Li Bing took Chen Shi to visit Xu Hu's adoptive father, Old Yang. He then recounted the battle three years ago to Chen Shi: the Zixu Kingdom from the Western Regions invaded, and the imperial court pacified them in just three months. Wang Qi suddenly reported that another murder had occurred at the city gate. Li Bing rushed to the scene and found that the deceased was Wu Liu, a fugitive just released by the Jinwu Guard.
The cause of death was the same as Zhao Ruyi's. Several villagers from the charitable burial ground carried the body away. Chen Shi suddenly remembered that Old Yang from the charitable burial ground had said he personally prepared Xu Hu's body. Therefore, Old Yang likely tampered with it. Li Bing decided to re-examine Xu Hu's body. Sun Bao had a premonition that Xu Hu was not dead.
At night, he tricked the jailer into giving him the key and went to the room where Xu Hu's body was kept to check. Several checkpoints were set up at the door, all of which Sun Bao evaded. Opening the coffin, the body inside was indeed not Xu Hu's. Immediately after, Xu Hu stood behind Sun Bao. After confirming there was no one else, the two sat down and talked about the past.
Xu Hu recalled that after saving Sun Bao on the battlefield three years ago, he returned to Huangsha Valley alone to check for survivors. He unexpectedly discovered that the deceased were not from the Western Regions, but were from the Shendu army. There were signs of bodies being searched at the scene. A carriage nearby contained a pried-open stone coffin, which was empty, clearly already searched by Lu Chenghuang.
Xu Hu guessed that someone must have been secretly transporting something and encountered his army along the way. Both sides suffered heavy casualties, and finally, Lu Chenghuang picked up the transported items. When Lu Chenghuang returned to Shendu, he suddenly seemed to have a protective umbrella. Xu Hu became more convinced that the treasure Lu Chenghuang found in Huangsha Valley could constrain the power controlling things from behind. So, he faked his death to hide his identity and investigate secretly.
Unfortunately, he was never able to find the location where Lu Chenghuang hid the items. While the two were talking, a group of black-clothed masked men kidnapped Old Yang. After killing him in front of them, they retreated. Immediately after, Li Bing arrived with Mingjing Hall and the Ministry of Justice simultaneously. Xu Hu handed Sun Bao a pouch and continued to hide. Li Bing only saw Sun Bao and the assassinated Old Yang.
Sun Bao had escaped from prison and was now implicated in a murder case, so he was quickly taken away by the Ministry of Justice. Regarding Xu Hu's whereabouts, Sun Bao remained silent. The Ministry of Justice had no solution. Lai Zhongshu found Feng Jian and expressed Qiu Qingzhi's intention: Li Bing would definitely find clues to save Sun Bao as soon as possible.
This would cause a complete falling out between the Ministry of Justice and Court of Judicial Review. At that point, it would be better to hand over the case to the Jinwu Guard. Li Bing guessed that Xu Hu was likely hiding in Zhao Ruyi's wife's dye shop. Leading Mingjing Hall, he indeed found Xu Hu. Li Bing quickly found Feng Jian and exposed him as Lu Chenghuang's backer. Therefore, he paid special attention to Xu Hu's appearance, sent people to kill Zhao Ruyi and Wu Liu to frame Xu Hu, guessed that Sun Bao could find Xu Hu, and arranged subsequent matters. Feng Jian tried to argue, but Li Bing had Qiu Qingzhi disguise himself as Xu Hu and appear before Feng Jian. Feng Jian was completely flustered.
Only after seeing Qiu Qingzhi's face did he realize it was too late. It turned out that Li Bing had gotten the beeswax pouch Sun Bao secretly slipped to him and had found Qiu Qingzhi in advance to help him stage a play. Immediately after, a cold arrow shot from the ceiling beam hit Lu Chenghuang, killing him. Sun Bao handed the box to Li Bing and Qiu Qingzhi. Inside were records of the spoils split between Feng Jian and Lu Chenghuang. After finishing these tasks, Xu Hu took Old Yang's body back to his roots for burial. Sun Bao told Li Bing that the two of them had not fought with Lu Chenghuang, so Lu Chenghuang being hit meant there was someone else in the room.
