Zi Kong woke up from unconsciousness and found himself in an unfamiliar courtyard. A woman approached, concerned about his condition. She had tidied up his clothes and returned them to him, explaining that he had been rescued by the man in her household. Zi Kong anxiously searched for his small pouch; noticing this, the woman quickly handed it to him. Only after confirming that the blood-stained handkerchief was still inside did Zi Kong feel at ease.

Zi Kong left alone without a word and stood outside staring intently at the blood-stained handkerchief, murmuring Man Ying’s name. It seemed he had made a firm resolution to find his younger brother. Chi Lian left a farewell letter for Jiu Xuanye. Duan Banxia felt a bit reluctant to see him go, believing that Chi Lian wasn't a bad person. Jiu Xuanye then explained to Duan Banxia about the incident involving Chi Lian and Xingxian.

It was Xingxian who was closer to Duan Banxia. Jiu Xuanye believed that if a demon now had a reason to kill someone, they would do it again—because in their eyes, human lives held little value. That’s why he had to restrain Chi Lian. Duan Banxia complained that Jiu Xuanye was even more nagging than her father, stuffing a snack into his mouth to shut him up.

Xingxian returned to Fa'en Temple to offer prayers, thanking the Bodhisattva for giving her a new life—something she would never forget. Chi Lian also went to Ting Yuxuan to bid farewell to the owner, who gave him some travel money, hoping more people could hear his music. Just then, Chi Lian suddenly heard Xingxian praying to the Bodhisattva, wishing for Chi Lian to die. This time, she didn’t want divine intervention—she wanted to kill him with her own hands.

Chi Lian felt a pang of sorrow. When Chi Lian saw Xingxian, however, he acted as if nothing had happened. Xingxian had brought some wine from the foot of the mountain—Chi Lian’s favorite. He knew something was wrong with the wine but didn’t expose her. Instead, he asked where she had learned to play the qin.

Xingxian recounted her tragic past: she had learned to play from her mother, but her mother believed her brother was the family’s lucky star and banned her from touching the instrument. Xingxian had always wanted to play the music she loved and do what she truly desired. Chi Lian comforted her, saying that she would surely get to live as her true self one day. Chi Lian didn’t drink the wine.

Instead, he played and sang a piece for Xingxian, telling her it was a tune he composed himself, written for a person from his past. No matter what he had gone through, it was all just to see that person again. Suddenly, Chi Lian asked Xingxian if she was happy to have met him. Xingxian gave a small nod, tears glimmering in her eyes. Chi Lian then unexpectedly picked up the wine and drank it in one gulp.

Ting Zhou urged Duan Banxia to clarify things with Duan Yingheng about breaking off the engagement and to admit her feelings for Jiu Xuanye. Considering that Jiu Xuanye had saved them, Duan Yingheng likely wouldn’t punish him too harshly. Just then, Li Xian suddenly arrived at the Duan household, kneeling to ask for the engagement to be annulled. He explained that he wanted to focus on pursuing scholarly honors.

Duan Yingheng understood Li Xian’s ambitions but worried about how his father would take it. Li Xian had already planned everything, taking all the blame on himself and claiming it was due to his own inability to marry, so as not to damage Duan Banxia’s reputation. Duan Yingheng had no choice but to agree. Duan Banxia was very grateful for Li Xian’s actions. Li Xian, in turn, asked her to help him become Jiu Xuanye’s apprentice.

He even called Duan Banxia “shiniang” (Master's wife) in front of Jiu Xuanye, sincerely begging to be accepted as a disciple. Jiu Xuanye tried to decline, saying Li Xian held an official position and wasn’t suited to be a disciple. But Li Xian declared he would resign immediately and that his earlier conversation with Duan Yingheng had just been an excuse to break off the engagement. Seeing Jiu Xuanye’s reluctance, Duan Banxia spoke on Li Xian’s behalf.

Jiu Xuanye finally accepted by drinking the ceremonial tea. Duan Banxia hadn’t expected Jiu Xuanye to really take Li Xian as a disciple, but Jiu Xuanye revealed his true feelings: he couldn’t actually let his "shiniang" marry someone else. Hearing Jiu Xuanye admit to their relationship made Duan Banxia smile. Li Xian then took his leave, and Duan Banxia guessed his father wouldn't let him resign easily, so he probably wouldn’t return anytime soon.

At that moment, Jiu Xuanye and Duan Banxia ran into Xingxian and asked about Chi Lian’s whereabouts. Xingxian lied, saying she and Zhang Pu had been deeply in love, but when drunk, he would sometimes behave inappropriately. Later, Chi Lian became infatuated with her and killed Zhang Pu.

She claimed Chi Lian often threatened her to play music for him and that the daily oppression was unbearable, so she gave him realgar wine and stabbed him in the vital spot with a dagger, killing him. His body, she said, was now in a box in the courtyard. Xingxian planned to leave and live her own life elsewhere. Jiu Xuanye and Duan Banxia checked the box but found it empty—Chi Lian had already left.

Jiu Xuanye regretted that he’d never hear Chi Lian’s music again. He had always suspected Xingxian owed a debt to Chi Lian, which is why he committed murder for her. But he also saw that Xingxian didn’t want to be with him, so Chi Lian chose to leave and let her continue to live as Mr. Bai without worries. Duan Banxia felt it was a pity—such a good person had been let down.

But Jiu Xuanye believed that even though Chi Lian had killed someone, it was already fortunate he had survived. He also hoped Chi Lian would meet someone who genuinely cared for him. Meanwhile, Chi Lian was riding a donkey away when a butterfly flew over to him. He gave a bitter smile—he was still alive, but gravely injured. Most of his powers were gone; he could no longer protect the butterfly.

He hoped the butterfly would go live the life it wanted. But the butterfly still chose to stay by his side. Sima Lingying was sneaking some marinated duck in her room when she heard footsteps and quickly lay down, pretending to be unconscious. But Chu Youhuang saw through her act. Sima Lingying complained that he had only been feeding her thin porridge lately, which was why she had stolen food.

Chu Youhuang, annoyed, tried to drive her away, claiming he already had someone he liked—Duan Banxia. He said he and Duan Banxia had deep affection for each other in a painting. Before he could finish, Wen Jian rushed in and told Chu Youhuang that Jiu Xuanye was getting married to Duan Banxia. Sima Lingying grinned smugly. Duan Banxia stormed up to Jiu Xuanye, furious that he had set a wedding date without discussing it with her.

Jiu Xuanye explained that he had asked Duan Yingheng for permission, but didn’t expect him to act so quickly and make the engagement public. Seeing how angry Duan Banxia was, Jiu Xuanye promised that once they were married, he would risk his life to protect her. That night, Duan Banxia made a delicious meal and passed it to Jiu Xuanye over the wall. Jiu Xuanye asked her what she wanted to eat the next day. Duan Banxia requested sweet soup. Just then, they heard Duan Yingheng calling for her, and she hurried downstairs in fright.
