinian was delighted. Feng Chunyan, however, harbored resentment, feeling that Lang Sinian favored his adopted son, Lang Yuexuan, over his biological son, Lang Yueming, whose disfigurement she believed caused Lang Sinian to lose face. Although Lang Sinian acknowledged the deep bond between Lang Yuexuan and Lang Yueming, which surpassed brotherhood, Feng Chunyan persisted in her accusations of favoritism.
Exasperated, Lang Sinian threatened to send her away, but Feng Chunyan, suppressing her anger, continued discussing Lang Yueming's marriage. She expressed heartbreak over Lang Yueming's isolation and saw Gu Haitang as his hope for change. Concerned that Gu Haitang might refuse to marry the disfigured Lang Yueming, Feng Chunyan proposed a deceptive plan: Lang Yuexuan would pretend to propose to and marry Gu Haitang. Once the marriage was irreversible, Gu Haitang would then be revealed as Lang Yueming's wife.
The entire family was instructed to keep this deception a secret. Feng Chunyan approached Lang Yuexuan, asking him to carry out the fake wedding. Lang Yuexuan vehemently disagreed, believing it would be incredibly unfair to Gu Haitang, and suggested Lang Yueming should honestly express his feelings to her. However, Feng Chunyan used emotional blackmail, threatening suicide and appealing to his sense of familial obligation, forcing Lang Yuexuan to reluctantly agree.
Witnessing Lang Yueming's profound joy and deep affection for Gu Haitang, Lang Yuexuan suppressed his own sadness and helped his brother with the proposal. Lang Yueming wished to give Gu Haitang the best, and Lang Yuexuan suggested creating a Haitang flower garden for her. The two brothers then worked together to cultivate the garden. On the wedding day, a heartbroken Lang Yuexuan drank heavily and passed out.
Meanwhile, Miao Lan secretly noted Gu Haitang as yet another unfortunate bride in the Lang family. Gu Haitang, seeing the wedding dress her mother had meticulously prepared, couldn't bear to cause her sadness, so she entered the sedan chair, unaware of the deception, and was married into the Lang family, mistakenly becoming Lang Yueming's wife. The next morning, Long Mohua learned that Gu Haitang had entered the sedan chair the previous night, mistakenly believing Gu Haitang had married Lang Yuexuan.
Enraged, she insisted her father, Marshal Long Deshui, accompany her to the Lang family to demand an explanation, accusing both Gu Haitang and the Lang family of deceit. Meanwhile, Gu Haitang awoke in an unfamiliar room, confused and with a high fever. Lang Yueming attempted to touch her face, then realized she was feverish and rushed out to urgently call a doctor, but also, overcome with shame, fled without looking back.
Long Mohua, on her way to confront Gu Haitang, encountered Lang Yueming running out and noticed large red wedding decorations in the attic, which further heightened her suspicions. At the Lang family residence, Marshal Long Deshui confronted Lang Sinian, who was initially confused by the accusations. Feng Chunyan then arrived and explained the entire truth: Lang Yueming's disfigurement, the planned fake wedding, and how Gu Haitang had unknowingly married Lang Yueming.
Long Mohua, who had been listening from outside the window, clearly understood the deception and was relieved to learn that it was not Lang Yuexuan who had married Gu Haitang. Marshal Long Deshui repeatedly apologized to Lang Sinian and Feng Chunyan for the misunderstanding. News of Gu Haitang's fever reached Feng Chunyan.
She immediately went to the attic, personally fed Gu Haitang medicine, and tried to persuade her to accept her fate and enjoy a life of wealth within the Lang family. Gu Haitang, wanting only to return home, angrily knocked over the medicine bowl. Enraged, Feng Chunyan locked Gu Haitang in the attic, assigning guards to watch her 24 hours a day until she reconsidered.
Later, Lang Yueming, sitting alone in a pavilion, expressed regret over marrying Gu Haitang after witnessing her suffering. Feng Chunyan found him and advised him that feelings could be cultivated, urging him to treat Gu Haitang well to win her affection. Fully aware of the truth, Long Mohua went to the attic to confront Gu Haitang. She threatened the maid guarding the door to gain entry. Once inside, Long Mohua immediately scolded Gu Haitang, accusing her of deceiving her.
Gu Haitang, weeping sadly, admitted that she loved Lang Yuexuan and had intended to yield Lang Yueming to Long Mohua. However, seeing her mother's meticulously prepared wedding dress, she couldn't bear to disappoint her, which led her to enter the sedan chair and mistakenly marry Lang Yueming.
As Gu Haitang grew sadder, Long Mohua began to cry with her, lamenting that all this happened because the Lang family had deceived everyone—Gu Haitang, herself, and everyone else—and expressed her relief that she wasn't the one who had gotten into the sedan chair, or she would be the one crying on the bed.
